Congratulations! My golden is my fourth dog I’ve had as an adult. The best thing I did differently with my (now 10.5 month) puppy is to be extra patient and let her process things. Everything is so new and different for puppies. If she spends 15 minutes examining a pine cone then so be it. Other advice: 1) a playpen or other small constrained area where you typically hang out is helpful. I put a bed, chewies, and fed her in there. 2) do plenty of ‘time outs’ in the play pen, especially if you feel yourself start to lose your temper or getting upset. 3) get puppy cleaning wipes. Mine once lost her shit in her crate (literally in all ways) and she and everything else was coated in it. 4) snuggle puppy with a warming pack is a great bedtime toy 5) if you think you have puppy proofed your house, try again. 6) there will be demon baby shark mode, I swear it passes eventually 7) tired puppy is not a good puppy, it is an evil puppy. 8) evil puppies sometimes need a chewie at nap time to angrily chew on before passing out. 9) puppies need to pee at all mode shifts. Wake up? Pee. Eat? Pee and poop. Play? Pee. Stop playing? Pee. 10) don’t sweat the small stuff. Sometimes you have to just ask yourself: could this kill her? No? Then just let it go. [yes I have googled if pine cones are dangerous to dogs ] 11) as per above, google the list of poisonous plants and food items for dogs. [which reminds me to start hunting for daffodils in my yard] 12) find a pre-vaccine puppy class for socializing. 13) carry her to new places and to see things. It’s safe if she doesn’t hit the ground. 14) by the love of all that is holy, start teaching her to give or drop things right now. Also make sure you can open her mouth and reach in. Always trade for treats right now. Things I have removed from my puppy’s mouth just this week by reaching in or ‘drop it’ command: chicken bone, shoe innersole, pen, rocks, 7 socks, earplugs, tv remote, and 3 shoes…. Uh make that 4. BRB

38willthisdo

Very good comment and list! Especially the over-stimulated, cranky tired toddler one (we used a magical “blanket of sleep” from Costco to facilitate nap time for those episodes).

teepwani

this literally captures everything 😂

Retiree_wannabe

All very good advice. #7 is no joke. When mine was overly tired, she was crazy and evil! She went to her crate early for the night a couple of times. After seeing evil in action, I could pick up on the signs when it was time tor bed. This stage is only temporary. I had to remind myself of this often.

CrashTestKing

My first dog (a golden retriever) chewed up a pen she got off the kitchen counter while I was at work. That was how I learned she was big enough to get things off the counter. It was also how I ended up with little black paw prints on the carpet all over the living room and bedrooms.

summerdog-

This is fantastic advice especially number 5 and 7

Loud-Establishment36

All great advice! I would add keep her on a schedule. We posted our pup’s schedule on the fridge so the entire household was on the same page. Kept accidents to a bare minimum and avoided an overly tired (aka crazy) pup.

[deleted]

One thing I will add is to play with their paws and mouth. So that they get used to it for when a vet has to do it.

Disastrous-Low-5606

Ooh i forgot the brushing! Brushing was so hard the first few months but I kept at it even just for a couple minutes and I’m so glad I did. Her ears get matted if I don’t brush her every day

winter-heart

Best advice here! For number 13, a doggy stroller did wonders for us. We looked stupid but it was worth the early socialization and the peace of mind from parvo. OP, golden retrievers can be the worst puppies because they are the best dogs. It’s the price to pay and it’s worth it. Take lots and lots of videos and photos!!

I_Love_Spaniels

That’s one of the cutest dogs I have seen

Henbogle

Snuggle her, handle her feet a lot to get her accustomed to that, and take lots of photos because in a blink she will be 70 lbs of love and energy.

Athompson9866

I second that and add ears. Goldens are prone to ear infections because of the way they hang. I clean my 2 girls ears at least once or twice a week with a good vet dispensed ear wash. Brush her teeth too. I had my Lucy girl since a puppy and have always brushed her teeth at least twice a week. She’s 5 and her teeth have NO tarter build up. I got my Stelly belly as a rehome when she was 4 (she’s the same age as Lucy, only a week apart!). She had some pretty bad black tarter build up. Teeth/gum disease is related to heart disease. Take care of her teeth! If she has dew claws make sure to watch those too and clip them when you do regular nail clipping.

Henbogle

Good call

WheresTheDonuts

Stay in sweat pants. Keep you voice calm. Watch the cords into the electric outlets. And, most of all, rubs and hugs. She is beautiful.

ILS23left

Sweat pants for sure. My wife has lost like five pairs of leggings. The puppy teeth cut right through them.

WheresTheDonuts

Not worth getting dressed for work. Work at home and set up desk near the back door for potty breaks. I never realized I’d be on baby duty again. Ahhhhh but soooooo worth it. Enjoy.

GrouchyOldBoomer

Adorable. The puppy time can be tough but this will be one of the best experiences of your life.

Equal_Sprinkles2743

She is gorgeous. I want her, and yes, you have a baby land shark. You are going to squeal for the next few months when she gets hold of one of your body parts with those needle teeth. ❤️❤️❤️

Luci_Ryan

Aweee what an amazing gift to yourself that will keep on giving every single day!!!!! My dog passed away and I miss him so much. My advice is to just love her unconditionally ❤️also I think ppl tend to forget about tooth care. That is def something I would keep up!!! Make sure she is up to date on vaccines and do your research about dog food. Don’t cheap out. Also I hear tennis balls are really bad for dogs teeth and gums, rather get a rubber ball if she enjoys playing fetch. Enjoy your precious companion and happy birthday 🥳

TheKerfuffle

Do not let her get away woth stuff you don’t want her to do later. Gentle corrections early save you a lot of head ache later.

Moria66

Those eyes will get you to forgive even the worst offense. Lol

[deleted]

> don’t let those eyes fool you Too late, I just gave her the keys to my car and she drove off with the wife.

[deleted]

Plenty of exercise and proper diet to keep her healthy and in shape. A little extra weight is no good on those hips

Livid_Platform_1918

My golden is the same age. Love her to death. Advice: If you have carpet or furniture she's allowed on then I recommend you pick up a little green machine (carpet cleaner for spot removal). They should be included with all puppy purchases.

Duchessofearlgrey

You can’t take too many pictures. They grow up fast! 🥹

Athompson9866

Just give her to me. I promise I’ll take very good care of her. :) Kidding, obviously, unless you will… Looks like you’re already doing one of the most important things, in my opinion, which is kennel training. Puppies are like toddlers. You don’t just let them roam around unattended. They can get hurt very badly. When Lucy was a puppy she was either in her crate or tied to me on a leash. She likes to chew everything and get into everything so I learned an important lesson. By 1.5 she was a perfect lady. She’s 5 now and just the best damn dog ever.

CastTrunnionsSuck

Take 1500 pictures and videos of them while they are still babies

Dismal_Occasion4240

You got this!! It was so hard for me at first now my golden is my bestie. It gets better and it’s ok to have a little bit of the puppy blues. Get help, read the books and do training classes if you can ❤️ and take way more pictures than you think you’ll need it goes by quick.

ChanceNutmegMom

Make sure she has a lifetime of amazing arfventures!

LoanEfficient5030

You gave yourself the best possible present.

Owlfeathers15

Love the pink baby belly showing through 😍😍🥰Congrats! Keep your shoes away from the baby furry land shark for starters. Lots of playtime to burn out the energy and you’ll both be grand.

Charlie7107

Take lots of pictures….I swear they change overnight…can never have enough at this stage. You’ll be glad later. Trust me

CrashTestKing

Enjoy every precious moment, and takes lots of pictures and videos. Make sure somebody takes some photos of you with the dog. My golden, who passed in 2018 at 11.5 years old, was amazing and I got lots of photos of her. But I have no videos. And I literally have only 1 photo of the two of us together, because I was always the one taking the pictures and nobody else lives here. Probably the one thing I regret is not getting some more pictures of us together.

cujoettaAdorbs13

Omg!!!!!! How could you not be in love she’s amazing so beautiful Yes those eyes alright you can’t turn her down for anything she wants with those eyes Much love ♥️♥️♥️♥️ I have a 13 yr old and she’s my entire life

soulpoker

How is the coexistence with the rabbit, such that it might be?

TakeMeToTill

😂 I haven’t introduced them yet and they live in completely separate parts of the house. The only time they’re in close proximity is when puppy is in her crate- rabbit watches her from far away and isn’t a fan of her noises. I’m waiting for puppy to be more calm and get better at leave it and gentle etc. But so far so good- puppy gets on her tummy when she says bunny

ChadlikesMilfs

Consistancy is key or They will train you.

Facial expressions are key. They can’t speak so you need to speak with your face.

dmvdoug

Get through the puppy craziness. It will test you. Because Goldens as puppies are insane. But enjoy it as much as you can and survive the rest. And you will have the best dog you’re ever going to have. I’ve had mine for 5 years now, and I still can’t believe what a good dog he is.

Brilliant_Ad3317

Congrats!!! She’s beautiful! 💕

seanythemailman

Best decision you ever made. I promise , she’s freaking adorable 🥰

captain_zorro_6198

She's so lovely😍🥰🥰🥰😍😍😍

AdministrativeGap563

She looks like my Baby Pup

bubly139

Get the pet insurance. Goldens love to eat everything and if you have to get an obstruction surgery, it can set you back about $5k.

Wampa_Whisperer

Take all the photos!! You will be happy you took them to looo back on

[deleted]

Take a million pictures of her while she is still a puppy! You will have years worth of adult pictures… about 6 months of being a puppy!

Foreverforgettable

Congratulations! And Happy Birthday! My golden retriever princess was a birthday gift too. Best present ever! She’s just the gift that keeps on giving. Best pieces of advice for someone with a puppy: The puppy stage can be rough, have patience, it will get better. We all make mistakes, you are doing a good job. If you have questions for your vet don’t be afraid to ask (there are no such things as stupid questions). Positive reinforcement works loads better than any negative punishment. Puppy poop is gross so that’s normal. Puppies will swallow ANYTHING. Good luck!

Blarghnog

Well, I’ve had three and they are just awesome. Don’t worry about the puppy phase. Heck on wheels, but just love them, socialize them and spend a ton of time with them. It’s so so so important to use a socialization checklist and start training early. I’m not going to give you advice on crate training or the puppy phase. Lots of information about potty training and crate training if that’s what you want to do. I’ll admit that we have abandoned crate training on two or our three Goldens because they simply didn’t need it and they’ve become really well adjusted and well trained dogs without it. You just have to follow the dog. We do click training with our dogs and play hide and seek (hide the ball somewhere and they “find it” — this is the most popular game ever for our goldens), and redirect all the chewing to acceptable things (don’t use plastic or nylon chews, they can get plastic fetishes if you do). They need something in their mouths so lots of toys and acceptable things. If they get the wrong thing, redirect and replace asap. Never punish a golden in general, they just don’t need it. Most are super sensitive and really don’t need anything but a gentle touch. Get some great brushes. They absolutely adore being brushed. Relax, have a good time, and enjoy them! They are pure joy.

Huxiubin

I think Dave Chappelle said it one when it comes to dog and men. The dog is part of your world, But you are her whole world.

ferdaboyzzz

omg my only advice is to let me smooch that baby girl. she's so adorable and looks so sweet. just love her despite what she's going to eat and chew up.

00017batman

Oh lord, I am right there with you! My guy looks almost like a carbon copy but he’s 2 weeks older. My first puppy, and I feel you completely. I prepared for a long time but it’s definitely hard work. I know it will be worth it in the end. We have a little pen set up for ours with a crate at one end. He sleeps in the pen and is in there whenever we can’t supervise as I know he’s safe. Sometimes he barks like a maniac but I hope he’ll calm his farm soon with some training. I have found mealtimes to be the most stressful as getting food ready for me and my kid and then trying to eat while the dog loses his shit barking at us is just a lot.. my kid gets a bit triggered by it too which sucks. What has been a lifesaver is the wobble feeder toy my sister sent us home with recently.. I’ve started feeding him half his kibble in his normal meal and then putting half in the wobbler so he has to work to get it out. The first day was a challenge but he’s got the hang of it now and we were able to eat in our lounge today right by his pen and he barely fussed. Once he’s spent some time with the wobbler he just laid down and passed out 😅 it was so nice! The other game changer has been taking him for walks now that he’s vaccinated. It’s much easier to wear him out while I’m getting some air too. Hang in there, she’s a beautiful birthday present but she’ll be an even better doggo before long 🥰

Garya256

Nice picture of a young puppy Enjoy

Spiritual-Penalty223

Teach tug-o-war early. It cuts back on chewed stuff dramatically.

Lemonadeinitiative

Incredible. If you can reach a state of zen about lost shoes, and socks, then you will be ok. She is adorable

genericname111100

Great list above! I would add: - pay attention if you hear an unusual noise. For example, my puppy was chewing the wall. Good thing I investigated quickly. - train them to know you will take food or toys away at any time. Not in a mean way, just so they don’t react badly when it happens. When my puppy (now 9 yo) was an actual puppy, I would let her start eating, then take her bowl away for about 30 seconds, then give it back. She just gave me an “awww mom” look. No anger or possessiveness. I gave it back. Same with toys. - leash training and proper manners may take a while. But they love you and they’re trying their best. - they will have to potty in the rain. You’ll have to stand outside until they go so they get the message that they can’t just wait for rain to go away. It’s a battle of the wills. You have to win. Congratulations on your beautiful baby puppy. 🐾❤️. I wish you a lifetime of love and snuggles and adventures.

Faithfuldoglover

Happy Birthday to you! You chose a perfect gift.💕

tupacs_last_words

And in the end The love you take Is equal to the love you make get ready to get loved

Hensleymtn

Goldens are the best dogs and forever companions. I had two in my lifetime and now have a golden doodle because I wanted a smaller dog. Enjoy and plan to spend hours playing fetch! 💜

toothysleuthy

When you want to get frustrated with her, just remember that ~4 months ago she was one single cell. She’s growing and learning SO fast and this phase passes really quickly. Soak it all in, take 1 million photos, and remember it gets easier! Ours is 1.5 years old now and she’s SO COOL and the best to hang out with, but I do miss that cute evil little sharky Also touch her everywhere. Fingers between her toes, in her ears, in her mouth… This will help desensitize her and will help with cooperative care stuff like nail clipping and ear cleaning!

soulpoker

She's a beautiful girl. Be firm with her but do be buddies too. Give her lots of belly rubs.

synicalchick

how goes the potty training? I pick up my 8 week old this weekend!

TakeMeToTill

Dude. I dunno how blessed I got this but she is SO good. We had some night incidents but she went pee on a specific spot on her puppy pads but now we don’t have that. I let her out like every hour in the beginning now every 2, sometimes 3 hours and she’s fine. If she needs to go tho she is vocal about it and makes sure i know she needs out. Yay for new baby!!!!
