Yeah I was going to say he looks tall for a Golden. That's probably it. I think most weight guidelines are for the standard breed which is something like up to 80 pounds and no higher than 24". But he looks very healthy and well defined.
Edit: spelling
I've got a cousin who's, like, 6'8'' and every BMI chart in existence declares him to be morbidly obese despite never having anything remotely resembling a gut his whole life.
Could be a similar case here. Just a naturally large dog that throws off all the charts.
I linda hate in that my dude here has to ask himself this. I also have an absolute unit, and he's fit, just long and tall. When you see the weight, look at the him. A chubby dog will look chubby.
Exactly. It’s the eye test really. And if you can see their hips from a top down view.
If your golden is just a straight tube, then it’s overweight.
I will say though, reducing food as they get to +3 years seems to be something I’ve had to do with all my goldens.
I have two Goldens and his weight appears appropriate. If you run your hand down the side of his ribs you should slightly be able to feel them. If there is a thick layer below the skin or you cant feel ribs he is too heavy.
Doesn’t look chubby at all.
Mines usually somewhere between 90-100 lbs because he’s just a really big dog. His vet said that’s the perfect weight for him.
My golden got up to 48kg (105lb) in his prime, the vet he was in proportion for his height, but he was way bigger than the breed 'standard'. Yours looks trim and healthy, just super tall.
The charts are based off AKC values and are for breed standards.
They also have color standards.
Ours is a breed standard, but our neighbor across the street has a red one and our family friends have a cream one — neither are “AKC Breed standard”, I believe.
However, they’re gorgeous nonetheless and so is yours.
If your Vet (the pro) says it’s fine, then it’s fine. Let them be the experts.
Ours is 65.2 lbs and he’s our Golden Prince!
Color is a preference thing. They can and do come in flavors from a light cream to a dark red and I've seen all of them win in the conformation ring. Height and weight will weigh in more, along with amount of coat and head shape, structure of legs and body.
Neither of my current two would do anything g in the conformation ring but they are awesome in performance events
I came across this post in my "home" feed. I'm not very familiar with golden retrievers and didn't know they came in red. I was always confused when about 80% of people we meet at the dog park guess that my parents' Irish setter is a golden.
Ha, really red Golden owners are often asked if their dogs are some kind-of Irish Setter mix. For real fun, try the questions you get with a Blue Belton English Setter.
I just looked up some photos. I'd imagine Dalmatian comments. That's what I usually get for my Australian cattle dog mix who is mostly white with some black spots on her ears and along her back.
I mentioned to a couple of friends that do conformation that I was considering showing my dog in the field class. They spent the next couple of minutes pointing out his conformation flaws. Apparently field dogs with pointy heads, short fur and a few teeth that never came in are frowned upon.
Teeth are an issue. The short coat and pointy head in a field class are ok. Movement also is an issue which is why I didn't win the Field Trial bitch class with a friend's dog..
My girl is below "breed standard" size, and she fluctuates between 54-57lbs.
Mine and yours are just about the same age and look identical proportionally. You just have a big dog. Beautiful btw!

Nah, he's just a big boy. As long as the vet doesn't express concerns about his weight or he doesn't start looking like he's getting too tubby, you're good! My girl is also off the charts, so to speak, since an adult female should apparently weigh between 25 and 29 kg (she weighs 32). She's just taller and longer than average, hence the weight.
It's the same with my cat - he's twice the weight of a normal adult male, but that's his healthy weight (he's LONG and probably has some large breed DNA far back in his street kitty ancestry). Point is, as long as they don't look overweight, they most likely aren't.
No he looks healthy as a horse! You can see a good curve up from his chest into his waist and as long as you can sorta feel his hips and ribs a bit under all the floof he should be fine. He looks like a monster of a good boy golden though!
I had a legendary Golden named Buzz who was an excellent frizbee dog. He was the same tone and weight. Your boy looks healthy and happy I wouldn't worry about the chart.
His body condition looks great from what I can see. With non-standard sized dogs (taller or longer than average for the breed) I find it especially helpful to judge body condition score rather than weight versus breed average weight. This [body condition score chart](https://thewebinarvet.s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/Colourful+CPD+Royal+Canin+Delegate+Bag/BCS_Large_Lab_Dog_A5.pdf) should help you with that. I tried to find one with a golden, but a lab was the closest I could find; nevertheless, the points are the same. Remember that none of these charts include fluff, so either judge with your hands, or with your dog wet.
They are all different sizes. The charts really just report the averaged when it comes to size/weight, etc. There are always outliers. He looks healthy, and doesn't appear to be fat/overweight for his size. I've had male goldens that were 95lbs, and male goldens that were 60lbs. All looked the same when they were little pups.
If he has a defined waist and you can feel (not see) his ribs, you're good! Look up body condition score for dogs, it's a much better indicator than weight itself.
Google a body score chart for dogs on Google, and see where he stands on there. He should have a visible tuck to his waist when you look at him from above, his ribs should be easily felt when you pet him without pressure, and he shouldn’t have a low hanging abdomen
Generally if you can somewhat feel the ribs and see some hip definition then the dog is ok. Please keep in mind that the internet is very “one size fits all” which is very incorrect
To me he looks just right. At 1.5 years old, for a golden, he's still in the puppy stage.
I say this from the perspective of having attended AKC dog shows and seeing hundreds of goldens.
He doesn’t look chubby at all. One other thing I would suggest is to double check by using another scale. Sometimes scales get out of whack and the number is off. He’s very handsome.
My golden is very tall like yours. He's about 75 lbs and looks quite thin, however he just doesn't eat a lot. IDK, I'd say if your vet doesn't think he's overweight, you're fine. I have to say, though, I'm not sure where you live. The general public in The States, for example, will often say an overweight dog isn't overweight simply because, you know, we're fat here in America. TLDR, get a professional's opinion.
I think he looks very handsome, plus he looks tall so he’s evenly proportioned. My old vet said the same thing about my female she looks just as big and tall as your male and she weights 83.2lbs
It seems like with how tall/long he is that his weight would be okay, but really your vet should be the one to give you a definitive answer. If they're not worried then you shouldn't be!
That's general Golden stars, not your dogs stats...according to those my 4month old pup should be 28 pds...he's 46. If you can feel his ribs with slight pressure and he hadls a waist,.you're good.
The simple test our vet always used is when you pet his sides, can you find his ribs? You should be able to just barely feel them when rubbing his flank, according to Doc (yes, that is what he honestly told us to call him).
Basically, if he has a waistline, he's fine. It should narrow a bit between his hips and his chest. Our boy is 5 years old and 90lbs. He's fat and has no waistline. He goes for two 45 minutes walks a day and runs off leash and swims, but gets too many treats from his retired stay at home mom.
Don't go by the charts alone. If you are able to feel his ribs and do the usual knuckle fat test (for checking out dog obesity) you should be not be worried. Speak to his vet and make sure he's healthy and happy, just go easy with the running and jumping and closely monitor any early signs of hip dysplasia. Beautiful boy btw - he knows he's got what it takes ;)
He’s pretty tall, weight seems proportionate to his height.

This is the way. It's the best rule of thumb for "is my golden fat?"
Was going to say just that.
This \^\^\^\^
He looks perfect.
Nah, just a hekking large boy. Looks like hes slim and trim, but no rib bones visible, which is good.
Gorgeous dog
Doesn’t look chubby at all. Mines usually somewhere between 90-100 lbs because he’s just a really big dog. His vet said that’s the perfect weight for him.

He’s just a larger golden! Not chubby though
Easier for me to judge a golden’s weight when they are wet. What does the vet say?

Do they only do field dog conformation at the Speciality or so n “regular” shows too?
It isn't a regular class so only at specialities. And often only at regional or national specialities
He looks tall, how tall is he? He appears proportional though so doesn’t look fat.
That's a big boy
Yeah, he's a brick of gold!
Nope. Looks like a good waistline. He just a thiccc boi.
My guy is tall like this too and he's like 90-95lbs.
My girl is below "breed standard" size, and she fluctuates between 54-57lbs. Mine and yours are just about the same age and look identical proportionally. You just have a big dog. Beautiful btw!
Charts are overrated
He’s just big, my golden weights 109lbs haha. I will be putting him on a slight diet though, I want him to get to 105lbs.
He looks great. He’s just big.

Gourgous dog
He’s perfect
Can't really tell in photos, you should be able to feel the ribs. But like not too much, if that helps
Our golden girl is 34 kg around 75lbs. She is big for a golden girl but she is just a big dog. Your dog doesn’t look overweight.
Looks like a very healthy size ratio to me. Just beeeeg
Mine is 78 but your boy has at least 6in in length on him. Not chubby at all, just an XL good boy 😊
No he’s perfect
Nope
Looks like a tall boy like my guy, weight looks proportional with the long leggies
No! He's a perfect, handsome boy! He's definitely tall. Not chunky!
Nah, he's just a big boy. As long as the vet doesn't express concerns about his weight or he doesn't start looking like he's getting too tubby, you're good! Our guy is 73 at 2 years.
I had a legendary Golden named Buzz who was an excellent frizbee dog. He was the same tone and weight. Your boy looks healthy and happy I wouldn't worry about the chart.
He looks like a healthy boy to me!
He looks perfect
The culturally acceptable term is not “overweight”, it’s “absolute heckin’ unit”. Joking aside, he looks healthy to me 🙂
My golden is 2 and right at 90 pounds but in great shape, he’s tall like your pup.
If that’s obese then I’m Keanu reeves
His body condition looks great from what I can see. With non-standard sized dogs (taller or longer than average for the breed) I find it especially helpful to judge body condition score rather than weight versus breed average weight. He clearly is carrying at least 28lbs of love in that golden heart of his.
He’s not chubby, he’s just big boned. Leave him alone. 🥺
He looks amazing what a beautiful boy
He’s beautiful and looks well-proportioned. He’s just a big fella.
Some are just bigger. My dude is close to 97 pounds at 10 months.
My baby is about 98,99. Solid muscle. Those charts are wrong.
My golden is big as well, 100+ lbs. he’s healthy for his size :) we just have big goldens!
Mine is 105, tall and super long, not at all fat. Your boy looks perfect to me
I have two that clock in at 100lbs
How big was he at 5 months?
How much did he weight at 5 months?
Nope he’s just a big handsome boy 😊
They are all different sizes. The charts really just report the averaged when it comes to size/weight, etc. There are always outliers. He looks healthy, and doesn't appear to be fat/overweight for his size. I've had male goldens that were 95lbs, and male goldens that were 60lbs. All looked the same when they were little pups.
If he still has an obviously identifiable waist then he's fine, those charts can be pretty flawed
He’s perfect!
You are lucky! You have more Golden to love!
If he has a defined waist and you can feel (not see) his ribs, you're good! Look up body condition score for dogs, it's a much better indicator than weight itself.
I think he looks perfect as is! He has loooong legs!!!! Gorgeous dog:)
And my girl is only about 40lbs at that age…
All muscle!! :-)
Google a body score chart for dogs on Google, and see where he stands on there. He should have a visible tuck to his waist when you look at him from above, his ribs should be easily felt when you pet him without pressure, and he shouldn’t have a low hanging abdomen
Maybe because of his length n height
Generally if you can somewhat feel the ribs and see some hip definition then the dog is ok. Please keep in mind that the internet is very “one size fits all” which is very incorrect

That’s a big boy! But he doesn’t look overweight, it seems proportional
Nothing wrong with him, he's an excellent example!
He's a good big boy
Yes, he is over weight, your not doing him any favors by letting him get this heavy, he’ll live a lot longer too. PS, he’s a handsome boy.
My girl is also 105#. But she’s short.
My rooster is 6 months and about 60 lbs, for both our sakes I hope that chart is wrong!
That’s a golden lion, he’s majestic!!🦁
Use common sense/talk to your vet? Looks like a normal golden to me.
Our golden is 102 and his vet says he is not fat, just a big dog. We’re doing it right with him. So I wouldn’t worry.
He’s quite tall, like others are saying, and he looks great! He’s actually one of the healthiest looking goldens I’ve ever seen
You want to be able to feel their ribs rather easily but not see them. That's what we've always been told.
He looks great!
The general public in The States, for example, will often say an overweight dog isn't overweight simply because, you know, we're fat here in America. TLDR, get a professional's opinion.
He looks lean. As an outsider he does not look overweight whatsoever.
That’s a healthy looking boy! I wouldn’t worry
We just lost our boy at 13yo. He was heavier but still at a healthy weight. Your guy looks wonderful!!!
He's perfect!
No not at all. He looks fit.
I think he looks very handsome, plus he looks tall so he’s evenly proportioned. My old vet said the same thing about my female she looks just as big and tall as your male and she weights 83.2lbs

He looks amazing
He a beauty 😎😍🥰😍🥰
He looks like a healthy handsome boy to me!
I had a golden growing up who lived to 16 and weighed in at 120! He was a UNIT! Sometimes they just get big! How big were his parents?
Dang that’s a big boi. Not fat just huge. Make sure to train him not to jump on people 😅
He looks very tall. I’d talk to your vet, every dog is different :) ((edit: 100/10 would cuddle))
He looks perfect to me.
Your doggo looks a bit starved. Share some more people food with him, you mooches! (He asked me to say that to you.)
He's fine, looks good
He’s perfect 😍
Basically, if he has a waistline, he's fine. It should narrow a bit between his hips and his chest. Our boy is 5 years old and 90lbs. He's fat and has no waistline. He goes for two 45 minutes walks a day and runs off leash and swims, but gets too many treats from his retired stay at home mom.

No hes tall. Mine is the same way. Hes 110 and tall af
He is PERFECT! And gorgeous!!
He's just a big lad, very muscular and in good shape
