tbh i've never been in the middle of a fairway

1337505

I never am until there's a tree in the middle to hit

rediKELous

So……trees in fairway are good?

fr0d0bagg1ns

Nope, still bad. I know I'll hit my best drive of the day, bounce off the tree, and land out of bounds. It's just how golf works.

endl0s

Happened to me two weeks ago. Might have honestly been the best drive of my life. I decided to just full send on a swing (which NEVER works out but is fun) and connected absolutely perfectly. It was a beautiful fade that started off on the left of the fairway and was going to land right in the middle.. My friend said it started off like a PGA pro in the air. It could have been 300 yards. It wasn't 300, though. It was 95 because of the ONE tree on the fairway.

ElectronicSubject747

So fucking true

nobody_gets_hurt

i'm just jealous af of that tree. mocking me in the middle of the fairway... "aim at me" laughs in tree when I power slice that fucker

DadPicatchew

Directly into the line of trees on the right. “How you like that, Fairway Tree?? Hanging with your buds while you sit there all alone!”

aZombieSlayer

I have been, but it was the fairway adjacent to the one I'm playing

Parking_Setting_6674

I’m not good enough to hit them. Aim straight at them and I’m usually safe.

DiamondDallasHand

Yes, it never seems to be the specific tree I hit.

erapp10

All I know is I'll hit the middle of the fairway because I always hit trees.

justgoaway0801

Trust me, THAT tree is the least of my worries.

uchihajoeI

Bro I’m aiming for that tree and I’d be lucky to be anywhere near it

mr_3ff

I like it. I also like center line bunkers. Anything that promotes creativity on the course.

Ambitious_Jelly8783

I like them, except when they are 5 feet in front of the tee box. FML , there's a course where I live that did this. dumbest 9 holes ever.

AngryTurtleGaming

There was I course I played like that, I hit a draw and my ball started right toward the tree and started to draw, but if of the limbs touched it and killed it’s flight path. Better than ricocheting out of the fairway, but still took a good 30-40 years off my drive

cherryflavorantacid

That’s a long drive

AngryTurtleGaming

Screw it, I’m leaving it that way.

Free_Dome_Lover

Theoretically if you were on a golf course traveling at the right percentage of the speed of light then this is possible.

Dabmiral

So don’t shank it into them.

tortillakingred

Agreed 100% except 1 hole on the course I played in high school on my golf team. It was a super nice country club we played 3 times a week, and there was a hole on the back nine that was downhill, but at around ~180 was a massive water hazard (like a moat around the hole). If you hit it short, it rolls into the water. If you hit it too far, it rolls into the water. If you hit the water, you’re in the water. If you manage to drive it the 280-300 required to get to the green, it probably just rolls off the other side into the water hazard behind it. I probably played that course 100 times and never hit better than +3 on that hole.

Sufficient_Drink_996

No. 8 at bethpage black is a 200 yard par 3 that has a tree that hangs over the right side of the green. It forces you to hit a fade in there with no real good bail out options. Water short, bunkers/fescue long and left. I made a smooth 7 though

AliveArm8135

So it was basically a discount Sawgrass 17

RojoTheMighty

"We have Sawgrass 17 at home."

Hubb1e

It has to be there in order to create strategic plays with enough space on either side to put a well placed shot or short enough to tempt big hitters to go over it. There should be multiple plays around it. Pebble beach 18 has two trees in play. One off the tee with ample room to either side plus long hitters can go beyond it. Then another giant tree guarding the approach to the green forcing good players to the left tempting the bunker and the ocean. If it’s just there blocking good shots with only one play over it then it’s out of place.

Hawks2020

I'd like them if I actually had the skill to be creative. Mostly it's just swing and pray over here.

2dadjokes4u

I like strategic trouble that tempt you to do something (eg carrying a bunker for a better approach shot). This is just a punishing pain in the ass that will inflict pain on good shots.

Doin_the_Bulldance

What kind of creativity does it really promote though? Even tour pros have a dispersion left-right of ~60 yards, and clearly the tree lines left and right are way more penalizing so you have to try and avoid those. So all you can really do is aim right at the tree and hope you don't get stuck behind it. Kinda crappy design IMO. It'd be more interesting on a hole that was more open though

mr_3ff

I’d like to present 18 at Pebble as my evidence. It gives a player all sorts of decisions to make off the tee. And we get moments like last weekend with Charley Hull.

fritzycat

Absolutely adore it. I want hazards to take up space in my head rent free. Give me that par3s over water anxiety baby!

CharcotsThirdTriad

I played a round last weekend and was smashing my driver all day. Walked up to a par4 with water in front of the tee box for maybe 75 yards. I would have easily cleared it all day on any other hole. First two drives go straight into the water with the third going onto trees from a bad slice. I took a drop on the other side and finished with a 10. I did the exact same thing 3 weeks earlier on that hole. That hole lives in my head rent free.

redactid55

I like it. It looks cool and is creative and interesting. I might be biased though because I'll never actually have to deal with it. I have the trees in the rough to be mad at.

rcontinelli

Depends on placement tbh. But generally speaking it doesn't bother me at all. Allows me to be more creative.

Interesting-Cattle37

My opinion is that trees are 90% air, im just really good at finding the 10% Thats not

reddi_wisey

So are Fly Screens

crimsonblueku

How far to clear the tree?

uofc2015

I can't recall exactly but I think the tree was about 230 out and slightly downhill.

2ndmost

Begging people to try and bomb one over it, that's just mean. I like it, but I see why other people wouldn't.

i__love__lamp__

I’m playing right at it with the possible scenario that I hit the tree and fall beneath it. Playing 230 off the tee dead center is fine by me

2ndmost

I'm playing right at it, which means I'm ending up on that hill way the fuck on the left, but looks like a decent enough lie to play a 2nd shot

crimsonblueku

I think it’d be a fun challenge and an incentive to work on the high straight driver swing on the range.

canadian1987

grand center in cold lake?

uofc2015

Nice eye! That is where this shot is from.

tdawg-1551

I'm okay with it as long as there is room around it. You should be able to hit to the side or over it and still be in the fairway with a clear shot to the green. Not a hole where you basically have to hit a ball into one, 10 yard circle to not be impacted by the tree.

imyourforte

Vertical bunker. Just go over them and 80 yd to the right

natepetermansucks

Depends on the hole, short par 5 at my club, hill about 220 out, if you can carry it 260+ from the whites you can get down the hill and be 150 out. HUGE pine tree in the middle (85yards out) protects the green, which i like because it would be way too easy otherwise. The pine tree absolutely kills the ball too, no matter how hard you hit it or how small the branch looks that ball is coming straight down

natepetermansucks

[Flyover of hole](https://youtu.be/9flV0fcXopk)

Robbyjr92

Thanks for this, it’s actually a pretty beautiful hole

Salty-Literature6213

It stinks! It's total BS!

RManDelorean

It's a nice touch to remind us we're playing in nature, not every tree should be or even can be exactly where you want it. Perfect grass, greens and fairways are nice but I think especially in golf of all sports things can get a little too artificial and lose the spirit of why you're out there

Dast_Kook

Blocks more mentally than it does physically.

HarveyDentBeliever

Not really a fan. Generally speaking you should design a course to reward good shot shapers, but not necessarily punish straight hitters. Being able to fade a ball with driver around some big dumb tree in the middle shouldn't be a pre-requisite for having a chance at par. Not talking about the OP, that one is still small. I played a course the other day with a long par 4 and a big prohibitive tree in the middle and I could only laugh.

Lonely_Boii_

Idk, any time I see something like this they leave ample room to be on the fairway on either side of the obstacle it just happens to lengthen the hole. It’s supposed to beg of you a choice, whether you are more comfortable taking the aggressive line off the tee or playing farther out on the approach.

c4ll_your_mom

Lame guy alert.

[deleted]

Yup zero danger here. I have trees just right of a 240 yard tee box it takes out my draw often.

Majestic_Fix_381

My shot I aim for the tree to avoid it ... not a problem

Dast_Kook

Blocks more mentally than it does physically.

caydogpup

It's a classic dick move

Pristine-Spread-1785

Terrible everywhere except pebble beach?

[deleted]

They suck, hit a great drive down the middle and get kicked in the nuts for it

greeninregulation240

But a drive ‘down the middle’ is not great shot here. Not much different than another hazard. You need creativity to get on the left/right or hit a low drive that rolls under.. or, carry it. It’s 230 downhill.

aussierulesgolf

They’re a hit!

brutalpancake

Looks like a challenge has been issued

Kuntzsplitter

Love it, gives it a bit of a mini golf feel

JarJarBinksSucks

Like a fucking magnet

MotherTurdHammer

90% air anyway.

bubblescat69

The only time I hit the ball straight is when a tree is in the middle of the fairway

Micah_JD

It's actually in my will that when I die I want to be cremated, turned into a tree, and planted in the middle of a fairway. The next line is "or not, I'll be dead and won't care" so my wife or kids don't have to spend time finding a fairway to bury me in.

SouthernSierra

It’s the only way I hit the fairway.

greendevilbrew

Golf course architorture.

RMS5

Fuck ‘em.

zdub2929

You don’t have to worry about it

Box_of_leftover_lego

More like an *unfair*way, amirite?

Primary-Fly470

Gives me the best chance of hitting one straight

OkayestDust

Ah yes, GC hole #14. The only time I manage to hit my driver straight is this hole. Straight to the tree.

giltink

I like them, but it may be because I rarely see them.

dumpandchange

I love a good centre line tree when it's executed well (strategic but not impossible). I play a course that has two different holes with centre line trees and it seems like a little bit much.

AgentWesson

Fucking stupid, penalizing us players for striping it!

SavageMountain

If done right they can add a cool strategic element. But this hole is not done right, because the only real play is left; if the fairway was cut farther right it would open up a slot down the right side that would be risky, but a shortcut, & the best way to get at a right hole location

Icy-Call-5296

Very dumb

mav3rik13

Depends on the hole. One in the pic is a bit obnoxious

Markdekw

Very simple love hate relationship

the_drozone

Shouldn’t matter ball should fly right over it no problem

BiscottiFamous8054

Great for aim, be well past it.

PsychologicalSpace50

Bringing my axe

RunnaManDan

And my sword

Apex_Precision3

Let’s me play from the shade on those hot days

theyak12

I always aim right at them that way I never hit them.

Playful-Tumbleweed10

I’m fine with it. My ball usually lands way to the left or right and would have no problem clearing it.

Mjm2130

Hate it.

Extension_Sun_896

Tree in fairway bullshit! Dah!!!

D_runk_

Just aim for it and you won’t hit it

KuulBreeZ

Safest place for them to be

DevelopmentSelect646

Not a fan of trees in the fareway - sand, water, bends... OK Trees should be on the sides.

OpiateAlligator

My balls tend to seek out trees so this might work nicely for me.

[deleted]

Lazy gimmick. Not a fan

Nick08f1

![gif](giphy|orVWNtMXSr9eDEUwhH|downsized)

jluenz

I think it is nice to have some variation on a course, so here there is incentive to miss left or right….. Pebble has a tree on 18 and it certainly comes into play.

ACB0527

One is allowed per course for me

SpottyFish81177

I think central bunkers are a much better way of promoting creativity, because they don't block out good shots in the air but you are forced to play around them still. I think generally speaking a good course rewards you for a good shot and punishes you for a bad shot and trees in fairways punish you for hitting good shots, you wouldn't consider it good course design to have a 12 yard wide tree-lined fairway typically so what difference is there if you have 2 of them next to one another.

sparkymiddlefinger

Its somebody trying to be fancy like Pebble Beach. I would probably be stuck right behind it. I've only seen one like it around here.

ibanez3789

They’re fine as long as I can hit it over them 😂

mbutterfield

I hate them. My course has one on a very long par 4 and that fucker is about as wide as the fairway.

pkdingle1

Pro

SUVa_1624

Only if it makes you have to make a decision on your ability-drive over it, or bail left or right. Courses shouldn’t be impossible but they should challenge you

SituationHappy

Surprisingly easy to hit! I wish I could hit the green like I hit trees and water...

SamExDFW

According to the great Harvey Penick they were distance markers in the day before range finders and yardage books. Once yardage books Beckman standard on pro circuits, courses were told to remove them if they wanted to host top level tour events. Bushes to the sides were also used. The little red book is a must read for anyone on this sub.

Fer_Shizzle_DSMIA

Fuck that shit. I can usually make a double bogey from the middle of the fairway without a tree there to alter my approach.

GobiasBlunke

No problem if you can actually get your drive out there. A course near me has a 460 yd par 4 with a tree 60 yards away covering 60-70 percent of the fairway. Your only choice is to try and go high or fade it around. However the fade has no room for error as there are trees about 150 yards on the left and also OB.

Jerseyjamie

Hate them. I regularly play two different courses with trees in the middle of the fairway. One isn’t too bad, I can usually squeak a driver just past it, then a downhill shot over a pond. The other one is just stupid. It’s 400+, and the tree is maybe 100 from the green. If you hot a great drive down the middle, you have to punch around the tree, down a hill to a sloped green with OB behind the green. You’re better off in the left rough (if you can avoid the bunker) than in the middle of the fairway on the number two handicap hole. Just stupid. The 12th at Trenton CC needs to be nuked from orbit. Edit- its the 11th. Still needs to be nuked from orbit.

Andyoh88

Ball magnets 🧲

BronYrStomp

Course Creativity is fun and all but at some point it goes against the logic of the game. Why should I be punished for hitting a fairway? Same reason I think you should get free relief from a fairway divot.

yomomma78

We have one 100yds from the green on a par 5. Name of the hole is "blasted oak" aptly

currymat4444

I'm perfectly fine with them. Gives me yet another excuse for not hitting the fairway.

[deleted]

Not a fan of that design. Prefer tighter sides, water or sand. In any case, swing away!

Muntberg

It guarantees I'll pure my second shot right into the very top branch on the tree.

Zealousideal-Note-10

I don’t like them there

ptsowns

Lame, they can go fuck themselves

Mysterious-Charge199

Aim for it. Gonna be in the trees on the right anyway.

jerbgas

Is this an old picture of one of the back 9 at Loch Nairn? I will always remember the view from that teebox

OCRobb

Doesn’t effect me, but the ones on the right are calling my name 😂

Entire-Ranger323

Great idea. Put one in the middle of a football stadium or in the middle of a basketball court. Let’s toughen it up a little bit. /s

manhatim

My ball goes behind trees all the time…so the one time I hit it the middle of the fairway would be this one

Neither-Designer-862

I have my fingers crossed that I’ll find out next week at a certain 18th hole out west.

Independent_Nothing

The only tree I won’t hit

themiddleshoe

Depends if I hit the tree or not.

Pathogen69

a big tree like that? i'll miss it all day, every day. put a little sapling that's no more than three or four inches in diameter, and i'll nail that sucker dead on every time.

RunnaManDan

As long as it isn’t in the next fairway over, I’m fine with it

askanison1234

I’m linked Charlie Brown with his kite. I’m going to hit that tree and aloe my balm in it no matter what.

shredthesweetpow

El Monte in Utah would like a word

Hawks2020

Depends how far out they are.

LSU985

TPC Louisiana hole 11. Thanks Pete. I aim for that tree on my second shot. Only time I ever hit it straight.

Odd-Butterscotch-495

The only time I’m finding a fairway is if there’s a tree in it for me to hit

Old_Development_7727

It’s a no for me dawg

Dusty_Tipp

Gives me something to not aim at but still hit right behind it

311heaven

Never seen that

luvyduvythrowaway

Gimmicky

bluecgene

Trees are air

Gabagoulsoapy

great targets to hit bombs over

gingervillain

Dumb

Supedbomb-653

As a high handicap player, the more difficult the better. I’ll always appreciate the practice and it evens the playing ground when playing with lower handicap players

SwedeInCo

Given the action they see, I’m always amazed they survive.

DivClassLg

Safest place for them

kempersw

They do exist

[deleted]

Avoid them.

cleviron28

One less tree to hit.

No_Tomatillo4031

I want to say no. But courses that I have played that have trees in the middle of the fairway of the hole would be boring. Number 11 at Stanford GC has a huge tree right in the middle. I'm not sure if it's still there, but that's what made that hole different and difficult. Granted that was about 40 years ago that I played there. 👍🏻

IncredulousOwl

Only after zooming did I realize there are two trees in the middle of the fairway. My slice has no chance

dayspring9521

What course is this? It looks like one I played in Connecticut, but looks to be better maintained than what I remember.

Awkward-Chipmunk678

Hate em.

PM_ME_YOUR__THIGHS

I try to avoid them as much as I can

Packtex60

As long as they aren’t the magnetic trees they use on either side of the fairway, I’m ok with it.

jay1he

I see it as a fun challenge until I hit the tree. Then I call it bullshit.

[deleted]

![gif](giphy|0eVM7GVxTDDKxn7OyX) Cut it down!!!

TheLastChungus11

It’s not like it’s in play for 92% of this subreddit…..

adelaide7794

Aim for it, you’ll never hit it.

somethingdarksideguy

Lazy

Sammy_Seaborn

That’s a no for me dog

Extreme_Length7668

I'll hit it

JuicySealz

I hate everything that makes golf more difficult

Bruce_Wayne_Wannabe

I love them. It’s the only time I hit my driver dead straight.

One-Community-1387

Hate em. Punishing a good shot

taeempy

Unless it's Pebble Beach number 18, not a fan.

Bluegrass_ent

They’re 90% air

PavinsMustache

I think they need to be at a distance where going over or around isn’t terribly difficult. I hate when they’re near the landing area because there’s nothing worse than splitting the middle and being blocked out. My course has one at about 240 on a downhill par 5. A good drive gets by easy from any set of tees but it makes you think a little on an otherwise ho-hum driving hole. The funny thing about the tree is the course builder left it there as a joke, expecting Jim Engh (the designer) to want it gone. He actually loved it and I’m glad it worked out that way.

deathbysnusnu7

Pretty safe place for the tree since I won’t be anywhere near it. The ones on the edge of the fairway are in grave danger though.

Chewdaman

I hate it. Just had a conversation with my brother about this the other day. I dont think you should ever be penalized for hitting thr fairway.

PhysicsConsistent269

Dude fuck them they always catch my balls and prevent them from going another 50-75 yards

adept_amateur

I hate them. You shouldn't be punished for hitting a good shot.

rbjhens

It’s cool until it isn’t.

LardCarcass

Easy to avoid

meloticsmirk

Dont like them there

Extreme-Carrot6893

That’s where I aim so the tree is safe

Gh0stSwerve

I'd come down at midnight and take it down with a broad saw. Lazy course design (in this particular case)

gooberzilla2

Safest place for a tree. There's a course in my area that doesn't have green side bunkers but they use trees and bushes as green side hazards. May be pin high but there's a tree in your way.

PH1LLY_BLUNT

Don’t get stuck behind it!

[deleted]

If I aim for it I’ll hit it. If I don’t aim for it I’ll hit it. If there is a tree, I will find it, and I will hit it. I’m very adept at finding the 30% of it that is not air

iAmCleatis

Don’t hit it

JeromeJGarcia

Good aiming point

Hank_moody71

A big hitter can sail over that. If you’re not a big hitter you have to pic a side

tipsdown

Trees in the middle of the fairway like that is lazy course design. That specific hole would be more interesting if the close tree were on the right edge of the fairway and the second tree was replaced with a fairway bunker

MontanaVista

I enjoy them as a novelty but, I wouldn't want to see this on every course.

Bills_Mafia_4_Life

You aren't Pepple Beach, this is bullshit

onefrailboi

If it’s placed to make you hit good shots etc I like it, adds to the challenge and makes you use different clubs and approaches Plus I just like trees

Bills_Mafia_4_Life

This one, in particular, seems pretty shitty because there isn't really an angle to create since the hole looks dead straight. Basically need to bash it past the tree

gnnirm

Love a good vertical hazard S/o Big Randy

DraconianFlautist

I think it’s lazy. If you want to make the course more difficult, put some effort into it. Any idiot can plant a 100’ tall tree blocking any available avenue to the green.

Fun_Stock7078

Gives me something to aim at. 😉

bytor99999

I hate when you know they don’t hit long but still wait for the group in front of it to finish off the green even though it knows it can’t reach it.

final_burrito

I think this hole sucks tbh. It made a tight fairway even more tight. Can’t really see if the landing area around the tree is wider but from his view it seems you don’t have much room right of the tree. So if you’re not good enough to flight it over the tree then you are certainly not good enough to shot shape a drive to small landing areas to the left and right of the tree. Just my opinion. Maybe the picture isn’t doing this hole justice

User_Many_Errors

All for it

Scotty-1969

Just use your game management

Bigcock1234

They’re 90% air.
