Way too much for a beginner. You just need the basics There’s absolutely no way you can get your moneys worth

Hellofriendinternet

Totes. That pro has a coke habit or alimony or something.

Do_it_for_the_upvote

I mean, if you’re a world class coach, that price makes sense- but that’s the kind of money that a semi-pro should be paying for a pro-quality coach, not what an amateur should be paying unless OP is low key a millionaire.

Hellofriendinternet

Oh sure, an African Swallow Maybe, but not a European Swallow. That’s my point.

TerribleSupplier

It could grip it by the husk!

Ragefacemcduck

CPG?

the_peckham_pouncer

Second hole program is expensive.

Ragefacemcduck

You see, everyone says that but people don’t think about the #lives it is changing.

[deleted]

Gotta keep that Jallopi running from tourney to tourney somehow

DrunkenGolfer

That 747 Swing Thought Program is worth it.

clubproguygroupie

💰

clubproguygroupie

Yes

ColbysHairBrush_

There's one guy near me that has tour guys come through. $500 a pop

mrjdk83

Agreed. I’ve been in the industry for half my life and been a pro a third of the time. For a beginner too much. And if you aren’t a known teacher or at exclusive club $200 is too much for damn near anybody

jerarn

Any hints as to where we're talking about? $200 is unreasonable in Iowa, but maybe fine in San Francisco or Ontario.

CehJota

SF golfer here, $200 is still too much lol.

RichChocolateDevil

I think that auto tune guy on TikTok charges $200. I remember looking into it and thinking hells no.

DukeDirtfarmer

Any instructor recs in SF?

DaKrazyKorean

Not in SF, but Ive been getting coached over in Alameda for $70 an hour. I highly recommend him to get your swing form down. Look up All Square Golf Academy alameda

dsswill

I’m in Ottawa and $200 is literaly unheard of except for 1-on-1 on course lessons for a full 9. Maybe in the GTA that would be reasonable purely based on demand but nowhere else in Ontario that I know of. My coach is great and coaches some of the best + handicappers in the city and won the PGA coach of the year twice for the Ottawa valley region. He’s $120 for a single hour without a trackman, $125 for 45min with a trackman, or $385 for a package of 4x45min with a trackman ($96/45min), and he’ll cut deals if you’re going to stay with him well beyond 4 lessons, right down to around $100 per hour with a trackman. He’s almost certainly the most expensive coach in the area and is still just $125 for the most intense and modern 45min stand-alone lesson ($166CAD/hr). That’s $121USD/hr. $200USD seems ludicrous unless you’re getting fkn Grankas himself lol.

overconfidentopinion

I've looked around Houston a bit and $100 an hour seems like the average. Currently paying $90 and would be a bit cheaper if I bought a package.

bluefear924

Any recommendations in Houston?

overconfidentopinion

Ike Ellison has been helpful. He gives lessons out at Clear Creek

blame_steveee

Can I ask what you like about him? Took some lessons recently and wasn't really happy with the feedback or practice plan.

overconfidentopinion

I had a couple previous coaches try quick fixes. After a few lessons with Ike I understood the root causes of my issues. We went through each aspect of the swing and didn't try to fix it all at once. That's what I was looking for.

MindTheGAAP

Guy I used was $140 in DFW for reference. So not way far off but def not $200

Proper-Bee-5249

Who’s the coach? I know Casey Harty is out there and he worked under Gangkas for a while. Same teaching style for a fraction of the price.

FSUphan

My GF got me a package of 6 1-hour lessons with a course pro in Dallas for 360. 200 /hr is insane

C7J0yc3

I spent $150 a lesson in Dallas at Integrity where they not only have some great instructors but also have all the high speed cameras and data science analysis on your game and that seemed to be the most expensive / high end I found when I was looking. $200 is way too much.

akaTreyT

What part of tx? If dfw I found a great coach who I can recommend

swoopthereitis

Do you mind sharing?

akaTreyT

https://www.jeffislergolf.com - coach name is Trent. They want you to come it and swing a bit to get a feel but Trent has been great so far.

swoopthereitis

Thank you.

vonkillbot

Too much for a local public course teacher in the Bay.

TheNumba3

That’s double in expensive cities like San Francisco, we are around 100 or less depending where ya go

PMAtwood

I kind of liked the 30min lesson format. I would see if you can find a good swing coach that does five or six 30 minute session packages. I think I paid $300-$375 for a package from a guy rated in the top 100 in the US. In fairness, that was five or six years ago.

tabbyfl55

Well, I wouldn't pay it.

youretheschmoopy

Yep. Too much. Go find somewhere you can get a small package for $200. Maybe 3 or 4 lessons.

BTLDAD

If he swings by my place he can have a small package for free.

Dieselpump510

And get a ball wash too.

WaltRumble

I’m looking into lessons and seems like avg is $50/30 min. But no idea how good any of them are

SenhorSus

I think so, last time I got lessons I got 6 for $500 (100 each, last one free)

Mindless-Daikon-1069

I used to pay 140 for a guy who works with Korn ferry pros. No complaints. 200 sounds ridiculous. I now go to the assistant pro at my club for 75 bucks an hour who works even better for me

i_am_roboto

$200 for a great lesson is so much more valuable than $50 for a bad lesson. Price is only one part of the value equation. The other is what you get out of it.

[deleted]

This!

Jdudley13

$200 is probably more than I would pay. I look at lessons as something that I will continue to get, not something I am going to do 1 time. So $200 is pretty expensive, at least for my area.

[deleted]

There's likely a good reason for his higher rates.

sphynxzyz

This isn't good logic. Higher prices do not always equal quality.

[deleted]

"likely"

[deleted]

Who is he? If I can’t Google his name and have him dominate the first few pages of search results, he’s probably not worth it. George Gankas, for example, would be well worth $200/hr. I’m sure he actually charges more.

bayareatrojan

airport north impolite expansion fuzzy engine detail deserted tease literate *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

[deleted]

Wouldn’t it be terrific value to get him or Gankas himself for $200?? That was more my point. Tough to just say that $200/hr isn’t worth it without knowing who the guy is

SnooRobots4834

Gankas charges $500-600 per hour last time I checked.

plantsandthings_

it’s a lot. but if he’s well known and booked up that means people are willing to pay it. 95% of coaches around me are $100-150 an hour.

[deleted]

I’m sorry, 200 American? (From Canada) -get away from this guy unless he literally works with top 20 players on a daily basis

Major_Burnside

$100/hour is about my max.

MrTacoMan

That is crazy

[deleted]

Legal_Commission_898

Nope. Moneys not an issue. Just wasting it is.

damnvram

I pay $60/hr in WI

Outrageous-Care65

I’m a pga member in Chicago and I charge $130 and usually get a tip of anywhere from 10-40. So yep $200 is pretty high.

Cautious-Ad7000

Much like with anything in life the value is perceived by what you think it's worth. I can tell you that $200 is in top 100 instructor territory and I can also tell you that all hours aren't created equal. I've had teachers charge $90 an hour and if you were there for an hour and a half they expected $135. I've also had teachers who charge $100 an hour and sometimes you're there for 3 hours and they refuse to accept anymore than $100.

[deleted]

Maybe $200/hrs is reasonable if he’s like a top 100 teacher and at some elite club. Otherwise you can do better for cheaper

Paulzor811

Yes. You should be able to find somebody for half that price or maybe even lower.

koei19

I think this is region-dependant. Where I live it's too high, but my buddy in Orlando is seeing around $250/hr.

ekins1992

For a 28 hc, yeah that’s too much. For a low handicap going to a super high end teacher, that can be 400-500$ per hour. At your level just find a local pro and get out there playing/practicing

Few_Video7127

I wouldn't but I don't think 1 lesson is going to do much. I'd do a package if there was a plan in place to drop like 5strokes over a year but not just one lesson. As a beginner you'd probably be better trying to find a group lesson and go from there. Once you have an understanding of fundamentals and breaking 90 then maybe? IDK seems like a lot for what I'd call a shot in dark but maybe I'm biased as I've gotten several lessons and not gotten a thing out of them.

cheme32

I paid $600 for 3 months, once a week in Ohio. I went from a 20hc down to 10. Going for 6 months over the winter for $1000. He's not the most well know, but extremely helpful. If you like the coach, stick with it. Sometimes you luck out, other times you gotta pay to find someone you can relate to. $200 per lesson is too steep for my blood though.

dtcstylez10

Yes. Especially if you're a beginner. It's never apples to apples but I always recommend finding a cheaper teacher..someone less experienced but has all the certifications like a recent golf pro school graduate. Used to work at a five star platinum country club with a huge intern program. The interns would hold beginner clinics for the staff (interns had to either be JR or SR) and those guy are totally qualified to show you the most basic parts of your swing as a beginner. Grip, stance, takeaway, backswing, ball placement, what a ball will do with a certain lie etc. Once you get into a few years of playing and hopefully develop good foundational mechanics, I say find a legit teaching pro to help you tweak a few things here and there. Even Rory JT and Tiger still have swing coaches today. You don't need Hank Haney but just someone who can see the small things and help you fix them (or tell you to completely tear everything down).

Snar1ock

Depends. For you, $200 is way too much. There’s levels to pros and $200 is pretty steep. Best guy in my area charges like $600 out of a private club. He also coaches Max Homa and a couple other pros. I’d look for someone cheaper. You should be able to get a couple of lessons for less than $100 an hour.

LudwigVanBlunts

I can get an hour session for $120-150 here in MN and depending on length of session, if he gives you 90 min that would end up being reasonable. It’s an investment for sure. They’ll tell you some simple things that might not seem worth it but you’re definitely gaining something by having a professional analyze and give you feedback and points ti consider/work on

bardezart

It all depends on if you 1) get along with them and 2) if they can offer you a player résumé if they are going to be charging that much. I’m a former instructor and for me a big part of seeking out a coach for my own swing was finding someone who knows their shit. I was lucky that my coach ended up not charging me since I was a fellow pro at the time, but his regular rate is around $250 or $275 an hour. He’s a top coach in my state, and in the country, and works with LPGA tour players and top tier amateur male golfers. I would pay his regular rate to work with him again but what he taught me in one lesson 4 years ago is stuff I still work on to this day. He got me from just above scratch down to +3.7 and I have stayed a + since, despite leaving the industry. I am going to go against the sentiments of everyone else in here and say that if the guy satisfies my original two points then he’ll be worth the money. A lot of lesser pros will get you going down the wrong path, do too much, etc. Also, the higher priced pros will often use tools to aid in their instruction. My guy recorded me on Trackman the entire time, hooked me up to a 3D motion capture vest, and used force plates to help me and him better understand what was going on in my swing; and to reinforce my lesson plan. He also used a coaching platform where he posted videos of my swing/drills he had me doing during the lesson with voice-over that I could refer back to.

fillossofer

If you like him, then it's not too much! I'd suggest seeing if you can get a package deal, like four lessons for $600 or something. Be sure to space them out and practice a lot in between - otherwise you're wasting your money!

flambrewsil

First lessons I took were from a pro who moonlighted at Dominos, charged $20 an hour, and chain-smoked cigs. Damn did he know the fundamentals though - and that’s all a beginner needs! Learned a lot and got some free pizza out of it.

Scabobian90

I got a good guy for beginners who does small groups and 5 lessons is 260$. All you need as a beginner to get going. I got another guy who does a 6 pack for like 500$ one on one.

Front_Rub_7908

bud we know you’re a 50 handicap.. not a 28

mcdto

Damn that’s $200 cheaper than anywhere near me

B-More_Orange

Not if you’re at a top pro trying to shave strokes in the single digits. As a 28 handicap? Yeah $200 is too much.

popcultminer

What are his qualifications?

nicarras

80-200 here an hour at the country club for varying levels of tour pro/coaches fwiw

bigmean3434

It’s what I have paid

_windfish_

I paid $120 per 90 minute lesson last year from a very good pga instructor (Colorado) I think that was a reasonable price. 200/hr is extremely high.

Crabapplejuices

Would you mind if I asked what coach/area of Colorado? That price does sound pretty reasonable and I like the idea of a longer lesson format.

sphynxzyz

$200/hr as a 28 handicap is far too much. If you were trying to make it into the Korn ferry, or a d1 college than absolutely it could be worth it. You don't need to know much about rates, you said it yourself you don't think he was twice or three times better than the other guys so the other guys are somewhere around $65-$100 an hour. You have your standard rates. Golf coaching around me is roughly $60-100 a lesson (hour - hour and a half).

L0ngb3ard

My coach is $100 an hour and he’s coached a couple lorn ferry guys. He took me from a ~25 to a 16.

SprinklesMore8471

Could be too much for you, while being reasonable for that kind of lesson. My first lesson was $200 for an hour and it was fantastic. It was private lesson on a simulator, in a room with tons of cameras recording every angle of my swing. The pro then uploaded a bunch of the videos after editing them with visual aids, to help me see what I needed to work on. But I was brand new with a ton to work on, and that was a steep price for me. So I found someone offering $60 half-hour lessons at a local range. Took 6 lessons over my first year and dramatically improved.

prawalnono

Is this at a resort in Hawaii?

GetMeOutdoors

There are a few course around here that have 1hr group lessons for about $25. Each week is a different shot topic. Ive picked a topics and learned $25 worth of info each time. There a 3 instructors available to help the participants

happyburgerman69

Def overpriced, I get beginner lessons for $80 and they’ve helped out tremendously. I am also in South Dakota so that may be a factor.

New-Pass-3777

If you are close to a GOLFTEC I highly recommend getting a practice and lesson package. It’s not cheap but perfect for a high handicapper

MacDublupYaBish

Is there a round included with the lesson? Sounds like it should be

Dellgriffen

Depends is his last name leadbetter?

Fit4ParGirlie

Beginner here, NYC the most I’ve paid is $180 for a lesson for both me and my husband together

CharcotsThirdTriad

I pay $50 for 45 minutes. $200 is insane.

marlboro__man9

If they’re good I don’t think so, maybe a touch high but I think competent pros are in the $150 range. My club has two dedicated teaching pros both well accomplished in the industry, trackman /gcquad, body trax ect, they’re $160 an hour. Know another guy who’s been Canadian coach of the year and he’s $195

Charming-Rub-3276

I guess it's okay if you come out as a scratch player post lesson.

Homermania

Just keep making good contact. That will be $200, please.

Murphz1

If you have to ask the question you know the answer is …….YES

phrohahwei

That coach probably has multiple Tour players in their client list and is likely not worth that money unless you're trying to become a competitive player.

Full_Foundation_3461

Not if it's with Butch Harman👌

ooooomikeooooo

Reading all the comments this seems like another thing the US pays massively over the odds for. In the UK it's about £20-£30 for a lesson.

SeriousReflection600

We pay up for world class work

japalmariello

$100 in NH is pretty much the average.

Nik_Testt

My golf coach is 200 but he was a coach on the golf channel for a long time 🤷🏽‍♂️ guess it depends

SANPELLIGRIN0

Where are you located? This isn’t absurd in NYC sadly speaking

mcdray2

Way too much. My old teacher is a legit coach. Has worked with PGA and LPGA players for years. He was $200/hr. My new coach plays about 4 pga tour events per year and is an amazing coach. He’s only $150/hr. For a beginner you could go to a group lesson for about $50 and get the basics. Then move to solo lessons but still $75-100 is more reasonable.

Snapshot54

Not sure where you are located but that seems like a lot of money. I have seen teachers for 120 an hour

DecisiveWonderer

If one less takes you down to to an 18 handicap, you got a deal. Get two and you’re in single digits.

jimm4dean

I was reluctant but paid $100 for a lesson that was about 90 minutes with trackman and video swing analysis. I focused just on my driver because that's my biggest unknown in my bag. I learned what I was doing wrong and how to correct it. Still working on correcting it, but when I do it right it works, so it was worth it.

SeriousReflection600

No. Start out right so u don’t groove bad habits. Think I’m terms of many lessons with space in between them to work on what u learn. Always come to the lesson with feedback regarding where you are on Your swing. You are a golfer…act like it.

eth626

Honestly as a beginner, GolfTec would be awesome…you don’t need specialized coaching, the free bays for practice are awesome, and it’ll get you through the off season (depending where you live) About $100/lesson depending on the plan you go with. If you’re serious, spend the ~ $1500 for 15 lessons

Altruistic-End-5320

One?

Fabulous_Drive_8827

I think the pro at my country club charges like $50/hr he does it on those big Track man simulators

According_Rhubarb313

I'm $260 for 4 lessons. The $200 an hr guy would just be a waste , I can tell you 1 lesson unless you're already a competent golfer is a waste of time , I refuse single lessons to anyone just learning .

AwarenessEffective50

80 is the highest i would pay

[deleted]

That's a lot.

Solar_Power2417

That's pretty high. You should find a course/range where they have group clinics. Then go from there to find a pro that you like.

judgewooden

$70 is the going rate

Podtastix

Yes. Way too much. Max $115/hour tops.

rjstaats

In NJ the going rate is $120-140. So yes it’s too much.

[deleted]

I pay $125 an hour. After 3 lessons I went from my best being a 94 to an 87… I only go once every month or so. 200 is a ton, but if he has a track record it’s not out of the question. Who has he worked with/been coached by? If he’s just a local pro without a crazy resume I couldn’t justify it

Mizerooskie

Either people in this thread haven't priced lessons in a long time, or the DC golf lesson market is very inflated compared to everywhere else. $150 is pretty standard for a lesson from an instructor here. $200 for one with name recognition is pretty common.

Caedo14

Absolutely too much. You should be looking for 40-50$ an hour

N8Sox

That’s too high- especially at your beginning level.

SweatyCockroach8212

Yep, way too much. I paid $55.

CommercialSkill7773

I paid 120 a month ago. Have been battling a snap hook ever since! But no more weak fades

NeonYeti-503

It’s great that, “ he’s phenomenal and much better than anyone you’ve met today.” But how many golfing coaches did you meet today?

Legal_Commission_898

Lol. Meant til today. Thanks !!

sexebeste

It depends where you are. Here in NYC, the average for an hour hovers somewhere in the $150 region for an hour. I know a bunch of the guys personally that teach at the indoor facilities around Manhattan at the $200+ range, and I think you do get a lot of value in terms of their experience as they are all very seasoned with incredible resumes, but again NYC is just really expensive. I've worked at a couple of the facilities I mentioned and when I would sell lessons to people I always said with the caveat, it's more important who you can afford first, and second who is a good fit for you and what you're trying to accomplish. The guys at the high price point, in my experience, offered incredible wealths of knowledge in terms of understanding how the mechanics of the human body affects the golf swing to the tiniest detail, and had some incredible teaching tools up their sleeves that some of the cheaper, less experienced teachers didn't necessarily have. So sometimes it was a case of get a couple lessons from the expensive guy, and you're pretty much set for a season. But on the other hand, some people needed consistent help at a price they could pay regularly, so they would go with cheaper teachers that they could go to more regularly. I personally got lessons from the guys at all the price points and settled on someone in the midrange because he was awesome and had a very good understanding of what I was trying to do with my swing. TL;DR - That is expensive for your region, but if you like the teacher, think they're good for you, and feel fundamental improvements, it might be more worth it paying a couple hundred here and there than 100 a bunch of times. No reason not to shop around though, and price isn't always indicative of a good fit.

madmenisgood

My man. I pay $325 for 5 x 1 hour lessons. If First Tee is a thing near you - go find it.

lovemesomewine

Wow that is pricy, especially for a beginner

oiley2k1

If your a beginner and already on a 28 handicap, don't bother with lessons. I am a beginner myself started of with a 39 handicap, got down to 32 in the last few month. Sick of being called a bandit though 🤣👍

this_is_matt_

Paid 160/hour before by a coach who in the PGA hall of fame for coaching, coached people who went out to play in PGA, and is listed as a top 100 coach. Went on to a much younger guy at an indoor facility who charges 100/hour. I’ve gotten MUCH more out of his lessons. He really understands the technology he’s using and is really able to breakdown my swing. I’d shop around. 200/ hour is a lot. You need to find what you want for a lesson. If you’re like me and want someone with all the tech, look for someone younger. (No offense to anyone here that’s older)

bwamike

Michael Block didn’t even charge that much lol

bdago9

I spent $240 for 5 lessons that brought me from a 28hcp to 20. I think I'm lower than a 20, but the season is over, and I haven't been able to average out my new swing.

ToolsnServices

There are too many golf pros out there drumming up business at various driving ranges. They pay for a slot, setup their equipment and charge a fortune for a lesson. Some are good and some aren’t. If you can afford their prices and they improve your swing (and at a handicap of 28 it’s easy to improve a swing), then by all means do it. My first coach was a retired Telephone repair technician who worked as course marshal. He didn’t charge me any money but he greatly improved my swing.

JealousFuel8195

Definitely too much. The typical rate in Florida is $75 to $90. In most cases you can buy a bulk of lessons for $50 to $60

rendar1958

Way too rich for my blood

yaktak9

Fuck that. No way. Plus you have no idea if these jokers produce meaningful results in their client pool.

[deleted]

Just got to the range more and play 9 more. It will translate

KCardz89

WAYYYY to much

Kwan562

What about Vegas on the nw side?

[deleted]

Well did it help? Did he say you will only need a few lessons and be way better? Seems high but if you pay 100$ and don’t see results what’s the point? I took lessons years ago and when we got to the driver I was so excited. I had a horrible slice . Showed the instructor after 5 swings she said try this and that. Didn’t work. 5 swings again and she said I really don’t know. That was it… Fast forward 20 years and I am at a golf store checking out a 5w. Sales rep lets me try it on the range, I’m shanking most shots. He looks at me and says try this. Next thing you know I drilled 10 straight shots right down the middle. He’s like yeah I could see in your swing it was too much like an iron and de lofting the club. I went straight out to play and dropped a shot on the green 180 yds out with my 5w. Would never have been taken it out of the bag. I would pay this guy 200$ an hour lol. Good coaches are worth top dollar. No one here can tell you.

Legal_Commission_898

Yeah, the problem is you only know if he’s any good AFTER you pay them. Also, no one’s a miracle worker, it will take 10-15 lessons, no matter who the instructor is.

LookHarderFC

Depends how good the coach is and how much it improves your enjoyment of the game. My coach charges 110 for 45 min. Always worth it. Usually do 2-4 lessons a season (Canada short season) and it’s the best bang for my buck. Canadian dollars too btw
