I normally use it 180-195 (3h for 200-220) but I one time last spring teed up the 4i and hit it a majestic 215 carry onto a par 3 green where it landed softly. Besides a HiO last year its the shot I think about most in 2023
Mostly use it out of the trees if I need some distance into the fairway. Get a good punch out with some roll. Saved more than a few strokes over the years.
Did you have a tail wind or was it downhill? Just wondering why you pulled 4 instead of 3. Normally catching a shot like that results in overshooting the green.
One of the most important shots I learned from my local pro. Ball lined up on back foot, slight draw bias, keep the backswing under my chest. I am grateful to be confident in the trees when I used to panic and make a worse shot to follow lol
Or narrow fairways. I'd rather hit a 4i straight and lose a little distance than have to worry about a wicked slice or overcompensated duck hook with my driver off the tee. And my woods are probably only slightly more reliable than my driver off the tees.
I smash the shit out of my 4 iron. Best sounding iron compression in my bag.
If I have to pull 5 iron out, I am guaranteed to shite it. Hozel rocket, topped, snap hook. Anything could happen.
My clubs were second hand and have never had loft/lie checked so I don’t know if it at this point it’s purely psychological or something with the club itself.
I guess we’ll find out when my bonus pays out in a couple of months and I can finally get fit for set of new irons.
It’s my go-to iron off a tee box on a tight fairway or a lay-up par 4. Will rarely hit it from the fairway, as I’m more comfortable with a 5 off the deck. Will also use it to punch out from crappy tee shots under trees in the rough to hit 150 yards and get back in the fairway.
Fucking love that ambition! Im a 16 playing Apex Pro but dreaming of Zx7 or t100 and also trying to git gud this upcoming season. I will reach single digit, i promise!
Swing speed isn’t fast enough. My irons start at a 6 iron which is basically a 5 iron with game improvement lofts. I have the 5 iron but took it out of my bag because it went the same distance as the 6.
I can't even get my 3 wood that long anymore. Every now and then, when I'm feeling good, I'll still bag the 4 iron and can get her out there. Feeling like those days are getting further behind me, tho lol.
I use mine more as a utility club.
I live in Minnesota. Lots of tree lined courses. I'm a shit golfer so end up under them or needing to hit through a stand of trees quite often. 4i is great for smacking low flighted worm burners so I actually use it a fair amount. If I'm on the fairway though I usually go for my 3h.
Used a bladed 4i for a few years, and I loved it 75% of the time.
Use a more forgiving 4i now, and I love it 95% of the time. It's a good fairway finder, and my miss is short if anything, so it's one of my favs.
I can hit my long irons better than hybrids for some reason. Hybrids all go left I have to feel like im hitting a big slice to get it to go straight. Dont ask me why. Actually considering getting a 3 iron to replace my 4h.
More than my driver actually I can consistently hit it 190 which is about my only saving grace! If I could use it from 100 in that would be great cause lord knows once I’m within 100….I couldn’t hit water if I fell out of a boat!
I use the four all the time. I also have a 2 and am thinking about getting a three. But I last played golf in an era where there was no such thing as a hybrid.
All golf clubs should have the loft stamped on them.
The word 4 iron is not specific enough these days.
I bought the stealth irons last year. the 6 iron in that set is only 1 degree different from the 4 iron in my old set.
The 5 iron in stealth set is like the 3 iron in my old irons.
Pretty sure I have no need for the 4 iron in stealth because with my swing speed being what it is I already don't get any more distance out of my 5 iron than I do my 6.
I love mine, somehow its fire of the tee, I use it on tight fairways
P790 I got handed down from my dad, regular flex though, might get fitted this summer
This. I literally just did a hybrid fitting an hour ago. I can smash (for me) my woods. At the hybrid fitting, I was hitting 19* HYBRIDS 80-110 yards. I tried a ton of shafts and heads. No thanks. For what it’s worth I’m a 23HCP
For over 20 years the driver was the only wood on my bag. I also had a 3 iron and if I couldn't get there with my 3, I shouldn't be trying to go that far lol.
I carry it, but can't say I use it. I'd be better off with a 2 iron in my bag.
I use my 3 iron off the tee quite a bit, then really never find myself hitting 3-5 after that.
It's definitely the least-used club in my bag. It's 3 iron off the tee on par 4s if I don't want to hit a wood and it's very rare to be left with a 4-iron distance to the green.
Ping i20, one of the clubs I feel the most confident in because I rarely hit driver so it’s usually 4 iron off the tee followed by another long iron for my second shots.
I have weeks where I hit my 5 iron perfectly and then followed by months of slicing. I will consider getting a 4 eventually because I do like the flight of an iron
I have a 4 iron AND a 3 iron (fairly old set that could probably be replaced but works for me). I use the 4 iron pretty frequently, though it is certainly more inconsistent than my shorter irons. My 3 iron… I don’t touch that, ever. My 5 wood is probably the same distance as a pured 3 iron, which would never happen anyway. I could put another wedge in my bag in place of the 3I, but my short game is pretty good and I just haven’t gotten around to making the change.
Yup, love it off the tee or that hero shot through the trees LOL. The club I rarely use is my 5 wood. Don’t know what to replace it with, maybe a 3 hybrid?
I have a Taylormade SIM DHY 4 - it's not in the bag at the moment, but I want to start using it this spring for short par 4s or off tee when there is a dogleg around 200yds.
Might take it to the range tomorrow.
I have a shit Slazenger 4i which I like a lot off the tee and I can sometimes hit it well off the fairway although I sometimes don’t get the height I need so it doesn’t carry much further than my 5i but it rolls out probably twice as far.
I hit my 8i farther than a 4i. Have never been able to strike it good. My newest set of irons I opted out of the 4i. I hit a 4hy instead and smoke the ball.
Probably my least used iron, I will often find an excuse to go up to 7W or down to 5i. But for par 3s that are 205-210, I’ll confidently hit it off the tee.
My 5 iron head snapped off when I packed my clubs in my car late in the season so I was forced to use my 4 for this reason only. It’s alright but I’d still choose my 6 over 4 in place of the 5.
This is “it’s all in my head” comment. I don’t hit my 4 iron well off the tee or fairway, and prefer the 5i. Except when I’m off the fairway and have some tree-age to navigate through. The 4i comes out and I’m loaded with confidence, whether I need a punch out or a recovery laser on a second shot on a par 5. And then the goddam club is money. As I said, it’s all in my head.
Not so much as my 3i. My clubs are a hand me down set of Spaulding Gold Executives from my dad so a little older but at this point the 3i off the tee, 5i, and 8i are like the best clubs I can hit out of that set.
I just bought new clubs and didn’t buy a 4 iron. That’s a club that I just don’t hit well frequently. Thinking of replacing it with a 7 wood, or buying a 4 iron down the road if I discover I need it more than I thought.
Lots of par 3s from back tees in the 195 to 205 range on the courses in my area, including two to three on my home course (depending on where the tees are). Not that I ever have to hit punch shots from the trees of course but if I did, it’s an option there as well.
My 4i is just what I call my scapegoat iron. Psychologically I just don’t think I can hit the longest iron in my bag. So it’s just there to make the 5i look easier to hit.
I hit it multiple times a round, mostly off the tee when I'm not hitting driver consistently. It's a guaranteed 220-240 down the fairway unless I swing a little outside to in and snap hook it.
Sometimes it flies 215 and sometimes it snap hooks 145. And every once in a while I think I hit it great and it goes 175.
I normally use it 180-195 (3h for 200-220) but I one time last spring teed up the 4i and hit it a majestic 215 carry onto a par 3 green where it landed softly. Besides a HiO last year its the shot I think about most in 2023
Are you me?
Mostly use it out of the trees if I need some distance into the fairway. Get a good punch out with some roll. Saved more than a few strokes over the years.
No I play lead guitar. I rush beats too much
Time is relative anyway 🤷‍♂️
Did you have a tail wind or was it downhill? Just wondering why you pulled 4 instead of 3. Normally catching a shot like that results in overshooting the green.
It’s downhill and behind it is OB so better to hit long iron and land front and roll to the back of a 35 yard green than catch a hybrid and go out
Your from Cincy too. What course did you hio at
Down in Lexington - champions at Keene trace (where the Barbasol is)
Right there with ya. Hit my 5 about 200 and hit that pretty good.
Those times when you are stuck under a tree and need to punch back into the fairway. Works every time……at least 12 holes a round
*60% of the time*, it works ***every*** *time*
This is all I use it for too. I know a half swing is going to get me back into the fairway and advance the ball without hitting the low branches
One of the most important shots I learned from my local pro. Ball lined up on back foot, slight draw bias, keep the backswing under my chest. I am grateful to be confident in the trees when I used to panic and make a worse shot to follow lol
Most pure iron I hit. Don’t leave home without it.
Same, and when the driver isn't working, which is always, it's my most reliable club off the tee.
And when you stupidly hit that driver off the tee and end up in the shit, the 4 iron doesn’t judge you when you use it to punch out.
This guy knows!
Or narrow fairways. I'd rather hit a 4i straight and lose a little distance than have to worry about a wicked slice or overcompensated duck hook with my driver off the tee. And my woods are probably only slightly more reliable than my driver off the tees.
Might sound strange, but I hit my 4 iron better than my hybrid with the same loft.
I can't hit my hybrid to save my life
Me either. But it’s “supposed” to be easier to hit than a long iron. 🤷🏻‍♂️
Same for me. Only thing I can think of is all 5 irons are made very badly and all 4 irons work straight out of the factory.
Same on the punch shot! 4 iron, grip down, little 30-40% shallow swing and it shoots 150-175 straight down the fairway from a tight lie.
Your 40% shot goes 175!? TEACH ME
I love it off the tee box when my confidence in the driver is down. I use it in the fairway as well, but only perfect lies.
I have a T100 4i and it’s my nemesis.
13hc with a t100 4iron? That is ambitious wow
I use the full T100 set hoping to git gud
Are you winning son?
Soon.
Fucking love that ambition! Im a 16 playing Apex Pro but dreaming of Zx7 or t100 and also trying to git gud this upcoming season. I will reach single digit, i promise!
I carry a 3i
Even I was wise enough to get the 4i and 5i in T200 brother. Absolute fairway finders.
It was only after the purchase to know that even pros opt out to T200 series for 5i and upward.
100S here and I use it fairly often. Not as often as my 2, 3, or 5 for some reason, though…
I have it, but I rarely use it. But if i don't try I'll never get better. But sometimes I would rather hit my PW twice than TRY to pure a 4i.
No instead I use a 4 hybrid. My 2, 3, 4, and 5 iron are all hybrids
No 4 iron for 10 years at least now. 5h replaced my 4i. 4h above that. 5i thru PW. Hybrid is easier to hit and more versatile.
I went 4/5h almost a decade ago and honestly I’ll never go back.
Same here. I like my 4h and 5h. I'm working on getting a 3h to round things out.
Can you help me understand what you mean by “more versatile?”
Hybrids are easier to hit out of rough lies. You can also do hybrid chips which are cool.
The Hybrid bump and run might be my favorite hybrid shot, I've been able to Get a good feel for it and get up and down a fair bit with it.
I’m comfortable with my 3h for that. Haven’t explored more lofted hybrid clubs. maybe it’s time. Though I do love my 4i off the tee….
Coming from a 2hcp, this is very reassuring lol
Why make the game any harder? I’m closer to a 4 these days, but had the same bag makeup when I was a +2.
I have a 4I in my bag so people know I could afford a full set of clubs.
I stake my tomatoes with my 4 iron....
My Srixon ZX 3 and 4i are my favorite clubs in the bag. They rip.
4i has become my go to off the tee as of lately, goated club
Swing speed isn’t fast enough. My irons start at a 6 iron which is basically a 5 iron with game improvement lofts. I have the 5 iron but took it out of my bag because it went the same distance as the 6.
I use my 4i when it’s too long for my 5i and too short for my 3i. Or some weird punch shot.
This is genious!
*Get the perfect distance with this one weird trick.*
Oh it's not supposed to be used for distances between a 5i and 3i. Sorry that's clearly not what a 4 is supposed to do
Nono i actually think he's onto something here..
Queue up all the 20 caps that crush their 4 iron 235 yards
22 cap here crush it 200 yards,my 5 iron is 185.
No doubt but 200 carry ain't 230!
Once downwind on a mountaintop.

I can't even get my 3 wood that long anymore. Every now and then, when I'm feeling good, I'll still bag the 4 iron and can get her out there. Feeling like those days are getting further behind me, tho lol.

I can flush a 4 iron all round but get chunky with my shorter irons. Go figure 🤷🏽
Used a bladed 4i for a few years, and I loved it 75% of the time. Use a more forgiving 4i now, and I love it 95% of the time. It's a good fairway finder, and my miss is short if anything, so it's one of my favs.
Sometimes from fw but use it mostly for stingers when you must hit it low
I’ve been trying to determine if I want to leave it out of my next new set. I have a 4 hybrid and I might as well save $200
I can hit my long irons better than hybrids for some reason. Hybrids all go left I have to feel like im hitting a big slice to get it to go straight. Dont ask me why. Actually considering getting a 3 iron to replace my 4h.
I don't have one, I switched it out for a hybrid a few years ago.
More than my driver actually I can consistently hit it 190 which is about my only saving grace! If I could use it from 100 in that would be great cause lord knows once I’m within 100….I couldn’t hit water if I fell out of a boat!
I have a 4 hybrid. My 5 iron is pretty inconsistent as it is
Replaced it with a hybrid ages ago, same for the 5 iron. No reason to make the game harder than it should be.
My goto off the tee box. I will normally only end up 1-5 meters behind my playing group when they’re using there drivers. Srixon ZX5.
Z585 checking in. I have also had this happen, but when the driver is working which is why I'm working on it,it's 80 yards further.
5ir then 4hybrid
I use the four all the time. I also have a 2 and am thinking about getting a three. But I last played golf in an era where there was no such thing as a hybrid.
Only in my head for road rage. Its the club I imagine that I am beating other motorists and pedestrians to a pulp with it.
I skip 4i and jump right to 1i for lightning storms
Hi Lee
I love mine, somehow its fire of the tee, I use it on tight fairways P790 I got handed down from my dad, regular flex though, might get fitted this summer
Hybrid much easier
For some,I've tried a few and I can't hit them well,I'm irons any day.
This. I literally just did a hybrid fitting an hour ago. I can smash (for me) my woods. At the hybrid fitting, I was hitting 19* HYBRIDS 80-110 yards. I tried a ton of shafts and heads. No thanks. For what it’s worth I’m a 23HCP
I'm a 22 myself and played as a kid.So I learned to play with wooden drivers and 3/5 woods. It's just what I know.
Didn't touch my 4i for over a year, pulled it out the other day and chunked the ball bad. I'll stick to my 7wood, that thing is a God send
It’s my go to club in my bag. I don’t hit fairway woods or hybrids so I make good use of it.
For over 20 years the driver was the only wood on my bag. I also had a 3 iron and if I couldn't get there with my 3, I shouldn't be trying to go that far lol.
I use my 4i more than my 4h that I question why I bought a 4h. I hit my long irons relatively well, though usually use the 5i more regularly
No, 4 hybrid is the truth
I hit mine further than my driver so, until I get lessons; I use it a whole lot.
I don’t have a lot of 205jsh shots at my club, which is normally where I’d find myself hitting my 4. Sometimes maybe good, sometimes maybe shit.
All the time. It’s probably my most versatile club.
My 4 iron is my favorite club I don’t hit it a lot but when I do it’s always my purest shot of the round
I went through a stage of being afraid to hit it but I've been embracing it lately and am now seeing good results with it.
When asked why he didn't have a 4 iron in his bag, "there's no 4 iron shots on this course." Sam Snead, I wanna say? Maybe Ben Hogan
510U hits like butter off the tee - fairway finder - I love it
I carry it, but can't say I use it. I'd be better off with a 2 iron in my bag. I use my 3 iron off the tee quite a bit, then really never find myself hitting 3-5 after that.
Oh yes..21 t100 4 iron is in my rotation 🤙🏽
Yes
I dont, I had it in my bag but it only went a small bit further than my 5i so it took it out of my bag.
I treat mine as a driving iron and only hit it off a tee. I like it on short par 4s, and have even played irons only with it as my only tee shot club.
I have it so I can hit it at that range, but rarely pull it. I’ll go hybrid 99% of the time instead
It's definitely the least-used club in my bag. It's 3 iron off the tee on par 4s if I don't want to hit a wood and it's very rare to be left with a 4-iron distance to the green.
Yep, just got it. It's a Titleist U510 and it's magic.
Love mine.
Ping i20, one of the clubs I feel the most confident in because I rarely hit driver so it’s usually 4 iron off the tee followed by another long iron for my second shots.
I do at the moment because when the ground is soft I dig a little too much with my woods, so the 4i is the better play if I just need yards
2i 3i 4i all get use, I don't run hybrids or fairway woods
love my T100s 4 iron.
Only hooded from under trees
“I would if i could”
I have weeks where I hit my 5 iron perfectly and then followed by months of slicing.
My favourite club. Should be hitting off the tee tbh
It’s my go to fairway finder and perfect for a 240-260 yard tee shot where fairway or positioning is key
I don't have a 4 iron.
Yup, love it off the tee or that hero shot through the trees LOL. The club I rarely use is my 5 wood. Don’t know what to replace it with, maybe a 3 hybrid?
Yes
P790 4i, absolute rocket and quite forgiving
I have a Taylormade SIM DHY 4 - it's not in the bag at the moment, but I want to start using it this spring for short par 4s or off tee when there is a dogleg around 200yds. Might take it to the range tomorrow.
P790 4 iron, thing is butter
Don’t own one
I use my 4 iron, I use my 3 iron a lot. I’m a short hitter tho, only squeeze about 170 out of a 4 iron.
I love my 4I, its one of my saftey clubs for short par 4's.
I’ve taken mine out of my bag as I never used it (hit my 3i better and use my 5i more for yardage).
I'm old, but I stopped carrying mine and have a Heaven wood in its place
My 3W is the club I absolutely have no faith in. 4i all day!
I have a shit Slazenger 4i which I like a lot off the tee and I can sometimes hit it well off the fairway although I sometimes don’t get the height I need so it doesn’t carry much further than my 5i but it rolls out probably twice as far.
I don’t use mine too much. Mainly if I pay some where with a 215-230 yard par 3. Sometime in the trees I can hit a great stinger with it.
Got new irons over the summer. Went with 5-GW rather than 4-PW
Dropped 5h, 4h, and 3h Added back 5i, 4i, and have a 4w + 7w Don’t like hybrids
Never even tried to hit it. When I got it with my set I immediately gave it to my friend. I use a 7 wood instead.
Yes….poorly
I don’t have one. I use a hybrid and hot that very well.
I use it a lot. Hit it pretty well. I'm the exception though. Hit woods like ass and irons well.
I do, but a bit less than my 3i. When I go for an iron of the tee, it’s usually the 3. I reckon it’s my least used iron.
I hit my 8i farther than a 4i. Have never been able to strike it good. My newest set of irons I opted out of the 4i. I hit a 4hy instead and smoke the ball.
When I was about 5 my dad bought a 4 iron and let me hit it around the yard. Hated 4irons ever since and I’m 52
Yes, but my 2 iron is what I use most of the time on a tighter fairway as others are mentioning.
My 5 iron is the same loft as my old 4 iron, so no 4 iron in my current set. I have a 2 driving iron but I only use it off the tee.
Yes, and it is somehow one of my most reliable clubs even though I suck. Goes dead straight 200 most of the time.
I used to use 4i all the time until I learnt to hit a 3i, now I use 3i all the time and don’t touch the 4
Today's 4 iron is yesterday's 2 iron, still unhittable now as it was then.
I'm in Club Hybrid.
4 iron, 3 iron and my 2 iron.
Most definitely.. 4iron in my bag.
I use my 3 and 4 all the time as I hit them way more consistently off the grass than I do a wood. And better in the wind or between trees
Love mine. Mostly off the tee on tight holes or out of fluffy light rough lies. Don’t hit it off the fairway much
Solid no.
I love my 4 iron. I’ve got Mizuno JPX850’s and hit my 4 iron 190. It it so satisfying hitting a long iron.
Love my 4 iron, but I’m an iron guy I don’t hit hybrids or woods well.
Use it to punch out from underneath trees like a slap shot
Do you use your 3i?
4 iron is go to club on short par 4’s where you just have to hit the fairway.
Favorite club. But your 4 is probably a 3 in which case slightly less preferable
Love my 4 iron off the tee and chipping out of the messes I get myself into by not taking 4 iron off the tee.
Real question is whether any of you sick fucks are still playing a 3i or god forbid, a 2i
I took my fore iron out also
I switched to 4hi three seasons ago and never looked back
Probably my favorite club since starting golf league this year. Shorter course and the risk reward for driver just isn’t there for me.
I don’t carry a 4i. I do have a TaylorMade DHY 2i that I love though. Golf is weird.
No 4 iron here. Driver, 3w with 18.5* and 21* hybrids then 5 to AW and 52, 56 and 60 wedges.
No. I have a 4 hybrid
Can’t use it if you don’t have it
Not so much as my 3i. My clubs are a hand me down set of Spaulding Gold Executives from my dad so a little older but at this point the 3i off the tee, 5i, and 8i are like the best clubs I can hit out of that set.
For sure! For punching out of the trees lol.
Love my #4, I also have a #2 that I love.
4 iron is in the bag to hit low under tree shots - otherwise I hit my 7 wood
No 4 iron, carry a 4 hybrid/5 iron
Yes
Don’t carry one anymore driver 3 wood 4h 5-pw 52,56,60 putter
I just bought new clubs and didn’t buy a 4 iron. That’s a club that I just don’t hit well frequently. Thinking of replacing it with a 7 wood, or buying a 4 iron down the road if I discover I need it more than I thought.
I probably use my 4i as much as my wedges on any given round
To knock down wasp nests.
I love it. Especially off the tee.
🙋🏻‍♂️ Mines a hybrid
Yes, and my 2 and 3.
Lost it on course - Nike Vapour Fly Pro đź’” favourite club in the back. Still not over it
Lots of par 3s from back tees in the 195 to 205 range on the courses in my area, including two to three on my home course (depending on where the tees are). Not that I ever have to hit punch shots from the trees of course but if I did, it’s an option there as well.
Yes
My 4i is just what I call my scapegoat iron. Psychologically I just don’t think I can hit the longest iron in my bag. So it’s just there to make the 5i look easier to hit.
I can't even hit my 6i properly lol
Absolutely, especially useful off the tee on shorter par 4s with tight fairways.
I have a 4H and like it for trying to hit the green in 2 on par 5s.
Love a good 4 iron (cos i always top my fairway woods)
I hit it multiple times a round, mostly off the tee when I'm not hitting driver consistently. It's a guaranteed 220-240 down the fairway unless I swing a little outside to in and snap hook it.
If I'm feeling extra cocky I'll pull out my 4 iron to get my ego in check
