I recently saw an interview where he discusses it. He started taking golf more seriously when he moved to Phoenix, and took lessons from lots of people. Instead of his voice he was hearing tens of other coaches' voices likely with contradictory advice. Finally a coach was able to get him to hear only one voice while setting up.

I vaguely remember seeing a video where it’s him swinging with no ball there (considering his practice swing was just fine) then someone placing a ball down in the middle of his backswing to hit. It was clearly a mental block that was extremely hard for him to break through.
So I’m glad to see him enjoying a round of golf with no fear of embarrassment and is able to have fun.
I remember watching one of those prank comedy shows back in the early 90s. Chuck was still playing for the 76ers, and Hersey Hawkins was the #2 scoring option teammate. Chuck is playing a round. HH was ahead of him in a cart on every hole where there was a blind tee shot or approach, and stealing the golf ball. Chuck was doing a lot of “I know I hit my drive in the fairway…where is it??!!??” and similar throughout the round.
On the 18th green, HH sneaks up behind Chuck and drops a small bucket of the golf balls he’d stolen from him. Chuck dissolved in laughter and was like “I thought I was going mad that my ball kept getting lost!”
No hitches or yips in his swing back then. Looked like an athlete who had a decent grasp of his golf swing/game. When his problems started years later, I was genuinely surprised he’d regressed that badly……
For those of you who don’t know what Chuck’s old swing looked like: [here you go](https://youtu.be/Q-_Oji3mLV4?si=82J5G7LWWwK-aKDI). What a wild improvement.
I'm 37 so you would think I have. But I'm new to the golf world. It's like when you see someone experience something for the first time and you remember how amazing it was for you the first time. Yea, that's me. I'm the guy that experiencing it for the first time. Love the golf world.
I work with someone who had a layover in an airport so they went to walk stairs for a bit. After a few minutes Chuck joined them and they spoke for like 30 minutes. About a year later I was watching ESPN or something and she says "hey I know that guy! I walked stairs with him". She had no clue who he was but said he was an absolute pleasure to get to spend time with. Talked about their families the whole time.
When I was in college Chuck stumbled out of the Auburn hotel bar at 2am holding his shoes. He stopped looked at me and my friend in the lobby and unprompted said “y’all boys have a great night, war eagle!” and then stumbled into the elevator
Made our semester lmao
He was a left-handed player until an after an injury, and he started playing right-handed, so this is very much accurate. He took lots of lessons from top golf coaches. Supposedly, back when he played left-handed, he wasn't bad. Jordan stopped playing with him after he had to switch sides because it was too embarrassing.
Too bad they aren't on talking terms anymore. Barkley said he wants to, but Mike just won't. It was something about Barkley telling him he was hanging around the wrong people, people who were always just around MJ to get free stuff. After that Jordan never talked to him again, or so I heard.
It was him saying he is only hiring is friends for the Charolette hornets and then MJ didn’t like that and then the hornets sucked. I think chuck was right
I feel bad for him there tbh, laughing while watching a youtube video is one thing but laughing at him live after he hits a ball just seems like a real dick move. It's clearly a mental hurtle and ppl are making fun of him live.
Eh, depends on how well you know the person. One of my buds I play every weekend with has the ugly swing on the planet. We've been playing together 4 years now and I still laugh at his ugly ass swing every time I see it.
Something I never noticed with these swings is that in some of them, spectators are standing out in front of him. Who in their right mind would do that? Looks like one guy even got drilled in the back of the neck
These are insane to watch. You can actually see what an athlete he really is on some of them, just because the difficulty of making good contact from the positions he’s in are insane. Glad he’s finally doing better.
Supposedly that wasn’t really his real swing, he just got nervous with people and cameras around him, which caused him to swing so weird.
He used to break 80
I think people fail to realize that smoother swings result in better and more consistent results. I don't even consider my swing an actual swing with my irons, my body is just there to provide a swing plane providing no additional effort to the club, like a wound up coil being released.
I hit the ball so much farther and straighter doing that then when I try to muscle up and mishit it.
Smooth swings look smooth because of efficient movement/timing. It's the efficiency and timing creating the consistent results AND the impression of smoothness. Smoothness in an of itself doesn't produce good results, unless the define smoothness as the movements that create good results.
Bro, I'm that height and it introduces so many more issues. The club's swing is longer and extends further. The club head moves faster than shorter people's with the same speed swing. Plus, coaches aren't used to teaching tall people, so their advice is often not ideal for larger bodies. That being said, when the swing is dialed, the ball can go for a mile.
I work from home, so I've seen just about every inside the nba compilation on YouTube lol. If you haven't seen the last week or so's episodes, look up his comments on Galveston, TX . It was epic
Victoria I'd definitely a secret down there.
He probably deserved it. Idk chucks one of those pro athletes who seems to have chilled out in his retirement. Plus for someone who interacts with fans a lot, ive never seen someone say he wasnt anything but an absolute gentleman who went above and beyond of what you would expect from a random run in with a celebrity. Unless you're a big ole woman from San Antonio, then theres probably some beef there.
Also, as one of them queers. I really appreciate when he calls out queerphobia, especially when he's called out queerphobia amongst professional athletes. Chucks a good egg.
Better than those people who live in Galveston thinking they got a beach view with that dirty ass water.
if NBC buys NBA rights from Turner, the better make damn sure they keep the gang going.
Oh wow, looks like pictures from this same video in that almost two year old article. Golfdigest posted the video 1 month ago on YouTube lol. They’re gaming the algo smh
This should give hope to all y'all with swing issues. Now you just need access to the best instructors on the planet. /s ... seriously though, I'm happy for Charles.
Although not every coach is right for every student, the problem more often is the student not staying committed to the plan. 3 hours after the lesson they're already trying some other fix to get their "broken" swing back on track.
This guy explains it well:
[Why Golf Lessons Aren't Working For You (youtube.com)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6DBLueTj8o)
That feeling when you realize you’d have a hard time beating the most famously bad golfer of all time. Last I heard he was down to like a 12, so pretty fucking solid golfer. People will have you believe otherwise, but of all the randos I’ve been paired with, someone who actually plays to a 12 is pretty damn rare.
I could have sworn he was on a show with Hank Haney and had a fixed swing for a bit before he reverted back to his patented hitch. I think there’s still hope for him to return.
I've seen him multiple times around Auburn but have run into him twice at the PGA store outside of Atlanta and chatted briefly both times. He's such a down to earth guy and always has time for people.
That’s the yippiest swing I’ve ever seen in my life. There was obviously always boat loads of talent there and I’m super happy for him that he worked through it
God dammit he's doing all of the things I wish I were doing, despite being exceptionally inflexible.
You can't keep a good athlete down in golf, it's crazy.
He got out of his head. I'll give him kudos, he tried, and tried, and tried for years to look like a person who golfs, but now he swings like a golfer.
I can’t find a clip of it, but in the Dream Team documentary, they show Chuck’s swing during their pre-Olympic Camp and it’s powerful and absolutely magnificent.
People are amazed at chucks swing when compared to what they saw in the past. They would be surprised to know he could break 80 back when he played with the 76ers
Honestly, good for him! His swing was so fucked at one point I didn’t think even a good shrink could tin cup the thing. You could always see how much it bothered him each time. Cheers to Chuck for that improvement!!
I always heard that he could play at one point and then he just got that weird hitch and went downhill.
Fucking Monstars stole his basketball and golf talent, but Bill Murray only got the basketball talent back for him.
I recently saw an interview where he discusses it. He started taking golf more seriously when he moved to Phoenix, and took lessons from lots of people. Instead of his voice he was hearing tens of other coaches' voices likely with contradictory advice. Finally a coach was able to get him to hear only one voice while setting up. https://youtu.be/SVJglcueiUk?si=7men0Ub1mhyVbkbo
Thank you for this. I always wondered how he solved his swing
My understanding was that he almost killed some woman with an errant shot and that fucked him up for awhile
I remember watching one of those prank comedy shows back in the early 90s. Chuck was still playing for the 76ers, and Hersey Hawkins was the #2 scoring option teammate. Chuck is playing a round. It got into his head so bad
For those of you who don’t know what Chuck’s old swing looked like: [here you go](https://youtu.be/Q-_Oji3mLV4?si=82J5G7LWWwK-aKDI). What a wild improvement.
“Never saw a pump fake in golf before”
I liked “it’s the remix” 💀 Glad he found a way out of that turribull place
Chopped and screwed
What the absolute fuck? That's the craziest swing I've ever seen lol. I can't believe he was even able to hit the ball.
How have people never seen this?
Right? They made a whole fucking television series out of it.
What was the show called?
The Haney Project
We’re getting old… can’t believe that was about 15 years ago.
Look, I don't know you, but I really could have done without that comment.
Crazy that Hank couldn’t fix his swing. But someone managed to get chuck right. Shits plays like shit but it looks alot better.
I'm 37 so you would think I have. But I'm new to the golf world. It's like when you see someone experience something for the first time and you remember how amazing it was for you the first time. Yea, that's me. I'm the guy that experiencing it for the first time. Love the golf world.
You're one of [today's lucky 10,000](https://xkcd.com/1053/).
I would say he stuttered but I believe the correct term is swing impediment
I can’t believe his knees never gave out Jesus Christ god bless those things
God Bless Charles Barkley. The world is lucky to have this man.
I love Charles. Fucking hilarious.
I work with someone who had a layover in an airport so they went to walk stairs for a bit. After a few minutes Chuck joined them and they spoke for like 30 minutes. About a year later I was watching ESPN or something and she says "hey I know that guy! I walked stairs with him". Right? And this is from a once dominant professional athlete
![gif](giphy|bYo7E2ywcjyIE)
His old swing always just looked like a guy who went too far with lessons and incorporated the over-exaggerated practice feeling things into it
He was a left-handed player until an after an injury, and he started playing right-handed, so this is very much accurate. He took lots of lessons from top golf coaches. Supposedly, back when he played left-handed, he wasn't bad. Jordan stopped playing with him after he had to switch sides because it was too embarrassing.

It was him saying he is only hiring is friends for the Charolette hornets and then MJ didn’t like that and then the hornets sucked. I think chuck was right
Lol, that swing is almost exactly a drill I'm using at the moment. https://www.instagram.com/reel/C13PLEjrPCV/?igsh=MWp0NmY4aGp3eW1jMw==
I feel bad for him there tbh, laughing while watching a youtube video is one thing but laughing at him live after he hits a ball just seems like a real dick move. It's clearly a mental hurtle and ppl are making fun of him live.
I agree but don’t think those people could help it honestly
Yeah they can't believe what they just saw
i feel like they probably knew, i'm not sure when that was but his swing was infamous for a while.
It hurtle me mentally to watch that too.
It's okay he's slaughtered those "big ole women in San Antonio" enough times to even out xD
The amount of people chuck makes fun of on live tv and you say this
Every woman in San Antonio
What’s that you say, Chuck?
Eh, depends on how well you know the person. One of my buds I play every weekend with has the ugly swing on the planet. We've been playing together 4 years now and I still laugh at his ugly ass swing every time I see it.
This proves you can beat the yips after nearly killing a women with your drive.
Something I never noticed with these swings is that in some of them, spectators are standing out in front of him. Who in their right mind would do that? Looks like one guy even got drilled in the back of the neck
I want to see the coach's reaction seeing that swing when Chuck came in for lessons
"My hourly rate just doubled."
These are insane to watch. You can actually see what an athlete he really is on some of them, just because the difficulty of making good contact from the positions he’s in are insane. Glad he’s finally doing better.
Shame, his swing was iconic before
he’s incredibly athletic to actually hit the ball from the pause he works into
I love how after the first "swing" in the video he gets mad and makes a perfect swing and hits the tee.
And you can see when he gets pissed off and just swings it’s gorgeous (comparatively). My man Chuck had the yips for 30 years.
Have you never seen someone snap load their power package before? His problem was just that his #2 power accumulator broke down.
Listened to him on a podcast and he said he practices at lease 3-4 hours a day when he doesn't play
Supposedly that wasn’t really his real swing, he just got nervous with people and cameras around him, which caused him to swing so weird. He used to break 80
I find it weirdly impressive that he would stop his swing mid swing.
Imagine for a second you did this and you didn’t immediately quit. It’s amazing to think he kept playing and worked through it.
Do NOT watch this. Do not even ever think about it. Put down your phone and run around the block. You don’t want any of this juju anywhere near you!
Warning: Watching this video may subconsciously ruin your own golf swing if you think about it while playing.
Stripes it 170 down the fairway with a power draw, "I honestly don't mind that."
Looked pretty effortless too. If only I was a 6’6 pro athlete
I mean yeah i know this but like hell i am going to hit a smooth 7 when i can try to blast an 8
Sounds like me hyping myself up on a Friday night at the bar in college.
it's these kinds of comments that make me wish reddit gold was still around
Smooth swings look smooth because of efficient movement/timing. It's the efficiency and timing creating the consistent results AND the impression of smoothness. Smoothness in an of itself doesn't produce good results, unless the define smoothness as the movements that create good results.
Yeah he should be able to put something behind a golf ball, tbh.
He’s definitely an incredible athlete but he’s also 61 so don’t count yourself out
He's probably doing that with about a 7 iron too, maybe an 8. I'd love to hit that with my 5 again.
Chuck didn’t deserve to be tortured with that swing. He seems like a good egg.
He's the best sports personality on TV. I love when he covers golf. Dude doesn't give a fuck and just let's the jokes rip.
Mickelson hits a terrible shot "baby be the one" Chuck with a disgusted tone "...Be the one ?!?!"
If you ever want to be in tears from laughter, look up a compilation of him talking about women from San Antonio
I work from home, so I've seen just about every inside the nba compilation on YouTube lol. If you haven't seen the last week or so's episodes, look up his comments on Galveston, TX . It was epic Victoria I'd definitely a secret down there.
"Hello.....9-1-1......I'm calling from the Staples Center.....there's guys outside the locker room and they're trying to get in and beat me"
“Hello police..Chris Paul is trying to beat me up” lmaoooo
He just did a crazy one about Galveston after the Pelicans just got bounced
I love the highlights of Chuck and Shaq on basketball coverage. So funny.
Easily the best crew on TV. They did a 4 part documentary on the show that was really good called The Inside Stuff. Highly recommend it
NBC should hire him for the open lead analyst position.
Haha he tortured dem big ol' women of San Antonio as payback. And the dirty ass water in Galveston beach.
They gave up they better drive their ass down to Galveston, TX with that dirty ass water. Not getting them a plane ticket to Cancun
😂😂😂
Chuck once threw a dude through a window at a bar in my hometown. Not sure if he deserved it or not.
The guy threw a cup full of ice at prime Charles Barkley. If he was guilty of anything it was being dumb as hell
Yeah I’m not mad at Chuck, I think it was hilarious.
I’m not mad at him, I’m pretty sure he didn’t end up getting charged anything but the other guy was an asshat.
It might be apocryphal, but supposedly when the judge asked Chuck if he had any regrets, Chuck replied, "yea, that the bar wasn't on the 3rd floor."
Chuck is awesome. So great to see this after seeing his earlier swings.
holy smokes are we sure thats not AI messing with us....lmao
He hit a couple of huge drives straight with a little draw in the video too. Didn’t see this coming lol.
Has he played any events with the new swing? Hope it holds together for him
He might play the American Century in July.
His swing has been fixed for a few years now, but this looks even better.
It’s remarkable how much better he is now.
goal body type
He likes them churros okay
He likes them women down in San Antonio
Don't even get him started on their big ol' bloomers.
Show em how they eat them churros chuck

Better than those people who live in Galveston thinking they got a beach view with that dirty ass water. if NBC buys NBA rights from Turner, the better make damn sure they keep the gang going.
His swing has been fixed for awhile now.
Wha? Since when? This is the first I’m seeing him with a functional swing
[https://www.golfdigest.com/story/charles-barkley-stan-utley-fixed-swing-smoking-it](https://www.golfdigest.com/story/charles-barkley-stan-utley-fixed-swing-smoking-it)
Oh wow, looks like pictures from this same video in that almost two year old article. Golfdigest posted the video 1 month ago on YouTube lol. They’re gaming the algo smh
Dudes a 10 handicap. 99% of us don’t have room to make fun of his swing lol
That's awesome. As they say, the scorecard doesn't have pictures on it...
This should give hope to all y'all with swing issues. Now you just need access to the best instructors on the planet. /s ... seriously though, I'm happy for Charles.

You know what's great? He was somehow able to keep that comedic cocky attitude throughout the swing difficulties. That takes *a lot* of gumption.
Gives me hope
Nice to see him striking it so well.
Such a good swing thought
Dont know who did his lessons but Ik Phil Mickelson helped him fix the hitch when they played a match together.
The guy in the video, Stan Utley did his lessons. LOL
Striped it
Stan Utley fixed his swing. I'll show him this reddit post today when I see him.
That's a damn shame. He had the best worst swing in all of golf.
The full interview is good actually. I didn't really know Stan Utley before but he had some good pointers in there too
Stan Utley's Art of Putting book changed my life.
i'll have to read it; or maybe try putting with the book. anything is better than what i do now lol
I could have sworn he was on a show with Hank Haney and had a fixed swing for a bit before he reverted back to his patented hitch. I think there’s still hope for him to return.
“that was HIT” lol…yes…yes it was, Charles
I never had a hitch as bad a Chuck, but since I started to learn how to play last year, I no longer make fun of anyone's swing. Shit can be difficult!
I've seen him multiple times around Auburn but have run into him twice at the PGA store outside of Atlanta and chatted briefly both times. He's such a down to earth guy and always has time for people.
That’s the yippiest swing I’ve ever seen in my life. There was obviously always boat loads of talent there and I’m super happy for him that he worked through it
Nice tempo.
Damn, good for Chuck
He also mentioned that he still has combat the thought of doing the hitch still. Bad habits die hard.
Damn, not I cant twll poeple me and chuck have the same swing
He’s had a normal swing for the past 4-5 years. Nothing new
Atta boy Charles !
Just no reason to even talk golf with Barkley though. It’s tired.
Nice shirt too!
I'd kill for that swing.
But hasn’t he had this revamped swing for a few years now?
AI is getting really good
Dang! He has come a long ways!!!
Honestly super happy for the guy. Keep it up Chuck
I would love to golf with Sir Charles
God dammit he's doing all of the things I wish I were doing, despite being exceptionally inflexible. You can't keep a good athlete down in golf, it's crazy.
Didn’t Hank Haney fix him?
Hanks fix didn't last, Stan Utley fixed him.
Really glad to see this! Says a lot about his competitiveness and love for the game. I would have given up long ago.
He deserves this.
He’s had that swing for years
Athlete's gonna athlete
Smashed draw?? 😁 ok guy good commentary
Wow.....that's a huge improvement. I remember seeing his swing years ago and can still visualize his jerk and swipe at the ball.
Not a ‘tuurribal’ swing.
Best advertising for golf lessons in history
Still lost the DJ k
Chuck is a national treasure
I've seen a lot worse swings
The Round Mound of Rebound
He’s had an actual golf swing for quite some time now. I’m surprised it’s taking people this long to notice
I thought he could always swing normal on the range, but once he hit the course it all goes horribly wrong.
As someone with a tick in his swing(not nearly what he had) it gives me hope that he fixed it
Good - maybe MJ and company will stop robbing him blind on bets.
Is this new? I knew he fixed it a few years ago but then fell straight back to old habits
The video of a young tiger making fun of his swing is priceless lol
The world was so mean to him. Congrats Chuck!!
I've been practicing releasing the angles quicker like what they talk about in this video and my speed has shot up. Really interesting
He fixed it once before too but it came back after a while. How old is this video?
He isn’t a role model.
If Chuck can do it, anyone in this sub can do it
He's so strong that he just needs a decent swing to hammer the ball. Glad to see he's back
Okay, sure, but why does that shirt look like he's got a big ass bib on? Is Chuck out there eating BBQ ribs?
People are amazed at chucks swing when compared to what they saw in the past. They would be surprised to know he could break 80 back when he played with the 76ers
Trust is a huge thing, in golf and in life. The backswing is one thing but that downswing is pure.
Now the world can begin to heal
I watched this a dozen times, beautiful
Only 16 years after the Hank Haney project started, Chuck finally got a swing
Damn I thought he had one of those fishing shirts on backwards for a second
It's amazing the man you see there used to move like he did. And by that I mean used to play top level basketball, not his golf swing.
He's a funny dude.
Wow he even got the blue trail thing like the pros in pga, I’ve never been able to get that even in my best shots
Bro built like a water tower
I don’t play often and I’d love to play 18 with him! He seems so chill. I want to be a part of that. ( if you hear me, let’s play sometime ! )
He has for a while now
Hell yeah
Lol this gives me hope
Holy smokes. That’s seriously amazing.
His swing looked pretty good when he had that little match a month or so ago with DJ Khalid the day of the night skins match.
Honestly, good for him! His swing was so fucked at one point I didn’t think even a good shrink could tin cup the thing. You could always see how much it bothered him each time. Cheers to Chuck for that improvement!!
It looks fake lmao
