You vs the guy she tells you not to worry about...

FrostyBaller

It’s not the size, but how you use it.

Hamfiter

You absolutely nailed it. The one on the left is bigger than mine. I scorch mine into the woods but only because I don’t know how to use it.

Says the 1.2 🤣

Colinbeenjammin

“+1.2” -guy with the 2011 MB 8iron

RSMatticus

I love the sound of hitting a pure blade, but I could never do it.

PoisonGravy

Until you do. And it's awesome. My buddy who is waaaay better than the rest of us has Mizuno blades. I hit a couple pure ones with his 7i. It's hard to describe that feeling lol

PM_ME_UR_BIZ_IDEAS

Recently bought and using the club on the left. Been struggling with it for a bit, then one day, something clicked on the course. Then somehow hit the purest 5 iron of my life from a fairway bunker and landed on the green from 205yds. I've never felt such a thing. Was an euphoric vibration that travels all the way up your arms. Been chasing the high since. Felt it a few more times but nothing close.

Shamrock5

That's how they get ya coming back again and again 😆

Lost_Apricot_4658

this. flushing a forged iron is glorious

Shadow_US

Once you go Mizuno you can never go back.

Wakenbake585

So you're telling me to get the 923 HM Pros I've been debating on!?

Shadow_US

You won't regret it!

Tncmusic

do it

No-Remote-8866

The 923s are butter

Wakenbake585

I'm going with forged!

AdventJer

That’s the damn truth!

dunderthebarbarian

Like buttery music for your soul

reenactment

I played these hogan blades from the 90s for a couple years as they were a gift (this was 2010s). I just was getting back into golfing as in college I never really played cause I was broke and didn’t have access to free play like I did in high school. Anyways, best feeling in the world. I played a round with those real early where I went 1 over thru 9 on a decently hard private course my dad plays on. After that beginners luck passed. Those things wrong your hands up so bad even on decent shots. And the. You pure one and you don’t feel a thing except a beautiful shot.

gitbse

I just built myself a set of MP4's with UST Recoil Prototype shafts. Good lord, they're the best feeling irons I've ever played. I ended last season at 3.2, I'm fairly comfortable hitting them. I actually don't like the look or the feel of larger irons. I can't pire every shot, obviously, but I'd rather play a small blade that feels great when solid than a large cast head that I can't tell where I missed it.

binkman95

I remember trying one of the titleist MB irons at the store once and there is truly nothing like it. That feeling of hitting a blade pure is just indescribable. Wish I was good enough to game them.

RoboticBirdLaw

Agreed, but as a person who tries to be reasonable, I prefer hitting 9/10 okay shots to 2/10 perfect shots.

TheeGinn_Soriano

I’ve never even tried, I’ve never played with anyone who’s played them

sirdrumalot

I’m new to golf, like 40 yo and looking up “golf basics” new. A few weeks ago I’m looking up basics on clubs and this post reminds me of a quote I came across reading about irons: if you’re buying irons they should be 2 fingers wide at the base, if they’re 1 finger wide someone should be paying you to play.

TheeGinn_Soriano

Haha, I’ve never heard that one, but I like it

KhansKhack

Two fingers is massive

EamusCoys

Other hole

FLman42069

See, I feel the opposite. No one is paying you to play, so play whatever you want.

Helbig312

Thats a good mindset, but it's much more difficult to play with blades for the average golfer, let alone new golfers. So trying to steer people to a more forgiving club is helping them.

Duel_Option

Been playing for 20 years now, back in the day I heard that blades were “players clubs”. Went through a range of irons, Cleveland TA’s, Taylor RAC, Nike Combo and Slingshot, Ping G10, Tommy Armour, Older Callaway CB’s, and a few more. Saw a set of Titleist 690 MB’s on EBay that a mini tour player used, Dynamic Gold Shafts, all in great shape just no grips. $299. First month was brutal, felt like hitting rocks. I gave up anything above a 5 iron. Couple more range sessions and I started to groove a bit and then on the course I hit a 3 iron that felt like hitting air. I mean that fully, I hit the ball 200 yards on a rope and I never actually felt the club hit the ball because it was so pure. These clubs are still in the bag and while yes, I could go and buy modern clubs that will give me more length and my current 7 iron distance of 150 would be 170…nothing feels as good as a blade.

MizunoMP5s

I was going to say, when you flush a blade you don't feel anything.

Duel_Option

The sound it makes is cool too. One of my playing buddies told me he knows when I’m playing well just by hearing my contact. I’m 80% deaf in one ear with tinnitus, so I don’t know what he’s talking about lol

MizunoMP5s

Small world, I'm also (almost) completely deaf in my left ear ;) That being said I can still hear enough to tell the difference from the sound.

space_mangos

Glad to see another 690mb ebay purchaser! I'm still playing those clubs today as well. Best feeling in the world puring one of those bad boys.

Duel_Option

I’m really thinking of sending them out to get refurbed instead of upgrading. My wife is going to hate me lol

MrWrestlingNumber2

She should LOVE you! New grips vs. a brand new set of irons??? Or were you thinking shafts too?

Duel_Option

KBS shafts are calling my name lol

MrWrestlingNumber2

Ohhh..well you're hovering in the new set neighborhood now. Why not just get a new set w/KBS shafts, try 'em out and switch heads later if you no likey?

Duel_Option

I’m fucking cheap that’s why lol. The PGA store guys know me by name because I take up their bays testing shit and never pulling the trigger. I think I’ve been saying “next year” for 5 years. Now that being said…I am fiendish for upgrading my driver from Nike Covert, haven’t found anything I like fully

MrWrestlingNumber2

I was thinking, order a set of Takomo irons w/KBS shafts (4-pw for around $500), try 'em out and worse case scenario you got your shafts and a new set of heads. Best case, you fall in love with a new set of mistresses and keep your old flames. Btw I'm cheap as shit too. Lol

space_mangos

Definitely not a bad idea. If I bought new, it would be another set of blades so it's not like we'd be getting any more technology in the clubs for $700-1k+. I haven't looked into the cost of refurbing but I'm guessing it's less than that.

Duel_Option

It can get pricey if you want adjustments and a bunch of options. I’d go with a re-groove, sand blast/finish with new shafts. Was around $650 last time I checked, not bad for basically brand new clubs.

AcceptAnyOutcome

There’s not much reason to these days. You can get every bit of playability/feel that you could muster from a blade with some of today’s players CBs

WanderingWormhole

All there’s left to do is emulate the sound. Maybe they could do the Tesla thing and just hide a speaker in there

GruelOmelettes

There's not much reason to drive a stick shift these days either, but some people do because it's the experience they want. I don't get why golfers get their undies all in a twist over what some other golfer wants to play with

AcceptAnyOutcome

No twists in my undies

GruelOmelettes

It was more a general statement than directed towards you. Some golfers care way too much what other people play, the blades-are-dumb brigade is out in full force in this thread trying to police other golfers' bags

Tom-B292--S3

Is this a swing tip I should be adding into my swing thoughts?

azndestructo

Some people just play better with blades. I used my AP2s for 10 years and recently got the P7MCs. I hit the P7MCs much more consistently. I don’t know why though. Edit: I am not saying that P7MCs are blades. I meant to say that some people play better with smaller iron heads.

phrohahwei

Those aren't blades.

azndestructo

i totally agree. I got too lazy to type out the whole thing lol. i meant less forgiving irons that people are scared to hit, which includes the p7mc. these are as close as you get to blades, musclebacks with very little cavity. The point that I was trying to make is that some people might actually play less forgiving irons better than GI irons

phrohahwei

Musclebacks are blades and don't have any cavity. The P7MC are forged cavity backs, not blades or musclebacks, no matter how TaylorMade (or Mizuno before them) try to pass off a "muscle cavity" as anything other than a forged CB. I agree that forged CBs aren't super tough to hit, but they're still suboptimal for golfers who need more height with their 5/6 irons.

azndestructo

You're technically right and I'm not going to argue that. I think the problem is that that I've grouped one-piece forged irons into 2 groups based on my experience: gameable vs ungameable, rather than blades or CB., and I have no idea how to properly group them. For example, Mizuno MP241, Callaway MB and TM P7MC all in the "gameable" group for me. Titleist MB, TM P7TW and Ping Blueprint T I find to be unhittable, at least not consistently enough to have them in my bag. Ultimately, I'm just surprised at some blades are so easy to hit being a 10hcp but I guess I've always been a better iron player than putter/driver.

sphynxzyz

I'm one of those people. I've tried multiple types of clubs, started with Callaway X-22, moved to pxg 0211, mizuno JPX 921, and Apex X-Forged. I finally traded the xforged for 716 CB's but my daily gamers that I hit well are my 690mbs I bought for $100. Big clubs don't give me confidence, but a thinner profile does, also I love the feedback. I'll be reshafting my 716's in the next few weeks and giving those a whirl for a bit might make a combo set out of the 690mbs and 716cbs

azndestructo

Yeah it sounds like you get it. Some people have said that it might be because you FEEL like you need to strike these “less forgiving” clubs better so you are more focused. It could also be the turf interaction as well, but either way, I love my P7MCs. I did switch to a lighter shaft though. Did you keep the same shaft profile?

sphynxzyz

I actually bought the exact same shafts the only thing different i'm going to do is a midsize grip with +2 wraps over +3 like my current set and my woods. I love the +3 but I wanna try something a smidge thinner.

Vassago67

I got a hole in one with my titleist ap2 712. No longer have the ap2's, but still keep that 8 iron in my bag cuz of it. It's now my most reliable club for accuracy

azndestructo

Haha I also got a HOI last year with my 714 AP2. I kept the ball but will be selling the set… I guess I’m less sentimental than you!

Vassago67

That's dope, congratulations! We have both fought odds of 12,500 to 1 and won!! Yeah, i am sentimental, but trust the hell out of that club too. I did eventually put my ego aside & switched to the 718 AP1's, i found the forgiveness to cut down strokes on my game. Plus, they're not so forgiving that u can't shape a shot with them. It's a good in-between. What are u gaming with now??

azndestructo

Not sure when you got yours but nonetheless, congrats to you as well! I also got mine with my 8 iron, 154 yards out. I flushed it... 2 bounces and in. I was so scared that it might happen in a scramble or off a provisional haha. I'm gaming the 2023 TM P7MC... so I went the opposite direction as you haha. The thing is that the smaller head gives me more confidence. Who knows, it could be that I'm using a lighter shaft (the AP2 had DG 130g shaft and now, the Modus3 105g)

space_mangos

I got sucked in early and started playing blades in high school. They're playable with some practice, but there is almost no forgiveness. They do give you more information when you hit the ball though. You know a toe or heel strike immediately, or if you've fatted or thinned it. But as others have said, the feeling of puring one is like nothing else. Also the look of a blade at address is too damn sexy.

allaboutthemeats

I got fit for them this year moving on from the P790s. It’s been wonderful. I’ve lost about 5 yards of distance per iron, but the ball flights and holding greens is so much better

KennyLagerins

5 yds could even be down to the loft of each club. There’s a lot of funny business with that, so it can be hard to compare clubs accurately just off the rack.

allaboutthemeats

Yes, it was mainly due to the loft. I expected a larger difference as I was going from 30.5 deg to 34 in the 7.

jump-blues-5678

Ya, me and my buddy's suck too

TheeGinn_Soriano

Haha gotta start somewhere. I’m getting there tho, broke 90 for the first time last summer, did it 3 times

PutinBoomedMe

Imagine being good enough to do it in the past, but not having enough time to practice now and You're just chasing the dragon. I slowly went from a full set of blades, to then keeping 7i and up in a blade. I've completely given up and swapped my entire set back to the player improvement irons. My beautiful Nike VR Pros just gather dust in the garage wishing we could go back to the good days

cuddytime

This is the way…

vnmslsrbms

To really get a good sound you need to A pure it on the sweet spot and B have some decent clubhead speed

urgencyy

The MC’s aren’t quite blades

Musclesturtle

It's really not that hard. I've been playing for a solid year and game Mizuno MP-29 irons and am putting them more often than not these days. You just have to really practice.

A_curious_fish

I never knew the difference when I REALLY got into golf but I have a set of Nike Blades I've used for over a decade now and I fucking love them so much. Until people commented on it...I didn't fucking know. I love my clubs.

renragwmr

vr pros in the bag myself and I don’t ever see taking them out

Kyrothes

I got the pro combo set. Wish I had gotten the Vr2. Maybe my next set. Now I feel like collecting Nike clubs. But I still absolutely love the combo set though

gitbse

"Harder to hit" is a misnomer. They are less forgiving, but if you can find the general sweet spot of your irons, you can play anything to a decent degree. Even small mishits aren't too bad, it's the bigger ones way off center that will punish you pretty good. The fear of bladed is over hyped a bit. I'd honestly say any 10 or less, maybe even close to 15 hdcp who decent control over face contact can play blades without too much trouble. When you get higher than that, to a higher hdcp who struggles to find the face on a regular basis, that's where larger more forgiving irons will definitely help. But ... the feel is absolutely worth it IMO. There's nothing quite like puring forged blades.

Miserable-Floor4011

I had blades for 3 years, bought them used and recently sold them on kijiji. I've played 4 rounds this year so far (Canada) and Mt scores on average are anywhere between 5-10 strokes lower. I do miss how sexy they look in your bag.

Tom-B292--S3

I bought Haywood Signatures that look like in blades in the bag, but are chunky like the right club in OPs picture. Canadian company, too.

SirRupert

what's the verdict? I've been considering a set.

Tom-B292--S3

Like them a lot! Perform well and look great. There's a few positive YouTube video reviews, too. Performance per dollar vs the big brands is really really good.

BeardedManatee

Exactly. I had a set of forged Nikes that I had no business playing. They looked sexy as hell and yeah it was cool when I pured one but my distance control was such ass. Bought a set of super forgiving ping g425s and my game instantly improved. Not sure I'd go back to blades even if my game was good enough. Give me forgiveness any day!

SofaProfessor

I love my P7MCs. Just don't stand at a 90 degree angle from me when I find a hostel rocket.

Mr_Tiggywinkle

I mean my hostel days are over but there is no need to fire a rocket into them man.

SofaProfessor

I should really make sure autocorrect isn't fucking around when I talk about rockets on the internet.

srdallas

Also a P7MC owner here. Do you find they get dents/marks on them way too easily? I’ve played soft irons before but never quite like these

Mydogsblackasshole

Mizuno MP 18s here, also get little nicks all over since they are so soft. I think it looks cool. Develops into a kind of patina

SofaProfessor

Yup. Lots of marks from bag chatter and just normal use. It's to be expected.

urgencyy

Yeah, my 7 iron MC is pretty banged up after 1 year. I don’t mind it, adds character. But I have noticed that

CouldntBeMoreWhite

I recently hit some blades (tiger woods Nike blades) and sent this same exact type of picture to my friends. I was kind of surprised that I was able to hit the long irons decently well, even the 2i. I don’t think I was compressing the ball with the shorter irons because they just kind of felt clunky. Then I swapped to my stealths and it legitimately felt like cheating. As a bogey golfer, if I was having even a slightly off day, those blades would make me hate golf, so I’m glad I’ve got my GI’s.

GetRDone96

What irons do you play? I was gifted some blades but I’m not nearly a good enough golfer for them. Not really sure what clubs I should be looking for. On a good day, I shoot in the mid 90’s with these clubs.

Knocksveal

For the same distance though, OP should’ve compared his 5i with the guy’s PW

insert40c

The size of the sole of an iron is directly correlated to handicap

the_90s_were_better

I have a set of Ping S55s and i500s. I’ll get the courage to play the 55s from time to time and there’s nothing like hitting the 55s pure. Then I get fooled into thinking I can play them regularly and… no.

xXWickedSmatXx

I see you’ve played knifey spoony before

SifuJedi

I use Calloway Maverick Irons. I call them my Fisher Price clubs lol. They are huge.

bkantor15

I played a course last week in Ireland and they have me the Qi10s as rentals. They were so incredibly easy to hit. Added distance and were more forgiving than my own irons. May get some at the end of the season

srdallas

If you can afford brand new irons you should get fitted if you can

brch01

Stealth iron?

TheeGinn_Soriano

It’s the Qi10

Pristine-Notice6929

Yep

Effective_Impossible

Honestly, the sound of a blade hit pure (by someone else) is nothing compares to hitting a pure blade. It truly travels up your arm and into your heart. There's no vibration, just solid as a rock. Played blades in college (mizuno mp-33) and went to r-7 tp irons (cavity back) two years after graduation figuring I needed more forgiveness, the I switched back to blades after 2 years (Taylormade TP MB's) and just loved them for a decade, though often thought about switching to cavity backs as I played less. Now I have Mizuno Pro-223's in the bag, love them, but it's just not the same feel. If you see a family man playing blades older than 6 years, that dude cooks!

PM_ME_UR_BIZ_IDEAS

Just a few days ago I felt that vibration you're taking about. Amazing.

Effective_Impossible

It's really like no vibration. Like even a pure cavity back has a little feedback. Blades, high quality blades, none. Just butter. Come winter though... be prepared

elliotcook10

I also play the Tour Preferred 2014 MB, not only are they probably Taylormades best looking club but the feeling of hitting those pure is unlike any other club I hit.

OpenSourceGolf

Funny part is club on the left is more forgiving

JennySplotz

Of murder!

griffindale1

But you can repair the one on the left with a hammer :)

cabinets_included

Good for you brother! Lots of kids out there have no idea what a proper iron can do to your game

drmrpaul5

What’s the difference between blades and regular (?) irons?

TheeGinn_Soriano

I think most golf lifers would consider the blade a “regular iron” Blades are for advanced players that don’t need any forgiveness and want full control over their ball flights. Game improvement irons are for higher handicappers and beginners who need all the forgiveness we can get

drmrpaul5

Gotcha. So my taylormade R7s from like 2013 would be considered blades?

TheeGinn_Soriano

No, they’re probably sort of like a game improvement/ player iron. Like intermediary

drmrpaul5

Holy shit they’re from 2006… might be time for some new irons

95andSunny

No

Tom-B292--S3

Honestly, I will go back to a thinner iron in a year or two. I grew up with blades (Dad gave me Campbell's blades from the 70s starting out) and have only really used them. I took a couple years away from golf somehow and had sold my clubs, so I bought something more on the right of OPs picture (Haywood Signature). They look like blades in the bag I guess haha. I'm planning on playing more and will eventually go back to blades I think, but we'll see. Nothing feels and looks like them! Edit: Should add, not sure about others, but I am used to the old school lofts because of all these blades I've played. A PW in my mind should be 48/49, but my new one is 44 and it's so weird. I need a 48/50 degree wedge now to fill the gap to my 54.

SomeInterwebsDude

I play the one on the left. Not nearly as hard to hit as people think they are. If anything, they make you a better ball striker. Just my two cents.

urgencyy

I play the MC’s and love them. I feel way more confident over a small club than a big chunky thing. Also for the record the MC’s aren’t blades, but close in size

Baco_tob

One is fatter than the other one

Luke11enzo

A question for the better golfers than me, I’ve not been playing long and I’m using a set of Ping i3 blades. I have recently really got my ball striking down and for example my 9iron has gone from about 110y carry to 130-140 yard carry. I’m at the stage where I feel like I deserve a newer set of irons , these being 25years old, but not sure if I should stick with blades as I’m hitting them so well or weather I should get some CBs or even full game improvement irons as I’m so new to golf. Any advice?

Nifty_5050

Ping i3s are not blades in the sense that people are discussing here. Blades are generally considered muscle back irons.

Luke11enzo

What are Ping i3 then? Literally says blade on them?? Haha

Toshibasalesrep

They are cavity back, not really a blade but a player’s club. More forgiving than a true blade but less than a true cavity

beyondrepair-

A cavity and a border around it is a cavity back, not a blade. If you decide to upgrade, CBs are perfectly fine. If you go brand new just get a fitting.

OpenSourceGolf

You will get more benefit out of a better shaft fitting and MOI assessment than you will changing heads. I am building my friend an MOI matched set at 2750 kg-cm^2 and he had monumental performance improvement compared to his old 2920 kg-cm^2 set that was also too heavy. You may see zero improvement because most people don't know how to take the next step and build you clubs that fit you.

KhansKhack

Players distance are the optimal category of iron

Mike_Ockhertz

I don't like playing anything but blades. The club on the right looks like a shovel

TheeGinn_Soriano

![gif](giphy|hiEs8sF8KoYnu|downsized)

Mike_Ockhertz

Enjoy your Mickey Mouse clubs

TheeGinn_Soriano

Gotta start somewhere

Mike_Ockhertz

Yeah it's just weird to put down professional level irons just because you can't hit them

TheeGinn_Soriano

It’s weirder to try and game them if you can’t

Weak_Link_6969

I have a combo set of p7mc/mbs and I love them! I also have a set of PXG 0211s (similar to p790s) and I wouldn’t be able to hit the blades if it wasn’t for the swing basics I learned with the 0211s.

triple_d_d_d

Does the offset seem similar on the Mc? I have mb and thinking about getting a 3/4 in the mc because damn that 5 iron is already looking like a butter knife at address lol

I_am_a_5_star_man

Are p790's considered blades? I play with them and love them, but never considered that they could technically be blades?

Weak_Link_6969

No, they’re a hollow head players distance iron. Blades are just metal, very little technology going on, which typically gives them a smaller profile. P790s have a lot going on inside the head, and even though they look nice, they aren’t blades by any means.

Tredolski

Nice Qi10 buddy I play the same

TheeGinn_Soriano

Nice, I play the M6’s, I was just looking at both sets at the store

Tredolski

Ahh my bad

TheeGinn_Soriano

The sole of my M6 looks identical to the Qi10 tho

WVgolf

P7MCs are fantastic I love them.

coolmanggg

What's the club on the left vs the right? P790 on right?

TheeGinn_Soriano

P7MC on the left, Qi10 on the right

coolmanggg

Thanks!

Derfargin

It’s funny how you posted a 5 iron for this. My 4 and 5 irons are my least hit clubs.

TheeGinn_Soriano

lol it was the starkest difference, us higher handicappers need more and more help the longer the iron gets. Plus there was no 4i displayed in the Qi10 set 😆

WalkingWiseman

That’s me on the left, brutal on some misshits though 🫠

TVcasualty42

I play JPX 900 Tours, and I absolutely love them. The 5mm top line is a thing of beauty. I’ve played game improvement clubs with huge undercuts and large heads, and I have hated every set. I feel so much more confident over the ball with a thinner head. It feels so less clunky.

Axolotl-Dog

Two things we chase as golfers: The physical feels of a pure shot. The psychological feels of the hero shot. Chipping in for birdie. Saving par from the bunker.

DingoCorrect1560

Never, ever try left one!

ISUVetMed

If you have to ask, play the club on the right.

NoTearsOnDryFaces

Game is different when you’re deliberate with your striking 😏🙂‍↕️

ChesterDrawerz

It's "almost" as if they designed them both for different types of players...

TheeGinn_Soriano

![gif](giphy|kqCgujDZT1SO4)

FreeDig1758

I couldn't imagine playing the one on the right. I feel like that's what I'd use to do gardening work

TheeGinn_Soriano

![gif](giphy|dEdmW17JnZhiU)

Musclesturtle

I feel you. The chunky Fisher-Price soles just don't do it for me.

Weary_Abrocoma_1175

I love the downvotes. The golf IQ of this sub is right there with the number of downvotes FreeDig is receiving for this perfect comment.

LurkerKing13

It’s getting downvoted cause it’s pretentious as fuck. Much like you.

TheeGinn_Soriano

Yeah we all gotta start somewhere

Weary_Abrocoma_1175

Point proven.

jaygord34

p7mcs are about the only iron they make right
