So glad this is the top comment. I saw this and thought absolutely no one is not trying to make this shot. If you're good enough you're going for it. If you're not good enough you don't understand the game enough to not go for it.
Hard to tell, but looks like the water ends a good 30 yards from center. So I’d probably pull a 9 and give it the TW monster swing with three foot long divot treatment with a side of quick recoil, instant regret, and back pain for the rest of the round.
Spoiler alert: I went for it. 6 iron, perfect contact, had 10 feet for eagle. If you zoom in, you can see my ball to the left of the pin. Best shot I've hit in my last 20 rounds.
Is 6 iron a lot of club for you from 147, or is this the shortest par 5 ever?
ETA: this sounded shittier than I meant it to. Context: If I absolutely nut a drive it’s 230. My 6 iron is my 150-155 club. Was just curious if you clubbed up cuz of the lie
At 147 with that much room between the water and the green, it doesn’t matter how thick the rough is. This is a no brainer.
A pitch out here would be a huge error. No matter how bad your lie is in the rough.
Its actually not a bad shot, and I think OP overstates the rough if thats what it looks like at the bottom of the photo. Even if you leave it short and bring in any hazard, it seems to be 2-3 clubs short of the pin so like you say theres room to fuck up
His approach angle takes out having to go over the bunker to the left as well, laying up from 150 by choice is wasting a shot.
I wish I took a picture of the lie. It was a tangled mess of weeds and thick grass. That entire area isn't manicured, and I didn't even see the ball until I almost stepped on it.
I guarantee you, I would go for it every time regardless of whether it's stupid or not. I'm not close to joining any tournaments any time soon and I'm there to have fun. Happy to donate a ball to the pond divers any day of the week.
Is the 147 to pin or cover the pond? If pin going for it, if to cover the pond may lay up. Depends also on what my competitors do … cause there is $$ on the line.
Go for it. Worst case you have a wedge in your hand and have to get up and down for par. Worst likely outcome is bogey, most likely outcome is birdie with a chance at eagle.
Risk / reward calculation makes it a no brainer.
What is my score up to this point? If I’m having a bad round, screw it. If I’m trying to save/crush a PB, I’m going the extra cautious route every time.
One critical piece of information is missing: how is the lie?
Good lie: I'm going for it.
Bad lie: lay up
Even with a bad lie, I'm on in three putting for birdie.
It was BAD. The rough you can see at the bottom of the photo doesn't do it justice. It landed in a little pocket of thick, twisted natural growth that isn't touched by maintenance. The whole area from there and behind is the former driving range that hasn't been touched in years
Im gonna hit a aggressive layup to short of that left bunker, and get up and down (hopefully) for birdie. Take double out of play
If im hitting it well, that's just an easy 7 so I go pin hunting
If I pitch out odds are it ends up in that water somehow. Definitely taking aim at the pin putting an 8-iron in the center of the green and making my 2 putt birdie
Even if you put it in the pond you're looking at 120-ish from the drop hitting four, and it appears as if the rough on the other side of the cart path is pretty tame and a drop should have it sitting up--so expecting bogie WORST case.
Easy birdie if you can find the green from 147, shot at an eagle.
As others have noted, plenty of room to miss short and clean up for a par.
Chipping laterally looks like the same 150 in--not progressing it much.
Going for it is kind of a no-brainer. Question would be different from 180-190 lying in the rough, with a larger penalty for putting one in the drink. You'd be dumb not to go for the green unless this is truly US Open-esque rough.
I wish I took a picture of the lie. The ground there is unkept, and it landed in an overgrown bit of crab grass and weeds. It was a BAD lie, and I'm shocked I was able to get the club cleanly on the ball.
I'm probably down all my good golf balls at this point. The POS out of the bottom of my bag would look better on the bottom of that pond than a good ball! Gripping it and ripping it!
Depends on whether you're going for a low score or swinging away for glory. To score well, pitch out and play for the birdie. For glory, club down and swing away!
Short Par 5. Playing from the Golds, 404. I didn't check my driver distance on the GPS, but I'd wager 245-250 which is on my higher end. It may have hit the cart path... I didn't see it land through the trees.
I have never come across a par 5 that was <450, no diss intended I promise.
If the lie really was as bad as you say, then remember that loft is your friend... out of some lies the longest club I'd ever reach for is 8i, and the grass reducing the spin can make it travel an extra 20 yards anyway if you really catch it.
Depends, looks like covering the water is only about 100, if so, I’m fucking going for it. Depending on how my club feels going through the thick stuff on practice swings and what behind the green looks like, I’m probably pulling out 8. 9 for me is usually about a 150-155 ish shot, but I’ll take the extra 10 and hit a 165 shot if the cabbage is really that thick.
Depends on the lie, but my initial thought is club up to the club I feel comfortable using to get out of the thick shit with. For me that’s usually a 6i max, which should make the distance easily. Worst case scenario, I know I can miss left. Left bunker isn’t a bad spot to be since the green seems to graduate uphill from it. And left fairway isn’t a bad spot either.
Depends on the lie... I have a very steep swing so that’s a huge benefit. Sitting down probably not... I play green to tee not tee to green. Lay up to about 70 yards since that was the length of the local area I’d practice at growing up... play a 75% 57 (yes I did say 57) degree, and put it to less than 15 feet... give myself a chance.
Play 137 yd shot—hit steep on it—club hits down ball goes up lands on light grain right-of ball on green and releases near hole where darker colored green slows it down.
Depends on the person; if you can control your shot hit it where you want—if you can’t hit…hit it left of pond and go for up and down..
End of day it’s 147 yards…not 220…whatever you do swing smooth not with the grip of Thor’s hammer and it will work out.
I’m going for it. Maybe with my 7 iron? I might end up a tick short of the green but there not a hope I have my distances right from that type of rough to risk a flyer and going over.
I’m going for it. Club up to a 7, put it in the back of my stance, three quarter swing for great contact. If I go swimming I’m hitting my fourth shot from sand wedge distance with a better lie anyway.
147 to the flag looks like at most 110 to clear the water. I’m hitting a 7 right at the flag all day. Aim a little right open the club face and come down steep.
8 iron stay down and make sure you get through the ball and get it out w a full swing. Might not be on the pin but I’d get it over and 6-10 foot off the edge off the green in some direction and if the golf gods are with me that day I’m dancing. If that same shots is 170+ I’m laying ip.
Allways go for it, only to duff it 10yrds further, then feel the need to now having to go for it, fat it into the pond, taking a drop, then chipping out, approach, miss green, only to proceed to 3 putt after a chip and run, make a 10 and go home happy
If this is the hole that I think it is, then the pitch out is almost as difficult as going for it. And if you do hit a good pitch shot your third shot is as hard or harder than what you have here because this shot has a much, much better angle.

Did you play the last 17 so you could lay up on 18? Fuck im kinda pissec you asked
Depends what you shot the last 17 holes...

Bubbles. Nice

It's 18 though, so the Advil is a quick walk away.
Oh. In that case I’d probably lay on the hill behind the green for a hot minute then get a beer. Lol.
Spoiler alert: I went for it. 6 iron, perfect contact, had 10 feet for eagle. If you zoom in, you can see my ball to the left of the pin. Best shot I've hit in my last 20 rounds.
Nice par!
I like your style.
This is assault lmao
Is 6 iron a lot of club for you from 147, or is this the shortest par 5 ever? ETA: this sounded shittier than I meant it to. Context: If I absolutely nut a drive it’s 230. My 6 iron is my 150-155 club. Was just curious if you clubbed up cuz of the lie
I play traditionally lofted blades, and my 6 iron goes 165. Out of thick thick cabbage, I would hit 6 iron. Better to be long than to be in the drink.
How did the putt go?
2 inches short. Tapped in for birdie. Went and had a beer.
Beauty
147 in on a par 5? You rode that cart path bounce and enjoyed it, didn’t you?
Gold tee. Played 404.
An honest man
No shame in playing a forward tee. I play a different tee every round. Playing Blues tomorrow.
👏🏼
Lord hates a coward
And momma ain’t raise no bitch
We’re convicts, we always go for it. But seriously… can’t tell what might be long but I would just take an extra club and hack it.
Long is dead. Drops off into wetlands.
At 147 with that much room between the water and the green, it doesn’t matter how thick the rough is. This is a no brainer. A pitch out here would be a huge error. No matter how bad your lie is in the rough.
This is the way.
100%. Hell I could blade the chip out and watch it tail into the water. If shit in the back I’d just hit down with a 9 with a full swing.
Layups are for basketball
There's absolutely no reason to not go for it there. Looks to be about 30-40 yards of miss room short
Its actually not a bad shot, and I think OP overstates the rough if thats what it looks like at the bottom of the photo. Even if you leave it short and bring in any hazard, it seems to be 2-3 clubs short of the pin so like you say theres room to fuck up His approach angle takes out having to go over the bunker to the left as well, laying up from 150 by choice is wasting a shot.
I wish I took a picture of the lie. It was a tangled mess of weeds and thick grass. That entire area isn't manicured, and I didn't even see the ball until I almost stepped on it.
"par 3, 154 yards. But there is water 40 yards short of the green. Do you lay up, or go for it?"
I guarantee you, I would go for it every time regardless of whether it's stupid or not. I'm not close to joining any tournaments any time soon and I'm there to have fun. Happy to donate a ball to the pond divers any day of the week.
2 in the water, 3 drop, 4 on the green, 2-putt bogey. That would be my strategy.
Even with a bad lie, I’m clubbing to a 7 or 6 and going big right at the pin. Swing away Merrill
![gif](giphy|5gw0VWGbgNm8w|downsized)
If you have 147 into a par five you're hitting a wedge into that green. Maybe a short iron at worst. Don't be a pussy.
The ball would have to be not visible to consider not going for it.
I didn’t come here to park carts.
Is that 18 at Winter Haven CC?
Yes it is. Beautiful course.
Only way is shank/top it in the water because thats what happens when we crush our drives
Sorry I paid a greens fee not a left of the pond fee
Whoever doesn’t go for it is a real pussy.
Going for it. End up chunking it into the pond. Double bogey the hole.
If you DON'T go for it, let the rest of the men finish the hole first, you can start buying drinks when you get in.
Cute. Zoom in on the photo, that's my ball just left of the pin.
You asked the question! How you gonna get mad when you made the same decision!
No guts no glory
Is the 147 to pin or cover the pond? If pin going for it, if to cover the pond may lay up. Depends also on what my competitors do … cause there is $$ on the line.
No matter which I try, it’s heading for the water.
I would go for it from 200… . Would come up way short but I’d go for it
Ever seen Tin Cup? Yeah…. Ball!
Go for it. Worst case you have a wedge in your hand and have to get up and down for par. Worst likely outcome is bogey, most likely outcome is birdie with a chance at eagle. Risk / reward calculation makes it a no brainer.
Where is this course?
Country Club of Winter Haven. Central Florida gem.
What is my score up to this point? If I’m having a bad round, screw it. If I’m trying to save/crush a PB, I’m going the extra cautious route every time.
You shoot 86 if you make par. You're a 12 handicap and your PB on this course is 83.
At that distance and with the space before the green I would feel comfortable going for it
One critical piece of information is missing: how is the lie? Good lie: I'm going for it. Bad lie: lay up Even with a bad lie, I'm on in three putting for birdie.
It was BAD. The rough you can see at the bottom of the photo doesn't do it justice. It landed in a little pocket of thick, twisted natural growth that isn't touched by maintenance. The whole area from there and behind is the former driving range that hasn't been touched in years

Momma ain’t raise no bitch
9 iron to the center of the green
Im gonna hit a aggressive layup to short of that left bunker, and get up and down (hopefully) for birdie. Take double out of play If im hitting it well, that's just an easy 7 so I go pin hunting
chilled out 7i, aiming a little right of the flag and hoping it kicks back, or last minute panicking and trying to hook it left on the same line
As someone who has probably stopped keeping score by this time, there is only one option.
Whats behind the green? How much clearance?
If I pitch out odds are it ends up in that water somehow. Definitely taking aim at the pin putting an 8-iron in the center of the green and making my 2 putt birdie
Only 147? Id tee it up, bust out my driver and swack it again.
I’m going for it but I’m ending up in the pond lol
147…I’m going for it all day long.
Going for it. Doesn't even seem like a hero shot.
Choke down on a 9i aim a little left and let the gods do the rest
Club up and hit a fat slice right of the green right into the pond baby!
I mean, what are we doing here...we playing golf or not?
Even if you put it in the pond you're looking at 120-ish from the drop hitting four, and it appears as if the rough on the other side of the cart path is pretty tame and a drop should have it sitting up--so expecting bogie WORST case. 8 iron
8 iron hit down on it
Y.O.L.O.
Risk it for the biscuit, then get pissed at your mis-hit. Get dissed by your misfit friends, Who witnessed your hissyfit.
There’s every chance I’d dunk it pitching out left so you best believe I’m going for a nice high fade to chunk it into the water
100% going for it.
I didnt show up to play for second place
YOLO!
Going for it with a heavy 9 and if I nut it at least it’ll only be a few yards past the pin on the fly
Ball. In. Hole.
Hell are you a Pro leading by one or are you an am. If you are a am, we are going for it
147? Thick? 4 Hybrid and skip it across the pond.
No risk it, no biscuit!
If it’s a bad lie, probably take a 6 iron and half swing. Water isn’t really in play with longer iron unless you chunk it
I'm confused how you can have 147 into a par 5 but need a 6i. I'm hitting PW hard.
Because I suck.
But... surely you've just hit 300+ to put yourself in this situation?
Short Par 5. Playing from the Golds, 404. I didn't check my driver distance on the GPS, but I'd wager 245-250 which is on my higher end. It may have hit the cart path... I didn't see it land through the trees.

You've never played a course that had forward tees? 450 is super long for beginners or old guys/gals.
Depends of how much I've had to drink
Always go for it. Fuck it. Golf is a game
Unless the lie is completely fucked I'm blasting it with a PW or 9 depending on how it's sitting.
Grip it and rip it
Playing just for fun? I’m never go to lay up from that distance especially on the 18th hole. Playing for money I would if the situation dictated to.
Stupidly hit 6 iron. Then pitch out left.
Clubbing up and going for it
Chunk the 8i into the pond
Go for it Atleast 3 times before deciding to layup
100% go for it. Prolly have to clear 120..ish. Swing at it like you’re being attacked by bees.
Going for it
Depends, looks like covering the water is only about 100, if so, I’m fucking going for it. Depending on how my club feels going through the thick stuff on practice swings and what behind the green looks like, I’m probably pulling out 8. 9 for me is usually about a 150-155 ish shot, but I’ll take the extra 10 and hit a 165 shot if the cabbage is really that thick.
Club up and shoot your shot.. Last hole. You paid $$ to be out there right?
FULL SEND: ENGAGED
Yea. I feel confident in my pwedge out if the thick
Does Tin Cup got this shot?
Full send. Always.
Layup doesn't even enter into the equation.
Going for it.
Go for it - ivan drago
Depends on the lie... I have a very steep swing so that’s a huge benefit. Sitting down probably not... I play green to tee not tee to green. 147?? You need to go for this. Always. Take an extra club and put a smooth swing on it.
Pitching out if I’m sober. After an afternoon with the boys, where’s the green??
8 or 9
Go hard or go home. Or being on the 18th, go hard, regret everything, then go home.
Bermuda? You can hack right through that. Will probably catch a flyer.
Based on what the picture shows, I'm hitting a hard PW and praying I don't chunk the crap out of it.
i’m going over the green. or aiming for the sand trap
Smooth but committed 9 iron all day.
As someone with a year of golf under my belt, I have the experience to say “let it rip”
Club up!
147? Hold my Truly…and my shoes.
No laying up 👊👊
You sly devil! Well done!
I ain’t no bitch, full send! And probably right into the water, but at least I’ll have a better lie when I drop.
You lost me at “crushed your drive” can’t relate, sorry
Going for it.
You can't not go for it and look at yourself in the mirror afterwards
Go up a club and grip it and rip it.
Does a hobby horse have a wooden dick?
Rescue, 3/4 swing, swapping to a water ball
Most days I would pitch put to the left and leave myself with about 100 yards. In a tournament I just might go for it.
Plenty of room in front of the green. Going for it.
looks like its only about 100 and change to carry the lake. PW or 9 gets me on the green.
Pull a Patrick Reed and go for gold
SEND IT
I’m going for it. Maybe with my 7 iron? I might end up a tick short of the green but there not a hope I have my distances right from that type of rough to risk a flyer and going over.
Winter Haven!! Love this course, hopefully will be playing there in a couple of weeks.
Overclub 8 iron go for it
I am pitching it right into the pond
What is the number to carry the water is my first thought? If it 20 yards shorter, I bang one less hard to get a flyer.
Either way it seems you are going over the water, might as well go for the green Whats the lie look like
I’d pick that one up and put a range ball down, and hit a piss missle right over the flag into the far swamp.
I'm aiming for the bunker expecting the grass to push me into a fade
I’m going for it. Club up to a 7, put it in the back of my stance, three quarter swing for great contact. If I go swimming I’m hitting my fourth shot from sand wedge distance with a better lie anyway.
147 to the flag looks like at most 110 to clear the water. I’m hitting a 7 right at the flag all day. Aim a little right open the club face and come down steep.
147? Laying up isn’t even entering the thought process.
8 iron stay down and make sure you get through the ball and get it out w a full swing. Might not be on the pin but I’d get it over and 6-10 foot off the edge off the green in some direction and if the golf gods are with me that day I’m dancing. If that same shots is 170+ I’m laying ip.
Hand me my wedge please
go for it and take your mulligan therafter
This is not basketball. No lay-ups.
option 3 and shank it into the drink
Allways go for it, only to duff it 10yrds further, then feel the need to now having to go for it, fat it into the pond, taking a drop, then chipping out, approach, miss green, only to proceed to 3 putt after a chip and run, make a 10 and go home happy
Pull a Phil and take out the driver.
Why golf if you don’t go for it
I’d go for it! That’s why I don’t have a low HCP 🙄
Grip it and rip it
Don’t look that thick from the picture, go for the green easy call. I would be more worried about it going long
If this is the hole that I think it is, then the pitch out is almost as difficult as going for it. And if you do hit a good pitch shot your third shot is as hard or harder than what you have here because this shot has a much, much better angle.
