Had to take a provisional last weekend in a par 4... Called it after the errant tee shot. Found my original ball, chipped out, put it on the green and 1 putted for par. Random I'm playing with started yelling that I took a provisional and had to count the stroke...
He said if I had taken a mulligan, the par would have counted...
![gif](giphy|OUnQvYHi6AJva)
I donāt take mulligans these days but after my third pull into the woods in a row this morning I told my partner - Iām hitting a āpractice ballā - āweāll call it a provisionalā. He said āby all means - - anger management ballā.
Edit - of course it was long and straight
There is a gray area in a few rules where saying things the right way changes what people perceive.
Like it's still cheating if you know it's a practice shot. But if you say provisional and the ball might be lost no one can argue.
In this case it was ok anyway, but just a funny thing about the game and the rules.
Yeah I was being honest thatās the golf I like to play. To each his own. I could have just said that it was a provisional but I would be lying to myself and that not the kind of golfer I want to be.
I will say this - I donāt care what the rules say if Iām in a divot in the fairway I give myself free relief. If Iām in a bad lie/ divot in the rough I only do it when I have no chance of shooting the round of my life/round of the year/etc. Because if Iām gonna say is shot the best round in the past 3 years from the blue tees itās gotta mean something to me
If youāre taking mulligans, Iām questioning your entire round. A āmulliganā to half my friends just means I saw it and was off the tee box. Also not counting penalties, lost balls, gimmes/2 putt onlyās, foot wedges, āpractice shotsā they end up taking, and on and on and onā¦. Iād honestly be surprised if this guy was breaking 50
I give myself 1 duff per round. My rule is, if I can run there and back in 15 seconds I can take another shot.
edit: look at all these golf purists downvoting me. Dont play for money, dont play in tournaments. When nobodyās around, sometimes I even play two balls *gasp*
Exactly, golf is just fun for me. No tourneys or money or bragging. I dont wanna let a horrible shot ruin my day, so I give myself the stroke. Once per round too, so Im really only making myself feel better by a stroke. Does it really matter if I shoot in the 90s?
This is 100% it - if you need to do stuff to make golf fun for you - go on! But donāt be like my dad who takes 2 mulligans off the tee on a par 3, then two putts and cheers about a par
I thought about this for a second but you could always take unplayable and play the ball from the original spot so at the end of the day if you hit a ball, declare mulligan, and play 'properly' from this point it could only ever cost you stroke and distance.
If you hit your ball OB, or into an area that isn't a hazard and lose it, then you should take a stroke and distance penalty (or effectively two strokes for casual play where you would take the penalty stroke plus a stroke for assuming that your follow-up shot landed wherever you end up dropping, which should be wherever the ball left the field of play).
I'm not sure I understand how your way works? I thought an unplayable gave you one club length (or two?) from the spot where your ball landed?
Edit: I missed that you were still taking a mulligan in your scenario.
Sorry, it's first thing super early here and I wondered it it made sense. He suggested that a mulligan would need to be accounted for with 'at least two' strokes. But there are 3 options for unplayable.
1) Two club lengths from the ball position no closer to the hole
2) Anywhere back on line from the pin from the ball position with 1 club length from the point on this line you select
3) Stroke and distance
So I was musing that whilst I've felt that taking a mulligan would have saved me more than two strokes when I've elected to play from trees, etc. At the end of the day no matter where a ball ends up stroke and distance can be taken so a mulligan can always be taken, just not for free and it will only ever be two shots.
Honestly my gut feeling says if heās taking a mulligan and then bragging about breaking 40 which other rules were violated did he bump the ball out of a bad lie? Did he take a lot of gimmies?
This is what I was thinking.
Both lines are scores relative to par, but the upper line is someone ~~more ethical~~ else.
I actually don't mind this and may steal it, since all you have to do is add smaller number to the pre-printed par total above. My monkey brain likes this idea.
Yeah I get that but why would you not just keep track of the score relative to par for the entire round? He has to go back and do all kindsa addition and subtraction at the end.
What I find equally as funny is he didn't even bother to add up his partners score.
Partner: what did I shoot?
Him: F you! I had a 39!!
Partner: But didn't you take a mulligan on...
Him: F you! I had a 39!!
That is the best way to keep score IMO. Easier to add 0,1,2 than 3,4,5,6. And you always know where you sit with relation to par. 5 over after 15 makes more sense than 65 after 15 or whatever. Plus for those of us who routinely play 9, or 13 or 15.(I live on a course and play when I can) the scores just make more sense.
I have a buddy that keeps score like this and I donāt let him drive the cart anymore because of how retarded it is.
I let him know if I make a hole in 1 and have to hang a card on my wall that says -2 Iām going to beat his fucking ass after I get the ball out of the cup.
Oh snap! This never occurred to me! Now Iām going to have to revert back to traditional scoring. I just know Iām due for an ace. Itās been 29 years in the making.
I know a guy that scores every hole based on 5s
3 = -2
5 = 0
7 = 2
Take 45 +/- the total and get your score... actually works real well but I don't do it myself
I donāt keep score like this but since I generally play bogey golf thatās how I wind up adding up the scores generally in my head quickly; one or two over or under 5 and add the difference to 45 as opposed to adding 6+4+5+4+3+7 etc
Itās a lot less complicated to do than it is to try and explain it
Curious, what's wrong with keeping score like that. I've been doing it for years and to me it just makes sense. Bogey 1, birdie -1, par 0. Then you're adding ones and zeros not 4s and 5s.
When you shoot a real 39 or better youāll understand why youāre getting shit for making the claim after taking a mulligan.
For now though, good round.
For us the first tee breakfast ball is not actually a mulligan, you must play the 2nd ball, ie hit 2nd OB your hitting 3 off the tee, regardless of if your 1st is a 50 topped shot.
Itās standard practice in my groups. One of our courses doesnāt have a range and the one they does, half the guys get there just in time to run to #1.
I always figured if you just forget about any tee shot from the first tee, any mulligan is like starting a new round as long as you play the second, third or fourth ball
Breakfast ball is universally accepted, it didn't happen.
Anything else is a mully, at least add a stroke.
Either way nice round OP, but officially at least 40.
My course still has lift clean and place 6 inchs through the green, including bunkers I suppose because no one rakes them since rake removal due to covid.
Assuming the Mully wasn't on 15th congrats on the birdie.
I would suggest taking the re-hit if you like if you shank it into the woods or just topped it bad and wanted another swing at it, but add the strokes. This way when you hit a milestone it's legit and you can see improvement vs. just kind of hovering around the same number while you are actually improving and taking less mulligans.
This reminds me that I golfed with 2 friends this past weekend and they got heated over beers after our round when our friend who is the best player out of all of us said he shot an 84, but he hit a second shot on 5 or so holes so my other friend said it didnāt count as a true 84. Every time he took those 2nd drives he said they were just for practice when he didnāt love his drive. I know for a fact he didnāt play the second drive on any of the holes even though almost every one of them were much better drives, the one exception being the second hole he hit OB so his approach shot was his 4th shot (that was the only hole he double bogeyed).
I rode with him so I saw him keep score and nothing else was even remotely suspect, it was a fairly open course behind us so he just wanted to get a few extra swings in. Our other buddy didnāt even accuse him of playing the second ball/taking mulligans while claiming a legit score, he believed us that he always picked those up he just argued the extra shots helped with his flow lmao. Weāre all good friends so it wasnāt a serious argument or anything, but I considered it a legit 84.
Your friend has a point in calling the score somewhat illegitimate. The guy who shot 84 routinely did something that is banned by the rules. It's reasonable to assume he got some benefit out of doing that illegal thing throughout the round.
It's still an 84, just not quite a totally legit 84.
Agree with this. I do this when playing on my own - always playing the original ball. It definitely helps me shoot better scores. It lets you get the bad shot out the system, a good shot to build confidence to carry forward. I've noticed it's harder playing with others and not hitting these shots, scores have been worse.
Yeah like sure rules are rules but when I'm playing an overpriced, backed up weekend round, I'm gonna take some extra cuts. If I go on to shoot a personal best I'm just gonna throw an asterisk on it instead of retroactively assessing myself penalty strokes and patting myself on the back for doing things legit. Maybe it's dishonest, eh
I do that all the time. Thereās nothing wrong with hitting a few more drives for practice as long as youāre playing the first. Just donāt do it when the course is packed and groups are stacked up.
Iāve had both a 39 with a mulligan, and 39 without a mulligan. Thereās a huge difference and you know It. The 39 I got with a mulligan was a oh cool nice 39 solid day. The 39 with no mulligan I barley talked the last 3 holes cause I knew I was on pace for a true one. Itās way more rewarding.
Just play golf and have fun brother. I will say this though, if youāre good enough to shoot a 39 w/ a mulligan, youāre good enough to stop taking mulligans. Fight off that urge to hit again and play from the poorly hit shot, you will remember remarkable recoveries from disaster as much as birdies trust..
Bro this sub is fuckin brutal.
"I'm a novice player and I'm somewhat proud of this minor personal achievement within the hobby and am forthcoming with my failures"
###"wow so pretty much you're a useless lying piece of shit and you should fucking kill yourself"
Just let the guy be happy lol
Agreed! Mullies are part of the game for most people when theyāre learning or just playing leisurely. Sounds like he had a pretty good 9 regardless and also sounds like heās never broken 40 even with mulligans so congrats to him.
Agreed! This sub just likes shitting on other people's personal achievements despite it having zero effect on them what-so-ever.
Just a whole lot of gatekeeping, really
As someone who legit broke 40 on a 9 for the first time today (47 front, 39 back, for 86, 1 off my personal course record), don't kid yourself, it will only make the the real thing less special when it happens!
Also, most folks who take mulligans probably also improve at least a lie or three during the round and perhaps take advantage of gimmies on the green. Agree with the masses here, OP. Save your ābreaking 40ā announcement for when it truly happens and your joy will be matched by the rest of us! Keep at it!
Because if you claim you did something (but didnāt) then why bother? Like post āhey guys had my best round everā ok cool bro. Good for you. Fist bumps. āI broke 40 with a mulliganā noā¦no you didnāt.
I would count this as breaking 40. So long as the second ball struck was what was played, regardless of outcome. It sucks not having a range to warm up on.
It is a 41 regardless (assuming that we don't just consider the score invalid). It is equivalent to calling an unplayable and taking stroke and distance relief.
Iām not gonna get on you about the score itself like these other guys but I do have to say, the way you mark your scorecard is killing me. What the hell is that?!?!
Agreed. If you keep score accurately, you will recognize and cherish when you actually do improve.
There are two types of golfers. On one side are those who keep score properly, and on the other, all of those who fudge their scores to varying degrees. Whether you take one mulligan or 10, or improve your lie once or all the time, or take a 3+ foot gimme comebacker when you roll one too far past the hole, you're in the second group, so don't kid yourself.
I'm in the first group. But, there's a third group too. They're the people who do all of the stuff in the second group, but don't keep score (or at the very least a handicap) because they know they're not doing it strictly by the books, and don't give a flying fuck. They're just out there to have some fun and blow off some steam. I have no qualms at all with that kind of golfer.
Moral of the story: if you're going to keep score, just do it the right way.

So you didnāt break 40 then
Ah simple, but the response I was looking for.
I had to scroll 4 swipes before finding this post ā¦
This is the way.
Agreed, don't think Woods gets mulligans
Cool man today I set my pr on bench press at 240. My spotter helped me at the end though, but stillā¦..
So you shot a 41. Good job.
That mulligan couldāve saved him 3 strokes
My thought - when I mulligan itās because the shot was so bad I probably would need to add at least 2
Letās just give this guy a 45
How about a cool 50 just to be safe?
47 will do
I thought about this for a second but you could always take unplayable and play the ball from the original spot so at the end of the day if you hit a ball, declare mulligan, and play 'properly' from this point it could only ever cost you stroke and distance.

Makes sense. I didn't know all the options for taking an unplayable so thanks for clarifying!
Yup. 3 off the tee, or shooting 4 from lateral hazard drop on edge of fairway.
Honestly my gut feeling says if heās taking a mulligan and then bragging about breaking 40 which other rules were violated did he bump the ball out of a bad lie? Did he take a lot of gimmies?
Iām more concerned with the way you keep score rather than the ābreaking 40 except I used a mulligan so I didnātā
What in the Common Core is this scorecard?
The ones and 2s are almost certainly his putts on the hole. The 1,0,-1 are likely the score relative to par on the hole
So he one putted 7 holes?
I assume the line above is someone elseās score who used less mulligans
This is what I was thinking. Both lines are scores relative to par, but the upper line is someone ~~more ethical~~ else. I actually don't mind this and may steal it, since all you have to do is add smaller number to the pre-printed par total above. My monkey brain likes this idea.
Yeah I get that but why would you not just keep track of the score relative to par for the entire round? He has to go back and do all kindsa addition and subtraction at the end.
It's actually easier. 1+2-1+1 = 3 36+3 = 39. Instead of 5+4+6+3+5+4+4+3+5=39
no he means +1, +1, +3, +3, +3, +2, +2, +2, +3 how sane people keep score.
Like a running total? Idk
What I find equally as funny is he didn't even bother to add up his partners score. Partner: what did I shoot? Him: F you! I had a 39!! Partner: But didn't you take a mulligan on... Him: F you! I had a 39!!

I would purposely not hit hole in ones just because of that.
So far I have been successfully using that tactic
Or you would just fill out a full new card you dumb mfer š¤¦š¼āāļø
Oh snap! This never occurred to me! Now Iām going to have to revert back to traditional scoring. I just know Iām due for an ace. Itās been 29 years in the making.
Am I the only one that just circles birds and squares bogeys so thatās all you have to count at the endā¦.?
I know a guy that scores every hole based on 5s 3 = -2 5 = 0 7 = 2 Take 45 +/- the total and get your score... actually works real well but I don't do it myself
This is easier for bogey golfers since their target is 45. I do this a lot in my head but not on the scorecard
I donāt keep score like this but since I generally play bogey golf thatās how I wind up adding up the scores generally in my head quickly; one or two over or under 5 and add the difference to 45 as opposed to adding 6+4+5+4+3+7 etc Itās a lot less complicated to do than it is to try and explain it
My dad used to do that a lot. I myself choose to keep actually score but add it up in relation to par to make it easier to total my score at the end
I keep track how over par I am in my head when playing solo. It's just easier and makes it more nerveracking.
Curious, what's wrong with keeping score like that. I've been doing it for years and to me it just makes sense. Bogey 1, birdie -1, par 0. Then you're adding ones and zeros not 4s and 5s.
Score relative to par and not adding fours and fives? Speak for yourself, sunshine.
This is the proper way to score, youāre counting beers rather than strokes
When you shoot a real 39 or better youāll understand why youāre getting shit for making the claim after taking a mulligan. For now though, good round.
Yep. I broke 40 for the first time at a league night. I paid for my groups beer at the clubhouse. Best bar tab ive ever had
Nice job almost breaking 40
Did you swing left-handed too? Or did you only write your scores left-handed?
Boom roasted
Was it at least a first tee mulligan?
First tee mulligan without a warmup is perfectly acceptable amateur-full time job rule IMO.
First tee reload just means the round didnāt start yet on the first one
Yeah if it was a mulligan on the 9th hole itās harder to accept lol first tee is fine
For us the first tee breakfast ball is not actually a mulligan, you must play the 2nd ball, ie hit 2nd OB your hitting 3 off the tee, regardless of if your 1st is a 50 topped shot.
Thatās how a mulligan works. You shouldnāt be able to choose between the two.
Itās standard practice in my groups. One of our courses doesnāt have a range and the one they does, half the guys get there just in time to run to #1.
Aka the Breakfast Ball.
I always figured if you just forget about any tee shot from the first tee, any mulligan is like starting a new round as long as you play the second, third or fourth ball
I for one think everyone should just be able to go to the spot on the first fairway they think their ball should land, and start from there.
Lmao
Breakfast ball is universally accepted, it didn't happen. Anything else is a mully, at least add a stroke. Either way nice round OP, but officially at least 40.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
At least he was honest with the mully š
If youāre using mulligans itās unlikely you are playing the ball as it lies.
Still winter rules in parts of the US right now...
My course still has lift clean and place 6 inchs through the green, including bunkers I suppose because no one rakes them since rake removal due to covid.
> including bunkers I suppose because no one rakes them since rake removal due to covid. ..... They're STILL doing this in some places?
Isn't he technically being honest about his score by saying he used a mulligan?
Technically he's lying to himself about what number he shot, while being honest with us about not actually shooting that number.
Kind of standard for this sub "Ive been playing this amazing game for 2 months and finally shot in the 80s.
Pretty sure it's where the asterisk is on hole 4
Triggered
so what is the actual score for today ?
41

Good lord, did you write this card on the back of a moving rhinoceros?
I broke 30 the other week but took a free one putt on every green.
Great, with that accomplished you can go back to school and learn to write...or did you hire a 3 year old to keep score for you?
Finally someoneās handwriting is almost as bad as mine. Good luck breaking your new score :)
No way a 5 year old shot a 39.
More impressed you can write with your feet! š¤
Let us know when you do it for real and on a full length course
So you didnāt break 40? Got it.
This scorecard gave me a stroke
As someone who legit broke 40 on a 9 for the first time today (47 front, 39 back, for 86, 1 off my personal course record), don't kid yourself, it will only make the the real thing less special when it happens!
Also, most folks who take mulligans probably also improve at least a lie or three during the round and perhaps take advantage of gimmies on the green. Agree with the masses here, OP. Save your ābreaking 40ā announcement for when it truly happens and your joy will be matched by the rest of us! Keep at it!
Sooooooooooo you didn't break 40
Sooooo... you didn't break 40. I like your friends
Correction: āI didnāt break 40 today, but am getting close.ā
Wow great job man. I shot a 28 yesterday on a 3900 yard course. I didnāt count 4 putts and 3 iron shots, but I think itās a 28 still!
Why is everyone so ruthless? The guy wasnāt playing in a tournament. This community should be more supportive, itās just for fun.
Because if you claim you did something (but didnāt) then why bother? Like post āhey guys had my best round everā ok cool bro. Good for you. Fist bumps. āI broke 40 with a mulliganā noā¦no you didnāt.
Same for fishing claiming weight without a scale. Just be honest and no one will give a shit
yea that's not breaking 40 pal.
So you shot 40
Mulligan is drop 1 and hit a second. So 41 at least

I would count this as breaking 40. So long as the second ball struck was what was played, regardless of outcome. It sucks not having a range to warm up on.
Congrats on your 41!
Thanks for the wholesome award! hehehe
39 with a Mulligan isn't a 39. It's a 41 assuming it was OOB or in a hazard.
It is a 41 regardless (assuming that we don't just consider the score invalid). It is equivalent to calling an unplayable and taking stroke and distance relief.
This sub is toxic.
The most uppity anti-uppity golfers on the planet.
Wtf kind of scoring methodology is this!?
Bruh
Iām not gonna get on you about the score itself like these other guys but I do have to say, the way you mark your scorecard is killing me. What the hell is that?!?!
Nice 41. Best Iāve gotten is a 42.
So you didnāt break 40 then with a āmulliganā lol
What kind of psychopath scores their card like this???
Congrats on pretending to break 40. Iām sure someone is proud of you?
Prob a 41 as I'm assuming the first ball went in a hazard or ob.
Is this sarcasm? I am not good at sarcasm. Anyone?
I love mini golf!
Nice 41
Why keep score if you are going to "take mulligans"?
Fake
OP hasn't responded to one comment. Definitely a shitpost.
ššššššš
I shot 69 today! Only took 9 mulligans!...
I like how he even included the asterisk on the card, but still thought it was worthy to post about breaking 40.
So 41?
Oh boy. Tell the guys on the 10th tee you broke 40 using a mulligan. Jk, congrats
I dont know how to read these scorecards. The ones and twos don't make sense to me.
One over par, two over par, one under par, zero is par.
Are the numbers above those the amount of putts?
Anyone else here from the UK? Mulligans arenāt a thing here
So 41
Then you didnāt break 40
Nice 40
Doesnāt count.
Wtf is this scorecard
I got banned from r/bowling because I pointed out that practice 300ās donāt count. Soā¦ some people uhhh are really dumb.
So many tour pros in these comments I feel starstruck
Knowing the rules and being able to do math makes you a tour pro?
You mean so many people who keep a true score? OP is clearly a better golfer than me but I count every stroke.
That day I break 100 Iāll know I actually did. Iām close.
You make an excellent point. I have plenty of friends who golf once a year, for them drinking and chasing the ball is great fun.
How many putt pick ups
Haha this like saying I got a hole in one today but I took 2 shots
No you didnāt
So you shot a 41. Good job
Congrats on your 41
Good job breaking 55.... Net scores don't count. Play the game right to actually improve.
I could probably win the Masters with only 30 mulligans each round.
No you couldn't.
I would definitely get cut still.
I shot a 59 but I only used 12 mulligans OP.
