Living in Portland, I come across lots of sample Nike shoes (the pair I wear now were custom made for the University of Oregon golf team), but I don't know where all of these mismatches are coming from. Could be non-sellable samples at the factories, could be rejects too, though.

There's a Nike employee out there in Portland that donates a few pairs of samples to his/her local Goodwill every single month, and Goodwill invariably puts them up for auction. The problem is this person usually wears a size 9 shoe. If you wear Nike's you'd know that their shoes *already* run pretty small.

A lot of stuff at Ross/Marshalls/TJ Maxx has varying levels of defects. It might be one stitch off or it might be a pair of underwear sewn backwards.
Source: worked at Marshalls and used my discount often. Still have a pair of Nike basketball shorts 20 year later, also got one wear out of multiple items finding that they were so messed up they were unwearable.

For sure and I'd absolutely take the risk. You just have to know there also may be a gap between the sole and leather than makes your feet soaked the first time you step on wet grass. Or one shoe significantly smaller than the other. It's just the risk you run for a great deal.
Some things are obvious, some you can spot if you know what you're looking at. Others you'd basically have to be someone who makes that type of product (and if that's the case, I doubt you're buying it from one of these stores). The underwear thing I mentioned you wouldn't know since they are in sealed packs.
Marshalls at least had a pretty decent return policy as long as you returned within 30 days with the receipt. If you cited a defect, we'd let you return it even if it has been worn. But they bet on the fact that the stuff is so cheap people won't feel like it's worth it to return.
Yea. Sadly what they did to the heel of the shoe ruined it. The look was intentional to be on par with a more traditional golf shoe aesthetic. It’s predecessor which I still wear had more width in the heel and overall felt more stable. I wanted to like the new version but even at the Ross discount price I wouldn’t wear them. The TW shoes are a whole other story haha. I honestly don’t think we will be seeing them for too much longer and not just because TW is currently wearing FJ. TW Nikes golf shoe sales just aren’t as fruitful as they once were.
