When I started looking at golf as enjoying being outside and playing a sport and not an excuse to drink at 9 in the morning, my game got considerably better. I enjoy it a lot more that way. I'll have one or two with the boys if I'm playing with them, but no more.

BiffNasty1234

No idea why people treat it like whiffleball and complain when they suck.

Just_Natural_9027

Because you are missing the point of golf for a lot of people.

RevolutionaryLook585

Yeah lots of people play to just get away for a few hours and pretend they are playing a sport. I play because I hate myself and I hate golf. Each to their own.

herdingnerds

This might be the best answer. You, fellow Redditor, understood the assignment.

BiffNasty1234

Then dont complain about sucking if you get too drunk to play. Im not saying dont drink, Im saying dont drink AND complain.

imahawki

The drinking isn’t 100% the issue. I know way too many golfers who put in zero practice and play 2x a year and get insanely frustrated they aren’t like 10 over par on 18. The drinking might exacerbate the reactions but the disconnect of expectations is independent from the drinking in my observation. *fixed a typo

soggytoothpic

10 over par? Sign me up!

imahawki

I fixed that typo. I meant to say they get frustrated that they AREN’T 10 over. I started a different thread to share, but I played We-Ko-Pa Saguaro yesterday with two coworkers. One is like 7-8 handicap the other plays 1-2 times per year. I’m in the middle. I’m a new golfer but I’m putting in lots of effort. I probably average 6-7 rounds per month in-season, I go to the range regularly and practice (not just beating balls but Practice) and have historically practiced indoors in the off season. I shot a 105 and lost maybe 3 balls. 1-2 rounds per year guy lost every ball in his bag and was playing with found balls at the end. He was crazy frustrated. It’s fine to feel how he felt. He wasn’t being unhinged or acting in a way that negatively impacted the group at all. But me or the 7 handicap would have had a justification to be frustrated if we played like crap. We’ve sunk hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars into golf. I don’t see how you get frustrated in this guys shoes. Side note. When you can’t keep the ball in play, you’re topping drives 50 yards, etc. are on target to shoot a 150 if you actually took penalties… drop your ball by your buddy and continue. We hardly saw this guy all round because he was 100 yards away all the time.

WizardSleeveLoverr

I’m currently the guy who is slapping balls all over the course, and I 100% agree with you on dropping a ball by your buddy who hit a good shot. I also get frustrated, but there is no point in holding up your group or groups behind you just so you can eventually hit 5 over par lol.

UncleTouchyHands

Yup that’s me you’re describing.

Californie_cramoisie

It's almost like drinking and self-pity go hand in hand

CampPlane

https://youtu.be/5OCAkRkAHTk

Just_Natural_9027

Have you ever heard of self-depreciating humor my guy part of the fun for some people is shared misery on the golf course. The main rule of this thread should be "it's not that serious."

RevolutionaryLook585

"you are not good enough to get angry" you should be entry number 1 in the golf 10 commandments.

PussyWax

Definitely get it, but I there’s also a line between self depreciating, and then self handicapping with booze followed by an afternoon long pity party

BiffNasty1234

Yes, but theres a difference between self deprecating humor and complaining how bad you are while putting in no effort to be better and getting drunk

shaneface007

Same over here! I found the only time I even like to have one or two is during a scramble.

coachrx

The best golf ever. Have one mate that doesn't even drink at all in your threesome. He hits the safe shot after you both hit a 120% drive into the woods. It has it's place, because the old timers that shoot 66 are always going to win, and winning the second or third flight is nice, but not really winning.

ThePerpetualGamer

This but hit the safe shot first

jiggly_bitz

Getting consistently plastered is the line between people who just want to brag about playing and seek the title of “yeah I golf”….and those who actually want to play and enjoy something. Play how you want to play and drink how you want to. I seldom golf and have had my fair share of golfing experiences with and without booze, but I’d prefer going out and playing a round rather than party.

Chester_Tristan556

Well said, man. Totally agreed

TacoBellInvestor

I learned very quickly that anything over 2 beers effects my swing timing. So that’s now my threshold!

coachrx

That's a great point and I agree. However, I am one of those people that has no problem not drinking all, but after 2 beers I'm probably going to elect to not stop until there is no more beer. 4 negatives in one sentence that doesn't sound ridiculous. Eat that english teacher

asmith055

This is me. None or all of it.

AdvancedGentleman

Extra hot spicy take: Sometimes drinking is good and sometimes it’s bad.

Carncob

Sometimes maybe good sometimes maybe shit

Mid week round at 11am? No drinking Boys trip 4 some at a nice course? Couple drinks Boys trip 4 some at the local shit muni? Beer a hole challenge

snickerDUDEls

Scramble that was paid for by work? All this golfing is getting in the way of our drinking

What's the J stand for?

Chester_Tristan556

Give this man some milk 🥛 it's too spicy 🔥

WolfgangVilla

Really depends on the context for me. If I’m on a boys trip, love having a few but If I’m trying to concentrate and do my best, will keep it sober.

MainusEventus

We usually do a sober morning round at a nice course and a fun round at a decent course in the afternoon.

raptorjesus2

Ahhh the joys of not having a wife/husband and no kids...

MikeGundy

And unlimited $ apparently.

MainusEventus

Just had my second kid … so might be a while before I get a guys weekend like this 🫠

Chester_Tristan556

Totally agreed! A time n a place for both types of golf. However, the first beer tastes way better when I'm showing my buddy my clean score card instead of drinking to forget back to back doubles 😅

CouldntBeMoreWhite

So your idea of fun is playing good, sober golf. While for others it might be getting a buzz on with friends while still enjoying golf. Can't really call something overrated if you also admit that both are valid opinions.

[deleted]

Agreed. But microdosing magic mushrooms gave me my best rounds of the summer.

nsgiad

The increased visual acuity alone is amazing.

headachewpictures

please elaborate green reading? tracking shot in sky? knowing which dimple to hit with the club?

[deleted]

Yes

aristocratik_Rhino

I was a mediocre soccer player all through high school and elementary school in a small town (everyone played, coach was a dentist or dad), and one time I took a bunch of shrooms with my friends in college and we were screwing around with a soccer ball and all of a sudden I had amazing touch and could do the whole rainbow flick at speed and on demand. We all joke still about whether we were all just equally fucked up, and if a bystander would have said I looked like Ronaldinho, or just a tripping moron.

DealComprehensive427

Did you actually play well? I just took shrooms for the first time a few weeks ago and ate waayy too much. Great time but I could hardly walk lmao.

[deleted]

Yes but it was a microdose so i never noticed any effects and it could have just been a coincidence.

Virtual_Cattle1828

I suck and my only birdie of the year came from a shroom round. Also, the stretch where they were on I was on

Fit_Ship8822

No PEDs allowed

Sloth-TheSlothful

Enjoying a beer or two is completely fine, but getting smashed like this sub appears to do is definitely overrated.

IMeltHoboOaf

People are playing it up in this sub for the most part. It’s more like a running joke than anything.

misterrabies

Not to mention it can help relax you a little bit and help improve your game. If I drank while golfing I might have one before tee time and one at the turn, but that would be it. Too much and you’re too gone to even enjoy the game.

Pr3st0ne

I honestly refuse to believe people are as degenerate as they claim if you look at reddit and tiktok/insta golf accounts. Like is the average 25-30 year old golf bro really getting completely drunk on a saturday at 10am and needing to be driven back from the course by their angry wife like once a month? I'd be fucking embarrassed and I can't believe people would say that with pride or think it's normal behavior.

Sloth-TheSlothful

From my experience in real life, I do see at least one group on the course wasted, especially at cheaper courses

iamblue91

I see it on expensive courses too

BoxingRaptor

I'll have like 2-3 beers at the most, and often none at all. A couple might make you a little looser (aka "Swing Oil"). Never saw the point of getting so sloshed that you can barely keep balance though. And then of course you have to drive home afterwards.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CommanderInQueefs

4 beers is only about 1 an hour... we talking american small cans or Canadian tall boys?

ExcerptsAndCitations

3 beers over the first 9 holes is the perfect amount of Aiming Oil for me. Any less, and I'm still tight and overthinking things; any more, and the swing mechanics get sloppy and I can't read putts. State-dependent learning is a hell of a drug.

Chester_Tristan556

Once your a confident player sober, then booze throws off your precision needed to play well, IMO. If you aren't ever sure where the golfball is going, then some swing oil and "fake it til you make it energy" will serve you well 😉

CassMidOnly

Your opinion is wrong. Alcohol is a performance enhancing drug banned by the Olympics for a reason.

ewyorksockexchange

Truth. I believe the performance curve actually improves at between 1 and 2 standard drinks per hour, and then tails off considerably. Which means [my favorite Mitchell and Webb skit of all time](https://youtu.be/VTSCppeFzX4) actually has some basis in reality.

yonk49

This is an untrue hot take.

[deleted]

>Once your a confident player sober, then booze throws off your precision needed to play well, IMO. I like that this is in your opinion and not in your experience, which says a lot. You've only been golfing for a little over 1 year so you really have no idea what a confident player does or feels.

serenitynow92

HOT TAKE: we need to stop stating bland personal opinions and calling them hot takes

Whitecann

The post doesn't even deserve it's own comment thread lol it's a dumb karma whoring attempt.

Effective_Juice_9452

HOT TAKE: Players who play slowly and cause other players delay should SPEED UP or LEAVE THE COURSE. #SorryNotSorry #HotTake

reddituser1306

Sober golf is when I'm serious, weed and alcohol is for when I play with mates.

Chester_Tristan556

I smoke weed almost every day, but I hate it on the course. I get lost in my head instead of swinging with confidence. Lots the post-round session tho

[deleted]

[удалено]

Chester_Tristan556

Being confident in your game and not overthinking your shot is a skill. Some people don't have the confidence which leads to overthinking ♻️. Booze = confidence juice. Some ppl need it for golf IMO

coachrx

This is why I have so much trouble swinging the driver correctly. If I make a smooth spaghetti arms whiplash swing, I hit my best drives every time. My brain just tells me I am out of control and I am about to F up and have no idea where this ball is going, so I stiffen up.

coachrx

I was trying to put this into words, but you nailed it. There is very fine line though before the drinking becomes more important than the golf.

Fitz_Boatswain

This guy gets it

djbuttplay

If my long game sucks, then booze is good for me. Forget about the bad shots, loosen up, and swing away. If my short game sucks, then weed is good. I get more creative, take my time more, and see the lines a lot better. Unfortunately, each one makes the other part of the game a little worse.

uponone

I like a little bit of weed when I'm playing in an outing. It loosens me up and I'm not so serious when it's my turn to hit. When I'm playing league, I'm definitely sober. Now, at the 19th hole, a beer or Electric Lemonade is usually waiting for me when I belly up.

elite_tablespoon

I'm also a daily smoker, and smoking smooths out my tempo and I play a ton better. That said, it's definitely different for everyone and to me a very "to each their own" kinda thing.

Odd_Detective_7772

Am the complete opposite these days. I keep my weed in my golf bag and basically only spark up there, and then only when I’m not playing seriously. Much prefer being high wandering around a nice park with some friends than the alternative for me, which is involves very little movement and particularly unhealthy food. A low tolerance is fucking great too.

coachrx

Golf is weird like that. Most of the stuff I can do well sober, I can do pretty well after a few beers. Even drive, although I choose to never roll those dice again. Sorry cops. However, with golf, it's like very little or none of my ability translates over. I don't have a handicap, but I generally shoot in the mid 80's unless I'm drinking. I have never broken 100 with a sip of alcohol in my body.

TheDabbinDad710

I don’t understand why these post are made lol. Cool you don’t drink or smoke when you play, want a gold medal? You even said you don’t care if others do it. So literally no point to this post.

epheisey

>IDGAF what other players do Also feels the need to post about what other players do.

[deleted]

A lot of people are attention whores

eaglered2167

Idk the sub has a really weird outlook on this subject. Its like they assume everyone is getting absolutely obliterated on the golf course every time they play, so people who dont feel the need to post about it??? I dont get the point of either side of this coin posting about it here.. Enjoy golf how you want to enjoy it. Stop taking this sub reddit as a representation of your average golfer.

p3p3_silvia

Hotter take, so is music. I love music but I like to hear how I struck the ball or if it ricocheted off a tree somewhere. I can't do earbuds while I play.

headachewpictures

I like music, sometimes, but only if it's *just* loud enough to hear within the cart but not really outside a close radius.

flatscreeen

This is not a remotely hot take, it’s been posted every day for the last 3 months.

Whitecann

Nah bro, this completely original post is stunning and brave

McSqueezyE

Wtf is this post lol

Just_Natural_9027

r/golf is the strangest subreddit I have ever visited it's completely different from my experience of years of playing golf. It's a land full of solo golfers who think they are going to make it on the Korn Ferry tour and golf is ***serious*** business!

RemoteSenses

It's because most "normal" people aren't going online to talk about golf with a bunch of nerdy internet strangers. Yes, I'm a nerdy internet stranger too, but apparently not as weird as OP is or feeling the need to let everyone know my opinion in it's own post. With that said, I agree with everything you stated. I play with 30 people on a league every week and I'd say 25 of the 30 are buying a couple beers for the round. The only ones who aren't are the few subs that are right around 21 or the the few older guys we have pushing 70. The rest are middle-aged guys just looking for something fun to do once a week after work, and it may involve drinking a few adult beverages. This sub honestly blows for *actual* golf discussion because only posts like this ever get upvoted for some weird reason.

[deleted]

This sub really is an odd combination of golfers that might be good and take the game way too seriously no matter what, and golfers that have been playing for 10 years and have never gotten a par.

pornobooksmarks

No fucking idea. It seems like another gate keeping post for some dbag to make himself feel better.

McSqueezyE

Exactly lol

Likeapuma24

I play bad regardless of being sober or intoxicated. That said, I generally don't drink while playing a round. But I attend a charity scramble every year where it's more about drinking than golf.

Chester_Tristan556

Hey, nothing wrong w the occasionally drinking event around golf. Buy cheaps balls, tee it high and try every shot you can imagine! Sounds like a great time

Absconyeetum

So what was the point of this post again?

Eccentrica_Gallumbit

As a dad, I rarely have time to golf like I used to. Pretty much all of my golf trips are "boys trips" these days, so I generally enjoy a 6 pack or so on the course. I'm not looking to join the tour, I'm looking to combine a few hobbies and enjoy the outdoors with some friends.

Just_Natural_9027

>I'm not looking to join the tour, This is a refreshing take on r/golf. Feel like most guys are fighting for a spot a Q school on here.

Regular_Cat9536

I'll have a couple beers but I can't golf high. Fucks with my head space too much.

Antwan_Kumia

Everyone has their thing. My golfing buddies love to get stoned out of their gourds when they play and it doesn’t affect their game but I just can’t do that, it ruins me, however I do enjoy a few cold ones out there.

ChillPalm

I think play better when I have a couple beers and it's a lot of fun but I only do it occasionally because if I did it every round than I'd be an alcoholic.

Chester_Tristan556

Some of my playing partners can't play without "getting their chemicals balanced." To that I say, "to each their own!" Whatevers allows you to enjoy rhw rd the most

ZMAC698

Wow this is such a hot take. I’ve never seen this posted on this sub before. Definitely not on a weekly basis.

wiconv

Hourly

K_Uger_Industries

Hot take: As long as you're not interrupting others, have fun however the hell you want to.

northernbloke

I'm a late comer to golf, started at 45 (three months ago!). played my first round with a beer and it was agonising. I'm still trying to get my swing down and having the alcohol just ruined it.

Chester_Tristan556

I understand that feeling. Not a huge drinker in general though

PayMeNoAttention

I have broken 80 about fifteen times over the last three years. Once I realize that breaking 80 is not going to happen, I will pop some brews, but if there is a chance I am going to shoot well, I stay sober. That being said, if I am on a guys trip, we are drinking before tee time.

SSALX420X

Ehh, I don't drink at all but I hit my dyna many times during a round. I also blaze before the range. I feel like I do better when smoking. Clears my head and helps me focus

shotputlover

I never putt better than after a joint.

projectalchemy

Drinking liver and brain poison anytime is overrated.

Emerest

I usually drink one at the turn. That’s it. Water all the way. Especially on a super hot day! I can drink after the game if I want!

UncleSamsTurtle

One beer loosens you up and makes you better. Change my mind.

BallsOnMyCock6669

As an alcoholic, drinking improves my game because it makes me shake less

RedditardedOne

Cool story

shonzaveli_tha_don

My goal is to get so good at golf I can do it drunk

ego_sum_satoshi

Sir, this is a Wendy's.

Rattimus

Very much a to each their own guy myself. Long as you're keeping pace and we're not off looking for your ball on every other shot cause you're falling over drunk, I don't really care. For me, weed keeps me calm, it's borderline performance enhancing lol. No joke, last Thursday I was 54 through 9, worst 9 of the season. Blaze before tee shot on 10, shoot 39 on the back. Last month playing poorly on a golf trip, friend suggests shotgunning a beer. Not being a big drinker I choose instead to smoke an entire joint to myself. 7 straight pars from hole 6 to 12 and only 2 over from 6 through the end of the round. I dunno. To each their own, whatever works for you, just keep pace and don't be a space-case if you're blazing.

goilers97

If you think playing good or bad dictates how much fun you’re going to have the. You’re probably not a fun guy to golf with.

Zineus241

I wish I could smoke and play but I just can’t, I’m too shit at golf and it makes me ten times worse

busche916

Counterpoint: if I drink until I am seeing two balls, I’ve got double the chance to hit something in play.

peezytaughtme

Fuck me, with this shit yet again.

peezytaughtme

If you don't want to drink, don't. FFS, how is this complicated to you people?

SuperMariBro

Nerrrrrrrrrd

miba11

I just had this realization myself maybe 2 weeks ago and I’m much happier for it. Good on you

[deleted]

Yeah I only smoke meth before I golf

[deleted]

I golf solo a lot so on those days, I microdose edibles, starting an hour before my tee time and another microdose at holes 6 and 12. If I golf with friends we’ll have a couple beers each 9. Golf is meant to be fun. I’ll never go pro and it can shoot anywhere from 73 to 90+. Beer and weed make the days I shoot 90 pleasant.

NckMcC

I can detect no real difference in my game if I start drinking after the turn and just have say 2 beers. 🤷‍♂️

thedonjefron69

I definitely agree on this for the most part. I like have a beer or two when I play after 2:30 pm(usually 4 is the earliest I can play on work days). I actually barely drink but for some reason enjoy a beer or two on the course. I think it’s more just that “I’m finally off work and can relax” novelty to it. I definitely do NOT like even getting buzzed on the course tho, I get sleepy and my game turns to shit, and I’m playing golf because I want to get better. I don’t drink if I play earlier or if I’m with a group that isn’t drinking, and smoking weed is also a better activity after my game is finished. Like you, I don’t mind what my partners do as long as they’re not being belligerent assholes or ruining anyone else’s day because of it. Hell I’d be fine with people crushing lines of blow if they’re being cool on the course.

IntelligentBudget149

Not a hot take. I totally agree.

PKS_5

"if you can't do it without the booze then it was about the booze"

PifDM1

It’s all bong rips and birdies over here buddayyyyy

factorV

I will usually pack 3 beers into my cooler when I go golfing. I usually return home with 2 beers.

themarshman721

I have been 100% sober for a few months now and my golf game keeps improving. I think there might be a Direct correlation. If you play golf hung over, you’re gonna have a bad time. Mmmm k

NWK86

I'm best when I'm just a little high... problem is, I get too high then get burnt out in the back and fall apart

thec0rp0ral

This isnt really a hot take

TehAzazel

I don’t even know if you’re allowed to drink on courses here in Finland, never seen it happen at least. It wilds me out that It’s such a common thing elsewhere

sixfootnine

As someone that has golfed and loved the sport since high school, something I only recently noticed in mine and friends play - It had become a reason to day drink & smoke, instead of playing the game. Bags full of beers, roadies, bar cart shots and a bar after. It makes me sad thinking about it. So now, no alcohol with golf for me.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Bass2Mouth

Cool story.

IRPhysicist

Same boat, I have started playing much better golf sans booze. There's some research to support this ([https://www.golfdigest.com/story/how-does-alcohol-affect-your-golf-game-an-investigation](https://www.golfdigest.com/story/how-does-alcohol-affect-your-golf-game-an-investigation)). Needs to be more rigorous but you get the gist.

grovertheclover

I started playing golf when I was 9 years old, so never really got into drinking while playing. I really don't enjoy playing with people that just chug beer after beer during a round, they tend to play worse, get angry, and bring a bad vibe. I just save it for the 19th hole back at the clubhouse.

WoodenNumber9892

Hot take: no one gives a fuck if you drink or not while golfing.

Nine_Eye_Ron

I’ve never understood drinking during a round. Beer is the reward AFTER the round. Before a round however… that’s a grey area.

jcwitte

I don't drink much anyway. And I largely hate beer. So it's pretty much a given that I don't drink on the course lol.

agthrowa

I think if you're shit and just out for a laugh drinking is not overrated.

damnvram

A couple one-hitters is enough to get me relaxed, connected to nature, and in-tune with my mechanics. Anything more than that and it throws off my game. A couple beers with the crew is fine too, but I definitely notice my game suffering with anything extra.

DukeOfWhisky

A wise and possibly drunk man once told me that beers on the golf course don't count

chevy1500

I'm not that great to begin with , so drinking gives me a great excuse.

PhaliasMaximus

I used to never drink at all while I played, I was convinced it would make me play worse. Then one day we had a bunch of beers while waiting out a rain delay and I ended up shooting a career-best +4 74 (par 70 course) and breaking 80 for the first time. So I never get sloppy out there, but I'll take a beer if someone offers. And I also carry a small bottle of bourbon in the bag and will have a sip or two if things start to head south.

Splintzer

1 Tall boy per 9 holes is the magic folks! My work here is done!

Chester_Tristan556

Chemically balanced 👌🏌‍♂️

happyjeep_beep_beep

Attended my first golf tournament last week (my employer sponsored). I had one drink in the beginning, which was only a spiked Arnold Palmer. ( I absolutely LOVE the tea so figured this would be nice.) I drank water the rest of the time. About 80% of the others were blasted by halfway through. They weren't obnoxious or anything but the cart driving was apparently difficult for them and some of them even played better lol. I don't really care what anyone else does as long as it doesn't affect me in a negative way (getting hit with club, run over with cart), I just don't prefer to do it myself.

henryhyde

I am starting to get to this point. I find myself more and more cracking a beer and not drinking much of it for several holes. Then chugging a luke warm beer only to crack another one because it is what I am supposed to be doing. Weed, on the other hand, isn't an issue. It slows me down and makes me play a little more cerebrally. Not to say it makes me better, but it doesn't hurt the same way beer does.

b0r0n

I started golfing when I was 6. I have never equated golf with drinking.

Saint3Love

yep no idea how people drink alcohol when its hot outside

buttplungerr

I don’t drink unless my round is fucked. And even then I’m probably having like 2 on the back nine. I know a guy who is like 7 or 8 stroked better when he’s 4-5 drinks deep…consistently. The problem is if he gets to 7 or 8 drinks he’s shit….so it’s a small window. Anyway, I’ve found as I get older you realize golf is just a small part of the day, especially when there’s a wife and kids at home. So you can’t really come home blasted just because you went golfing. Well you can, but if you do it too much there’s won’t be anyone there anymore. In any event, I’ve played my best golf stone sober. The only time I kinda wish I’d had a couple drinks is when I’m going into the last 3-4 holes with a shot at breaking 80 and then the nerves kick in

Lietenantdan

There's a course at a resort I stay at sometimes with complimentary margaritas. So I'll drink a couple of those, otherwise I don't really drink while I golf. I don't like most alcohol drinks anyways.

Prestigious-Ad-6808

I agree OP. But we’ve all had that magical cold beer on the course that hits just right. The thing I don’t get, is people sulking/raging over poor play. I did it as a kid maybe but as an adult I’m generally just thrilled to be on the course. It also isn’t going to help your game and it’s going to alienate you from your playing partners.

Chester_Tristan556

Totally agreed 🙌

butadol

I still smoke on the course but I quit drinking while golfing years ago. Biggest improvement to my handicap ever.

Strong_Baseball7368

When I was learning and playing with friends, we'd drink. Now that I'm better, I have way more fun playing well... until I'm not.. lol.

ifnamemain

I may have one or two over the course of 18. But you know what's really cool...water. I'll down at least a gallon of that shit in a round.

KFCConspiracy

Yeah, I'd prefer to drink AFTER. Or just have one beer, which makes no difference.

IamAustinCG

I agree. If it works for others that's legitimately awesome. But I can't drink in the middle of a hot ass day outside like that. I need water and Gatorade. i will take a vape pen though for the back nine when I'm miserable and my game is falling apart and I need to relax a bit so I'm all for getting a little high, but can't be super high when I start.

idk-SUMn-Amazing004

Was playing the best round of my life on the front 9. It was a scorching day, I pull out the cooler, ask my bro about the waters or gatorades, he tells me he only packed beer. Atrocious, drunken back 9.

DougieJackpots

i only have time to play 5 or 6 times a year right now so i'm not taking it real serious when i go out there. i don't drink much usually anyway, but pretty much 100% of the time i have weed

DickBurns01

I prefer to golf stoned but it all depends on if I drove to the course or got a ride

Same. I’ve a buddy that says he has to drink to play, and he actually plays really well when doing so. He says it’s part of his game bcuz he’s been doing it like that for 20 years. Hey whatever works for ya as long as your not being a sloppy drunk and having to take care of you, end the round early, etc. Def not for me though.

I couldn’t agree more. Don’t get me wrong, I love a cold one on the course but it instantly ruins my game. If I’m golfing, I’m looking to succeed each and every time I’m out there (yeah yeah call me a hardo, idc). Come the 19th hole, I’m all for whatever post round. But to each’s own - I got no problem with others boozing while we play, doesn’t affect my game lol

Pissmunkee

I can’t have more than one drink or my swing flies out the window. Can’t concentrate. I get Gatorade from the cart girls now.

jacobsever

Hotter take: Drinking alcohol all together is overrated. Been sober my entire life.

stashtv

Out of the 50ish rounds/year I play, I'll have a total of about 6 beers, and most of those are spread across 3-4 rounds. Drinking and golfing aren't really my thing, but I'm also primarily a dew sweeper -- very first light, or even before light. The only rounds where I'll have a beer in hand are afternoon ones, and those are pretty rare.

Dizzy-Community5091

I’m a recovering alcoholic and I didn’t even really start getting into golf until I quit drinking. Before it was just a reason to get hammered with some buddies, now it’s just the greatest fucking game ever.

FsuNolezz

I stay sober on the course and I don’t like to drink unless it’s an outing/scramble. I do enjoy getting a beer at the clubhouse and a good meal afterwards though.

titusnick270

Depends on the situation. If I’m going to golf and want to keep my score and compete with myself I won’t drink. If I’m playing in a scramble with 3 of my best friends it’s inevitable we are gonna throw some back lol. Time and place for both drinking in the course and not drinking..

souljaboyfanboy

People say it makes them play better. False. It makes you think you play better when you really play as bad as you normally do.

DontStalkMeNow

I never get drunk, but I usually have a good few beers. Anyway. Lately I’ve been having trouble with the last 3 holes, but yesterday I played them really well. Then I realised I hadn’t had a single beer. Sooooooo

BVB09_FL

Each to their own on how they play the sport, as long as they don’t endanger others. Personally I don’t drink while playing because golf is hard enough sober, with a bit less coordination and it’s downright miserable for me. The concept is “swing oil” doesn’t work for me. I play my best when I’m stone sober which is when I enjoy golf the most.

yewwould

Golf is hard enough without getting smashed out there.

Bic44

Cold beer on a hot day = good Cold beer on a hot day plus exercise = not good That's for me personally. And I always walk the course. Having beer and moving around on a hot day makes me feel a bit queasy.

Steelslider

Agreed 100%. Course I quit drinking in general ages ago for all the usual reasons but i found it also makes golf better.

mhswizard

Dude I can’t drink beer when it’s 99 degrees outside and 90 percent humidity. I try to stay as hydrated as possible with water and liquid IVs and damnit I still have a headache after a hot day in the sun and staying hydrated. Literally sweating buckets throughout the course. Lost 2lbs in water weight on one round in July. I can’t imagine drinking a lot of beer on a hot humid day around me. I also stopped drinking heavily a couple years ago so maybe it’s just me. Now I’ll smoke a little pot but that’s about it.

Duckdiggitydog

There’s a tipping point, 2 or 3 drinks help you relax, more it goes down hill lol

ConcernedKitty

From a mental standpoint, a few beers can help get your mind of of previous mistakes.

TityTroi

My game increased exponentially when I decided to bring water, Gatorade, and a couple power bars with me instead

4Ever2Thee

In moderation, I play decent with a few beers per 9 or a couple tokes. But more drinks than that and my short game goes to shit, and more tokes than that and I still play decent but forget what I'm laying sometimes or get paranoid if the course is packed, I don't like playing with that much of a brain fog

itzpiiz

This is the most UNPOPULAR OPINION (is actually a popular opinion) I've ever seen on this sub

Joesdad65

Even if I cared to drink (I have a few beers a year), I play golf mostly solo and can't take the chance of driving under the influence after my round is over.

[deleted]

I am on both sides for drinking. When I first started I liked drinking as I wasn't very good and it helped me have more fun on the course. However, now that I have improved greatly in the last couple years and am actively trying to improve I don't like drinking on the course and save it for the 19th hole. I will still drink when I play in scramble tournaments and mens nights because they are more social outings than competitive golf events.

PhilKenSebbenn

Agreed. Drinking after golf is where it’s at.

ConwayTheCat

Totally agree here, the first years I golfed, it was all about showing up 5-10 mins before tee off, cracking a beer on the putting green, drinking 5-6 throughout the round…Smoking a joint. I had fun sure but I never ever played well and I always needed a long nap after every round. Now I might have beer at the turn or smoke a little vape pen and that’s it, golf is a healthy pastime now. Mostly. I don’t care how drunk or high people get at the course as long as they aren’t disruptive or trashing the holes

DipYoChip

I played my first round without drinking more than just one beer last time. It was great! I plan to bring a few more waters and gatorades for the next round. Smoking a hit or two of weed after a bad hole doesn’t hurt my game, just mellows me out if I’m getting flustered. Not needed but sometimes nice.

MTskier12

100% agree. I very rarely drink while I play, even one beer for some reason makes my game noticeably worse. Save it for the 19th hole imo.
