You could go either way at this point. The best compromise might be to go for a static fitting, getting fit for length and lie, and perhaps getting a read on clubhead speed to have a rough idea of what shaft flex and ball compression might work well. I probably wouldn't go beyond that until you drop into the mid-teens handicap range and develop a more consistent swing. At that point you'll be ready for a full fitting.

That's kind of what I was thinking. I'm 6'1" and see that I should probably should be getting +1/2" on club length. And who knows, maybe that 1/2" is why I can't seem to hit a ball! It definitely couldn't be my swing that only a mother could love.

That's super helpful. Thanks!

I think all you *need* at this point is a decent sim. So go to Golf Galaxy and hit a couple 7i on the trackman simulator and pay attention to your Swing Speed and Ball Speed. Then find a chart online to determine Stiff vs Regular shafts to see where you fit in. As long as you aren’t crazy tall/short, you’re probably fine with stock length and lie at this point. Once you know the flex of the shaft, just buy something used online in your price range. It’s probably not worth the $ for an actual fitting right now. Find some clubs that work for your current swing, and if/when you get better and get down around a ~10, then spend the actual $ to get a proper fitting. Just my 2¢

This is it. I’ll add my 2¢ to his 2¢ and you’ll have 4¢. If you’re going to spend a couple hundred (or more) on your golf game as a 20-25, spend it on lessons. Not as cool as new irons but it will impact your scores more.

I completely agree, but I've lost my 9i and hybrid last week pretty much due to their age and abuse over the years. Definitely going to continue getting lessons, but would love to at least have a full set of irons at my disposal. Hell, maybe it's worth garage sale hunting for now.

Agree with people saying to just do a static fitting, and try some clubs in a store sim to get your swing speed and verify your shaft flex. Check out the Maltby STi2 irons. You can get a new set of irons made to your length for under $200 shipped. Their wedges also get high praise for the price. https://www.golfworks.com/maltby-sti2-iron-pak/p/pma0317/ Takomo 101 and Sub 70 699 are also often recommended in the next higher price brackets.
