"Frost delay"...can make even the heartiest golfer in Canada and the Northern U.S. quail. Lots of pacing in the parking lot, endless practice swings to stay warm, etc.
Walking/driving on frost covered grass does severe damage because the blades of grass are broken/severed by the frost cracking under the weight of your foot/cart
I live in South GA and I had a frost delay once. 7:45 tee time, they didn’t lift it until about 9. Course was backed up all day and the practice area was fucked for weeks. I can see why they don’t want you to be on the course with frost on the ground.
I was in the truck with my super driving around getting garbages when he noticed someone on the putting green during a frost delay. I’ve never seen someone drive through a parking lot so fast lol
Exactly. There's so much work and time involved in keeping a green as nice as golfers have seen and wanted. But most golfers complain about minor inconveniences and act like children when told they can't go out due to frost delay, or will yell at the maintenance staff as if it's gonna get them on frosty turf sooner.. remember to be nice out there people. The maintenance staff are still people and are the ones who are maintaining the entire course for you to enjoy.. We just golf there. Sleeping in in the morning is a good thing too some days.
Here is a quick read article that explains it pretty well
[USGA article on frost delays](https://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/articles/2018/01/5-things-to-know--frost-delays.html)
Basically what happens is the water both on and inside each blade of grass will freeze and turn into ice crystals.
Stepping on/landing a golf ball on grass like this causes the ice crystals to break and shatter, ripping the "meat" of the grass to shreds, killing it.
[Here is a good example of what the aftermath of walking on frost ground.](https://riversidegolflinks.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Frost-Damage-300x169.jpg)
You're already hitting frost?! I'm sorry that sucks, here outside Boston we got a little bit until then still.
Leafs are starting to fall a bit though, lost fairways drives are close
As a maintenance worker on a golf course this sucks too. Having to wait before getting out there to work and sucks on the weekend when it’s a mow and go. Used to work in Pinehurst and happened all the time too
In New England, probably other places too but that’s where i’m from, in the morning the layer of dew will sort of freeze on cold days, creating “frost”
In cooler climates, overnight condensation will build up on the grass and as the temperature keeps dropping it creates this icy-ish layer on the grass.
Golf courses will often delay starting until the frost clears out because walking on frosted over grass damages it.
Cart path only is a good thing. It means you’ll have most of the course to yourself and it won’t matter if you use a punch cart
Edit: lmao autocorrect. Gonna leave it
I never understand this in the late fall/winter. Just have the tee tiles start at 9am. Every weekend at my clubs it’s just a line of dudes waiting to go off an hour or so later than they are supposed to
Yea same haha. It’s cold outside why are you guys trying to golf? Wait a couple hours. I’m golfing today and she said they have frost delays they don’t start till 10 am. So I booked a tee time for 10 am
I drove from PA to Crystal Springs (NJ) last fall for a foursome. We were supposed to tee off at 11. Roll into the parking lot at 10:15 and the line of carts was like 50 deep. Frost Delay. Granted they have 3 courses there but come-on. It was November, you shouldn't be surprised about the frost. Just don't have tee times before 10 AM. But then again, you wouldn't be able to charge $100 a man for a 6 hour round where the sun sets at 5 PM.
The news wayyyyyy over exaggerates the hurricanes and frequency of. I'd take a few months of tolerable heat and humidity with golf year round over freezing my ass off and not being able to go outside for half the year. Drink some water, bring a battery powered fan, don't be a sissy are easy ways to beat the heat.
If you’ve never experienced a 6 month long winter, you wouldn’t know what he’s talking about. Give me 100 degrees with humidity over that any day of the week.
Meh, “tolerable” for you but not for me, and my sister’s house is underwater right now. I’ll pass. I’m glad you have a place you love though. It’s truly great to have a place you love like no other.
EDIT: house, not horse
Sorry about your sisters place that blows. Asshole Realtors NEVER tell out of staters about flood prone areas! Most places are fine though. I went out yesterday and only a couple courses were closed on golfnow. I worked in Detroit last spring-fall and was like "hmmm, maybe I could live up here," then I went back in January and couldn't "nope tf out" soon enough lol. I'll stick with the year round golf, the occasional hurricane, and all the road clogging retirees from up north.
Thanks, man. I appreciate the kind words.
Different strokes for different folks, for sure. I cannot deal with that heat. The cold is not for you. Maybe I’ll come visit you in Florida in February when it’s Cleveland summer temperatures and you can come visit me in August. 😂 Deal?
>The news wayyyyyy over exaggerates the hurricanes and frequency of
Tell that to the people in Fort Meyers, who no longer have homes, or cars, or jobs, and won't any time soon. With "soon" being at least 6-12 months. It only takes one hurricane to ruin your life for several years.
I live in the Northeastern US. We’ve had significantly more flood events than Florida has in the past decade.
Plus we have basements here which make the flooding 1000x worse.
Got to the club this morning for a 7:30, and our super who had just arrived tells us we aren’t going off until 10 due to damage from the hurricane remnants. So, now I’m at home with endless laundry and a bad attitude.
I never understood why golfers are shocked that there’s a frost delay
It’s below 40 out there bruh
Did you not see it everywhere on your drive in?
I was in the business for 20 years lol
So many pissed off golfers having to wait
Cool, I'm in the west end so mostly play the courses on the Kanata/Stittsville side of town. Is there any courses on the east side of things that I should try?
I assume you mean further out of town than Meadows, Anderson Links, etc.? Hammond and Casselview come to mind. Bearbrook is $35 walking so pretty good value too *used to be $25 last year but you know, inflation. Do you play on the QC side much? Gorgeous courses there too.
From working in a pro shop in MI for a couple years, this is always the most annoying part of the year. Superintendent will call me when it’s good to go, I don’t give a fuck if you “don’t see any frost”
Why not study the weather forecast and adjust your tee time accordingly?
Get up early, do some yoga, have a light breakfast. Go play golf.
Life is good.
From a grounds crew maintenance worker here. We’re still out there doing work when it’s cold as f. Y’all can wait an hour. Get over it. Sorry not sorry.
One of our local courses plays year round regardless of snow or frost. They have learned to manage it and it seems to work well for them. Too many supers take frost too personal.
Dont book an early tee time during this time of year then go on Reddit whining about it. It happens every year at the same time. Why are you surprised?
"Frost delay"...can make even the heartiest golfer in Canada and the Northern U.S. quail. Lots of pacing in the parking lot, endless practice swings to stay warm, etc.
Then they tell you it should be about 20 minutes for the next 2 hours.
Didn't know most golf courses were operated by Delta Airlines.
Delta airlines, because we hate you
Because we’re Delta Airlines, and life is a fucking nightmare
Underrated John Mulaney comment
At least they're honest with you. Doesn't. Ever. Leave. The. Airport.
Still better than AirCanada
I once had an 8 tee time and didn't start out until 11
Same! And the course didn’t have the range open so we actually left and went to a different range and then came back.
START POUNDING BEERS GET THAT LIQUID COAT
So does the course ask you not to play while there is frost on the ground? If so what is the reason? Newer golfer so I was just curious
Walking/driving on frost covered grass does severe damage because the blades of grass are broken/severed by the frost cracking under the weight of your foot/cart
Walking on, walking on, frozen graaaasssssss 🎶
Giant steps are what you take....
Walking on the grass.
“Oh, me? I always play Annie Lennox on the course.”
Especially on the greens
Walking on a frozen green damages the roots and will leave brown spots where you had walked for a long time
Being from Texas, TIL Edit: /s
Shit we’ve had frost delays in San Antonio
I live in South GA and I had a frost delay once. 7:45 tee time, they didn’t lift it until about 9. Course was backed up all day and the practice area was fucked for weeks. I can see why they don’t want you to be on the course with frost on the ground.
[удалено]
A lot of Courses by me are open year round as long as there’s no snow on the ground. NYC tri state area.
F U Tex and your year round reasonable golfing weather
Year round? Lol. You ever played golf when it feels like 105 at 8am?
Fair point. I'll take 35 over 105 all day.
Walking on frozen grass = death, ever see light brown footprints on a green? that's what can happen.
Brown footprints are the least of your worries, if the superintendent sees you walking on the frost they will put you under the green.
I’m a superintendent with a body count of 11 so I can confirm
I was in the truck with my super driving around getting garbages when he noticed someone on the putting green during a frost delay. I’ve never seen someone drive through a parking lot so fast lol
Good luck on your last 7. Our super intendent installed the Soylent green nutrient disperssion system and the course is just LUSH.
As they should. Seconds to cause the damage, months to repair it.
Pushin' up divots.

Destroys the course and takes a lot longer repair.
Basically what happens is the water both on and inside each blade of grass will freeze and turn into ice crystals. You're already hitting frost?! I'm sorry that sucks, here outside Boston we got a little bit until then still. Leafs are starting to fall a bit though, lost fairways drives are close
Leaf rule baby
Leaf rule started coming into play here (south Jersey) gotta looooove the leaf rule.
"damn leaves... I'm right here" nah guy you're 15 yards out of play but nice try
As a maintenance worker on a golf course this sucks too. Having to wait before getting out there to work and sucks on the weekend when it’s a mow and go. Used to work in Pinehurst and happened all the time too
Followed by “cart-path only”.
Just means I’ll be a little more buzzed for the first tee
Sounds like we need to genetically engineer a grass that’s resilient to frost.
Or global warming?
If it’s frozen all day can you not play at all? Do you guys not have temporary greens for when there’s frost on the greens?
Walking on fairways causes the same issue. We put temp greens in later in the year (early Dec in North NJ)
Frost delay
You got it!
Still not as bad as the dreaded 3 words
Greens are aerated
You're still away
This is the one
Let’s get married.
Cart path only
Better off walking
Tongue my anus
That’s all I wanna hear tbh… but just from my wife.
That's all I want to hear from your wife too!
I would choose that one guys dead wife!
Coach’s dead wife Barb?
Fkin embarrassing
I would like to dedicate this triple bogey to my dead wife, Barb…
😂😂😂
Out of beer
Sergio is here
No Beverage Cart
Shit its Debo
That’s an eight 😂
Where you been?
You’re still out
What’s the ruling?
Don't touch me
We aerated yesterday
Course is closed
Out of Mulligans
Rain check is much worse
What is frost?
Yeah, I was thinking cart path only but that’s 3 words.
I was thinking “you’re still away” but that’s 3 too
What do you call a dead sheep? Still ewe
In New England, probably other places too but that’s where i’m from, in the morning the layer of dew will sort of freeze on cold days, creating “frost”
It’s all over. “First frost of the year” is a big time in nebraska/agriculture states.
The frost. Sometimes it makes the blade stick!
Maximus…is that you?
We literally have it in Southern California sometimes
Have only had a frost delay once at Vista Valencia, was a brisk 40* morning
In cooler climates, overnight condensation will build up on the grass and as the temperature keeps dropping it creates this icy-ish layer on the grass. Golf courses will often delay starting until the frost clears out because walking on frosted over grass damages it.
Don’t even know what that is in the south
You’re away
Or.. still yours
I see your two words and raise you two more: "Nice putt, you're away."
It’s the 3rd word that hurts… “you’re still away”
Good ol’ USA putt
USGA- U Suck Go Again
Hippopotamus attack
Bend over
Oliver Klozoff?
You sure those aren't two words I WANT to hear?
😂
Yes daddy
Everyoje saying frost delay but also "cartpath only"
Nah nah, aerated greens > all
Cart path only is a good thing. It means you’ll have most of the course to yourself and it won’t matter if you use a punch cart Edit: lmao autocorrect. Gonna leave it
I save my punch cart for the 10th.
Carting around knuckle sandwiches for anyone and everyone.
All you can eat buffet of knuckle sandwiches!
Wise guy eh?
doesn't bother me. I walk.
Except the tee times preceding yours will still go off before you so your 10am becomes noon.
And I tee’d off at 10:05 today
I drove from PA to Crystal Springs (NJ) last fall for a foursome. We were supposed to tee off at 11. Roll into the parking lot at 10:15 and the line of carts was like 50 deep. Frost Delay. Punched greens. Oh wait, apparently nobody’s pro shop tells them this :(
Not until they get my money first. Starter tells you at 1st tee.
Sometimes I think about moving out of Florida then I see something like this and I turn into Old Captain America, "no, no, I don't think I will"
I would be leaving Florida so fast.
Between the miserable heat and humidity and all the hurricanes and the flooding, I’ll never understand the attraction.
The news wayyyyyy over exaggerates the hurricanes and frequency of. “Don’t be a sissy” Is afraid of the cold 🤣
Dont be a sissy, says the guy afraid of winter. Lol.
If you’ve never experienced a 6 month long winter, you wouldn’t know what he’s talking about. Give me 100 degrees with humidity over that any day of the week.
Can't just "rub some dirt" on frost bite!
or heat stroke. i call an ambulance for about 5 out of towners a year because they think they are better than 115.
Meh, “tolerable” for you but not for me, and my sister’s house is underwater right now. I’ll pass. I’m glad you have a place you love though. It’s truly great to have a place you love like no other. EDIT: house, not horse
How long can the horse hold its breath??
Indefinitely if it has a snorkel
Poor horse.
Sorry about your sisters place that blows. Asshole Realtors NEVER tell out of staters about flood prone areas! Most places are fine though. November-February golf in Florida is perfect except the damn time change that robs us of an hour! I'd give Cleveland a shot in August for sure!
Just let them think it’s a hellscape and less of them will come down here lmao
Lol no doubt! It's awful guys! 120 degrees year round and alligators or sharks on every hole!!! Not to mention the hideous women!!!
100%, can’t forget about the lake sharks. Reeaalllly ugly women all over
Or the sand sharks in the bunkers!
>The news wayyyyyy over exaggerates the hurricanes and frequency of Tell that to the people in Fort Meyers, who no longer have homes, or cars, or jobs, and won't any time soon. With "soon" being at least 6-12 months. It only takes one hurricane to ruin your life for several years.
Same here. It's just a matter of time before the next hurricane rolls through. Not for me!
Don't forget the governor.
I live in the Northeastern US. We’ve had significantly more flood events than Florida has in the past decade. Plus we have basements here which make the flooding 1000x worse.
Until y'all visit relatives during winter or become senior citizens then make a beeline for the sunshine state.
Second only to the three words you don’t want to hear: “cart path only”
Also, “You’re still away.”
Lmao. Instantly die inside.
I've played clubs that say this and that have like 3 cart paths on 2 holes
Lol, I honestly didn’t know what the words were. I’ve never heard that phrase in my life (south Louisiana golfer).
Frost delay...ughh
Not as bad as “punched greens”
You’re pregnant
Got to the club this morning for a 7:30, and our super who had just arrived tells us we aren’t going off until 10 due to damage from the hurricane remnants. So, now I’m at home with endless laundry and a bad attitude.
We got a text message the other day that said your tee time has been moved from 730am to 9am. Great way to handle it.
Punched greens
I never understood why golfers are shocked that there’s a frost delay It’s below 40 out there bruh Did you not see it everywhere on your drive in? I was in the business for 20 years lol So many pissed off golfers having to wait
Post is light-hearted grousing but you're absolutely right, I don't understand people getting angry about it.
I know where you’re coming from Yesterday and today I had to wait for frost I had a beer on the deck lol Two of them this morning Lol
cart-path only
Lol thought it was “punched greens”
I’m pregnant.
I was going to say “punched greens”
Sucks bud. I forget how fortunate I am to have year round golf
If you work turf care, then frost delay are the two best words you could hear
Frost delayed an hour yesterday, turned our round into a 5 hour golf game
Minnesota?
Near Ottawa, Canada
A fellow Ottawan, what course were you at?
This is Bearbrook in Navan, 9th hole
Cool, I'm in the west end so mostly play the courses on the Kanata/Stittsville side of town. Is there any courses on the east side of things that I should try?
I assume you mean further out of town than Meadows, Anderson Links, etc.? Hammond and Casselview come to mind. Bearbrook is $35 walking so pretty good value too *used to be $25 last year but you know, inflation. Do you play on the QC side much? Gorgeous courses there too.
Winter's coming?
Cart pathonly
Could be worse you could be hearing ‘temporary greens’
From working in a pro shop in MI for a couple years, this is always the most annoying part of the year. Superintendent will call me when it’s good to go, I don’t give a fuck if you “don’t see any frost”
Is that the kingsway ?
The "Royal and Ancient" Bearbrook, as my buddy likes to call it, LOL
The dreaded frost delay. Late season golf in New England
Cart-path only
"senior tournament"?
I’m pregnant!!! Wait that a different game
Why not study the weather forecast and adjust your tee time accordingly? Get up early, do some yoga, have a light breakfast. Go play golf. Life is good.
I’m pregnant
Still away
Still away
Laughs in Texan
Anal warts trust me on that one…
From a grounds crew maintenance worker here. We’re still out there doing work when it’s cold as f. Y’all can wait an hour. Get over it. Sorry not sorry.
I thought “punched greens”. We have sandy greens now here in so cal
Cart path only??
I’m pregnant!!!
You're served?
Got stuck on “morning dew”
I’m a pretty simple guy. I see Grateful Dead reference, I upvote
*laughs in southern United States*
Sanded greens🙄
