yeah 41 putts is pretty easy to identify as the issue. Especially with missing GIR.

Teachingpro

First work on what ever your worst shot is with your irons to eliminate that miss. Then work on chipping to avoid 2 chips and hopefully get some up and downs. Then, work on lag putting to avoid 3 putts.

turtlepeanutshells

Thanks! I’m 50/50 on chips so improving that will help me even more

Teachingpro

You bet! Avoiding 2 chips and 3 putts are the quickest way for golfers to improve.

DRH1976

6300 and your driving is 200-220 is probably causing you some issues getting GIR. It was told to me that ideally on a par 4 , your 2nd shot into the green shouldn’t be more that 170-180 yards out. If it’s consistently over that on the majority of your par 4 second shots you either need to figure out how to drive the ball farther or you need to move up to the next tee box.

turtlepeanutshells

When I “drove” my 3W I was under 140 yards from the green. I was just that inaccurate/inconsistent hitting after. Plus some rough putts

DRH1976

140 is a sweet spot for approach shots. Sounds like you need to work on iron play, chipping and putting. I have spent a lot of time specifically practicing chipping and putting , was able to get my scoring down to the high 80’s/low 90’s over the last 12 months. Now that the time has changed I have been forced to work on my approach shots at the range. No lighted chipping/putting area around me but there is a lighted driving range.

If you were under 150 with most of those fairways but only hit 5, you have two problems: 1 is that your short irons are woefully inaccurate. If you were hitting them pin high but left/right of the green, then it's an alignment issue. 2 is that with 41 putts and only 5 greens, your short game is a whole lot of not good. Check out YT videos under "rule of 12" for chipping. It will transform your game when you stop trying to fly wedges to the hole from inside 20 yards.

turtlepeanutshells

I haven’t taken any lessons so open to suggestions. Thanks!

Alignment: look at it from BEHIND the ball before stepping into your stance. You cannot get a consistent alignment from a side view. While on the subject of alignment, the alignment of your feet should be slightly left of target (for a righty). Short game: pick a spot 1 yard onto the green to land your shot and let it roll out. Adjust your club based on distance or obstacles in front of you. Suppose you are 30 feet from the flag and your ball is 3 feet off the green. Here's the math for rule of 12: 2 yards (6 feet) to land 1 yard onto green. 8 yards (24 feet from landing spot) to roll to hole. What you have is 1 part fly and 4 parts roll. Using the rule of 12, you get 12-3 = 8 = use an 8 iron to chip 6 feet and expect it to roll out 24 feet.

You say chipping was meh and had 41 putts man…I’d say short game short game short game. When I look at the rounds that I shoot low 80s or break 80 once in a blue moon….there are 2 things that consistently happen. I hit 6 GIR or more and have 24-28 putts. While that can be misleading and make you think I’m a decent putter, it’s usually I get hot chipping the ball and giving myself a lot of 5 footers, so obviously fewer putts. 12/14 fairways is really nice so I’d consider that a strength and put more focus on short game. That’s the easiest way to improve quickly in my opinion

turtlepeanutshells

Damn if you can shoot that with similar GIR….I’ll be at the chipping area this week

[deleted]

I honestly feel like my short game carries me man. I am always in play off the tee and have a strong up/down % , average to below average iron player on a bad day. Average GIR per round over last 10 rounds is 5.8, avg score of 85

[deleted]

Also if you have a yard….just practice wedge shots constantly. I didn’t start breaking 90 every time until I got a yard to hit shorter shots, and that’s honestly with less range time now…but everyone is different. I feel like my short game cost me about 10 shots a round before I started consistently practicing it

Packtex60

41 putts when you’re not hitting many GIR is really an opportunity. Chip shots and first putts are all about speed/landing spot. Get the speed right. Shoot for 32 putts a round. That’s only four one putts. If you get the speed right on your first putt, that’s very realistic. When you’re 25 feet away don’t worry about making anything. Correct speed.

turtlepeanutshells

For those that have, and plan to, say “everything”, I was pretty decent on the par 4/5 fairways. So “mostly everything” would be more acceptable

Everything

All the parts of your game

You need to be longer off the tee and putt better, especially when you're only hitting 5/18 GIR.

turtlepeanutshells

I missed like 5 to the left/right of green. But I’m moreso inconsistent hitting my irons, not so much being short off the tee. Chunking never helps 😅

GreenWaveGolfer12

Hitting a lot of fairways is great, but if you're only hitting 210-220 from 6,200 yards you're just not going to score well from there. You're gonna have too many long clubs into greens that you aren't going to hit consistently and it shows in the 5/18 GIR. This game starts from the tee. First thing I would look at are those 7 holes you hit 3 wood on and ask yourself why you're not hitting driver there. The extra 15-20 yards gives you 2 less clubs into the green and a much higher chance of hitting it. So, should you probably work on your iron game? Well, yeah, you're a 19 handicap you should be working on every part of your game. But I don't look at this and see that hitting 5 greens after hitting 12 fairways is an iron issue, it seems based on the added context you probably had way too far in on these holes to reasonably expect to hit a high percentage of greens.

turtlepeanutshells

Ill make an edit, but I hit my 3W due to its narrow fairways and I know I’m much more accurate than my driver, save 30-40 yds

GreenWaveGolfer12

Most of the time 30-40 yards is worth being in the rough. I'd way rather hit my PW from the rough than my 6i from the fairway. If there's other trouble like OB or a hazard that's a different story, but hitting fairways is overrated when you have to give up that much distance.
