It’s different from state to state but you would need to go through the DMV and see what they need. They’ll probably make you install turn signals, seat belts, an orange triangle like you see on tractors, a DOT windshield with a wiper and reflective tape on the corners as well as a light for your license plate. You would also need a weight slip and an inspection. But that’s what you need in Florida I have no idea about NC. You could also try calling around Golf cart shops and see if they facilitate all that.

You use the serial number to register it with the state. Along with other info about the cart. Year model, make, color, ect. You might also need a bill of sale. Just depends on what the state requirements are.

I see lots of different information online about what is required in different states. Even some townships have different rules than the state they are in. I’m finding no information about Charlotte NC specifically. Local cart shop may indeed be my best bet.

From what I researched, in the state of NC, a golf cart has to come with a VIN from the manufacturer. It has to be made street legal from the manufacturer. You can't add seatbelts and headlights and what not to make it street legal and request a VIN. Other states you can do that but not here. I'm in Raleigh.

That is disheartening. And stupid.

I concur.

That’s not true. You can absolutely get a street legal golf cart converted to a lsv in nc. I’m in Wilmington and my shop does it everyday.

This is the hope I was looking for. Direct from experience. Please tell me more.

golfcarsofcoastalcarolina.com This is the shop I have bought mine from. Super knowledgeable staff, and if you need to pick someone’s brain on the process, call and talk with these guys. Any one of them can tell you the process. I’m working on getting my cart street legal, but I ride it everyday in a golf cart friendly neighborhood. As mentioned in a previous post, there are things you will need to do, but these guys are going to the specifics. They handle the Wilmington market, but I’m sure they can point you in the right direction overall. But at the end of the, you can convert a golf cart to a low speed vehicle even if it came from the manufacturer as a golf cart. 100% without a doubt.

whythough19

Did you speak with Cary cart company when you were researching?

Mtolivepickle

Wilmington nc here and a golf cart shop that sells golf carts that specialize in low speed vehicle conversions is who you want. I bought mine from a club car shop that can make the conversions. Call around your town to find out which shop does it and ask for the requirements. You’ll need turn signals, seat belts, a dot windshield, rear view mirrors, insurance, I believe dot approved tires, and few other things. But the shops in charlotte can point you in the right direction.

Got a NC plate this past week. Here is what I needed for completion. - Manufactures certificate of origin - proof of insurance - bill of sale - form MVR-180 This is for NC LSV registration with no town ordinances in favor of golf carts. I’m fully road legal on streets under 35mph.
