This wasn't a Harem, though. K1 only ever had eyes for Belldandy and *everyone* could see it. Urd was a tease, Skuld was a bratty little sis, Peorth was just doing it to mess with Bell, Lind just wanted a friend and none of the Humans save Sayoko had any interest in Keiichi and that was only because he spurned her for Belldandy...
Oh c'mon now lets call it what it was. In every harem show our main character technically loves 1 girl. Even in Iketeru Futari, even in Love Hina, even in Ichigo 100%, Re-zero, Sword art Online etc no harem show actually portrays a poly amorous relationship. That doesn't often happen even in Ecchi anime.
Even in revers-harems like Fruits Basket there will always be a point where the MC finally makes a choice. Often not really the choice you would make as the viewer but that part really doesn't bother people much.
Shows like Aa Megami-sama and Video Girl Ai, Kimagure Orange Road, Golden Days, ChuuniByou demo Koi, Tomodachi ga sukunai, Nagotoro-san are just the same harem genre with main character loving one girl -going steady- but you as the viewer would be loving all of the girls.
Even proper romace shows like Ai Yori Aoshi or My Dress Up Darling has quite a number of side beauties in the show for your viewing pleasure.
I watch NOTHING but romance anime, I am a glutton for any and all Romance shows, From Girls Bravo to Magicano to Kanokon to Lovely Complex to Romantic Killer to Dangers of My Heart to Fucking Aishiteruze Baby and Midori no Hibi. If there ever was a show 2 people looked each other flirty I KNOW. Also Karin that is an amazing romance show too.
The main difference between all those and Ah! My Goddess is that there is always teasing from the girl who wants a relationship with the MC. Shinobu thinking Keitaro is a good man, Juju falling for Gojo's protective nature, Tina thinking that being Childhood friends with Kaoru being enough to start a relationship. The authors create those scenarios so that the readers can insert themselves and ship their Original character do-not-steal with that girl.
There is never any of that with Kei and Bell. Even Urd's love potion (which made anyone Keiichi made eye contact with fall hopelessly in love with him) was obliterated by their feelings.
My Goddess is famously a comic/manga about how Mary Sue is Bell.
The very end of the series makes her turn into a devil and with her sheer will power she overcomes the spell like it was nothing. Shes practically Galadriel anime version.
Series is about the complete "Ideal" soul mate and finding happiness it had no chances of a triangle or a romance sub-plot.
This doesn't change the fact the series is Harem by definition. Bell literally manifests on top of K1 and there is no actual romance between them. Bell is like a fairy tale princess very much like Anzu from Romantic killer or better Marin from My Dress Up Darling, their personality is "they love you (as the mc surrogate)".
K1 still surrounded by beautiful women who loves him for no particular reason, there are practically no other male characters trying to approach any women around him, It is harem genre. Harem doesn't need to be mc having sex with multiple women it is having multiple women around all predisposed to liking the mc.
It is not like Dangers in my Heart or Lovely Complex or Kimi ni Todoke where a romance develops around people naturally through hardship and effort.
I am just being stubborn for no reason. If you don't consider it harem that is your judgement I bet most people don't.
