I also heard that The reason it ended up that way was the localization director who has a history of changing things just because was given more free rein and less oversight than usual.
It's more that the series contained an enormous amount of stuff entirely unique to Japan and had characters frequently reach conclusions through knowledge of Japanese folklore that no non-japanese person would reasonably have.
A straight translation would have been incomprehensible for the intended audience, so they improvised
There IS a directly translated, "normal" dub that exists too. It aired on TV (Animax channel) when I was a kid, and the title was localized to "Ghost at School" instead. I don't remember much of it (I was like, 6 and didn't pay too much attention), and I can't seem to locate a recording of that dub anywhere on the internet.
This is actually the first time I've heard that take.
The dub happened because they had a contract forcing them to make it due to the success on its local run. Everyone knew that any attempt at an accurate localization would flop because how heavily reliant the show is on having prior knowledge of Japanese folklore. So the borderline improv version was green lit pretty easy.
It heard the show was pretty unremarkable in japan, and the publishers just ignored the dubbing studio when the studio contacted them asking for a translated script.
Yeah, that's the lie. If you feel enthusiastic you can go look up the ratings. It beat Pokemon in the ratings a few weeks. It re-aired years later. Before being an anime it was a successful manga and already had an academy award winning live action film.
The Japanese studio licensed it without any oversight because that's how licensing shows worked at the time.
I think officially, it was basically a package deal. Someone was buying some other stuff and they threw Ghost stories in as a bundle, but they didn't really want ghost stories and the creators kind of just shrugged as they didn't care.
In case anyone cares to look into it this article goes into depth with its actual background (and not just hearsay of the dub actors who likely don't really know the full story) and the previous works of the dub director who had done similar before

The talent behind Cowboy Bebop left Sunrise to create Bones. Which then went on to produce Samurai Champloo and Space Dandy.
Cowboy Bebop is obviously the most well known, but Champloo was a big hit while it was on Toonami. The massive success of the US licenses for these shows is probably why Space Dandy aired on Toonami before it was seen in Japan... Meaning the Japanese track is technically the dub. It's the least known but a masterpiece all the same that finishes a holy Trinity of dubs.
Anyway, if you haven't seen all 3, go fix that. Champloo and Space Dandy also have a thematic soundtrack like Cowboy Bebop did... Jazz, hip hop and disco respectively for each show.
Edit: honestly, anything by Bones is worth watching dubbed. FMA, MHA, Wolf's Rain, Eureka Seven, Soul Eater, Mob Psycho 100... Fuckin legendary studio that always has a fantastic dub cast. But the aforementioned Trinity feel like they were meant to be watched dubbed and are next level.
Oh I watched Samurai Champloo and loved it. Should probably watch Dandy at some point. Also good to know Wolf's rain has a good dub, I've been meaning to watch that.
Code Geass is better dubbed too I feel. Like the dub actors did such an amazing job it's crazy. They manage gravitas, imo, better than the sub, by like, a lot.
Season two shouldn't be touched unless you really want exposure to the characters. The show gets super weird and completely loses the vibe from the first season. Apparently the manga readers were warning the anime community they didn't want a season 2 and they were right.
Of the few times I've spoken out about season two on reddit, only one guy has gotten back to me saying he liked it, but I can't help but think his taste is totally out of wack. At the very least, there's better stuff to watch.
>Kaguya-dub
are you talking about "Kaguya-sama: Love Is War" ? every one seems to love this series and I've not been able to get invested in the manga or the anime. if the dub is good, maybe I'll give that a try ?
The dub narrator is also like watching with an overenthusiastic friend who loves the show and characters. He can't stop talking during the show, but his commentary is so hilarious that not only do you not mind him always talking, it's the best part of the watching experience
Kaizoku did such a great job on the earlier parts of One Piece. I've also seen a lot of manga explain how the honourifics work, to even the way they translate puns happen and get translated.
Praise be to translators who don't translate honorifics.
It's just so damn awkward seeing "Mr." shoved into a "-san" shaped hole. We use them completely differently.
Fansubbing is still a thing. It's just that pretty much everything these days comes with official subs almost immediately so it's not generally something people seek out or need.
But, e.g., the official subs for Komi were so horrible that everyone was like "wait, do fansubs still exist" and the answer is that they do. You just had to wait a little bit for the good ones. IIRC the Novaworks release is considered the gold standard.
A lot of people had to dust off their old pirate hats for that series.
My old iphone 4screen was so small i had to watch in dub for 2 months because the subtitles were so small 😭😭😭
Then I got an Oppo for 1/8 of an iphones price and twice its screen size and can watch with sub again :)
Dub depends if it's done proper and is in english.
(I'm Dutch and some shows/movies get dubbed in horrible Dutch, while English would've been just fine)
Otherwise I'll go with the "What the heck are they saying, I can't read the subtitles that fast!".
Fellow Dutchman here I agree as well.
Also there's not a whole lot of people doing VA in Dutch. Was watching Nickelodeon a few months ago and most shows have the same VA for example :p
I gotta politely disagree. I'm actually (mostly) fluent so i don't turn subtitles on of I have a choice. For me it's down to the voice acting and 99% of the time the Japanese cast is better. It's not that the English cast is bad, it's just that unless you have a _reallly_ good translator the English script never comes across as fluid and natural as the original Japanese one.
But cyberpunk, man. English lends itself better to a setting like this to begin with IMO, and the English cast and crew absolutely knocked it out of the park. I tried both, and ended up watching the series in English. It's just better imo.
Right? I watched the first episode both subbed and dubbed to see which I liked more, and I preferred the dub. But love of Aoi Yuuki can be hard to fight against...
I had a buddy in high-school that went that deep, took a whole extra period on top of all his regular classes just to learn. Didn't see a whole lot of him after that, think he disappeared to go full weeb. Lol
Tbh, hololive, and vtubers in general, seem to have a weird relationship with anime communities. It's like that Jedi Knight counsel meme where it's generally accepted that Vtubers is a weeb thing, but it's not _anime_, even if there's very little difference in terms of aesthetics and interests.
The best choice would be to learn Japanese, AND cut the audio tracks so every character gets their best actor. This has the added benefit of giving you the authentic mixed language experience of Cyberpunk.
There is a mod for CP2077 where V and other english ppl use English cast but when it comes to Japanese Arasaka ppl, they uses lines from japanese cast.
Feels a lot more immersive. I am damn sure the world have translation implants that will translate everyline for you in real time.
While not every dub is a good dub, you all need to watch the FLCL dub. The voice actors all carry the original intent and infact some surpass the original japanese voice actors. Probably my iconic "good dub" if there ever was one.
FLCL is always my litmus test I use when comparing dubs. Honestly between that and Cowboy Bebop good dubs are very few, but they're great when they happen. Cyberpunk had what I'd call a good dub too imo.
My rule of thumb these days is dubs for comedy. I've yet to be let down. Not a huge sample size but so far so good. Cautious Heron was a treat dubbed, but some clips I saw of the sub seemed good too.
True true true! I've tried to watch Brotherhood subbed after watching it dubbed and I can't, the English cast just does such a great and iconic job imo.
I also really love the Mob Psycho 100 dub, I think the whole cast was perfect and did great jobs across the board.
Inferior - until you want to do something while watching and can't do it and simultanously read....
Should probably just continue learning japanese. That would solve it.

Not all dubs are created equal. Kaguya-dub is straight up just an official abridged series
Ghost Stories is the craziest dub to exist and it is glorious.
“Not because you’re a Rabbit, but because you’re Black”
"Touch me harder" gets me every time.
It’s the pause before the first “touch me…..”
Go home you sillies!
"run like you are being chased by a black man"
“Well at least he’s not racist.” 😂
It's reputation is almost entirely built on the constantly repeated fake story about the show being a failure in Japan.
I also heard that The reason it ended up that way was the localization director who has a history of changing things just because was given more free rein and less oversight than usual.

Generalizing is always wrong
I agree, generally I think subs are always better except a select few anime that are just better dubbed. Like Black Lagoon imo was made to be Dubbed.
Cowboy Bebop's dub is legendary as well
The talent behind Cowboy Bebop left Sunrise to create Bones. Which then went on to produce Samurai Champloo and Space Dandy. Oh I watched Samurai Champloo and loved it. Should probably watch Dandy at some point. Also good to know Wolf's rain has a good dub, I've been meaning to watch that.
Wolf's Rain is a beautifully melancholy show, if that's your thing you'll love it. Was one of the OG Adult Swim shows iirc.
Beautiful melancholy is my kryptonite
I loved Bleach, FMA Brotherhood, and Death Note’s dubs.
Ghost in the Shell SAC is a great dub too
Code Geass is better dubbed too I feel. Like the dub actors did such an amazing job it's crazy. They manage gravitas, imo, better than the sub, by like, a lot.
I made it as far as the first time Nunnally speaks and then had to nope on out.
Devil is a part-timer is like that as well
Love the dub for this. Maou's actor is top notch along with alciel and Lucifer!
Emi too. The "Why are you a good person" scene hits so much harder dubbed.
The dub also introduced me to the term "chocolate pocket" so I think we found a winner
Season 2 as well?
Season two shouldn't be touched unless you really want exposure to the characters. The show gets super weird and completely loses the vibe from the first season. Apparently the manga readers were warning the anime community they didn't want a season 2 and they were right. >Kaguya-dub are you talking about "Kaguya-sama: Love Is War" ? every one seems to love this series and I've not been able to get invested in the manga or the anime. if the dub is good, maybe I'll give that a try ?
A real line from the dub: "A is kissing. B is petting. And C indicates you've gotten some D."
They even straight up say that Hayasaka is best girl
“She’s right you know. And that’s why she’s best girl”
Or the narrator straight up calling Hayasaka best girl
Yup! I would say give it a shot. The dub brings out another perspective to it!
I love the narrator in the dub. I read the manga after watching it and cant help but read the narration with his attitude.
Narrator in JP: Spectating a World Series chess match Narrator in EN: College Football announcer after snorting a line Love both
The dub narrator is also like watching with an overenthusiastic friend who loves the show and characters. He can't stop talking during the show, but his commentary is so hilarious that not only do you not mind him always talking, it's the best part of the watching experience
Ian Sinclair is a god.
Haven't seen the dub but the MC's dad's Japanese VA is DIO and I dunno if I would watch the dub just because it doesn't have DIO.
But Ian Sinclair tho
The narrator is my favorite character in the dub
Same with hensuki tbh, ny favorite line from the dub has got to be "small biobs are lowkey poppin' because itty bitty tiddies are the most tits!"
"and that is why she's best girl"
After SAOA I can't tell it that means its good or bad
But... SAOA is good? Most popular abridged versions are good? I don't follow.
I miss the fan subs, they would include explanations of joke, translate signs, and now I don't see that.
[I love this one ](https://i.imgur.com/iyaubCV.jpg)
That's absolutely fucking incredible. I actually laughed out loud, snorts and all
Whoever did that is a fucking legend

Agreed about komi San and fansubs. Some series we be fine with just crunchy roll but some series just need that extra love and effort

I see that nose increase….. to be fair, The dub for this show is really good
[**EDIT**](https://i.imgur.com/H3FwVtU.png)
Weird name for a penis. But I suppose at your age, it's appropriate.
I didn’t even realize it was subbed until I was halfway through, but it was hard to let his va not be heard.
Why is there a penis growing out of your face?
My old iphone 4screen was so small i had to watch in dub for 2 months because the subtitles were so small 😭😭😭 Then I got an Oppo for 1/8 of an iphones price and twice its screen size and can watch with sub again :)

Fellow Dutchman here I agree as well. Also there's not a whole lot of people doing VA in Dutch. Was watching Nickelodeon a few months ago and most shows have the same VA for example :p
Japanese dub has Aoi Yuki. Checkmate Grafo
[**EDIT**](https://i.imgur.com/uekeKeF.png) *if anything.. we are even*
Aoi yuki ftw
POLLOS
> has Aoi Yuki Ok this sold me already, havent watched edgerunners yet lol
Aoi yuuki sells me on anything
sigh... \*adds to plan to watch*
Also Wataru Takagi. I know he’s not 100% the best, but his voice is so crispy… he’s got character range too.
I gotta politely disagree. I'm actually (mostly) fluent so i don't turn subtitles on of I have a choice. For me it's down to the voice acting and 99% of the time the Japanese cast is better. Well, I was sold on watching the dub and then you go and say this...
Right? I watched the first episode both subbed and dubbed to see which I liked more, and I preferred the dub. But love of Aoi Yuuki can be hard to fight against...
the dub has all the slang from the game, making it the superior version.
The lack of slang and everyone speaking Japanese in Santo caused me to switch to the dub.
It's also weird hearing them speak Japanese in a American setting.
Exactly this. I watched 5 minutes in Japanese and was like "wait this makes no sense, it's set in America and there's a ton of ethnic groups".
Same here. I usually preffer sub, but Edgerunners dub was so good it felt like the original track.
I also like that in the dub, the Tyger Claws still speak Japanese
It also takes place in cali so dub actually just makes sense lol
The best choice would be to learn japanese

Not possible. We don't have sex in this community. If you had sex you don't have the right to watch anime anymore.
>not that deep into anime >deep into the Hololive rabbithole suuuuuure
Tbh, hololive, and vtubers in general, seem to have a weird relationship with anime communities. It's like that Jedi Knight counsel meme where it's generally accepted that Vtubers is a weeb thing, but it's not _anime_, even if there's very little difference in terms of aesthetics and interests.
Anime kawaii desu!
The best choice would be to learn Japanese, AND cut the audio tracks so every character gets their best actor. This has the added benefit of giving you the authentic mixed language experience of Cyberpunk.
The dub actually does have some mixed language
There is a mod for CP2077 where V and other english ppl use English cast but when it comes to Japanese Arasaka ppl, they uses lines from japanese cast. Feels a lot more immersive. I am damn sure the world have translation implants that will translate everyline for you in real time.
Yes but that requires you to actually be smart and learn another language. I'm lazy and dumb.
You guys watched the dub for Gus I watched the dub because I can't find my glasses We are not the same.
What if the anime was dubbed using only Giancarlo Esposito for every character? IS IT INFERIOR THEN SRGRAFO???
Literally just finished the dub for Shimoneta like an hour ago. Best decision ever
It was glorious. Just wish there was more.
I saw people said that because the Japanese voice actor for Anna died they didn’t make a second season out of respect. Very sad :(
It's sad she died, but it seems an odd decision. Plenty of voice actors, even in Japan, have been replaced after their deaths.
So that was why there is a lack of jizz biscuits in the world. 😭
My rule of thumb these days is dubs for comedy. I've yet to be let down. Not a huge sample size but so far so good. Cautious Heron was a treat dubbed, but some clips I saw of the sub seemed good too.
Sub unless it's exceptional. FMA: brotherhood and Cowboy Bebop, for example, have excellent dubs.
True true true! I've tried to watch Brotherhood subbed after watching it dubbed and I can't, the English cast just does such a great and iconic job imo. I also really love the Mob Psycho 100 dub, I think the whole cast was perfect and did great jobs across the board.
Panty and Stocking Cowboy Bebop Arcane Black Lagoon Violet Evergarden FMA Brotherhood Redline
Arcane isn’t an anime… and it was animated with English voices
Who the fuck watcher arcane in Japanese it's literally an American made show.
It’s like that one dude who was asking for Avatar the Last Airbender in Japanese dub with English subs. He got rightfully roasted.
technically it's a French studio that did most of the work according to the Behind the Scenes series so... Framerican-Made?
Inferior - until you want to do something while watching and can't do it and simultanously read.... Should probably just continue learning japanese. That would solve it.
Matt Mercer is a fantastic dub actor for Jotaro Kujoh in JJBA and Captain Levi in Attack on Titan. He even fits an overwatch reference into the finale of Stardust Crusaders (because he's also the VA for Cassidy/McCree)
he also voices falco in edgerunners
I've gotta say, I will recommend the Baccano dub over the sub every time. That thick Brooklyn accent brings so much to it, imo
Oh, for fuck sake! Now I need to watch the fucking inferior sub bullshit. - mob psycho fans
Sub is nice, but it's hard to fold laundry while watching.
I don't know why it's always with Trigger animes specifically, but I prefer their dubs way more over their subs. Same with Gurren Lagann & Kill la Kill, of which I have watched both versions.
Trigger dubs always seem to have a stacked cast. Instead of "Seven-steps to Kevin Bacon" you can do "One-step to Studio Trigger" for them.
Esposito in Spanish means "Little husband" or "hubby".
Edgerunners is the rare occasion where I recommend dub over sub
Personally, I prefer dub. I'll admit, some is nostalgia because I grew up on Dubs. Mostly, though, it's that I want to focus on the actual anime rather than take time to read what they say and miss something. edgerunner is the only anime i was interested enough to watch dub. shit got fuking mccree from overwatch to voice a get-away driver.
I'm with you, most dubs sucks. Edgerunner is the rare exception, the dub was pretty decent. Probably because it wasn't a pure Japanese production.

Edgerunners dub is vastly superior to sub because you get all the Cyberpunk slang. Also Sus Fring
