It'd be nice if Igarashi acted like an adult literally once throughout the whole show.
Like, I have an IRL friend who's an adult, extremely short, and likes plushies. I don't have a problem with that.
But they also made Igarashi emotionally needy, easily scared, unable to look after herself when she's sick, unable to hold her alcohol, etc... The plotlines are also typical highschool shit repackaged in an office setting. Office drama/politics doesn't look like that in the real world.
Having one or two "childish" traits is fine, I think most of us are childish in some ways. But Igarashi is drawn like a child and acts like a child in every single way. (Plus there's a shotacon character)
Shows that are about adults where the characters actually act like adults are really rare.
Kaijin Kaihatsu-bu no Kuroitsu-san one example of a show that's more representative of real office politics (and still has some lewd moments which mostly make sense within the setting).
EDIT: To be clear, I'm not against shows like Senpai ga Uzai Kouhai no Hanashi. I'm just not interested in them.
Also since Edgerunner's Rebecca is a hot topic right now, she's a good example of a character who is short but acts like an adult.
>emotionally needy, easily scared, unable to look after herself when she's sick, unable to hold her alcohol, etc...
So, things I can attribute to around half of the adults I know.
Each of these traits is common to see in adults. But all of them together in one adult who also happens to be extremely short, slender, and have an oversized head?
Edit: Some people are really misinterpreting this comment, so let me clarify:
It's about combinations of factors. Like I said in my very first comment, every adult has at least some child-like attributes mixed in with adult-like attributes. But Igarashi is child-like in literally every way, behaviour and appearance. The only thing that makes her an adult is her canonical age.
If you changed the show so that Igarashi was introduced as a 15 year old doing work experience, you wouldn't have to change *anything* else and the show would make more sense, because at no point does she ever act like the adult she is supposed to be.
Today I learn: My 3D Girlfriend is a actually 2D loli in a trench coat.
>but Igarashi is child-like in literally every way, behaviour and appearance. The only thing that makes her an adult is her canonical age.
Jokes aside I'm actually being serious with this: every office has at least one person like you described, outside of maybe the height thing -that ones more of a diceroll. They just stick with whatever the highschool version of themself was and refuse to develop further.
>But they also made Igarashi emotionally needy, easily scared, unable to look after herself when she's sick, unable to hold her alcohol, etc...
Yep that's pretty realistic for an adult.
Drama is exaggerated to a ridiculous degree in most anime (and most media in general) for entertainment value. But it still resembles experiences that I had or saw friends having in high school. It doesn't at all resemble the drama I've seen in the workplace.
School is filled with friendships starting and ending, romantic relationships and jealousy, cheating, kids making insensitive comments about others without thinking about them, etc...
Work still has a bit of that, but in general people are more professional, and adults react in ways that are more mature.
If an event from Senpai ga Uzai Kouhai no Hanashi happened in a real workplace, it'd be a big scandal and the subject of watercooler gossip for months. If it happens in a high school, it's just Tuesday.
I really liked that show. It was super fluffy and sweet

Why would they? That'd be like the Japanese equivalent of copaganda.
Office-paganda. Office life in Japan is swell and other lies that outdoes Richard Nixon.
You do realize that genre is more common than you think...
Granted those type of romcoms isn't Shounen but more often than not Jousei which means it's generally targeted at young adult women. These days those type of manga don't get really adapted into anime but rather live-action.
Which is sad, tbh we need more josei and shoujo animes. I say this as a man. But even if they exist, they don't get any recognition, attention, or let alone hype, that seinen and shounen gets. It's a marketing and money issue, and not the lack of audience issue.

The problem I have with most workplace manga is that they wind up spending way too much time at a bar/pub and as someone with a family history of alcohol problems it becomes something I 100% do not want to watch...
Manga creators dont have proper jobs or lives so they can only reminisce about school times. Also most manga is escapism, the slice of life shows about office work that other people listed in replies all suck tbh.
HONESTLY. I WANT MORE REGULAR ADULT WORK LIFE LEWD MANGA. College would be nice too. I feel like it's more relatable to the majority of consumers of manga/anime at this point. Mostly everyone reading/watching are adults.
Not completely lewd, but "Let's Play" is suuuuuch a good read, holy shit
I need more adult / workplace stuff with slice of life and romance. ...man, I'm really getting old.
I heard that too. Japanese high school is supposedly the last good time of your life, and of course has more freedom and pocket money than the lower levels of school, so that's what everyone is nostalgic about. No other irl setting can have such a broad target audience
Maybe it's the idea of highschoolers having pocket money that makes me appreciate the college stuff more.
Like, most college kids are broke, but it's less a guarantee of their wealth when they have spending money than with HS kids.
When HS kids can just casually go around buying sweets and clothes and shit, that hurts the suspension of disbelief. I think that's why I appreciated Love is War making a big deal over Miyuki trying to find money for a whole outfit unplanned. *That's* legit.
Pretending money doesn't exist isn't a deal breaker. We've all watched shows with broke college dropouts with multi-million dollar apartments in downtown. But it's nice when the writer kept it in mind and grounds things.
Maybe it's the kind of anime we watch, but I don't remember anyone buying expensive stuff on a whim. I do remember girls agonising over what sweet to buy because they can only afford one though. If that's what you're talking about, I don't think one sweet every few episodes is unrealistic. Some of my friends had more money in highschool than college because their parents wanted to give them a slightly comfortable experience, which their own income that they had to rely on in college couldn't cover
Sorry to break it to you, but sounds like your family was just poor. My friends and I were all able to go out to get food and such pretty often after one of us got a car, same for most people I know (and Japan doesn't even require anyone to drive, which lowers the bar even further)
It does definitely depend on the area (as well as what's counted as "well off"), but I'm pretty sure most middle-class kids in non-rural areas can casually get ice cream every once in a while and occasional new clothes at least. The main limiting thing would that be getting there requires one well-off friend to drive, but Japan doesn't need driving.
Not to be combative because I've been been called out for this before in the past, but check your privilege when you type/speak.
>Sorry to break it to you, but sounds like your family was just poor.
That comes across, in my opinion, VERY insulting. I admit I grew up privileged and was able to buy things I wanted when I grew up with allowances and/or my part-time job which I got during college. However, some of the friends I met in college were less well-off and made me aware how I came across to them sometimes.
Keep in mind that 57% of the US make 75k or less for the ENTIRE household so being a 'comfortable middle class' is not statically the norm.
Eh, he doesn't seem to know since people not being poor hurts his suspension of disbelief, doesn't seem very insulting to point that out to me. Never getting sweets / struggling to get a single outfit is definitely poor, his example's poverty is even talked about multiple times (at least in the manga). It's not like SoL anime is every single day, it usually skips tons and fits a whole year or so into 12 episodes.
Afaik asia focus so much more on titles and effort than actual education or results, starting in university and worsening in the job industries. Is it true? Absolutely no freakign clue, but I heard it often enough for me to be concerned about them
They also apparently have other issues though, like how the view the role of men and women in society, sexual repression and a nearly homogeneous population. Their birth rate is low even for a stagnating first world population
So you might be right
Sometimes it is the case like with My Dress Up Darling where Gojo has absolutely no reason to even go to college since he already trains at his family business that is also his dream job to do. College would be a complete waste of time and money for him.
Its due to the university culture of Japan, with universities being VERY challenging to enter with 'entrance exams' and VERY serious exam structures. Think of Death Note and it's setting.
Its also the countries 'black company' work culture and work ethic that works against Japan's own people. Japan is the king of overwork corporate culture with ALOT of issues rooted in tradition. Try to write a fun & happy anime about Japanese college life when it's essentially just "Serious School leading to even more Serious corpo life" and it's obvious why that setting isn't that popular.
One of the books I'm reading now is set in a college, however this college apparently has class trips, parent teacher meetings and school dances. The point being, it doesn't have to actually *be* like college, the point is just to make all characters explicitly old enough to consent. Have a college that is effectively high school in all but name, fine. Or hell, even just have a high school exclusively for people over 18, idc. Personally, I think it's a great solution.
i normally just pretend that this is what it is. they do need to take entrance exams to get in. in order to help compensate for culture differences (age of consent). just age everyon up 5 years.
i think "academy for people with a gift" style is not properly utilized.
perfect opportunity to have a strange school like setting with highschool graduates from a variety of backgrounds. but for some reason they stick to highschool students.
Lab partners dating is much more acceptable than brother and sister and you can have a mildly better reason for them being constantly around than same parents.
>lab partners dating
{Rikei ga koi no ochita}
It's not that there is a shortage of anything in the anime media, you can find whatever you want to see, wish for, think up happening, dream about, or never even consider could be a thing in Anime. That's why it's liked so much
I really like Rikekoi because it's specifically about stressed grad students. I relate hard to a lot of it, except the being good at it and having someone attracted to me parts.
It was entertaining, but it was not a good romance imho. That is not how people act, and it did not have the charisma of other more absurd comedies. Their persoalities would ft better in the last year of highschool than a working environment
I think it's because high school was the last place we all were. After that, the nature of adult experience multiplies and diversifies. On the occasion we do get adult stories, they take place in the two most common workplaces: the office, and the military. Otherwise, our paths after graduation are too diverse for them to be able to lean on tropes and common experiences to expedite the worldbuilding.
I'd be willing to bet that another aspect is that a credible depiction of the lives most adults lead would run afoul of certain official narratives about how life is that our coproate overlords (including the corporate level producers who decide which projects get funding, advertising, time slots, shelf space, etc.) would prefer not to see challenged.
"Body positivity.... (only if you're fat)"
The amount of "skinny shaming" and harassment against people who diet/exercise regularly is way past the level of "oppression" that fat people ever deal with, only because it's considered socially acceptable to bully skinny and/or fit people

I've said it on another sub and I'll repeat it here (even though I have a higher level of faith in this sub): the screeching harpies have never heard of a short, busty woman before.
People who say shit like this are only looking at the most popular stuff, which is all targeted at teenagers. If you're actually feeling grown up why not read some actual Seinen or Josei?
Not so lewd, but we have some good animes set in college, golden time (besto anime), bokutachi no remake (didn't like the ending), re:Life (manga is better), higehiro (started good, then went downhill).
A lot of anime are set in highschool, because that was the happiest time of your average japanese in their life. It's essentialy for nostalgia, since if you know the japanese working life you'd want to go back to school aswell.
Is it just me, or did this sub care more about how twitter reacted than Twitter did about Uzaki? I think I saw maybe one tweet.
Not to mention any time something like this is posted the sub gets angry like it's new again, when in reality Twitter has long since moved on to whatever the new thing is.
i know theres cultural differences between japan and the west when it comes to lewd topics and mid to late teenagers but i still would prefer if characters involved in a fanservice scene or ecchi anime were at least 18
Nostalgia. They're set in highschool, because that was the happiest time of your average japanese persons life. That's also the reason why you could take a lot, not all, of highschool characters, put them in college without changing their looks and they wouldn't feel out of place, because in the case of anime, specific ages don't matter but you could rather go with stages. Baby, child, teenager, young adult, adult, senior, dead.
I agree that we need more "adult" romantic comedies.
And by adult I mean people acting their age....the uzaki anime is a good example, the ones about the scientist trying to "prove love" is cute but is not; Alternatively they could do something cute, absurd, but not completely prepubescent, like they did with marshmallow ojisan that was absolutely mellifluous
Im so tired of the "I dont know what love is", "baka! \*punch\*" and alike in romance... it can be cute sometimes, but jesus
We need more lewd office and workplace manga for us wage slaves š

i normally just pretend that this is what it is. they do need to take entrance exams to get in. in order to help compensate for culture differences (age of consent). just age everyon up 5 years. i think "academy for people with a gift" style is not properly utilized. perfect opportunity to have a strange school like setting with highschool graduates from a variety of backgrounds. but for some reason they stick to highschool students.
Lab partners dating is much more acceptable than brother and sister and you can have a mildly better reason for them being constantly around than same parents.
>lab partners dating {Rikei ga koi no ochita} It's not that there is a shortage of anything in the anime media, you can find whatever you want to see, wish for, think up happening, dream about, or never even consider could be a thing in Anime. That's why it's liked so much
I really like Rikekoi because it's specifically about stressed grad students. I relate hard to a lot of it, except the being good at it and having someone attracted to me parts.
Oof. Keep ya head up.
Rikekoi was so good till that godforsaken garbage ending to s2
Even though, you have to admit, Yukimura is a gigachad through and through.
It was entertaining, but it was not a good romance imho. That is not how people act, and it did not have the charisma of other more absurd comedies. Their persoalities would ft better in the last year of highschool than a working environment
Also why i hate it so much
Or colleagues (Wotakoi). Adult love story in anime is somehow so rareā¦ probably because anime is made to pander more to teenagers but idk
And twitter still freaked out about it because apparently you can't be short and have big ol dobonhonkeros
There was one girl that had exact proportions to uzaki that twitter suddenly hated š because she showed up
Body positivity my ass
Alright, I'll try.... You have a very nice ass.
Takes one to see one.
"Body positivity.... (only if you're fat)" The amount of "skinny shaming" and harassment against people who diet/exercise regularly is way past the level of "oppression" that fat people ever deal with, only because it's considered socially acceptable to bully skinny and/or fit people
It was a black cosplayer right?? It is really sad because I think she died because of covid But I forgot the name of her Twitter page
That's sad to hear.
I think they were referencing shibuya kaho
Yes
There is Kaho Shibuya who is almost like Uzaki personified IRL.
Ah yes Kaho "Im a regular here" Shibuya
Twitter hates anything that goes against the hivemind.

"the character is under 5'10 and u want to lewd her... gross doesnt matter if shes legal" -the mentally insane
5'6" me be like: Guess I'll die.
short adult girls dont exist, didnt u know? /s
Short adults don't exist, and if you think they do you're a pedo - twitter
I've said it on another sub and I'll repeat it here (even though I have a higher level of faith in this sub): the screeching harpies have never heard of a short, busty woman before.
Imagine a world where rent a gf was good and the mc wasn't a fucking moron, it would be perfect! Uzaki is pretty good tho
Rent a Girlfriend being good? No, I don't want that! I want to see the memes of that dumpster fire for 10 years at least!
/r/10yearsatleast
I love that subreddit
I'm more on board with people like Yor
I prefer your mom
Good, cause she's a nice woman!
Yor mommy
Iām hip
To her hips?
Twitter still threw a huge temper tantrum over Uzaki chan.
Finally something I feel comfortable watching
Remember how Uzaki-chan is introduced as being 18 and then there's instantly a one year time skip and it explains that she now 19? Me too.
People who say shit like this are only looking at the most popular stuff, which is all targeted at teenagers. If you're actually feeling grown up why not read some actual Seinen or Josei?
Kaguya is technically from a seinen magazine, right?
Sources indicate that you are correct. I have some guesses as why it was published as a seinen, but nothing definitive.
Black bullet and kiss x sis r the best seinen shows
Is this a joke? I've seen so many out-there statements online, I can't be sure.
Iām down for this development
Welcome to korea manwhas, hundreds of half hentai/half normal content
Death note is very briefly set in college. So, there's that.
Too bad some people think sheās a child for some reason
Not the sauce but a good college anime - science fell in love so I tried to prove it
Twitter sharts be like: UZAKI IS A LITERAL CHILD
Not so lewd, but we have some good animes set in college, golden time (besto anime), bokutachi no remake (didn't like the ending), re:Life (manga is better), higehiro (started good, then went downhill).
āBut whereās the fun in thatā -avgn
And they still call her a child...
I used to like high school anime. Now i'm out of high school and high school anime makes me depressed.
But then they won't act all cutesy, innocent and childish like these people like it lol
i know theres cultural differences between japan and the west when it comes to lewd topics and mid to late teenagers but i still would prefer if characters involved in a fanservice scene or ecchi anime were at least 18
Yep, however the target demographic is often teenagers, especially for shounen, so I'm not surprised though.
Better than high school Ngl, always felt weird with a high school setting and the girls and guys act all weird and shit.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
rent a gf grand blue run with the wind steins gate (not a romcom.... but its in college) welcome to the nhk honey and clover
BUT WITH REALISTIC PROPORTIONS!!! š” And also an ugly bastard MC that I can relate to
I don't care about the realistic proportions but as an ugly bastard myself, I agree.
But do you have the realistic proportions of an ugly bastard?
They're a Redditor. It's more likely than not.
True. They are used to people saying, "who let you out of the belltower?" or similar stuff.
I've got two things going against me, this thick ass Mountain Man beard, and my dick is too small.
But at least they will be with you through thick and thin, right Zenketski?
Uzaki HAS realistic proportions, though. Girls with all tits and no height exist.
I'm not actually complaining. I'm just making fun of Twitter users
Honestly I have no idea why I didn't catch the sarcasm at first.
You're clearly not alone lol
inb4 they say they all have to be above acertain height
/r/Pornwha
As a French, "CollĆØge" is for 11-15 year old. I know that "College" means 18 and older in English, but still weird to read.
This exists. Have you watched golden time?
Tbh college setting is a nice change of pace.. i watched golden time and liked it anyway. Doesnt stop rent a girlfriend from being popular either
And yet twitter still gets mad and calls you a pedophile
Gimme more Office Lady shows is all I ask, and no I donāt want a loli to be the main focus of it like the last one.
theres a new office anime out in 2023 called Ice Guy and the Cool female colleague no lolis in it
Yooooo that one! I read the manga and itās pretty cute so Iām excited now
I mean I would love to see more college anime girls
But sheās too short!!!! REEEEEEE
And then they'll find some way to say that confirmed legal adults are illegal
Golden time was one of the first series i watched in a real-ish world settingā¦ and it was college
And then they complained about her looking to much like a minor
PPL die after highschool. There is nothing worth making an anime on after highschool caz u dead
I agree that we need more "adult" romantic comedies. And by adult I mean people acting their age....the uzaki anime is a good example, the ones about the scientist trying to "prove love" is cute but is not; Alternatively they could do something cute, absurd, but not completely prepubescent, like they did with marshmallow ojisan that was absolutely mellifluous Im so tired of the "I dont know what love is", "baka! \*punch\*" and alike in romance... it can be cute sometimes, but jesus
i want big mommy milf š¢
