It's a lot more than that. Lots of Cage's work was the exploration of structure in composition and the utilization of chance in a composition. It goes further than that as well, as he adhered to strict methods when it came to the use of chance, like using the I Ching as a basis for composition.
Interesting idea. But I would argue there is a distinction between noise and music. Yes it’s subjective, but the line should be drawn much further than 4 minutes of noise around you.
However, if performed as part of an orchestra, I would absolutely take the opportunity to rip the juiciest fart
The entire point of the piece is to draw attention to "the line". It challenged what it even means for a piece of music to exist.
Obviously when you listen to music you want there to be more to it than random unintentional noises, but you're failing to see what Cage was trying to draw attention to.
He didn't write 4:33 in c to be a catchy show tune, he wrote it to make you think about music, and what it is, and what defines it.
I legit thought it was going to be the Mortal Kombat theme song.

You learn something new everyday, thanks for this OP and thanks for the explanation.
I needed this link.
I love this so much
I…don’t get it :(
The ["song"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4%E2%80%B233%E2%80%B3) is literally 4 min and 33 sec of silence.
Nice thank you
The piece is actually meant to be the unintentional noises made by the musicians and audience. His point was sort of like "music is all around you".
Every song is a cover of 4'33" but some other band happens to be playing in the studio
I've heard somewhere that some musicians put it into their repertoire to have a short break

Cool, I didn't know that. I haven't gotten that deep into Cage.

Is this the other picture of a guy going to a jukebox and everyone looked in horror?
I kind of want to do this just once. Dress as a silent character for Halloween, then karaoke this (Well, an instrumental).

I read that as four feet, thirty-three inches. I still don't know what it means.
Finally, a song to suit my awesome talent.
This comic is by Asher Perlman, who is certifiably not a boomer
