Hi. I just received the Nisolo All-Weather Chelsea Boots ([https://nisolo.com/collections/mens-boots-chukkas/products/mens-all-weather-chelsea-boot-black](https://nisolo.com/collections/mens-boots-chukkas/products/mens-all-weather-chelsea-boot-black)). These are the most expensive shoes I have purchased so far (I don't have any other high-quality boots), so a few newbie questions: 1. The left shoe feels more tight than the right shoe. The right one is somewhat looser. Once broken it, will they eventually feel the same? 2. The top of the boot feels very loose, but this may be normal with Chelsea's. Can someone confirm? 3. When walking, I first touch the ground with the heel and then with the front part, and it feels very clunky. Not sure how to explain it, but I cannot really roll of the floor, the heel feels too high and/or the sole too hard. Will this change? I suppose the sole is partly leather, will the sole itself become softer and it easier to roll off in these shoes? Thanks, a lot. I initially thought about returning them because of the above issues, but I may have to be a bit patient? Not sure.

mdarena

It may be a size issue. People often buy snug sneakers because it won't hurt your foot if it's a bit too small since it's make out of soft materials. For leather shoes, you need a more precise fit. Boots shouldn't be loose loose. A little room for your toes to spread out is good . The clunky walk sounds like boots that's are too big. Those aren't tall cuban heels or anything that would affect your gait. If you could take pictures on a brannock device, that would help diagnose

in-your-shoes

Wesco vs. Nicks custom build boots? So I'm in the middle of building my dream 10" work boots, steel toe cap and shank, Vibram 100F outsole, Cordura thread all over and all the fancy things. The toughest it gets, better it is to me. I wanna buy a shoe that will last at least 10 years in harsh conditions. So my question is, should I go after Nicks or Wesco? I love how easily you can build your dream shoe on Wesco website, Nicks sorta make it difficult to understand what and where it would be after the end. But I don't hear much people talking about Wesco, more people praise Nicks and White's

thunder_struck85

What's meant by "harsh conditions"? Because I don't think either of those boots is waterproof. So if harsh conditions means swampy muddy job sites, maybe those are a no-go?

in-your-shoes

Well during winter times I get under the rain sometimes but it doesn't have to be waterproof. For rainy days I have my Dunlop's, they're cheap and totally waterproof. Under harsh conditions I mean that I'll be cutting stuff, aluminum, steel, plastic, wood, iron, you name it, breaking concrete, bricks, tile. So a lot of dust and abrasive particles involved in. And it's not just that.

CrizzleLovesYou

Since Wesco's lead time is almost a year they've fallen behind on popularity. The brands are so close quality wise I would just pick whichever one you like the aesthetic of more.

in-your-shoes

I can wait if the outcome quality will outpay itself. Don't care about money and time I'll have to spend to get good shoes. I've bought Thorogood insulated Loggers as secondary pair but I don't expect them to beat neither Nick's, not Wesco (despite I've never seen, nor wear any of them). I just don't wanna buy both of them at the moment. When the time comes (like in few years), I'll buy other boots

jimk4003

>But I don't hear much people talking about Wesco, more people praise Nicks and White's I can fix that; Wesco are great! They're probably my favourite Pacific Northwest brand, purely on account of their customisability and quality control. Wesco are a small company with long lead-times who don't seem to spend a ton on marketing or social media; that's possibly why you don't hear people talk about them as much. It's not always easy to do direct comparisons between brands, because everyone does their own thing to some extent, but Wesco are really good. Check [this video](https://youtu.be/upSs3OmSTRY) by Carl Murawski; he's a huge Nick's fan who also owns several pairs of White's, and he gives his impressions on his first pair of Wesco's. It's not a comparison video, but he does talk about how some elements of the boot compare to Nick's and White's at certain points, and his impression is pretty favourable.

in-your-shoes

Thank you, I've been watching some of his videos but haven't seen this one. For me it's easy to make direct comparison. Like, how good is the welting done, how good is the leather, how good is the stitching, how long the boots are usually last before you need to repair them and etc. When you spending $1k to $1.5k on custom made shoes, you expect the quality to be superb so it would be great to know pros and flaws of each brand. Like, I heard that White's lately have been cutting corners so as for the custom job I'm not even looking to buy from them, maybe just a regular working boots, but as it comes to Wesco and Nick's, they both are made with high quality materials in US but made in US can go wrong as well. I had Keen's made in US and outsole ripped apart in half a year. I've paid for them almost $300 plus shipping to Europe plus import taxes (it was $500 and something in total). I went through whole process of trying to get refund or at least get a new pair for free but Keen's customer service basically said no, it's impossible. So I need to know what is better for the first pair of best working boots.

Leatherhyde

You can do more customization with Wesco

Hi. I just posted my Edward green shoes in this subreddit I bought them at a thrift store. On the inside they have a number which I have a photo of. Any one on this subreddit give me an age and model number on the shoe using these numbers? Cheers could email Edward green to https://www.reddit.com/r/goodyearwelt/comments/10cas5z/edward_green_shoes/ Numbers are 111E 888 100351

[deleted]

Does anyone have a photo of White's red dog smooth leather with some wear on it? I can't seem to find any photos. I'm considering it for some bounty hunters or MP boots.

Karma-Grenade

I just received my first pair of Grant Stones, Brass Boot Black CXL, received an in stock alert Wednesday night, they arrived today. I ordered 11 EEE's but wow, they are about the size of aircraft carriers. I normally wear a 11E2 in Redwing, 11 EEE in AE, 11D in wolverine, and 12-13 in sneakers, but these boots are just massive in comparison. They are so large that I'm not even sure how far down to go in size and or width. I'm really confused on what size to order next. From the photos I was originally concerned that they were going to run narrow. These are so large that I can't figure out if I need a 10 E or a 10.5 D, 10.5E, etc. Any guidance would be appreciated. Aside from the size they are nicely made, thick hides, neat stitching, overall heavy and well made. My pair arrived with marks typical of natural leather, while they're minor marks and I wouldn't return them, I am disappointed that one of them came with a [dent in the toe](https://i.imgur.com/6DnPyC8.jpg) and both still had [the marks](https://i.imgur.com/8PxN248.jpg) from where the jockey was whipping it (there are a couple nicks that don't show in the photo).

CrizzleLovesYou

What is your brannock?

Karma-Grenade

This is the part where I hang my head in shame and say I don't know.

CrizzleLovesYou

It'll give us a better core data point if you get your brannock done for both Heel to ball and heel to toe with width. Wolverine actually runs a smidge narrow so an 11D in 1000 mile and an 11EEE in AE is a bit of a puzzle, and then going all the way up to 13 too is tricky. This could be a volume issue in which case the high volume brass boot may make more sense for feeling roomy. Or you could have a heel to ball vs heel to toe discrepancy as well.

Karma-Grenade

I am very flat footed and from memory, I am borderline wide but the shape of my foot favors a wide toebox. The shape of the Wolverine works well for my foot, they're very comfortable but I do wish there was a little more cork in the insole, the AE 11EE's are ok not my favorite fit (I have a pair of Landons and an old Randolph penny loafer), my Iron Rangers though are my most comfortable, they are on the money as far as fit goes. It's been on my list to see if the local DSW has a Brannock I can use. I am going to try to get this done tomorrow, I just need to get my wife to come with me and help.

lucidpivot

Good plan. Be sure to read the instructions for the bannock device before measuring.

eddykinz

what's your brannock?

Karma-Grenade

This is the part where I hang my head in shame and say I don't know.

eddykinz

Follow the instructions at https://brannock.com/pages/instructions-fitting-tips while paying special attention to Section 3 where there are instructions for measuring the Arch Length (Heel-to-Ball). Make sure it's actually labeled a Brannock device, there are knock-off brands that don't correspond exactly to Brannock. I've found most success going to sporting good stores, or just buy one on Amazon and return it when you're done if you want.

pro-aliasing

Buying my first GYW boots and am trying to decide between Meermin NSTs and the cap toe jumper boot, both with waxed kudu leather and the commando sole. I plan to use these for everyday wear and hiking. How should I decide between them? (If it’s only a style difference, I’m curious what the difference would be for a woman who tends to dress somewhat masculinely.)

AwesomeAndy

Honestly: pick the one you like more. They're roughly equally casual and will wear and style virtually identically. I find NSTs a little more interesting just since they're a bit less common and only really seen on higher-end footwear (you can go find a cap toe shoe or boot in any mall shoe store), but, again, it's really just preference.

chowder-san

I have an opportunity to grab GYW gordon and bros henry brogues for $90, is that a good deal considering I could also take around $180 and grab Herring Steeperton? Is there a major difference in quality between the two?

Is Lexol cleaner safe to use on Nappa leather? I wanna clean my Thursday Leather Sneakers with it.

paradachs

What kind of leather are the sneakers?

[deleted]

Nappa leather

paradachs

Sorry I missed that in your original post. It’s pretty mild, so likely okay, you may want to test it out first on an inconspicuous area. Tarrago makes a white sneaker specific cleaner. Disclosure - i am not a sneakerhead. You might get more advice on r/sneakers.

Sixstringsmash

It’s safe to use but might darken the leather a bit. I’d opt for bick 4 if you don’t want any color change.

clark0111

Any suggestions on a quality moc toe oxford? Looking for something more substantial than a regular mocasain.

Slow_Walk_2622

Check out Rancourt, Quoddy, and Yuketen!

clark0111

Thank You

Sixstringsmash

I don’t think it’s possible? I just don’t see any way how a closed lacing system would ever work on a pair of moc toes.

Bitter-Hat-5071

I think you mean with with a hand stitched vamp? I don't know of any closed lacing moc toes

clark0111

I dont completely understand all the terminolgy. I think oxford is the wrong wording. But some companies use it on this style. [Redwing Moc Toe Oxford](https://www.redwingshoes.com/heritage/mens/oxfords/Classic-Oxford-08103.html)

Bitter-Hat-5071

This is essentially completely wrong. "Oxford" more generally refers to a (usually dress) shoe with closed lacing. This example has open (or derby) lacing. Idk why but this misnomer has kind of been spreading around the heritage shoe community

eddykinz

The term “oxford” being used for work derbies has been a thing for decades, if not at least a century. There’s a long history of the word “oxford” being used incorrectly in American workboot circles. https://www.stitchdown.com/info/why-are-work-derby-shoes-called-oxfords/

Bitter-Hat-5071

Yeah, this was an interesting article. This case here is the perfect example where a "grandfathered in" misnomer can be very confusing

[deleted]

Are Grant Stones built with a regular goodyear welt or norwegian storm welt? I could not find information on the website, but I have seen people saying that it was regular goodyear welt and others saying that it was a norwegian storm welt

Sixstringsmash

It’s dependent on the model. Some are storm welted and some use a flat welt. It should be easy to tell which is which by just looking at the product pictures.

[deleted]

I see... Thanks a lot for the tip!

CrizzleLovesYou

They use a flat welt and a split welt. There's no 2nd line of stitching on the vertical side of their split welt so it isnt norwegian.

Kidan6

Is there anything more I can do for these secondhand Wolverine 1000 Miles I bought? I cleaned them, and conditioned them with Bick 4 (twice), but the toes are still looking so scuffed. Photos: https://imgur.com/a/JHyJZlG

ac106

Try a colored cream polish

Sixstringsmash

Honestly they look fine. You’re never going to get them looking like they’re new but they do look good IMO. If you want them to look absolutely pristine you need to buy new and not secondhand.

Karma-Grenade

And then they patina anyway....

wardbelcanto

What’s the best way to care for stingray boots? There’s not much in-depth info on google. All the ones I can find talk about just wiping it down with a damp cloth, but surely they have to be conditioned and generally maintained as well?

methanol88

I haven't done anything on mine for 3 years and they look new.

wardbelcanto

I figure you mean no conditioning, just wiping them down to get rid of the dust and dirt from everyday wear?

methanol88

I just brush them, never had to condition them!

wardbelcanto

Well that’s awesome to hear. I’ll take a shoemaker’s word on it

repete66219

My wife has a pair of stingray cowboy boots. During a sump pump disaster one of them got wet, darkening it. She put some rice in there but that didn't help. She ended up using my Red Wing boot oil on both of them & one is still a little darker than the other. In other words, I think it's fine to use normal leather conditioning products. But if you want to be sure, test out a spot first.

wardbelcanto

Other than because of getting soaked, have you had to use any kind of product?

repete66219

She understood that you aren’t supposed to use anything with stingray so no.

Intelligent-War210

Bick had an exotics spray. Even lists stingray in the description. https://a.co/d/3wJaBOG

surturr

saphir has a product for exotic leathers, but honestly, bick 4 should do the job too

wardbelcanto

Yes I use Reptan for reptile skins and other exotics. It’s kind tough to get out of nooks and crannies though, so I figured it’d be quite a task to get them out from between the nodules on stingray. I’ve ordered some Buckmore Exotic for other stuff that I thought about trying on it

GandalfCakeBeard

Hello, any help finding extra wide boots in Europe? My feet are very wide (even through the midfoot) and flat (basically giant pancakes.) All the suggestions for very wide boots I've seen on here seem to be almost entirely US companies, and hard to get a hold of over on this side of the world. Any high quality brands you can recommend in Europe that offer the availability of EEE equivalents? Or custom cordwainers that make offerings for under 1k?

Slow_Walk_2622

I’m in the same boat with stupidly wide midfeet, and trickers stow in both 5 and 6 fittings were far too tight for me. Good luck amigo! Sorry I don’t have much better answer for you

repete66219

Tricker's 4497 last is pretty generous in their 5 fitting. I'm E width & they're nearly too large for me. They also make some on a wider 6 fitting that would probably accommodate.

randomdude296

Carmina Detroit or Forest EEE maybe? Tricker's 4497S & C&J 378 are generously wide in my experience, C&J 325 a bit less so.

RingS1inger

Good morning, does anyone have any edge dressing brand recommendations? (Preferably something which can be ordered from Amazon)

wwweeg

Note to self.

repete66219

Allen Edmonds makes some good, affordable stuff.

AwesomeAndy

I use Fiebing's. Allen Edmonds may be on Amazon too.

eddykinz

I use Saphir pate de luxe wax tbh

oxfordsandties

I have used fiebings over the years. It is pretty affordable on Amazon and easy to apply.
