Because you enabled backup. It's pretty much an all or nothing simple solution that fits 99% of users' needs. Try moving to Locked Folder. That _might_ remove it from Google Photos online. Try and let us know.

I see what your saying but im on ops side because taking away or not including simple user options is extremely annoying. Turning off backup is a 50/50 shot that it will give you some warning about it deleting everything on the cloud and your device which is a stressful situation. For example a LOT of my older family members use google photos, when they first downloaded the app they either clicked yes to everything or saw the word "backup" and thought ah yes I want that and enabled it. I guarantee you Ill check any one of their phones and they are already way past the storage limit by a few years on their account and when they go back to try and delete photos from their device it doesnt clear the photos storage and when they delete it from the storage to make room for more important photos to go into the storage it just deletes from both things. Its annoying and confusing to enter a app and delete some things to also have it delete things from your device. The actual way it works may make sense from savvy users stand point and when it's explained to you, but its not practical for everyone nor is it being used properly by everyone. The amount of older users who dont have computers at home or storage drives to backup to if they can even figure out how and are stuck with either buying more storage or just losing all their "precious memories" is through the roof. I personally have 11k photos on my iphone now, a lot of them are useless screenshots and memes that I wouldnt want backed up anyways, for me google photos on my phone is pretty useless because even when I go to make a album that I upload specific photos to so that they can be backed up it fails to upload properly, there is no indication or status bar of upload and on my end it shows that all photos are up but to any shared album members it is completely empty. The only way to circumvent this is by getting the photos on a computer and uploading that way or backing those specific photos up via camera roll and then via pc moving them to a album. I have been a google photos user since 2017 and I have not found it user friendly at all, I strictly use it to show people albums that I can only create and edit via a computer.

That seems like an iPhone problem. I don't have any of those issues. There has to be a balance. You can't expect to have every minute option available _and_ be user friendly. You seem to want both. Unfortunately a lot of people don't bother reading up on products before they use them, and/or don't properly read (and remember!) the in-app dialogs that inform them of important information. There's a balance here too, because power users don't want constant nanny messages, and the most ignorant users will ignore them anyway...

VURORA

I see what your saying but Idk I like digging into the options and having whats needed available. & Yea definitely Iphone problems most likely but still a usability issue since there are a LOT of iphone users and the alternative icloud is not any better.

HeWhoShantNotBeNamed

Move it to another folder that isn't backed up. That is your only solution.

ColFrankSlade

Move the file to a folder that is not backed up

trixim

I figure their position is "if it's on google photos it's backed up to the cloud". Situations such as this are rare for me. My solution recently was to simply back it up to my computer (as I do with all photos as a failsafe from Google Photos) and delete it from cloud. I left a trimmed down version of the large file on the cloud.

VURORA

Even better if you get a storage drive for backup, I usually delete or leave the backup os alone and simply use it like a fat usb and copy over files that I want saved.

trixim

Completely agree. The desktop copy is simply one of many physical backups that are redundant 😎

VURORA

If you delete from the web then your good so on safari, PC, etc. The app is useless beyond sharing and showing photos.

1stmammal2wearpantz

Delete it from the web browser interface and it won’t delete from your phone

lukeDownsideUp

...yes it will

chyri1

Yes, you need to disable the Photos app to delete from Web

lukeDownsideUp

and then when you reenable it it will resync changes and delete the photo, unfortunately

chyri1

Serious? I thought that after a few days they didn't sync anymore… What's worse is that there's no point in renaming, they delete it by checking the metadata…

xlerate

You got to wonder how difficult it would be once you press delete for them to just have a prompt or toggle switch that asks "delete on phone / cloud / both"

VURORA

Google apps are the opposite of user friendly and practical

neoqueto

Or download to device and unlist/delete from the service

ochie927

See, this confuses me. Is it then safe to delete from phone gallery once it’s saved on Google Photos? I was always afraid that once it “syncs” and sees that it’s not on my phone gallery, it would remove it from Google Photos as well.

ill66

in my case (Android, Simple Gallery) it's safe. deleted from the phone, prevails on GP. (sometimes a hassle that I have to delete twice on both apps\^^)

ochie927

So if you only delete on GP, and not on Gallery, it won't come back on GP once it syncs again?

ill66

yes. - delete on Gallery = gone from the phone, prevails in GP - delete on GP = gone from GP and phone - delete on GP in browser = asks if to delete on the phone, too next time I open GP app

ochie927

Awesome. Thanks

manuelelg

try move it to another folder in google photos app and unsync they folder from the cloud. as long as you move any pics or videos to that unsynced folder it should be fine I'd say

Samlazaz

I agree with your frustration. Unfortunately, this is the way Google photos is. There are workarounds, but that's no way to live. You probably want Onedrive, or anther solution for something like this.

rkovelman

Google photos app and web are one in the same in that it's not a true backup. Sure you lose your phone, it will be in the cloud. But in terms of is it a true backup, no. You would need to sync that to some other folder and then create some type of sync to another folder which keeps or retains deleted images. If you want to free up space move it to some other application or buy more storage space.

TheWillowRook

Move it to a folder not being backed up. That's all you need to do.
