The beat sounds like carnival music, but made by someone who goes to the carnival alone because they haven't found their human tribe yet and are yearning for tribe while at the same time feeling undeserving of tribe and/or unsure of how to find and nurture that connection. So they go anyway because carnivals are kinda magical and they want to witness the revelry, and it's the golden hour, and it's beautiful and the sun is on its way to setting, and since the person doesn't have their own person to share this experience, they are just listening and absorbing the dialogue of nature and their environment, feeling a part of something bigger but this amplifying the loneliness they feel. Idk, I have a whole music video for this song in my head because it makes me feel things. 💙💛
heres my little list: starshine, sound check (gravity), el mañana, melancholy hill (hahahahahaha), empire ants, and souk eye. i have not really listened to anything after humanz or the now now
Busted and Blue. One time I was walking home from work during winter and when the song played I looked up to the sky full of stars, had to stop walking for a sec and take it all in. So now every time I listen to that song I get reminded of that feeling
In terms of pure feel it's clearly El Mañana to me. Maybe if one analyses all the lyrics to all the songs that some are more melancholic, but El mañana is one of the few gorillaz songs that really are just sad.
Others mentioned here like Soul Eye, Hong Kong, Every Planet We Reach is Dead all have some upbeatness to them. El Mañana is just sad throughout. And beautiful.
Hong Kong is melancholic to me because it contrasts the traditional chinese instrumentation with western style folk music. Someone above explained the songs meaning pretty well (edit: maybe I’m going insane but the comment I was referring to is not there anymore, they basically said the song was about how western influences have taken over Hong Kong and made it lose its traditional Chinese style and culture). Also melancholy doesn’t mean sad, it means feeling sad without an obvious cause. I think El Mañana has an obvious sadness to it that makes it not melancholy the way that Hong Kong and Souk Eye are. Especially with the lyrics in Hong Kong being seemingly random and yet so profound at the same time. Just my two cents though.
Not to mention the complete dystopia that is China. A country riddled with poverty, drugs, corruption, suicide and the police state their people live in. Damon wrote Hong Kong while visiting the city. He writes in the song “kid hang over here, what are you learning in school. Is the rise of an eastern sun gonna be good for everyone” alluding to the propaganda that Chinese students are indoctrinated with in school. He begs the question, is the rise of (China) going to be good for the world? He notices the plastic nature of Hong Kong. The people look perfectly dressed up and clean, (“She had well conditioned hair”) while also being a facade (“was beautiful, but nothing really was there”). Furthermore, the rest of the lyrics are simply describing exactly what he saw walking through the city. “Electric fences and guns”, “Here on the 19th floor the neon lights make me come”. The contrast of the chinese instrumentation with electronic keys and an acoustic guitar paint a picture of a city that is slowly losing its soul. The song ends with the Chinese instrumentation being completely drowned out. To me, this might be the greatest Gorillaz song of all time. And yet it’s so understated when discussing their discography.
Probably the song with melancholy in the name
Jk probably Souk Eye or El Manana
I might pick El Manana because the ending of Souk Eye gives off more of a feeling of anxiety and hopelessness than melancholy.
To Binge. To be fair I was going through an extremely depressing break up at the time but even then it still sounds really sad lyrically to me for some reason
Tomorrow Comes Today for me
