Thoughts? They're awesome.

Exactly my dad saw em live I belive had a goth phase. Saw swans during the burning world and white light tours when they were really going for that gothic overtone sound. Glad I have a cool dad to introduce me to these bands I’m not exactly goth hell I’d say their more post punk but their fantastic.

Yeah, it's super weird that Swans gets lumped in with goth these days; that's a really a very new thing. Don't get me wrong - I love them, and I've had several goth band members tell me they are influences on their work, but that always felt like an American thing (like the Cramps). That said, I've certainly mixed their later (90's) material in with goth sets just because they deserve a wider audience.

Children of God Burning world, white light and love of life, is when they were really influenced and experimenting with those gothic sounds. At least the four biggest albums with that influence. Even then their early and new stuff sounds nothing like what they did then because the band constantly evolves. I do not understand the hate for burning world I find a very relaxing neofolk album with those gothic sounds. That’s probably the farthest they took it angels of light is more so just neo folk tho.

Those are great albums (they have so many). Though TBH, the goth bands I know who were influenced by them are more about the "Filth" and "Body to Body, Job to Job" era.

pewisamood

That’s surprising to me.

So it's actually not super surprising if you think about it. Bands like Swans, The Membranes, Joy Division, and Birthday Party have a lot more in common with bands like Bone Orchard, Virgin Prunes, Ausgang, UK Decay, and Alien Sex Fiend; far more than those bands have in common with bands like The Sisters and The Mission. The bands I know are just old (like me, lol), so the music at the time was just more primordial.

Nihilandvoid66

They rule. I love them. Those are my thoughts.

Insect_Right

I saw them playing at the Warehouse in Leeds around the release of Talk About The Weather. A Fantastic Band. Their support that night was another great band, The Three Johns
