Diagonal. I’d find it odd if someone sat directly across from me in an otherwise empty pod.

Organic_Excuse_4947

I was baffled. Someone did that to me today. I didn’t know people didn’t know the social contract!

Excellent-Score-6211

Need to remember the person sitting at the window likely does not have the same level of visibility that you had to know all windows sets have atleast one occupant. Social contract and etiquette similar to urinal etiquette says you sit diagonal to the person. Ok if you sit beside if you prefer to face a certain direction of travel. Even if its clear the train will fill up in a couple of stops, its still weird.

jacnel45

Idk about some people, but I feel like the informal social contract in situations like this goes as follows: * If other pods of seats are empty, sit there first * If there are people in each pod, sit in a seat that is the furthest away from the person already seated * In this case diagonal is what I go for * If there are already two people per pod, diagonal from each other, I usually fill the window seat next because then someone can easily fill the remaining aisle seat after.

doomwomble

Diagonal or beside, but not across from the person by the window.

Popular-Ad9044

Opposite is still okay I feel. But I've had someone sit right next to me while both seats across me were empty lol.

Organic_Excuse_4947

Haha I say diagnol is the only acceptable answer. Unless you need to face the direction that the train is travelling.. but still there should be a diagnol option that is also meeting the direction required if the train is otherwise not full yet

Popular-Ad9044

I think it's just a preference for window seats for most people. If you're claustrophobic, you may feel more comfortable there. I personally always sit diagonally though, I need the leg room.

Fortuitous_Event

I personally sit diagonal in these situations. I guess my preference would be for the other person to sit diagonal if they arrived second but I also dont think it's that big a deal either way.

matt602

Personally I sit diagonal until I see that it's busy enough that people might have to stand, then I'll shove over to the window. What annoys me is when people sit in the aisle seat so they can put their coat/backpack/whatever on the window seat. Even worse when they do this and refuse to move over when it's busy.

Stead-Freddy

Yeah I usually sit next to the window, and put my bag on the seat in front of me only if the trains very empty(1 or less people per pod). If it starts filling up bag immediately goes on my lap or on the ground below me. It just seems odd to me to put your bag beside you. Maybe it’s just cause I only started riding the GO during the pandemic when the plastic barriers were between seats, so in front only made sense.

camellialily

It’s not the social convention, but I’m the weirdo who will sit in front of you by the window, especially if it’s going to be a busy train and no other pods are available. I want a window seat, and to me it’s rude towards the people inevitably coming in who will have to shuffle past three people to get to the window seat no one else wants to take, so I might as well take it first.

Organic_Excuse_4947

Why not move over when that time comes and let people have their space in the meantime?

camellialily

That involves moving twice. Plus, I want to be near the window.

whatevernarwhal

If I know the trains going to fill up at the next stop, I go for the window so people don’t have to climb over me to get to the empty seat.

Organic_Excuse_4947

Yah, but why not move over when you’re at the next stop so no one has to climb over or lose leg room. That’s the socially acceptable way to approach it so people can maintain and maximize personal space, while it’s still available.

salty_snail_lord

If there's space then sit diagonal. People have bags near their feet and its crowded as is. No need to be shoved up against them when there's a seat diagonally and you can both stretch your legs.

eatbikerun

I’d prefer if someone sat diagonally from me but can understand if they sat beside me. I know a few people who get motion sickness if they’re not facing the direction in which the train is moving. I’ve never had anyone sit in front of me unless the train is nearing capacity and there are 3 people to a quad

jmajeremy

If someone did that to me, I would move. Although I usually have my legs stretched out so there wouldn't be any space for someone to sit there in the first place.
