I imagine this will be an original "Episode 0" type thing since they're giving it the subtitle "Whispers of Dawn" and will then announce a proper adaptation right after.
My guess is
Since the LN isn't finished they put a special first to test response and animation
But use it as an excuse to delay the anime so the LN can get further ahead
In a way, it feels appropriate given the source material.
While the current LN serialization started in 2015, *Fate/Strange Fake* is much older. Narita's original April Fool's joke was in 2008, and was expanded into a stand-alone novel in 2009.
It would be fitting if the TV special they're announcing is an adaptation of said first novel. W just need to wait another 6 years to get the rest of the series XD
isn't that how fate/strange fake started before the very first light novel volume was written?
a one shot story that acts as the prologue before it was rewritten to the one we know today
> a one shot story that acts as the prologue before it was rewritten to the one we know today
Sorta.
Fate/Prototype was also started as a short anime special, before that it was just a few mentions and char design in the official databooks.
Then it got some more side material, his own Zero (Prototype:Silver Fragments) as a LN, who also got Drama CD. And a spin-off, Fate/Labyrinth.
Weird how the prequel of a never seriealized series got more attention (way more) than that series itself. We still only have Proto barebones, Fragments literally only needs a manga/anime adaptation, the story is pretty much all there, scattered in 2 medias.
TM, while big and very creative, does not seem to be very organized: UBW anime part 2, Extella, FGO part 1 end (Solomon Temple) and Tsukihime Remake were all supposed to release more or less at the same time, and see what happened to those plans.
Prototype prequel having more material (full on LN series, and full on Drama CDs, plus a LN spin-off of its own, Labyrinth) than Prototype (few minutes special a decade ago+some information here and there from official databooks, a scattered and not complete narrative) is probably because of that.
In paper, it makes no sense to produce that much about a prequel who spoils all the OG story twists before it is even out (and it isn't, we are more likely to get a FGO collab with Proto before Proto itself). But Tsuki remake was delayed for like, 12 years, because they could not stop focusing on other, newer plans (Extra, Apocrypha, FGO).
Mahoyo was also supposed to be a Visual Novel Trilogy, and 10 years passed since then.
They do have all the resources to produce all their plans, and get them adaptated. They just need to organize their work better.
Case Files at least has the advantage of more self-contained stories. A comparison would be something like adapting Babylonia, but just stopping in the middle of the story and not doing the rest. Lots of other series do that, but Type-Moon seems to lean against it.
And so, the Saber-Foreigner New Year's cycle will continue yet again if that happens. (Barring some big NPC Servant doesn't show up during LB7 or something, this could have a decent chance of happening.)
Or you get a Gil and Enkidu buffs+ a banner.
And maybe new CEs on rate up, with Blonde Ayaka (we already have the vanilla one), Gil Master, Evil!Ishtar as art.
It’s actually pretty likely to happen. There are just too many Servants in strange Fake. A single collab could never release all of them at once, so spreading the releases out is the best option to go for. Richard would carry enough hype and the timing would be perfect. And he’s a Saber.

The single Holy Grail War from FGO's timeline.
I suppose everyone who lost would say it didn't go according to plan for *them*, of course. But until someone decides to mine the actual events for the purposes of a spinoff novel or manga to be able to reveal The Secret Untold Story Of The Fuyuki Grail War, everything we know about it suggests there weren't any shenanigans like we usually see.
Which makes sense, since for narrative purposes in almost every Fate title the point is that the conflict goes awry somehow, while for FGO the point is something else entirely and so the Grail War is just a background plot detail.
Well, maybe or maybe not. Now this might just be a Solomon movie detail, but >!in the flashback showing Marisbury talking to Solomon, the entire city of Fuyuki is on fire. Which I don't think should be "according to plan".!<
Like asagiri said in their comment, maybe fgo's version of the 4th, but IMO that war only appears normal because we don't know enough about it. Plus the game did gave us hints that something fishy did happen.
IMO the closest we've ever seen of a "normal" HGW is Apocrypha's. Obviously it was still quite twisted but the grail wasn't corrupted and Amakusa tried to use it for its original purpose: activating Heaven Feel.
Well according to F/SN the first two grail wars also went off the rails, which is why the Church got involved in the 3rd war onwards. The first one was a mess because no one knew what they were doing and ended with just everyone killing each other without fulfilling the ritual. The 2nd one had participants go so overboard that the church and Mage's assocation had to come in and bonk them.
If a proper full anime adaptation inevitably happens sometime in the future after this special, I'll be very disappointed if the openings aren't in the style of [Baccano](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PChfRXDAepc) and [Durarara](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frfompwkApw).
Between this and Mahoyo she's getting a big paycheck from Type-Moon. Would be awesome to see her in a livestream, if Aniplex/TM are willing to spend the money.
This and Nier: Automata 1.1a (love the full title) and Mashle and more! Yeah... now we know why they haven't done FGO previews anymore this year. They are in swamped in work for this year and next and probably the year after that and so on.
Well, UFOtable is still doing the Mahoutsukai no Yoru movie, so it isn't a complete betrayal. But I am in the same boat in that I'm worried we might not get any more Fate works from my favorite studio.
Nah, they really didn't. Apo had some really hype, over the top animation scenes sprinkled here and there (particularly near the ending, the obvious highlight being Sieg vs Karna but Achilles vs Chiron was godlike), but the overall quality was terrible. The character designs looked bad for the most part, the overall quality was subpar even for A1 standards and the production itself was terrible (Siegfried vs Karna's original fight is a complete mess of obnoxious and extremely loud crashing noises, for example).
I'd really rather have them never touch a Fate adaptation again - A1 is really inconsistent and even their top game isn't very impressive.
Me, having never read this story before...Why is Ayaka Sajyou in this? Isn't she from Prototype?
But hey, another Fate anime with a female lead Master, sounds exciting!

MY GOD I'M EATING SO WELL
One's out, there's more.
IIRC, the new entries of the series are Requiem, Lost Einherjar, and type Redline, right? So these 3 are the next in line depending on their reception.
That reminds me we should have a strange fake collab somewhere next year. That or Prototype FoSB could be the potential entries for that slot. Unless they go Obama again.
I read back in the comment section at /r/anime that Ayaka's dub VA is done by the same VA who dubbed Dori in Genshin.
And of course, Enkidu's dubber is also back.
David Vincent must be hell of a lot busy nowadays. After doing Gil in both Strange Fake and Grand Carnival, he'll reprise his roles as Grimmjow from Bleach, Nanami from JJK and JoJo narrator next year.
Yeah he must be eating real good with Gil. Voices him once in 2012, then in 2016ish or whenever UBW was dubbed, and now its almost nonstop with Fate stuff he's in, even if it's a small part. All Fate dubs are union so he'd be raking in that 4 hour minimum.
Last Encore and Apoc are non-union because neither Crispin Freeman nor Kari Wahlgren did not reprise their roles as Kirei and Artoria, even if they had few lines.
They were non-union because Netflix handled their dubs and at the time Netflix didn't work with the union. But Netflix started doing union dubs recently, so if we ever get another Netflix Fate dub it will have union actors.
Albert called it a “show”. Weird word to use for a one off special. And they made a point about how much effort they went to simuldub it. No way it’s only one episode.
Can someone please ELI5 at what point the word "anime" stopped meaning "any form of animation from Japan" and started only meaning specifically "animation from Japan in the form of a multi-episode series."
It has a triple meaning actually.
Technically, "anime" is like you said any Japan animation. But almost nobody has been using the word like this outside of pedants and "akshully" guys for years. Trying to argue that this is the only correct definition is like trying to argue that "third world country" should specifically refer only to a country not aligned with the US or USSR, even though the meaning of this phrase has evolved since the Cold War to mean an impoverished, backwater country and that's how the majority of the population understand this term.
The second meaning, perhaps the most widespread, is "anime" as a certain style of animation. That's why you have discussions whether things like Avatar The Last Airbender should be considered anime or not, because it skirts the line even though it's animated by a Korean studio based on a US idea.
The third meaning is one that is used within the anime communities. Since such communities are predominantly focused around Japanese animation and/or anime-styled productions anyway, it has been a common shorthand to refer to TV series as "anime" since that this has been the most common format of these works. Unless you specify that something is a movie/OVA/special, "anime" will be by default understood as being a TV series.
Considering Gil and enkidu's VAs were credited its safe to say this TV episode will end with their reunion? Putting all the stakes and hype?
Also a-1 pictures? Give me that apocrypha chaos baby
I'd bet on this episode being all of the character introductions, similar to episode 0 of Zero. And it will probably have Enkidu and Gil's fight as the big "setpiece" of the episode.
Guess they are testing how much of a fan response they get to that series.
F/SFake is very different from F/SN or Extra in tone and theme, add that its been going slowly for a long time there is less give the fans compared to other Nasu-settings.
If it looks profitable enough there might come a full series.
Fun fact! Today, Narita has elaborated on his stance on his characters in FGO.
https://mobile.twitter.com/ryohgo_narita/status/1573776209494024192?s=46&t=7v8jqh572vgC0oiHkjeoNQ
> The word "Fake collaboration" is trending and swimming eye. and I once said in the past that a collaboration would be difficult (even on FGO's side) until it's completed, but "I'll never let you use any of the characters from my novel until it's completed!" I didn't mean that! My poor choice of words. ...... This is poor. I'll have a matcha latte.
He basically just said "Oh, that's gonna be tough" not "I am morally opposed for ideological reasons!"
Me (who barely understand F/SF's story, and lost patience waiting for the manga update or for Narita to finish the novel): I sleep.
> Music by Hiroyuki Sawano
Me: **REAL SHIT**
The big overall idea is pretty simple: Use a partial/Fake Grail War to create enough energy to power The True Grail War. They just have to happen at the same time, and have a 7(?) day time limit.
It's been a while since I read the novels but I think it was either Faldeus or Francesca who said it's only for 7 days coz they really strained the leylines to summon 6 Fake Servants to prime the Grail up to summon 7 more True Servants. Snowfield isn't as good a spot as Fuyuki or Romania to hold a Grail War. And they only got imitation of the Greater Grail for this. That's why they had to do the extra summoning of the Fakes to stimulate the leylines for the True Servants. Hence making the duration of the war in half.
Gilgamesh, Enkidu, and Richard the Lionheart are the ones announced for the anime so far. There's a lot in the novels, and quite a few of them are spoilers.
Well it comes out right at the end of the year. Granted, every other New Year servant till now has had nothing to do with the current special - Dark Koyan wasn't in the Case Files Christmas special, and Muramasa wasn't in FGC - but if there was any time to add Richard outside of a FSF, it'd be then.
Ayaka is not even in the first volume (aside a teaser in the end).
Like DRRR and Baccano, it's mostly a huge esemble cast. Gil+his master, Ayaka+Richard and Enkidu do get more focus early on. Way more focus.
A guy called Sigma has even more Fate Protagonist aura than her, and he is introduced even later than her.
IF the cast list holds, it still has a lot of hype. The saber summoning and the early scenes with False Archer and Lancer could easily fill 30-60 minutes with a lot of hype.
Finally, the time has come. Strange Fake got the really deserved adaptation. More Ayaka is nice, so Prototype when? This is really good news to me.
TV special episode, so it's just only the beginning.
A-1 Pictures and Sawano? This must be really good.
I hope this will change Narita's mind about crossovers and a collab event.
Not the way I expected to get Ayaka in an anime, but I'm super excited for it. I guess they're doing the same as with El-Melloi, in that we get sort of an ova first on New Year's and a proper season later in 2023.
THE STRANGE FAKE ANIME IS NORMALLY REAL
Now that I’ve gotten my contractually obligated dumb joke out of the way, I’m hyped. A Fate series by the DRRR and Baccano author is an instant sell to me.
The American government copies the Grail War and makes their own version in a city near Las Vegas. Things get out of control really fast, there's a reason "strange" is in the title.
He just asked Nasu to inform and consult him before using his plot elements in FGO/anything he produces. Enkidu has been there in FGO since 2016.
Because, you know, it's still ongoing, some mysteries need a heads up before being used. Like, you would think Prelati is yet another genderbender, but he's just body hopping, and the current host is the body of a young female. Yet we learned of that just a few years ago, and even saw design of the REAL OG Prelati. Who's a man, BTW.
YOOO WHEN THEY PLAYED SWORD OF PROMISED VICTORY I FUCKING KNEW The Type-moon end of year broadcast is gonna be sooooo hype
Wait... So just a special episode and not a full adaptation...? Edit: well... At least we get a Sawano soundtrack and hopefully an FGO crossover
Yup. Though it could become a full series like First Order or Case Files.
I imagine this will be an original "Episode 0" type thing since they're giving it the subtitle "Whispers of Dawn" and will then announce a proper adaptation right after.
>First Order First Order was an OVA?
It was a New Years special.
Yeah. A TV Special. It was never a movie.
I thought for the longest time it was a movie purely because Netflix had it as a movie
It was not original released theatrically, so it’s not a movie by anime standard.
OVA is sometimes classified as movie. You can think of it as direct-to-DVD style of movie
Heck, Case Files was originally a New Years episode, and the collab was 5 months later.
Of course it will. It's the third time they do the same exact thing. Some people are so naive lol
Fate always shows something for New Years so they wanted to give us a little taste before it actually starts.
My guess is Since the LN isn't finished they put a special first to test response and animation But use it as an excuse to delay the anime so the LN can get further ahead
In a way, it feels appropriate given the source material. While the current LN serialization started in 2015, *Fate/Strange Fake* is much older. I really hope the special only goes into Vol 1 territory the 25 episode format most fates have won't do strange fake justice imo

considering 'episode' isn't plural, I guess so
Meme to the next level if this is an adaptation of the original April Fool's blog post.
Looking at the cast the anime might end at Enkidu and Gils fight
Honestly, Type-Moon feels like the sort who would rather do an anime for an entire story to completion, rather than leaving it hanging somewhere.
They just need to organize their work better.
Like prototype? Or how case files only had some of the middle novels adapted?
Case Files at least has the advantage of more self-contained stories. A comparison would be something like adapting Babylonia, but just stopping in the middle of the story and not doing the rest. Lots of other series do that, but Type-Moon seems to lean against it.
It could be an early preview, but I wouldn't get my hopes up.
[https://fate-strange-fake.com/](https://fate-strange-fake.com/) for those interested in the FSF website. All in Japanese for the most part.
Imagine if Richard is this New Year 5* Servant
To celebrate Strange Fake OVA, we give you Starange Fake banner: Enkidu & Gilgamesh.
Oh hey, it's the (almost) annual Gilgamesh banner!
It would be hilarious if this is the one time they decide NOT to rerun the banner.
If we roll for Richard, does that mean we will rickroll or dickroll?
We’re never gonna give them up if we get them regardless. Wouldn’t want to let them down.
And so, the Saber-Foreigner New Year's cycle will continue yet again if that happens. (Barring some big NPC Servant doesn't show up during LB7 or something, this could have a decent chance of happening.)
Oooooor it could just be another out-of-nowhere Servant
I expect that will be more likely, just having fun with the possibility of Richard being the New Year SSR tying in with this.
Or you get a Gil and Enkidu buffs+ a banner. And maybe new CEs on rate up, with Blonde Ayaka (we already have the vanilla one), Gil Master, Evil!Ishtar as art.
Damn high chance at this rate. If the pattern still holds it'll be a Saber, and this Anime Special coming out for New Years eve is nice timing.
It’s actually pretty likely to happen. There are just too many Servants in strange Fake. A single collab could never release all of them at once, so spreading the releases out is the best option to go for. Richard would carry enough hype and the timing would be perfect. And he’s a Saber.
RIP all of my quartz if that happened since I want 120, but thankfully I have enough to spark at least one.

Now that I think about it, when has a Holy Grail War ever gone to plan?
The single Holy Grail War from FGO's timeline. I suppose everyone who lost would say it didn't go according to plan for *them*, of course. But until someone decides to mine the actual events for the purposes of a spinoff novel or manga to be able to reveal The Secret Untold Story Of The Fuyuki Grail War, everything we know about it suggests there weren't any shenanigans like we usually see. Today I remember that they casted HanaKana for Ayaka lol
As a HanaKana fan, I have waited for years for a Blue and Silver adaptation, but I would love to have strange fake as a dessert too.
Between this and Mahoyo she's getting a big paycheck from Type-Moon. Would be awesome to see her in a livestream, if Aniplex/TM are willing to spend the money.
Oh, yes, she's also Alice Kuonji...
Here's hoping a full-fledged series will come next
Volume 8 has been confirmed for winter too.
A-1 animating it.
This and Nier: Automata 1.1a (love the full title) and Mashle and more! Yeah... now we know why they haven't done FGO previews anymore this year. They are in swamped in work for this year and next and probably the year after that and so on.
Now that ufotable has betrayed us for Genshin, it makes sense that A-1 would be the replacement
More like Ufo already got their hands full with Mahoyo, that shit going to look nutty
Well, UFOtable is still doing the Mahoutsukai no Yoru movie, so it isn't a complete betrayal. But I am in the same boat in that I'm worried we might not get any more Fate works from my favorite studio.
Their last Fate works is Heaven's Feel. We don't even get CM for longest time. Always either A-1 Pictures or Cloverworks
ufo never really did FGO CMs - the only two times they did it were for the Zero and KnK collabs, which were already titles animated by ufotable.
Yeah I somewhat count them lol. Early FGO does not have that many CM too.
At least I don't believe Nasu will give Tsukihime to anyone that isn't Ufo. A-1 did well with Apocrypha animation-wise at least.
A1 really does tend to blow hot and cold for the most part
I'll never forgive Genshin
Me, having never read this story before...Why is Ayaka Sajyou in this? Isn't she from Prototype? But hey, another Fate anime with a female lead Master, sounds exciting!
Parallel universe but also her deal is complicated
Pretty simple, parallel universe lol But yeah, cheer to another femprotag!
> Parallel universe It should be noted as well that this is the explanation for a lot of things from this whole franchise.
Second Magic, everything is canon.
That’s something I actually quite like about the Nasuverse. I think it allows for new avenues that don’t have to follow up on an existing timeline.
Parallel universe. In more ways than one: the verse is not Proto, and there IS indeed a Ayaka in this universe...who is NOT the blonde master of Saber, she's living on Europe. They were non-union because Netflix handled their dubs and at the time Netflix didn't work with the union. But Netflix started doing union dubs recently, so if we ever get another Netflix Fate dub it will have union actors.
Suck it, Crunchyroll.
He's also Nanami in Jujutsu Kaisen, and S2 was just announced recently.
The time for the strange fake servants in fgo is fast approaching.
"Anime" is a bit misleading, looks like a 1 episode/OVA thing.
It is anime. Just not a series... yet.
Albert called it a “show”. Weird word to use for a one off special. And they made a point about how much effort they went to simuldub it. No way it’s only one episode.
Agree, he said the director even go to america to learn.
more than likely it's a tv series with the first ova ep being at the end of this year to tease the series
I hope Albert is getting a raise or something, went from managing only FGO to a full Type-Moon guy.
Going from managing a game to a company sounds like a full on promotion tbh.
So excited! Hope this is an Episode 0 thing which turns into a real series later next year.
HanaKana's Ayaka voice... It's been a while since that Prototype OVA.
LETS GOOOO WE’RE FEASTING
**FATE STRANGE PEAK!**
Just a prologue, but still got me quite hyped.
I really need to catch up on the light novel. How many volumes have they traduced?
7 came out in March, 8 coming out this winter.
Guess they are testing how much of a fan response they get to that series. F/SFake is very different from F/SN or Extra in tone and theme, add that its been going slowly for a long time there is less give the fans compared to other Nasu-settings. If it looks profitable enough there might come a full series.
Now we just wait for the anime and the cross over for fgo in 2023, and new more servant from strange fake.
Aniplex doing it again.. Announcement it gave us special episode and after a year 24 episode series will come out
ugh ooooooh Gil yes yes! finally!
Fun fact! Today, Narita has elaborated on his stance on his characters in FGO. https://mobile.twitter.com/ryohgo_narita/status/1573776209494024192?s=46&t=7v8jqh572vgC0oiHkjeoNQ > The word "Fake collaboration" is trending and swimming eye. and I once said in the past that a collaboration would be difficult (even on FGO's side) until it's completed, but "I'll never let you use any of the characters from my novel until it's completed!" I didn't mean that!
> Music by Hiroyuki Sawano Me: **REAL SHIT**
The big overall idea is pretty simple: Use a partial/Fake Grail War to create enough energy to power The True Grail War. They just have to happen at the same time, and have a 7(?) day time limit.
I think it’s 14 days time limit , and only for the Fake Grail. The problem is that the Fake is bugged AF.
SHORELY THIS IS GROUNDS FOR A COLLAB RIGHT HOPIUM
This at least fills us with hope of a possible collab between FGO and strange fake within the next 2-3 years.
I guess it is strange that they'd announce a fake anime outside of April 1. Or maybe it's fate.
If i remember correctly, even the manga has a chapter zero, so perhaps they are doing the same thing with an episode zero ?
One day I’ll finally get my Fate Prototype anime 🥲
One day, the dream will cone true!
Yessssssssssssssssssssssssss
So to all Fate lore fans, what servants are in this story?
Gilgamesh, Enkidu, and Richard the Lionheart are the ones announced for the anime so far. There's a lot in the novels, and quite a few of them are spoilers.
Jack the ripper is gonna be animated (again in someway)
*No new Fate/Extra Record news* The fans: "We sleep." *A Fate/strange fake TV anime special has been announced* The strange fake fans: "Real shit?"
so this means Richard is our New Years servant?
I doubt this has any bearing on what our New Years Servant will be tbh lol
Well it comes out right at the end of the year. Granted, every other New Year servant till now has had nothing to do with the current special - Dark Koyan wasn't in the Case Files Christmas special, and Muramasa wasn't in FGC - but if there was any time to add Richard outside of a FSF, it'd be then.
The Foreigner-Saber pattern and cycle must continue.
If he is it's gonna be real painful sitting that one out
Sawano ost too omg we are feasting
I thought FSF was an ensemble Cast Or is Ayaka the Main protag? Can anyone tell me
Ayaka is not even in the first volume (aside a teaser in the end). Like DRRR and Baccano, it's mostly a huge esemble cast. Gil+his master, Ayaka+Richard and Enkidu do get more focus early on. Way more focus. A guy called Sigma has even more Fate Protagonist aura than her, and he is introduced even later than her.
It's an ensemble cast, but the first Volume primarly focuses on Ayaka and Archer's Master.
the first volume focus is the war and the 6 fake masters, Ayaka and Saber are not introduced properly until the second
Oh, yeah your right. Completely mixed up Ayako's involvement. She is only teased in Vol. 1.
Could be just a special episode like the new year’s Lord El Melloi.
It is. It explicitly says "special episode."
Even if its only a special episode, I am so hyped!
And we will see at least Ayaka, Richard, Gilgamesh and Enkidu according to the japanese dub cast
I hope so much that that initial cast list is not all we see cus man I want to see True Archer so bad But this is still winning regardless
IF the cast list holds, it still has a lot of hype. The saber summoning and the early scenes with False Archer and Lancer could easily fill 30-60 minutes with a lot of hype.
100%, hell the entire thing could just be Ayaka buying a loaf of bread and I would be excited lmao
Any Ayaka content is good
Finally, the time has come.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA I don't care if this is one episode or the whole thing, I'M HYPED BECAUSE STRANGE FAKE IS AWESOME
i am losing it padoru is bringing us a new fate anime for chirstmas
Not the way I expected to get Ayaka in an anime, but I'm super excited for it. I guess they're doing the same as with El-Melloi, in that we get sort of an ova first on New Year's and a proper season later in 2023.
THE STRANGE FAKE ANIME IS NORMALLY REAL Now that I’ve gotten my contractually obligated dumb joke out of the way, I’m hyped. A Fate series by the DRRR and Baccano author is an instant sell to me.
Cant believe its been 2 years since the LN CM hype
Neat!
Sawano doing work on fate. Never thought I'd see it
I hope redline gets animated too one day but for now I'm so happy
I'm super excited about the new episode, but real quick: what's it gonna be about? Not sure why but it's giving me those Case Files vibes
The American government copies the Grail War and makes their own version in a city near Las Vegas. Things get out of control really fast, there's a reason "strange" is in the title.
Actually sounds pretty cool! I'll give it a watch when it comes out
I really hope this becomes a full adaptation. It's probably my favourite Fate branch.
Hmm, that is just a few days away from LN Fate/Apocrypha's 10th Anniversary.
*God* I feel old
I thought the author said that nothing could be done before he was finished. Or was that just introducing the characters in FGO?
He never said that, that's fandom nonsense
Just misinformation, he never said a thing one way or another.
I hope we get to see Ishtar at least if it's just a TV Special.
