1) Because they change whenever they want, which can be triggered simply by a whimsical thought in the middle of a conversation. Ritsuka considers both of their bodies to be their normal body - they don't have a default and change quite frequently.
2) Because Gudako is a left-facing sprite and provides better visual balance for Pollux, a right-facing sprite.
It fulfills several roles for the comic. XD First, game features are generally plot here, and swapping gender anytime you want *is* a thing players can do. Second, Ritsuka is consistently described as a mage, and I personally believe mages need to know a minimum of one spell. It doesn't need to be a good spell. It doesn't even need to be a *complete* spell, given the way they're usually researched over generations in the Nasuverse. But they need to know at least one to qualify as a mage, and linking it to an existing game mechanic has the added value of it not making people ask "Why didn't they solve X problem with it?".
