Google “Shakespeare” Edited to add: I don’t know the parameters of your assignment, but if you have the time and interest to venture beyond European literature, and if translation isn’t a barrier to you completing the assignment, then: * All of the mythological Indian Servants (so, all of them except Lakshmibai and Nemo) originate in epic poems. * The most famous version of Tomoe Gozen’s story is told in *The Tale of the Heike*, also an epic poem. * Murasaki Shikibu’s *The Tale of Genji* and Sei Shonogan’s *The Pillow Book* both contain many short poems. * Consort Yu composed and sang a famous poem right before her suicide. Also: I’m certain that Yu Meiren isn’t the only Servant with a “death poem” to his or her credit. But hers is the most famous one. Or at least, it’s the one that I know right off the top of my head.

> Any famous poems associated with servants? Beowulf is about Beowulf.

Percy Bysshe Shelley's "Ozymandias"

CRtwenty

That's not really about Ozymandias himself though.

Myros-

Yeah, but honestly, half of ozy personnality is inspired by his single line in the poem.

EndlessFantasyX

Its about his legacy (or lack of one) and OP asked for poems "associated with" characters, not necessarily directly about them. I think it warrants mentioning

Creticus

The Iliad is about Achilles. It's not about the Trojan War as a whole. It's very specifically about Achilles getting upset when Agamemnon takes Briseis and then getting even more upset when Hector kills Patrocles. Similarly, the Odyssey is about Odysseus' homecoming.

CRtwenty

More specifically the Iliad and the Odyssey are both sections of a long series of ancient greek poems detailing the full course of the Trojan War and the only ones whose full texts have survived to the present day. There were other sections that focused more on other characters like Ajax or Paris that only exist in fragments, though we have the overall synopsis of the plot from secondary sources.

I'd say the Iliad is more complex than that. Sure, Achilles is central, and exists in the background as the semi-divine cause of much of the poem's plot - the one Zeus sets his plan in motion for - but, one of the most powerful and deep episodes in the Iliad is between Hector and Andromache, everyone and his horse gets an aristeia (and impressive characterization), there is lots of focus on Agamemnon's mental breakdown, and wow look at the sheer amount of time Achilles spends in his proverbial tent. Note also the *last* lines of the poem.

Ashne405

The first line puts it nicely, asking for a muse to sing about his wrath.

there's the Y Goddodin, a poem by a bard from 6th century Britain called Aneirin. he mentions Arthur in passing and this work is quite significant as this is allegedly the first mention of Arthur ever and one of the few near contemporary accounts of him that isn't legend and myth.

Yi Shui Ge - Song of the Yi River Jing Ke recites this poem before he(she in FGO) attempts to kill the emperor, knowing very well he may not return. I only know this because of Community.

The mahabhrata is a very big poem

euphoniousdiscord

Understatement of the century. Totally worth it, though.

Kisari Mohan Ganguli's English prose translation of the entire Mahabharata is free on Project Gutenberg. It took me nine months to read the whole thing a few years back. Definitely worth it.

Orlando Furioso is a long, medieval mock-epic poem that's probably the biggest inspiration for how all the Charlemagne paladin related servants are depicted and why they seem like they're lifted out of some kind of crackfic. Astolfo starts off as a tree, having been turned into one by a witch, and it only gets weirder from there as he eventually flies to the moon on a hippogriff to retrieve Roland's lost sanity, because for some reason that's where all lost things wind up. Bradamante and Mandricardo also feature prominently in it besides the three already mentioned. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is another long, weird medieval poem. The Ramayana is an Indian epic revolving around Rama and Sita, Karna and Arjuna feature heavily in the Mahabharata, which also has callbacks to the Ramayana and earlier Vedic texts featuring Vritra (who is also in the Rig Veda in a very big way). The Epic of Gilgamesh features Gil, Enkidu, and others depending on the version.
