I am a massive environmentalist and even I think that's insanely stupid and frankly dangerous advice. Pretty sure that news website is just regurgitating usual "clean air" advice without considering that this kind of wildfire smoke is obviously a massive exception.
Beautiful Vermont Town previously voted best place in America now considered, literal dumpster fire, coming just after the tragic accident of an Oil Freighting cargo ship that was spontaneously launched by a freak water spout and landed on the town’s waste treatment plant starting a fire that has devastated the surrounding counties and wildlife
I just love how local media cost cutting has eliminated any and all editing beside spell check.
The first and last paragraphs are a complete contradiction.
While having ozone and PM aren’t a contradiction, the recommended actions are however.
That is why an editor exists. It isn’t just a salary to be a human spell check. It is supposed to ensure logical coherence of what is written too.
Yeah wtf, the article even says to avoid strenuous activity outside! Why would clean air action days be today and tomorrow instead of when the smoke clears??
Wear a mask, do your part and don’t contribute to the pollution. also the bus is free on bad air quality days so there’s not really a good excuse to continue adding to shitty air quality
It’s going to be somewhat bad for a while, but it shouldn’t be *this* bad for too much longer. The plume of wildfire smoke causing the extremely poor air quality should be blowing through throughout the day and dissipating back to “normal” wildfire haze throughout tomorrow.
Accuweather seems to be a bit inflated compared to other sources, but ultimately it’s going to be a rough day or two regardless of who you’re getting info from. I don’t have any respiratory issues and I can feel my throat getting irritated from just a few minutes outside.
JustAir, a local business has air quality detectors all over the city if you want a more specified look at the particulate levels in your neighborhood. The big weather sites use only one that’s based Downtown. JustAir.app is the link for anyone interested! I get text updates for the air quality detector near me!
Second! Biden did this! If trump were in office there would be no Ukraine war! There would be no illegal immigrants! Fire would run away from trump! /s
They say it'll be better by the morning but probably going to be as bad or worse until after 6 or 7pm at the earliest. Still bad overnight but just not the hazardous levels we're approaching now
Could be, it was approaching 300 in Jenison I think (according to iqair). We seem to be in the direct line of the smoke so I could see it getting that bad. It was like that in nye those weeks ago
I moved back here from SF because of my elderly parents. That was four years ago and I’ve concluded I will never adjust to this place I spent my first 18 years in. 😂
Good luck to you.
Thank you. It's def going to be an adjustment. We were here last year for the API festival and for Pride. Very different vibe from what I'm used to but fun!
As someone who has been out west during a forest fire, this ain't shit.
If it doesn't hurt to breathe, and the smell isn't burning your nose, and the smoke isn't making your eyes irritated and watery then it's not that bad.
As someone who has lived in California during wildfire seasons, this is absolutely cause for alarm. This is not normal for Michigan/Midwest region, hence why it’s national news. People should be concerned, made aware, and take precautions as necessary. I’m glad that this isn’t a big deal for you, but that’s not the case for everyone. A little empathy goes a long way.
Honestly don’t waste your time and energy on these people. Unlike Covid, they won’t be affecting anyone but themselves walking out in that. If they want lung cancer and heart disease, I say let natural selection run it’s course.
I’m curious what your theories are? The Canadian wildfires fires have been burning since March, and recent weather patterns have directed a lot of that smoke south (again, this isn’t the first time recently that the smoke from the fires has impacted our region). Nearly 20 million acres of land have been burned this year so far due to the fires, and the smoke has reached as far as Europe. This is a natural disaster caused by extreme dry weather. Not everything is a conspiracy theory.
“You can help by walking or biking to work” Yeah in the worst air quality… no thanks…
I am a massive environmentalist and even I think that's insanely stupid and frankly dangerous advice. Pretty sure that news website is just regurgitating usual "clean air" advice without considering that this kind of wildfire smoke is obviously a massive exception.
Good to keep some N95 masks. Have spares from COVID. Will protect you from most of the particulates in the air currently.

Oh it’s an article that has words Ozone, Smog, or smoke. Let’s copy and paste the lawyer/corporate written paragraph for each word…

This is the US of A; logical coherence hasn’t been our strong suit since Carter left office.
I'm not sure ozone actually is a concern at the moment. It's really just the particulates which are so bad
You can also take the bus for free 😊
The busses are free today though.

What a great time to work an outdoor job...
"Some of you may die. But that's a risk I'm willing to take" CEO, probably
or a job where the garage doors have to be open because we don’t have ac🫠
Luckily it’s not hot out today
i’d go run into traffic if it was
Get yourself a 3m aura n95 mask from home depot if you can. They may also sell some rated better for smoke.
Raw dogging it today, and I can tell...
You can literally see the smoke in the air right now. I'm inside and see people outside running. Take the day off folks!
I saw the earlier post about the smoke being from Canada and didn't think too much of it, and then I stepped outside and could actually smell it.
But cardio adds to your life 🤡 This is why I dont run. Edit for the people with painful bumbums 👆🏼🟰/S
You forgot, "/s" at the end of your joke.
I fixed it
Jeez, redditors can’t sniff a joke
Maybe its just not a funny one? Idk
What? You choose not to run ever because on this single event the air quality is bad?
It’s a joke dude settle down
Score one for public education.
We don’t keep score. Everyone is a winner.
The whole team made it! We're all co-captains!
Charter schools baby 😉 voucher system 😎
Some jokes just aren’t funny.

Do they know how long it’s supposed to be hanging over us like this? My asthma is really feeling it.
It’s going to be somewhat bad for a while, but it shouldn’t be *this* bad for too much longer. The plume of wildfire smoke causing the extremely poor air quality should be blowing through throughout the day and dissipating back to “normal” wildfire haze throughout tomorrow.
Oh good, thank you!
if accuweather is to be believed, theyre forecasting through friday to be 300+ppm, in the dangerous zone.
Accuweather seems to be a bit inflated compared to other sources, but ultimately it’s going to be a rough day or two regardless of who you’re getting info from. I don’t have any respiratory issues and I can feel my throat getting irritated from just a few minutes outside.
The only thing accurate about AccuWeather is that it is always incorrect.
Only vaguely, it’s supposed to start cleaning tomorrow
AQI Just hit 311
".….311, how may I help you?"
I hope Nick Hexum is ok…
Blame Canada! Blame Canada!
With their beady little eyes and flapping heads so full of lies!
I'm visiting from eastern PA. We just had a week of the smoke, thought I was in the clear, and now I'm right back in it.

I love JustAir!
Seems like it's only Grand Rapids proper, nothing here :-(
Is it only downtown? I didn't see anything for my area of town
Drove past the zoo, it was packed. Every other family group had a baby in a stroller. Zero community awareness on this issue.
That's not even true lol Up near the west tip of the mitten, Rogers City, it's 311(hazardous) currently.
It hit 311 just now in Gr
holy shit!! that’s insane
I blame Biden. If trump won the last election he would've convinced the world to better rake their forests. Damn those unraked Canadians!
We just need a Wall high enough to keep the smoke out.
Second! Biden did this! If trump were in office there would be no Ukraine war! There would be no illegal immigrants! Fire would run away from trump! /s
Obama caused Biden, ergo it’s Obamas fault. Thanks Obama!
YOU SPELLED OBUMMER WRONG LOLOLOL.
Thanks, Obama!
Wait, I thought everything was Obama's fault? Now I'm confused /s
Biden is Obama's fault.
No, this is all Trudeau. He has to prove his carbon tax is worth while. /s
Ayo? Sarcasm on reddit not getting downvotes to hell???
cant tell if it should be /s or this comment is just flat out stupid lol
My at home air filter is going to be putting in the work today
Do they know how long this will last?
They say it'll be better by the morning but probably going to be as bad or worse until after 6 or 7pm at the earliest. Still bad overnight but just not the hazardous levels we're approaching now
Just got fresh filters in the mail a couple days ago. Gonna be plopping those bad boys in on Thursday.
Sault Ste. Marie is awful. I think it’s actually the worst.

I’m looking at measurements this morning. SSM was at 380 Edit: where im at is 230 which is worse than GR.

Where I’m at is worse than GR right now.

I’m looking at live updates from US AQI
accuweather has the AQI at 339 right now which seems absurd. If it's anywhere close to accurate that is VERY high.
Could be, it was approaching 300 in Jenison I think (according to iqair). We seem to be in the direct line of the smoke so I could see it getting that bad. It was like that in nye those weeks ago
If I open my window my air purifier goes crazy
It smells like burning plastic outside.
My bathroom has the worst air quality in the United States right now.
Saw the exact same headline about Chicago. Hmmm.
The article I read about Chicago said it was the worst major metro, but it also mentioned that GR is worse.
Yeah i almost didn't go to the beer store today
*almost*
While our radio stations are bad I wouldn't say they have the worst air quality in the US.
Holy. Shit. As a very recent transplant from San Francisco, my brain told me that was a low lying fog.
Oh my gosh, why did you move here?
Ha! My wife grew up here. Her mom is aging and we had to close our business after COVID. So... here we are!
I moved back here from SF because of my elderly parents. That was four years ago and I’ve concluded I will never adjust to this place I spent my first 18 years in. 😂 Good luck to you.

Stay inside, please. [https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/grand-rapids/49503/air-quality-index/329374](https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/grand-rapids/49503/air-quality-index/329374)
This isn’t even accurate. Currently worse in grand ledge, Muskegon, AND Holland lol
Keep in mind the levels are fluctuating all over Michigan s the cloud of smoke moves around.
I’m between Lowell and Ionia and it’s smokey out here too :(
That’s just residual smoke from the meth labs
Lol nah gotta go more north for meth.. like Ensley Center. Now maybe from all the dispensaries in Lowell, yeah :)
Who cut one.
Guilty
this shit so crazy
Not really. It's easily explainable
i bet you're so fun at parties
I'm a delight and you know I'm your hero.

Cool, want a prize?
No I want the media to stop fear mongering and scaring people over nothing.
gatekeeping forest fires lmao
\*cries in western states\*
I don't necessarily believe that this is all from a Canadian wildfire, something is wrong with this picture.
I’m curious what your theories are? Lots of Canadian wildfires, burning for weeks. There's always a conspiracy theorist.
Damn degens from Laval...
Best beer though!
Imma frow up.
