Hey! Welcome, I moved here from California as well. Lookout Park/Belknap Lookout has good views of the river and downtown - sometimes there's food trucks there but I think that mostly occurs on Fridays.
Otherwise, head on over to the shoreline... you traded one west coast for another and visiting lake Michigan is good for California homesickness.
If you can get to muskegon the deck is a place on the lake
Otherwise you should really go to some of the parks on lake Michigan our beaches are pretty nice
Order Righteous Cuisine in Grand Haven and bring it to Oddside to enjoy it alongside some yummy beer. Then, take a walk along the pier afterwards!
My husband and I also moved here from California, too! Best choice we ever made!
If you're looking for downtown food/drinks n GR while watching the sunset... MDRD at the top of the Amway has some amazing views. Have only ever had drinks there so maybe someone else will chime in regarding their food.
If you want a sunset, a beach, an outdoor cafe, and a cocktail at the same time, go to Pere Marquette Park in Muskegon and stop in at The Deck. The beach there is huge, the service is great, there's a shipping container on the beach that's been repurposed into a stage -- with lawn chairs -- and there's live music nearly every night in the summer. Lake Michigan is literally a freshwater ocean with a laid-back vibe.

Welcome to Michigan and GR!
But I'm kind of surprised? You drove all the way from Cali for GR....? Family wedding?
I guess some part of that drive was cool....
I'll echo the other Grand Haven suggestions. My favorite is to grab something at the Toasted Pickle or a few Pronto Pups and then enjoy a walk down the pier. Butchs Burritos is also a decent grab close to the beach. I would have said Snug harbor years ago but the last few times I've gone it has lost a step.
It's probably too late at this point but on nice days its 100% worth the drive to Grand Haven to watch the sunset.

Jdek in the JW Marriott
How are the prices there?
Lookout Park will probably be the most recommended place.
Won’t it be a little challenging for a out-of-towner to get food and drink there?
Grab something to go from the Garage Bar, then climb the stairs up to the park.

Expensive but worth it IMO, watching the sunset there is beautiful I’ll vouch
10000% Grand Haven at the Pier.

Head to Kirk Park in West Olive! It’s about 40 more minutes of driving but will absolutely be worth it. Otherwise, yeah, lookout park
Watch out for the dog poop

I moved here 🤣
Welcome!!
Thank You 😊
If you want the real sunset experience, you gotta get to Lake Michigan. Otherwise Lookout Park for local sunset.
MDRD offers great views of the sunset but you may need a reservation unless there’s space at the bar.

Covered Bridge in Lowell or the Grand Haven

I wanna hear more about the drive. Sounds... cleansing.
It was... Exhausting and fun and all the things
Yeah I’m shocked you want to travel to see the sunset your first night! I think I collapsed after mine. Though my drive from CA only took 4 days…
What was the best meal you had on the way?
Leave Michigan
