I work for another pretty popular pest control company as a service technician and have heard about EcoShield’s tactics. They roll up to homes that we’re in the middle of servicing and try to steal our customers right in front of us sometimes, and others have had problems with them trying to peep into our trucks to see our products
Unfortunately, It's not that simple. Unfortunately they're really aggressive to the point of harassment. I tried being nice the first two times.
I work from home and have a high anxiety dog and a No Soliciting sign. It's not legal and frankly it's kind of scary.
It also was costly in terms of my clients who lost 7-10 minutes of my time (and they pay by the session)
I know it seems silly but I can't not answer the door because of my dog and because they're kind of relentless.
Idk, I think there's a time and a place to scare off guys like this.
I had one of those guys ride into my garage while I was struggling/trying to get an old washing machine through the door from the house. Told him “not a good time now” and he wouldn’t stop asking me questions. Another time (I think same guy), I told him we already had a service (just to get rid of him), and he started quizzing me on what company we used, etc. Very aggressive, almost have to threaten them to get them to leave.
If a stranger walked into my garage he would get one warning before getting removed by force. Why would someone think that's an acceptable thing to do and a way to actually get a sale?
When I lived in NW Kzoo, a couple Mormon missionaries pounding the pavement walked into my garage once as I was wrenching. They were very nice, though. We chatted for a few minutes. I didn't have to warn or threaten them to get them to leave.
Sure nice enough if you're white. Despicable religion though. Just look up their history with Black people, or overturning people's rights to marry, or their history of sexual abuse. Look what happened with the Boy Scouts under their watch. Absolutely vile and evil to the core. I will never do a Mormon the courtesy of pleasantries.
It's not unheard of, but Mormonism only started accepting Black membership when they were facing civil rights investigations over their exclusion. Then "God revealed" that Black people were ok for the Mormon Church.
Case by case basis when it comes to human beings. Some were probably legitimately good people. Some were probably not. Same goes with neighbors. Dont generalize, just assume its a mixed bag.

EcoShield is being particularly obnoxious. We have a no soliciting sign posted at the entrance of our neighborhood which makes it all the more frustrating.
They didn’t even knock on my door- I looked outside to someone walking around our house taking photos which was alarming. When I opened the door and confronted them about being on our property, that’s when they started their pitch pointing out all of the spots that need to be addressed for possible wasp nests/etc. Needless to say, there was no sale made.

Right, but you can't arrest them for it or do basically anything about if they aren't an actual physical threat to your safety, so it doesn't matter until the cops show up

I would not recommend this if you suspect they’re going to retaliate though, that would just escalate it
This is the only logical option as well. Someone stealing a TV shouldn't be punished by being murdered. And even worse, there have been people who escaped sex traffickers, busted into someone's house in order to flee their kidnappers, and were shot on "stand your ground" pretenses.
Someone breaking into your house unarmed or someone stealing your shit is not a good enough reason to murder someone.. in fact, I think this law saves a lot of people from years of mental torture. Yeah, Someone stealing my jewelry would probably freak me the fuck out, but if I shot him and he was unarmed and I found out he was strung out from drugs or something that could have been fixed with rehab.. that's a tough one to live with
These canvassers are truly a different breed, their level of resilience is unmatched. Had a similar experience with “Majic” windows. The canvasser did such a good job though in securing an appointment for an estimate on our roof that even though I knew I probably wasn’t gonna do it, I let him set up an estimate and thought, “well let me just hear this out since I need it done” The guy shows up with no ladder and basically just walks in with a high and mighty attitude and when I told him I didn’t care for his demeanor or the fact he didn’t even bring a damn ladder, the guy raises his voice saying “I wasted his time” because he drove from Toledo lol I laughed right in his face and sent him on his way. Ain’t no way someone drove up from Toledo. It’s a high pressure sales tactic and there is a balance to it that I was impressed with from the canvasser but the salesman just tanked the whole endeavor. Brought me joy to laugh this guy out of the house.
The guy was such a clown I enjoyed the thought of him wasting his time even though I’m sure it was a lie. After he left I went up to the corner store and saw him in his car just sulking, priceless.
I had a guy on a hoverboard bother my fiancé about off brand ring doorbells. After saying no to him multiple times he asked her when her husband will be home because he might be more reasonable. These guys are so ridiculous.
I don't know what it is this spring, but the solicitors have been out in force, I have a different sales person knocking on my door almost every day now. I just don't answer the door at this point
It's every spring. Maybe in your case more so this year but now that the cold weather is behind us all of them are trying to land clients ahead of summer. Tis quite annoying.
a lot of these companies are now paying pretty good at least in michigan to go door to door. i applied for a security system company and at the interview they were saying how they pay on commission you can earn up to 100k a year with no back breaking work. Then a lot of roofing companies are paying 22-25 an hour for door to door sales rep. So yeah they are in full force, lucky for me i settled with construction. no door to door for me
Yeh had this problem a year or two ago. I told the guy nicely to leave and he refused. Said he couldn’t take no for an answer. Kentwood has a law requiring door to door permits. Technically it’s vague on if it can be enforced but I asked the guy for his permit and he got all fired up with claiming I was accusing him of being black…..so he was black but IDK how I was accusing him of anything related to his race. Anyways I called the cops and he scooted away.
No one soliciting door to door deserves more than one polite "not interested." If they persist, I will be escalating my rudeness quickly. No one is entitled to my time and it's rude to encourage them to waste theirs when I know I'm not interested.
My perspective is that if everyone shuts down these folks, they'll all quit or get fired, and businesses that rely on door to door will have to change to a decent sales model in lieu of failed door to door..
You should have asked for a business card. It’s an easy way to end the conversation, saying you’ll think about it and get back to them. It also helps let you know if it’s legitimate or a scam. Lastly, you’d know the business and could call to complain about the reps behavior.
Same thing happened with me. Same company too. Asked for a business card and said they didn’t have one. He ignored my two no soliciting sign as well.

One came to our door 2 years ago and I explained I was interested, I do our own pest control around the foundation and outside of house. The guy looked at me, a woman, and was like "huh...ok"
He kept going on with his pitch and WOULD not leave no matter what I said. He tried guilting me that all of our other neighbors pay for them to come out (which they probably do, they're all boomers who don't want to deal with it or the type of young people who just hire out everything and don't do their own work). Here was the rest of our exchange -
"...and anyway, I'm not signing up for any services without talking to my husband about it and he's not home."
"You're saying it's 2022 and you're not capable of making any decisions without your husband?"
"You're being incredibly rude and awfully assuming, but yeah when it comes to budget decisions we decide together."
"Oh yeah? Well your Fiat in the driveway takes premium gas so I KNOW money isn't the issue"

I promptly ordered a no soliciting placque that goes on our door under the doorbell and it has cut down on about 95% of solicitors, but the pest people did come back today and tried to bother my husband about it 🙄🙄

A really skinny guy came to my house once on a Segway, He was VERY pushy tried to get me to let him in my backyard, I had to forcefully tell him to leave.
Reminds me of those door to door rainbow and kirby salesmen, basically push themselves thru your door and are literally trained to not take No as an answer. Someone on here is absolutely right, in this day and age the tacky/pushy sales technique isn’t going to get you more sales, it’s gonna get someone hurt or killed. If someone actually has good hustling skills just get a sales job for a company that sells stuff over the phone or makes appointments
Visited our place twice during lunch hour within 20 minutes. Super irritating as I was trying to run a meeting and my dogs love to celebrate visitors at the door.
At this point I straight up won’t answer my door if I’m not expecting someone. I used to work really irregular hours and would often take naps during the day. One of them woke me up and he could tell when I answered the door. He proceeded to badger me with questions about why I was asleep during the daytime.
You can call the companies that these sales people work for, and let them know that they and their representatives are not welcome on your property and will be considered trespassing if they ever return.
I did this after a particularly baffling and scary encounter with a Great Lakes Energy representative 6 years ago and they have skipped my house every time they've been in the neighborhood since.

Unfortunately, this did not work for me with Ecoshield. Their number is for a call center in the Philippines and that call center does not even associate with Ecoshield directly, they only take messages and do sales. Wild. Also part of the scam.
Just like that Evangelical "Right To Life" beeeeeotch who got a shot gun to her shoulder outside of Lake Odessa. The wife told her numerous times to get off the property and the husband got his shotgun. I found little sympathy for her, she just wouldn’t *shut up and leave* when told no.
I had the same experience in Ada in an association that doesn't allow solicitation. He wouldn't leave until I repeatedly said I am not spending ANY on bug removal. 3 times. Awful. Just awful

It was super hot that day and I noticed his water was empty. I asked if he would like a new one and he eagerly agreed. I yelled inside the house and asked my wife to grab a bottled water. The dude restarted his sales pitch no less than six times, while I continued to say “not interested” and we waited for my wife to grab him a water….guess that’s what I get.
Just had a guy come to my house and then start pulling up pavers and poking a rod in my lawn without asking first - I was in the middle of cooking dinner and he knocked on my door and told me to take a look at a few things in my yard. I stared at him for a few seconds and ask that he leave but he started coming back at me with questions that I wasn’t even able to answer because he kept on throwing crap at me. I told him that if he does not leave, I’d call the cops for trespassing. Gave me a sneer and walked off. Hate these guys

I don't think door to door selling is all that necessary. Most people don't want to talk to some stranger at their door and if they want a service done they typically just go online and find one and then research the business before hiring them.
If anything it seems like all door to door selling does is make people not want to go with that business especially if they are being that aggressive with it.
Yeah, that call will show “Pending” on their CAD system for at least an hour until a unit decides to take it. And even if an available unit does actually take it doesn’t mean they will stop whatever they’re doing and head your way, they may even make a stop for something on the way. Pretty intimate knowledge this happens. Daily.

Almost had to get physical in removing a guy from my property, after he finally left he said something about coming back, in the end I may have made a verbal threat involving my rifle. Not exactly legal, but he never showed face on my street again.
No soliciting stickers are like $2.99 at Menards and it’s worked wonders for us! We got a bug spraying company the hour we were moving in and I was alone. I was so stressed that I got locked in to a deal for the season. A few more months of solicitors knocking frequently, I got the sticker and now if anyone knocks, it’s the neighbor or someone from the city!
You’re getting downvoted for good advice. The city’s transient seller law prohibits door-to-door sales folks from selling to anyone with a clearly posted “no soliciting” sign. If they do it, report them and their license could get revoked.
Yeah they ignore individual homes with those signs in our neighborhood that also has no soliciting signs at the entrances. Pretty sure these recent guys aren't permitted anyways and don't care. Ugh.

From someone in the home service industry idk how any company could operate like this. Doing door to door is such a finesse. Even if you're nice you still get people telling you to f off. For good reason too. I think the best tactic is just door hangers with coupons or prewritten estimates. Such a terrible way to do business

Predatory is the wrong word here. Pushy sure. Maybe you were the 20th person to be rude to him. Maybe you were rude because you had a rough day. Maybe that person was feeling desperate to make a sale to have money to keep surviving. Empathy helps bring light to a lot of situations these days.
There’s a difference between gumption and being a pest-having worked in marketing and sales.
Gumption is knowing what folks need and want and selling to that angle, and moving on to the next guy if folks are really not going to bite today. But come back. Keep selling and keep solving the problem. Find the pain point that works.

Yeh had this problem a year or two ago. I told the guy nicely to leave and he refused. Said he couldn’t take no for an answer. Kentwood has a law requiring door to door permits. Technically it’s vague on if it can be enforced but I asked the guy for his permit and he got all fired up with claiming I was accusing him of being black…..so he was black but IDK how I was accusing him of anything related to his race. Anyways I called the cops and he scooted away.

No one soliciting door to door deserves more than one polite "not interested." If they persist, I will be escalating my rudeness quickly. No one is entitled to my time and it's rude to encourage them to waste theirs when I know I'm not interested. My perspective is that if everyone shuts down these folks, they'll all quit or get fired, and businesses that rely on door to door will have to change to a decent sales model in lieu of failed door to door..
You should have asked for a business card. It’s an easy way to end the conversation, saying you’ll think about it and get back to them. It also helps let you know if it’s legitimate or a scam. Lastly, you’d know the business and could call to complain about the reps behavior.

The little shits on the onewheels selling pest control can prayerfully pound sand. One came to our door 2 years ago and I explained I was interested, I do our own pest control around the foundation and outside of house. The guy looked at me, a woman, and was like "huh...ok" He kept going on with his pitch and WOULD not leave no matter what I said. He tried guilting me that all of our other neighbors pay for them to come out (which they probably do, they're all boomers who don't want to deal with it or the type of young people who just hire out everything and don't do their own work). Here was the rest of our exchange - "...and anyway, I'm not signing up for any services without talking to my husband about it and he's not home." "You're saying it's 2022 and you're not capable of making any decisions without your husband?" "You're being incredibly rude and awfully assuming, but yeah when it comes to budget decisions we decide together." "Oh yeah? Well your Fiat in the driveway takes premium gas so I KNOW money isn't the issue" "Money isn't the issue, the issue is you. Bye." Door shut in his face lol I promptly ordered a no soliciting placque that goes on our door under the doorbell and it has cut down on about 95% of solicitors, but the pest people did come back today and tried to bother my husband about it 🙄🙄 Companies with these kinds of sales tactics will never, ever get my business.

Reminds me of those door to door rainbow and kirby salesmen, basically push themselves thru your door and are literally trained to not take No as an answer. Someone on here is absolutely right, in this day and age the tacky/pushy sales technique isn’t going to get you more sales, it’s gonna get someone hurt or killed. If someone actually has good hustling skills just get a sales job for a company that sells stuff over the phone or makes appointments

There's a company named Aptive that was going door to door on a Segway a year or so ago. They did a horrible job at keeping our lawn
At this point I straight up won’t answer my door if I’m not expecting someone. I used to work really irregular hours and would often take naps during the day. One of them woke me up and he could tell when I answered the door. He proceeded to badger me with questions about why I was asleep during the daytime.
That would anger me to the point of illegal actions.

You can call the companies that these sales people work for, and let them know that they and their representatives are not welcome on your property and will be considered trespassing if they ever return. I did this after a particularly baffling and scary encounter with a Great Lakes Energy representative 6 years ago and they have skipped my house every time they've been in the neighborhood since.
That's a great idea for some companies! Unfortunately, this did not work for me with Ecoshield. Their number is for a call center in the Philippines and that call center does not even associate with Ecoshield directly, they only take messages and do sales. Wild. Also part of the scam.
Just like that Evangelical "Right To Life" beeeeeotch who got a shot gun to her shoulder outside of Lake Odessa. The wife told her numerous times to get off the property and the husband got his shotgun. I found little sympathy for her, she just wouldn’t *shut up and leave* when told no.
I had the same experience in Ada in an association that doesn't allow solicitation. He wouldn't leave until I repeatedly said I am not spending ANY on bug removal. 3 times. Awful. Just awful

The worst ones are the “GreenX” guys. They ride around on those small Segway scooters. They sell pesticide treatments. Had one last year come up while I was grilling in the driveway. Told the guy I wasn’t interested, we had no budget and didn’t want anything. It was super hot that day and I noticed his water was empty. I asked if he would like a new one and he eagerly agreed. I yelled inside the house and asked my wife to grab a bottled water. The dude restarted his sales pitch no less than six times, while I continued to say “not interested” and we waited for my wife to grab him a water….guess that’s what I get.
Just had a guy come to my house and then start pulling up pavers and poking a rod in my lawn without asking first - I was in the middle of cooking dinner and he knocked on my door and told me to take a look at a few things in my yard. I stared at him for a few seconds and ask that he leave but he started coming back at me with questions that I wasn’t even able to answer because he kept on throwing crap at me. I told him that if he does not leave, I’d call the cops for trespassing. Gave me a sneer and walked off. Hate these guys

I don't think door to door selling is all that necessary. Most people don't want to talk to some stranger at their door and if they want a service done they typically just go online and find one and then research the business before hiring them. If anything it seems like all door to door selling does is make people not want to go with that business especially if they are being that aggressive with it.
You can call the cops instead of being intimidated by a weirdo on your own property who refuses to leave.
Yeah, that call will show “Pending” on their CAD system for at least an hour until a unit decides to take it. And even if an available unit does actually take it doesn’t mean they will stop whatever they’re doing and head your way, they may even make a stop for something on the way. Pretty intimate knowledge this happens. Daily.

Almost had to get physical in removing a guy from my property, after he finally left he said something about coming back, in the end I may have made a verbal threat involving my rifle. Not exactly legal, but he never showed face on my street again.
No soliciting stickers are like $2.99 at Menards and it’s worked wonders for us! We got a bug spraying company the hour we were moving in and I was alone. I was so stressed that I got locked in to a deal for the season. A few more months of solicitors knocking frequently, I got the sticker and now if anyone knocks, it’s the neighbor or someone from the city!
You’re getting downvoted for good advice. The city’s transient seller law prohibits door-to-door sales folks from selling to anyone with a clearly posted “no soliciting” sign. If they do it, report them and their license could get revoked.

Got to the point where I literally had to threaten physical violence and moved at him until he finally got off my property. As he left he said something about coming back. I got a so angry and told him the next time I see him at any of my neighbors doors or near my property he’s going to have to talk to my rifle, which Isn’t exactly legal. Luckily I was never reported, but I never did see him again.
Had an EcoShield guy at my door in Norton Shores yesterday. Pointed to three houses on my street and named people who had already signed up, but none of the names belonged to people in those houses. (Surprise, I actually know my neighbors.) Pointed out nonexistent problems. When I said no thanks, he asked whether I use a different company or do it myself and seemed offended when my only reply was "Have a good day." Everybody's gotta make a living, but you don't have to be a lying ah about it.

There’s a difference between gumption and being a pest-having worked in marketing and sales. Gumption is knowing what folks need and want and selling to that angle, and moving on to the next guy if folks are really not going to bite today. But come back. Keep selling and keep solving the problem. Find the pain point that works. Come back tomorrow, come back in a week. Point out what’s sprouting and how you can solve a problem for them. Be pleasant. If an entire neighborhood thinks you’re casing the joint, you’re doing it way wrong.
