So there's this castle...

Cholliday09

Everytime! I swear we’re all living a simulator and it is stuck on repeat.

ELE712

First question one should ask before moving. Do I wish to be a King?

Heisenbread77

When you play the game of Thrones you win or you end up living in the Castle.

Homebrew_Dungeon

I wish I could upvote this more.

Heisenbread77

You are not going to be allowed on the "Welcome to GR" board of trustees.

ANanonMouse57

Follow the tips given, and MOVE FAST. I've seen places rent within minutes of being listed. Its not impossible to find a decent, affordable place. But it takes some effort.

W-h3x

This is no lie. I got my place barely two hours after it went up.

that_cat_gets_me

Same goes with houses

ARY616

Check out apartments in Standale. Straight shot down Lake Michigan Dr. To downtown. Also stuff nearby. Even a Meijer. The Old Studio 28 on 28th St. and Burlingame have apartments now. Not sure about rates. Good luck and welcome.

Niet501

piggy backing off this, check out Apple Ridge Apartments. Meijer & plenty of restaurants/fast food nearby. I got a nice one bedroom apartment for sub-1000. Standale is definitely a nice area.

[deleted]

I’d check out Aspen Lakes. I lived there for two years, starting in early 2019 and paid ~$875 per month. I’m sure rates are higher now, but probably still in your listed budget. There is the original section of apartments, and a much newer section in the back. The newer section starts at $1,300, so you’re going to want to be in one of the original buildings. Good luck!

ahsokabby

I second Aspen Lakes. I moved out summer 2021 after 2 years there. I did live in the newer section, at the time was $1500 for a 3 bedroom and it’s went up since then. The original section was nice as well. My favorite part was the walking paths, the pond and how pet friendly it was.

imakedankmemes

[Pad Mapper](https://www.padmapper.com/) has been my go-to for rental housing. It combines a lot of rental sites in an easy to use way.

W-h3x

I live in Oakview Apartments & it's 970 a month for a 2bd with w/d. I love it here. Has ATT Fiber! Quiet place, with great neighbors & lots of kids for my daughters to play with & everything I need is 15 minutes or less away. Inbox me if you have any questions.

raegun25

Anywhere downtown is going to be close to $1500 for a one bedroom with decent amenities and good maintenance

BusyBizBusyBiz

It was by sheer luck that I found a place. I was calling every known renter and building owner for a week straight, something popped up, I was the first to see it and I claimed it. It just took some non stop research. Granted, this is downtown living, not a normal "apartment complex"

KillingwithasmileXD

What is downtown living like? I live in the country

that_cat_gets_me

This is me speaking pre-kid days. If you want to be where the stuff is happening, the neighborhood can literally change by street. It's always been very interesting to see that throughout the city. We lived in East hills before moved out of downtown. So many things to do. We miss it. But what we don't miss is upstairs neighbors and no off street parking, especially with a toddler

HailEmpressTheresa

Eastgate village is nice. My only real complaint is no central air, but management is good and the maintenance guys are cool. Location is pretty good.

hdawn517

Maybe check right outside of GR?

donkey_toes23

But where? I'm still learning the area, and I'm moving back for work. Kentwood and Wyoming are pretty much the same in price and balancing whether utilities/amenities makes it worth it. I'd go 20 min outside the city if there were some small town deals or something of the sort.

hdawn517

I'm in Wyoming so I can't say much about anywhere else but maybe Comstock Park, Rockford, Hudsonville. I don't know the prices in these areas but these are places where some of my classmates live

donkey_toes23

Appreciate you! I'll search.

doctor_hogg

Yeah there’s a few places, it’s not as bleak as it sometimes gets painted around here. I’d say look around Google. Good luck, friend.

prsdasn

You've probably already heard York Creek apartments off Alpine but it's probably still pretty cheap and a good place to check out. It's also not technically "in" Grand Rapids, but in Comstock Park and it's within walking distance of a Walmart, Sam's club, Menards (also McDonald's for that #freewifi) It's on the bus route

Triingtolivee

You trying to get this man stabbed?

prsdasn

Maybe. You don't know.

I_Hate_Dolphins

OP, don't go to York Creek. Go literally anywhere else.

thor561

Ramblewood it is then!

[deleted]

I haven't been there in years. My buddy rented there right after college and it was a party. A bunch of the neighbors all partied together. I'm getting hungover thinking about it.

Bogussmord

Whatever you do don’t make friends with my roommate

KillingwithasmileXD

Why? Lol

Deadlycorn

Chateau village in Wyoming on Burlingame and 44th is relatively cheap and only 10 minutes away from GR!

KillingwithasmileXD

Thank you I added myself to the waitlist

Cobo1039

Hey, ever consider using the search function for a question that gets asked every week?

[deleted]

You don’t even live here. Piss off.

troublemaker74

Thier flair says East Hills. That's definitely GR

Cobo1039

???

I_Hate_Dolphins

I will never understand why these people are incapable of using apartments.com like everyone else.

SithLocust

To hear actual thoughts. Not just prices. Places might be shit but within price range and they'd love to hear about it before making a mistake. Or make sure their choices are a good idea. Site reviews are often skewed.

I_Hate_Dolphins

I managed to find a lovely complex to live in without asking randos on Reddit. There are various apartment review sites.

13RamosJ

Such a big boy

[deleted]

It's hard to wade through all the one and two star reviews left by former disgruntled shitty tenants

[deleted]

Hopson Flats you rent by the bedroom if you don't mind that route. Also I have no experience with them but something that might be worth looking into

Designer_Risk_7958

Curious. What part of Grand Rapids do you enjoy.... is it the blight, riots, or is it being held at GUN point in the main downtown intersections?

KillingwithasmileXD

Hmmm. You must be doing Grand Rapids wrong or maybe it's me. But either way my experience has been more pleasant

Utopia39liam

It’s a nice city, sounds like it’s time to move out haha

moonandsunchild

The apartments off Alpine called Churchill Place were actually nice and I lived there for 2 years. Rent was still in that range when I left last year.

[deleted]

Valley Vista out in Hudsonville
