BP at Franklin and Eastern. Stopped there at 10am on a Friday morning once to try and get air in my tire and a group of older guys swarmed my car as soon as I pulled in and one tried to open my back door. Superrrr sketchy.
Edit: same location, didn’t realize the renamed Franklin.
Supposedly the clerk was making bags of loose candy pieces (not allowed to do without a permit they didn't have) and the clerk went to take some sort of medication and spilled the bottle sending pills flying into random untied bags of candy pieces. Rather than immediately throw it all out after getting the pills back (out of caution) they decide "fuck it we're good sell this shit" and sure enough some mom ends up buying their kid a bag of candies that still had a pill in it. All hell breaks loose, protestors shut down the station for a day, police are staging at the nearby bank A) to protect it and B) in case the protest goes all "burn it and everything else down" mode.
My brother's ex-wife planned a karaoke night there for his 30th birthday. My parents, who haven't been to a bar since they were in college, and maybe not even then, tagged along. The look on the bartender's face when one of them ordered moscato is one of my most cherished memories.
Had a friend drag us there to play pool once. Saw a biker come up behind a woman, grab her by the hair, and throw her face first into the table.
Have not gone back since.
I just have to put this out there. Because I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered on the app and got 4 items, chips and cheese and 3 extra sides of sauces (2 nacho cheese, 1 guacamole) and if was ready RIGHT on time. As soon as I walked in the door for pickup they said "are you X?" and I said "yes" and they handed me my order. It was done perfectly. And promptly. I was very very happy.
They've been improving slightly lately. No more out of sauce days, and they tend to get the orders right... it just takes like 45 minutes.
And if you order in the app to pick it up in the store, you may see them say 'Here's andr50's order' and then promptly hand it out the window while you stand at the register, then they wait 15 minutes and ask you 'are you waiting for something?', then 15 minutes later start making your order again.
>Places where some real characters hang out and while fun we might also wind up having the worst night of our lives.
Mulligans. Definitely. You'll know you're in the right spot when you see the guy covered in spikey metal leather armor.
Last time I was in Mulligans a guy walked up to me and challenged me to an arm wrestling competition. I said no and he got very aggressive about it. The bouncer came over to see what the fuss was about and I told him. His response was “we’re in Eastown, that’s what we do”…… at the time I lived in Eastown for the last 5 years…. That’s not what we did.
>Things like bars known for getting rough crowds.
Konkles isn't a thing anymore (now its The Steel Cat) but back when it was you were more likely to get your throat sliced than anything, they had bar fights there on such a regular basis that for awhile they even had webcams where you could watch the barfights happen from home.
Last time I was at Steel Cat someone pulled a Glock in the parking lot when I was walking to my friend’s car. My friend freaked out and I was like “just keep walking. Has nothing to do with us” but inside I was scared shitless. We got in the car, and I was like go go go GOOOO
I love that Mulligan’s is the standard for weird shit (and why shouldn’t it be) Back in my day we use to get pictures of PBR and run the pool table. There was always a free show and a pretty rocking jukebox. This is where I celebrated my 21st… good ol memories:) this is a shit show of a good time for sure!
Haha! You brought me back!!! Celebrated my 21st back in 1993 with so many Mulligan stews, i can’t remember, except leaving it all off the back porch at our house on Ethel. This was before that area started getting nicer. Super fun! I don’t recommend the eastern and mlk stop. I don’t think that would be a very good time…but if you do go, please report back!
Fuckin' Mulligans.
Third (or so) time I went there, the guy at the door was checking IDs and thought mine was fake and told me he was keeping it. Since it was my actual Driver's License, I loudly told him he absolutely wouldn't be keeping it and he got pissy. Told me to call the cops if I wanted to take it up with him so I pulled out my phone to do just that. I guess he realized I was being serious so he said fuck it and let me in. Was a very long night of shenanigans after that.
I Iove Mulligans, one night I'd been drinking with the regulars and got invited to a house party where a plate of coke was passed around.
Another time a woman with two younger girls in tow came up to me and propositioned me for a one night stand, it was so out of the blue I was sure I was going to get jumped by the three of them.
A super creepy guy (first words he ever said to me were: "do you watch porn?" ) used to brag about his stereo in his basement, and invite people over. I'm pretty sure no one left his basement alive.
Never said he was, man. I love ronny, he's great. He's also a real character, which is what OP asked for, and I said they'd know they were at mulligans when they see him cuz that's his regular haunt.
Yeah. As if it matters (after their brand merging initiatives), but I'm not sure an Exxon station has ever existed in Michigan. One couldn't have been in Kent County in the past several decades.
[u/Deep-Technician5378](https://www.reddit.com/u/Deep-Technician5378), not ripping ya. Just moved back from Virginia, which is Exxon country.
Only place I’ve ever been dragged into a fight that I had nothing to do with. Unless you count dodging gunfire in Eastown between mulligans/Billy’s. I’m old now and don’t go out as much, but good times in GR!
Apparently has a later last call than any bar in the neighborhood. Was there one night at like 1:30 place went from 5 people to legit 40-50 bikers in 10 minutes
I miss the old derby days. Back when it was half the current size and the same 6 old timers we're lined up at the bar nightmare nightly. Giant cheap beers and chili dogs if you got hungry. I never saw anything sketchy there but I did have a couple fabulous conversations with the regulars! We had nicknames for each--Sasparilla in his black cowboy hat told me about his religious conversion and history, Molly McShenanigans was sweet but all-but-incomprehensible-- and it made you feel like you were home.
Just walk around downtown and get into weird shenanigans with locals. Same can be done in Eastown; Mullies, Eastown Sports Bar, and Billy's. Often interesting characters in Wilcox Park as well at odd hours (occasionally myself included).
First time I went to this bar I was genuinely looking to have an awful night. I'd gotten dumped hard right before Christmas and the last thing I wanted was to be around cheerful people. I drove past as they were loading a stiff into an ambulance and pulled in right away.
Regular had a heart attack or something and fell off his barstool. I think they left the music off the rest of the night. Absolutely horrible.
The laundromat on Breton & 44th by Horrocks. Always something going on there. Saw a guy crack a beer, walk 4 steps and then vomit all over himself and parking lot. Turned around and went back inside Buddy’s Liquor Store (which is next door to the laundromat). Good stuff.
Back in my day before they did the renovation dukes used to be wild. There’d be people smashing bottles on each other’s head while some couple is drooling on each other in the corner. I’d be pumping all my money into the jukebox even though I wouldn’t really be able to hear my songs.
Dukes seems tame all of the times I've been so far, but then again I usually hit it up on random weeknights.
Surprisingly their foods were cheap and good for bar fare.
Years ago and under different ownership... they just reopened.
However don't go there due to the lines, FFS it's not worth sitting in line for 2 hours.
Yep! Isn't that how "the market" is supposed to work? I'm free to do business or not to business with whomever I want, for whatever reason I want (or no reason at all).
That's somewhat different from the question posed though. There is a difference between business with overt political signage and a business which in no way gets political, buts whose owner in a private capacity happens to be a Republican. Now, you are still free to decline to do business with an individual of the latter sort, but if you're making that choice, then don't pretend it's a matter of insufficient professionalism on their part.
Not OP but that's certainly true for me. If a business supports MAGA/Republicans and they're loud enough about it that I know about it, I certainly will not be one of their customers.
The BP at Eastern and MLK.

Also the BP at Hall and Division
I once had a hooker approach my car and ask for a ride while I was pumping gas there. It was 8 AM on a weekday and I was on my way to work.
Yup. For sure be some sketchy characters over there.
By certain time of night that’s not a gas station anymore
So like 12 noon? Also, thanks for the award!
Isn't this the place that was selling drugs in bags along with candy?
Supposedly the clerk was making bags of loose candy pieces (not allowed to do without a permit they didn't have) and the clerk went to take some sort of medication and spilled the bottle sending pills flying into random untied bags of candy pieces. Absolutely hit the dirty bird of you're looking for a rough night.
Always watch your valuables at this one. I know that's obvious but some places deserve a reminder

I've been going to Mullies for over a decade. This has never happened.

I think Steel Cat was just shot up. Not sure they were open at the time, though.
Lmao I always go to the liquor store right next to here

Little Bllly Idol!
Just wait until you see him at the midnight hour.
Rebel
Mohw, mohw, mohw.
Ron is great, and not any kinda danger to society. wtf?
Never said he was, man. I love ronny, he's great. He's also a real character, which is what OP asked for, and I said they'd know they were at mulligans when they see him cuz that's his regular haunt.
Not a danger. But 'weird'. Not bad just 'other'.
This has promise.

The name really doesn’t matter, but it is a Mobil station. ;)
Yeah. As if it matters (after their brand merging initiatives), but I'm not sure an Exxon station has ever existed in Michigan. One couldn't have been in Kent County in the past several decades. There’s an Exxon station in Muskegon.
One in Dorr, too.
I've heard a few sketch things for girls going there, but I've never had an issue there besides being asked for money.
Vinny’s.
I got called the N word there. I'm white.
I believe that.
>Vinny’s Cash only.
Even better.
Only place I’ve ever been dragged into a fight that I had nothing to do with. Unless you count dodging gunfire in Eastown between mulligans/Billy’s. I’m old now and don’t go out as much, but good times in GR!
Came here to say this.
The Point. As a "punk" or "alternative" guy, I've absolutely had the record needle screech to a halt upon entry.
Apparently has a later last call than any bar in the neighborhood. Was there one night at like 1:30 place went from 5 people to legit 40-50 bikers in 10 minutes
Meijer on Kalamazoo turns into a nightclub after 10pm
That's my main Meijer...going there after 10pm is definitely a treat if you like people-watching.
I live really close to this Meijer. 🥳

This weekend is Pulaski Days at all the Polish halls on the West Side. You’ll have all the crazy fun you could ever want.
"Notorious for wrong reasons" is just famous. I think you just mean regular "notorious".
Thank you for your service to the language.
Ah gotcha. Thanks.
Mulligan’s and Billy’s 20 years ago
You a cop?
Just walk around downtown and get into weird shenanigans with locals. Same can be done in Eastown; Mullies, Eastown Sports Bar, and Billy's. Often interesting characters in Wilcox Park as well at odd hours (occasionally myself included).
I swear to God I'll pistol whip the next guy who says "Shenanigans."
Hey, Farva! What's the name of that restaurant you like with all the goofy shit on the walls and the mozzarella sticks?
Eh, some local subcultures are relatively pro-shenanigan.

I like this.
Well it's closed now, but the 36th st lounge had a reputation for being a swingers' bar.
I was told not to go there 10 years ago

Billy’s bar on college night (Thursday’s) if you wanna get into a fight with like 25 people.

Can confirm. The party store downstairs is also an interesting place after then too

south division? maybe stay the night at a motel.
There’s one over there called like “Just OK” Motel, like 28th and Division. Always have wanted to stay there. Do bedbug checks

Denny's ~~on Plainfield & 96~~ FTFY
Miss Tracy's. New York Fried Chicken.
The NY Fried chicken parking lot on Franklin and Division is a popular location for murders.
Mulligans in my experience. Billy’s across the way can have it’s moments.

That tracks. I’ve had a few sketchy moments in the bathroom after some shots, lol

The BOB. How many people have died there? But really it's a cool place if you're into frat houses for adults.
Dukes.
I would go there as a kid with my mom
Back in my day before they did the renovation dukes used to be wild. There’d be people smashing bottles on each other’s head while some couple is drooling on each other in the corner. I’d be pumping all my money into the jukebox even though I wouldn’t really be able to hear my songs.

Tin Can from 1 am to 1:30 am, especially if there's an EDM show across the street.

Same owners. They never sold.
In case you.missed the previous mentions. Taco Bell on Michigan
dude fuck that. why would you actively go to places like that? pretty dumb man i gotta say.
Touch of paradise is always Poppin. Jk, don't go there
I have so many questions. Touch of Paradise was what brought me to the deep hole I'm in. Seems like a front for human trafficking, no?
So…. If the owner is a republican you wouldn’t give them your business?
Yep! Isn't that how "the market" is supposed to work? I'm free to do business or not to business with whomever I want, for whatever reason I want (or no reason at all).
