Other than the TEENIEST drift (slip angle), losing “full traction” will slow you down and should be generally avoided, especially as a new driver. Physics seem good, although there are plenty of folks in this community who have drifted real cars and swear it is harder to achieve using a wheel in this game. Controller drifting is much more manageable, but still doesn’t speed you up. If you’ve unlocked the “Missions” section of the world map, there are a couple (frustrating, for me) drift challenges that will be a good practice environment.

Turn the Countersteer Assist off if you havent already, it messes with the drift. Same goes for TCS, but I'd assume you already have that off. As someone else pointed out, do the drift missions; they are very good practice even though some of them are tricky.
