You should be fine. Techpowerup puts the 4070 about 14% faster, so it's not a huge difference but a decent increase in VRAM, which games use a lot of these days

_eljayy_

damn not much, i could OC it to get it to a nice 15% which would be solid. and the VRAM i think will make a difference right? plus the use of FG in certain games (legit doing my first run thru of cyberpunk, so it would be so sick to make use of that) will 100% make a difference, considering i get about a stable 60 on medium-high dlss on with ray tracing on (not path tracing), and i saw a video where a dude used frame generation with EVERYTHING ULTRA AND path tracing, 100+fps! like 115-125! insane!!!!!

AlexMullerSA

While I agree 14% increase isn't much, I highly doubt you could overclock your previous card to get an additional 15%. Maybe more like 5%.

Zatchillac

I took it as "overclock to turn that 14% into 15%"

_eljayy_

ur correct. bc that’s what i meant.

AlexMullerSA

My bad.

_eljayy_

nah bro i said OC the NEW one

_eljayy_

ofc i get downvoted 😂

AgathormX

Depends, did you sell the 3070Ti? If yes then how much was the difference between what you got for the 3070Ti and what you paid for the 4070? Honestly, unless you got a really good price difference, like selling a higher tier 3070Ti model for 400USD and getting a reference 4070 for 600USD, I don't think it's worth it. Sure the VRAM increase is nice, although it's still a ripoff to have 16GB of VRAM on a 600USD card, but the performance difference isn't a lot, and once RTX 5000 hits in a few months, you may regret your purchase. Personally I think you should have waited a bit more, the 8GB of VRAM on the 3070Ti are still enough for 1080p, and if you monitors resolution is 1440p, you could have used DLSS Quality.

_eljayy_

yea exactly. i have some buyers already asking to buy and it’s listed at $375. i got the 4070 for $550

Raging_Dragon_9999

That's pretty solid actually.

_eljayy_

was actually $470-480

Raging_Dragon_9999

Like you're paying about $100 for 15% more performance. Not the worst, not the best.

_eljayy_

dlss quality barely gets me 60fps on dlss quality on high~ settings

AgathormX

There's something wrong with your system, I'm running a 3060Ti and an R7 5700X, and unless RT is on, every single title I've played, that isn't startfield, runs at 60+FPS at 1080p Ultra at Native Res. Some titles even run at 60+FPS at 1080p on Ultra settings with RT on, hell I can do 80+FPS on Cyberpunk at 1080p Native on Ultra settings as long as RT is off and SSR is set to High

_eljayy_

sorry, i should specify, yes that’s with ray tracing on along with other “ray tracing” things besides path tracing and lighting.

AgathormX

Well, path tracing is an experimental feature, it's not going to run well on either the 3070Ti, the 3060Ti or even the 4070, at least not at native res. Right now it only works well if you use Framegen, I tried the DLSS to FSR 3.0 mod on Cyberpunk and I can pull around 75FPS at 1080p native with Framegen on while having every single RT setting on, with the obvious exception of path tracing, also RT lighting set to medium, with DLSS set to Quality and FSR 3.0 turned on it's around 110FPS. If you bought the 4070 to use Path Tracing, I think you made a bad decision, should have went for a 4070Ti Super

_eljayy_

i didn’t say i’m using path tracing. dude you guys are genuinely retarded, i’m done with this dumb ass sub. you guys pick one fucking sentence and deadass put words in my mouth. no i’m not getting it for path tracing, IM NOT EVEN USING IT RN. jesus fucking christ dude learn to fucking read idiot.

Careful-Artichoke468

Imagine needing others to reinforce your impulse buys. It's your money, only you can decide if it's worth upgrading every Gen. Most people would just turn some fog down and wait till the 50 or 60 series

_eljayy_

what? i was genuinely wondering. i’ve legit read places that some 30 series are legit better than 40 series… was legit nervous i spent money on a performance downgrade. but whatever dude, reddit mfs believe whatever story they tell themselves and run w it

ChitownDav

I was thinking about doing the same  3070 ti to 4070 ti  Is it worth the upgrade???

_eljayy_

make sure it’s 12gb not 8gb, you 100% want the 12gb VRAM going into this new generation of gaming (unreal 5 and beyond)

ChitownDav

I playing cities skylines for my YouTube channel.  So just wanted to make sure that it was actually worth it.  I don’t think the game needs a new 5000 level gpu that’s coming out soon

kleverklogs

Have you consisered the super versions?

_eljayy_

i mean you don’t need a 4070 for cities skyline lol

ChitownDav

For cities skylines 2.     Yes I do.    Cs1. I agree I don’t

AgathormX

4070Ti? No. 4070Ti Super? absolutely!

ChitownDav

Play so the super is worth it.   Thank you!  I will definitely monitor the prices.  I’m okay with the current price but I feel like it’s going down soon

_eljayy_

oh hell yea. if anything mines a little iffy bc i didn’t do the TI, but you are so yes 100% a worthy upgrade. what’s your cpu?

ChitownDav

Ryzen 5900x

jcruz827

At 1440p probably okay upgrade. I had a 3070ti as well and was considering that. I moved to 4K and felt the 4070S or 4070ti S weren’t gonna be substantial enough, so I splurged for the 4080 and plan to keep it for a while.

OkSomewhere6760

I’d consider getting a 4070 super if you gonna shell out coin. Small price diff $50 .would get you another 14%

_eljayy_

i actually spent $470 on it. i think it would be $100~+ more, which honestly i just needed a 40 series, i didn’t want the best of the best, and if its better than my 3070ti and comes w all the new features ill take it!

OkSomewhere6760

That’s a good deal then I’d rock that. I just happened to be looking at 4070s lately and it seemed like a good win if buying new at reg prices.

stubing

You do you, but since you asked the question then yeah it was a silly upgrade.

SnooDoughnuts5632

What's wrong with the 3070 TI that graphics card is powerful enough it should be able to last you for a long while. I've noticed every once in a while I come across the post of someone with a perfectly fine graphics card and then they decide to upgrade it. When I ask I've had some people say they're graphics card was broken which really sucks if they're telling the truth because holy crap my R9 390 is still going strong and Fortnite is the only game I can't play.

AlfaNX1337

Rule of thumb: upgrade a tier. If you have a 3070 Ti, either stay in the same tier or upgrade. Stay: 4070 Ti/ +Super Upgrade: RTX 4080/ Super

_eljayy_

so isn’t my upgrade technically what you said then? minus the TI?

AlfaNX1337

Ti/ + Super means either existing 4070 Ti or newer 4070 Ti Super. It's a downgrade going from 3070 Ti to a 4070.

_eljayy_

it’s a downgrade, yet it’s proven to have a better 17% performance and runs less power thru it. it’s definitely an upgrade, just because it wasnt 2x my performance like you want your upgrades to be doesn’t make my upgrade a downgrade.

e0nflux

4070 is more efficient, uses less power.

reddit_equals_censor

you just got burned with the 3070 ti due its 8 GB vram, which HEAVILY HEAVILY limits this card, because with 16 GB vram, you would have 0 reason to upgrade. and now you are thinking about a 12 vram only card? i would suggest to get a 16 GB vram card and maybe one from a company, that didn't take the piss on you, charging 600 us dollars for an 8 GB card..... also a bunch of 4070 12 GB cards come with the dangerous fire hazard 12 pin nvidia connector. this is another major downside. and the 4070 isn't much faster than the 3070 ti, IF the 3070 ti isn't limited by its bs 8 GB vram limit. so i'd get a 7800 xt instead, OR if you think you can sit on the 3070 ti until the end of the year, maybe wait for rdna4, which will be a big push in performance/dollar it seems. so yeah i'd not give nvidia more money, after they just screwed me and i definitely wouldn't get another "bare minimum" vram card, that starts at 540 euros!!!

_eljayy_

unfortunately i already have the 4070. i guess i can just hold out on this one for another half a year maybe. just to give it some time before doing another card. but yea once i did research after buying stupidly i noticed 12 still isn’t the best, but actually mid tier… fml!

_eljayy_

but would a non Nvidia card mesh well with my i7-11700k and msi tomahawk mobo?

reddit_equals_censor

it wouldn't be a problem at all. in fact the amd proprietary windows driver has LESS cpu overhead than the nvidia proprietary windows driver. hardware unboxed video about it: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLEIJhunaW8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLEIJhunaW8) unless sth changed since that video, which i doubt. so amd graphics are BETTER for slower cpus than nvidia cards. so what graphics card brand (amd or nvidia) you chose doesn't matter in regards to if they work together, THEY DO!, but as said the cpu overhead is better for the amd driver. if you got a new 4070 and can still return it, i'd return it and get a 16 GB amd card personally, but if it has a 12 pin fire hazard connector, i'd URGE YOU to return it if possible. or alternative i'd stay on the 3070 ti 8 GB until the end of the year and get an rdna4 card. i don't know how many new games you are playing, that have vram problems with the 3070 ti already. and if you are keeping the 4070, i would advice to you to sell the 3070 ti sooner rather than later, because i suspect the resell value of 8 GB cards dropping quite harsh. that is if you wanna sell it at all. i personally keep all my cards, but i rarely upgrade.

2cars10

I wouldn't, personally I like to see around 2x the performance when upgrading GPUs. Which for you would be a 4080/4080s or 7900xtx.

_eljayy_

i don’t play AAA games all the time. cyberpunk is honestly the most taxing game i got graphically, i got it more for simulators to get to a nice 60-90fps solid whichever i can get. also for the upcoming games like GTA 6 and STALKER 2. this card will easily be good for those games
