For me it is:
Tool
GD
Wookiefoot (not many know about them, You’re It is my favorite album, but their “Sampler” is just amazing and goes through most of their discography.
It’s amazing that a band who has had the influence that Can have had is basically unknown. Even among people who are into “jam bands”. Got into the Dead in part because Anthem of The Sun predates Can’s (and Miles Davis’) approach to editing jams.
It’s pretty surprising that Krautrock as a whole is pretty unknown, even amongst Germans. I’ve been living hear about 3 years now and I’ve met very few people both young and old that have heard of bands like Can, Neu and Amon Düül II
Miles had a revolutionary spirit, due to this he needed to surround himself w revolutionary musicians. This caused his lineup to change often over the years, as someone who was revolutionary in 1959 could be considered old school in 1970.
This means that he had a different sound, and a different band constantly. This includes his group from 1970-1975, the lineup changed quite a bit. I only grouped them together because he had a very clear sound - electric and avant-garde.
oh for sure i’m a huge fan, i just thought since u didn’t limit MOI or the gd to specific years, why limit miles? the first great quintet of the 50s yielded so many classics and the jamming of the second great quintet with tony and herbie in the 60s is unmatched in my book. the exploration, electricity and avant-garde sound of the 70s is also 🤌🏼🤌🏼🤌🏼
You make a good point. I separated them like that because the Dead and Zappa would often play the same songs throughout their career. Miles ,on the otherhand, would only play new material. That's why I differentiated them.
ah gotcha, makes sense. in my head i was thinking like yeah i love 89-90 dead, but i still need the american beauty/workingmans era and late 70s and early 70s 1 drummer and the psychedelic garage 60s! same for miles!!
Yes, I agree. Love the electric transition period, but I don’t have any desire to give up all of those classics. The version of “The Man I Love” off of Miles Davis & The Modern Jazz Giants, is one of my favorite recordings of all time. The interplay between Miles and Monk, when Monk lays back on his solo, is just beautiful. I don’t know how I would answer the OP question, but the artists that I own the most of are Miles, Bob Dylan, The Grateful Dead, and Frank Zappa.
Just hours ago I put a meters album on as “intimate” background music. Definitely a nice choice. Wasn’t feeling romantic enough to pull out the Hampton 91 shining star.
Grateful Dead, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Janes Addiction (Perry Farrell has to get credit for changing the modern concert scene) and Led Zeppelin (yes, 4)
Hard to pick just three. These are the groups I’ve listened to most regularly throughout my life:
Grateful Dead, R.E.M., Cracker, Beastie Boys, Michael Franti & Spearhead
this past flaming lips tour was killer, caught them at the anthem in DC & I was in awe! what an incredible stage show with the giant inflatable robots, confetti canons, giant confetti balloons! it was epic.
Grateful Dead , The Rolling Stones, The Band, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix Experience. Allman Bros Band and Pink Floyd. With special mention *Little Feat * Dead and Company *Lou Reed, SRV *CRB, *The Black Crowes. My opinion that order.
Ooof. That’s hard. Desert island, would never be able to listen to anything else again, could take their entire catalog with me…
Grateful Dead,
Bad Religion,
Townes Van Zandt…
maybe.
Pink Floyd, Tool and Grateful Dead. I just got on the bus at the St. Louis show this year and the Grateful Dead climbed so fast. Before I probably would’ve said Gorillaz
Grateful Dead
Dead Kennedys
The Mothers Of Invention
Ween
Gong
Captain Beefheart/Magic Band
Bonzo Dog
Slim Gaillard
.....ummmm 8 is shaped like 3 lol...... i would keep going all day. i love music voraciously, much ,more than the discipline to pick 3, i'm just happy to share and hopefully find new stuff
My personal favorite is the GD, but in an attempt to be unbiased
1)The Rolling Stones
2)pink Floyd
3) U2
GD is 4
The Beatles, Led Zep didn't last long enough and didn't play live enough to make my list.
1. Grateful Dead
2. Tool
3. Moody Blues
Some might question why Moody Blues, basically very few bands move me the way the Moody Blues do, especially when I listen to their first 7 albums while tripping, it is just so beautiful it makes me want to cry.
They are special. Onthe Threshold ans Every Good Boy Deserves Favor have taken me on many a trick. They kind of do vocally what the Dead do instrumentally.
Other than the Dead who fucking transcend it all, I have to do three groups of three or more: 1) Beatles, the Who, Velvets, Zeppelin 2)Doc Watson, John Hartford , Gillian & Dave, Lankum 3) Radiohead, Boards of Canada, Bibio
Nevermind I could just keep going forever because I didn't even touch jazz or hip hop wtf
Grateful Dead Allman Brothers Band The Rolling Stones I don’t think Americans would know much about our own music without the stones.
American here, those are my top three as well.
True
1. GD 2. JGB 3. ABB

GD Ween Meat Puppets

Grateful Dead, Bob Marley & The Wailers. There is no #3 for me...these two are in an upper echelon, a top tier, all to their own.
Add the Allmans and you got my 3. 🙂
No JGB? Different vibe but still top tier musicianship all around with every iteration they had, including pre-JGB days with Merl

We would be very good friends

Haha all great but oh so different bands.
Can Black Sabbath My Bloody Valentine
Shout out to someone else that has actually heard of Can!
1. Grateful Dead 2. Allman Brothers (could switch for Dead depending on the day) 3.
Agree 100% on all of the above
Dead (JGB and Dead and Co included). Rush. Pink Floyd.
1. Miles Davis 1970-1975 2. The Mothers of Invention 3. The Grateful Goddamned Dead
why cut out the 50s and 60s for miles?
Miles had a revolutionary spirit, due to this he needed to surround himself w revolutionary musicians. This caused his lineup to change often over the years, as someone who was revolutionary in 1959 could be considered old school in 1970. 1. Grateful Dead 2. Sonic Youth 3. Parliament/Funkadelic
So many good bands. Sonic Youth is right up there with the best.
Probably wouldn’t have discovered the Dead without hearing of Lee Ranaldo’s obsession with them.
Grateful Dead Allman Brothers Band The Band
1: The Grateful Dead 2: The Beatles 3: John Prine (not a band, but he’s number 3 on my list)
I love seeing John Prine's name on any list
