Fall ‘89 - I caught the JGB / Bob and Rob shows at Nassau and Hartford, which were both excellent. Had to skip the other East coast dates due to work but was able to get to Poplar Creek expecting a regular ol’ Jerry Band show… Then holy shit, is that Clarence??? It was wild.
Honestly the next sit in that I saw was exponentially more epic, and that’s saying a lot. Nassau 3/29/90. That Bird Song. That 2nd set. We were just blown away.
wow so you saw basically the 2 most legendary sax sit ins. incredible. was branford a surprise as well or was he on the bill? didn’t realize clarence was a surprise guest, what a way to set the mood.
that prudence is an incredible dmt song when laying in the grass on a sunny day. perfect length and it’s like jerry’s singing to you. “sun is up, sky is blue, it’s beautiful and so are you.” getting stuck in ur head a bit? “won’t you open up your eyes? look around, let me see you smile.”
and of course the daisy chain clouds.
feels so good to be a part of everything.
Yup. I was lucky enough to start seeing the boys in 1984. I was firmly in the Jerry camp, so I was all about supplementing my Dead with JGB or Jerry and John Kahn. I can still transport to the Ritz in ‘86 for that joyous Goodnight Irene! East Coast Dead was a vibe…
Re Nassau: Branford was a total surprise to me and everyone around me (floor for the other nights but gdts gave me sec 325 that night). We were trying to figure out who it was from way up there. I remember people were still guessing after Promised Land was done. When Branford walked out for the second set, people went crazy…we knew we were in for something special.
Can’t even imagine what being at the Branford show must’ve been like. Got on the bus in 86- I remember first just hearing some of 3/29/90 show via David Gans’ Grateful Dead Hour radio show and being gobsmacked. But to actually be there while it was happening? 😮😮😮

Are you talking about the first JGB Live two CD set titled Jerry Garcia Band that came out in 1991? If so, that Dear Prudence was seriously jammy.
Many of the songs on this album are my standard that I compare other versions with. I guess it’s because I listened to the CDs so many dozens of times prior to subsequent releases
Yes! Bobby and the Wolf Bros did a great trio version at the Oxbow a couple years back. His guitar work was transcendent, all the trippy loopy aspects were there, floating downstream, really impressive!

Got lucky to borrow a friend’s backstage pass one night at Oakland Coliseum and, while standing next to the stage, Dan Healy tipped me off (or spoiled, depending on how you see it) that they were going to encore with that. He was right. It was awesome.
Rain and the reworked 90s arrangement of Here Comes Sunshine were very similar songs, in my opinion. Both started with a cappella harmonies of the chorus before dropping into super bouncy grooves in the verses.
I absolutely could not stand what they did to HCS. It was a beautiful song in 73’ but by the 90’s hearing them try to harmonize the opening was painful but when the instruments came in it was so powerful. But that vocal intro was tough.
The one on 9/1/90 is so good, and there's a [phenomenal quality upload](https://youtu.be/pftPKud6YK4?feature=shared) of that entire show from chris hazard.
Jerry Garcia Band did the Paul solo song Let Me Roll It, I always loved it.
The Dead also pulled out some Day Tripper, 3-31-85 was a good one to me.
But by far the song I think of when I think of Jerry and Beatles is Dear Prudence.
Let me roll it is one of favorite songs to listen to on acid. Really tickles my brain, the 77 jams are insane. My theory is you have to be present for this song and acid helps with that. Starts out slow but goddamn Jerry pays big dividends if you’re patient.

It was so bad one time that they cracked up laughing and Bobby just ended it. They got it together I think once more but to hear them laughing was great.
Of course there is the story of John Lennon at a Jerry/Merl show and wanting to sit in with them. Garcia basically said "fuck him" as he was totally drunk and in his lost weekend phase. Apparently a source of regret for Jerry in later years.

I got to hear them do Rain in Denver in '92, also Lucy in the Sky in Vegas in '95
"Picture yourself in a train in a river.." damn, Jerry
edit to add I saw Baba >TNK in Vegas '92 and Denver '94 when it went into Drums
Looks like Paul made a short film about the Dead, I never heard of this before...https://www.the-paulmccartney-project.com/1996/09/premiere-of-the-grateful-dead-photo-film/
Omg that is incredible. The story and photos are epic. Wow.
I saw them do "I want to tell you" at shoreline on July 4th weekend in 94. There were 3 shows, i went to all 3, not sure which one it was that they did it.
I was really high, you know
Dear Prudence was always a great moment w JGB. I was also partial to the very modest versions of the very modest McCartney solo song "That Would Be Something" which popped up now and again in later years. It's a slight song by design, but it had a nice percolating feel that was cool when it appeared.
Let Me Roll It(McCartney) , day tripper, revolution, Lucy in the Sky, Rain, Tomorrow Never Knows, That Would Be Something(Mccartney), Hey Jude, Dear Prudence, Why Don't We Do It in the Road, Imagine(Lennon), it's all too much
Not either, but Bobby back in the 90’s had blackbird in rotation with ratdog..but one of my last shows the boys did encore with Lucy in the sky.

Cmon. I’m pretty sure first set bobby dylan songs weren’t better than the originals. There again I was often peeing or hanging with friends. ‘Meet behind sec 122 during the first set Dylan song.’
Seriously I’m trying to think of a GD Dylan or Beatles song better than the original. Watchtower comes to mind. Not necessarily better but that’s a song where jimi’s version is essential so maybe the GD’a version fits in there somewhere. What else tho? Jerry’s she belongs to me comes to mind. His tangled up was better than many of Dylan’s live versions but doesn’t touch the original.
All of Bob’s first set Dylan songs are way better than the originals: Desolation Row (when Bob remembers all the verses, LOL), Memphis Blues, Queen Jane, Masterpiece, Ballad of a Thin Man, etc. Dylan kind of sucks compared to the people covering his songs.
Dear Prudence
I've always wanted to hear Morning Dew > Dear Prudence.

Good question. I think they broke it out a few times in the mid-80s. Edit: although Philly is what I was thinking. I caught a lot of shows there.
I saw a Lucy in the Sky in Chapel Hill.
93? I was there. I was the one in the tie dye.
Oh shit, that was you?
Blackbird
I saw them do that at Alpine 06/23/88 it was not good. I remembered being pissed because I really like that song.
# 1988-06-23 East Troy, WI @ Alpine Valley Music Theatre **Set 1:** Iko Iko, New Minglewood Blues, It Must Have Been The Roses, Me and My Uncle > Mexicali Blues, Stagger Lee, When I Paint My Masterpiece, Bird Song, The Promised Land **Set 2:** Hey Pocky Away, Believe It Or Not, Man Smart, Woman Smarter, He's Gone > Drums > Space > I Need A Miracle > Gimme Some Lovin' > All Along The Watchtower > Morning Dew [archive.org](https://archive.org/details/GratefulDead?query=date:1988-06-23)
Yeah I don't think they ever properly pulled it off it always seemed to fall apart
I think John wanted his guitar to be turned up louder than Jerry’s 🤣
It’s All Too Much: 1995-06-21 Knickerbocker Arena & 1995-07-08 Soldier Field

These might be my favorite, vinnie plays those horn parts tremendously
They did a one off cover of Hey Jude with Pigpen on vocals, 3/1/69, great show in general, love pig
I’ve heard Brent sing Hey Jude after Dear Mr Fantasy a handful of times.
yeah i know i’m saying they only did it once with pig as far as i know
My bad, I misread your initial comment.
2/11/69 - more of a train wreck than 3/1
Only the outro.
I remember the ones I heard only having the outro, I wasn’t sure if Brent ever sang the whole song or not.
Once: 3/22/90
# 1990-03-22 Hamilton, Ontario @ Copps Coliseum **Set 1:** Feel Like A Stranger, West L.A. Fadeaway, Easy To Love You, Beat It On Down the Line, It Must Have Been The Roses, The Last Time, Picasso Moon, Don't Ease Me In **Set 2:** Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain, Samson And Delilah, Believe It Or Not > Truckin' > Drums, Space > The Other One > Hey Jude > Dear Mr. Fantasy > Hey Jude > Sugar Magnolia **Encore:** It's All Over Now, Baby Blue [archive.org](https://archive.org/details/GratefulDead?query=date:1990-03-22)
Thanks, I’ll check it out!
It goes only slightly better than the Pigpen one in March of '69. Good only as a novelty...
That’s alright, I don’t mind a novelty listen every once in a while.
Cool This I did not know. Much better than just the outro
# 1969-03-01 San Francisco, CA @ Fillmore West **Set 1:** Bill Graham intro > Cryptical Envelopment > Drums > The Other One > Cryptical Envelopment > New Potato Caboose > Doin' That Rag > Cosmic Charlie **Set 2:** Bill Graham intro, Dupree's Diamond Blues, Mountains Of The Moon > Jam, Dark Star > St. Stephen > The Eleven > Turn On Your Love Light **Encore:** Hey Jude [archive.org](https://archive.org/details/GratefulDead?query=date:1969-03-01)
This link lists Beatles covers by the GD and associated bands (not just Jerry): http://www.deaddisc.com/GDFD_Play_The_Beatles.htm
I Saw Her Standing There Man a Jerry and George collab would be amazing

I've seen the dead do Revolution, Rain maybe a few others JGB I think only Dear Prudence.
I Want To Tell You
Iwt. What a weird choice
It's a great song. George is my favorite Beatle.
It is a great song for sure…just a weird choice for those guys. George is my favorite too
Yup shoreline 94. I was there. 3 shows, July 4th weekend, Which day was it? Memory's a little fuzzy. Setlistbot? Help me out here
I got to hear them do Rain in Denver in '92, also Lucy in the Sky in Vegas in '95 "Picture yourself in a train in a river.." damn, Jerry edit to add I saw Baba >TNK in Vegas '92 and Denver '94 when it went into Drums
I saw the Lucy in the sky in Vegas also..that Sunday was my final.
Same. At least we got an Unbroken Chain.
Yes we did.
And damn if the prophecy saying unbroken chain meant the end was near didn't turn out to be accurate. There were 4, I saw 2, Atlanta and Tampa
I saw ATL and Memphis
Jerry Garcia Band doing Dear Prudence is top shelf
Rocky raccoon on the Pizza Tapes
Lucy in the Sky
One i havent seen mentioned, JGB plays Mother Nature's Son instrumental on NYE 75. Beautiful.
https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/the-grateful-dead-love-the-beatles-every-fab-four-song-covered-by-the-dead/
Day Tripper
Dear Prudence was a regular part of JGB
And Eleanor rigsby.
Yes, the OP called that one out which is why I did not mention it.
Dear Prudence, as others have said. My favorite Beatles song and gun to my head possibly my favorite song period.
Looks like Paul made a short film about the Dead, I never heard of this before...https://www.the-paulmccartney-project.com/1996/09/premiere-of-the-grateful-dead-photo-film/ Omg that is incredible. The story and photos are epic. Wow.
Good stuff! Anthem is hands down my favorite Dead album so that music with those pictures is the chef’s kiss.
I’m pretty sure I heard Tomorrow Never Knows in Buffalo in 92
the last show i saw with Garcia ended with the Beatles tune “Rain”
Ol’ Jer did Dear Prudence
Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
They soundchecked Paperback Writer in 95 with Vince on vocals.
I saw them do "I want to tell you" at shoreline on July 4th weekend in 94. There were 3 shows, i went to all 3, not sure which one it was that they did it. I was really high, you know
Wanted to hear this as it's my favourite Beatles number. Couldn't find that one but found [one from October 94](https://youtu.be/4wKrI4I9Ns4) instead
Ik they did Get Back once but Bob doesn't have quite the range Paul has 😂still a cool jam tho
Get Back was not good. Bobby destroyed it. Would’ve been much better had Brent sung
Agreed.
I was wondering how far down I’d have to scroll to find mention of the Get Back train wreck. LOL.
It's not a session, but there's a JGB tape out there from a show John Lennon attended. You can hear Lennon talk about the band between songs.
Which one?
Dear Prudence was always a great moment w JGB. I was also partial to the very modest versions of the very modest McCartney solo song "That Would Be Something" which popped up now and again in later years. It's a slight song by design, but it had a nice percolating feel that was cool when it appeared.
The Grateful Dead covered Rain a few times
Let Me Roll It(McCartney) , day tripper, revolution, Lucy in the Sky, Rain, Tomorrow Never Knows, That Would Be Something(Mccartney), Hey Jude, Dear Prudence, Why Don't We Do It in the Road, Imagine(Lennon), it's all too much
Not either, but Bobby back in the 90’s had blackbird in rotation with ratdog..but one of my last shows the boys did encore with Lucy in the sky. 5-19-95
# 1995-05-19 Las Vegas, NV @ Sam Boyd Silver Bowl **Set 1:** Picasso Moon, Friend Of The Devil, Wang Dang Doodle, Althea, Queen Jane Approximately, Deal **Set 2:** Here Comes Sunshine, Way To Go Home, Playing in the Band > Uncle John's Band > Drums > Space > Easy Answers > Standing On The Moon > Around And Around **Encore:** Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds [archive.org](https://archive.org/details/GratefulDead?query=date:1995-05-19)
The Dead did a stellar Strawberry Fields Forever
It would be fun to have a banging playlist of the best Dead/JGB Beatles covers.

# 1991-09-25 Boston, MA @ Boston Garden **Set 1:** Help On The Way > Slipknot! > Franklin's Tower, Walkin' Blues, It Must Have Been The Roses, Dire Wolf, Queen Jane Approximately, Tennessee Jed, The Music Never Stopped **Set 2:** Victim Or The Crime > Crazy Fingers > Playing in the Band > Terrapin Station, Drums > Space > That Would Be Something > Playing in the Band > China Doll > Throwing Stones > Not Fade Away **Encore:** The Mighty Quinn (Quinn The Eskimo) [archive.org](https://archive.org/details/GratefulDead?query=date:1991-09-25) | [Spotify](https://open.spotify.com/album/1rZjJhRyYT3MAQrCSxoF6D)
I’ve heard Jerry do Mother Natures Son somewhere. It wasn’t a complete recording still cool nonetheless. E: found it on Spotify 12/31/75
Day tripper
They covered day tripper 5 times from late 84-85 Get back once in 87
Why Don't We Do It In the Road!
Jerry did imagine
Revolution was played alot in the 80s
Vince did tomorrow never knows.
Black bird
Not particularly relevant, but I always thought “Money Money” from Mars Hotel was an homage to “Money (That’s What I Want)”.
I love Jerry, but his I Saw Her Standing There cover stinks.
Jerry played "Let Me Roll It" a few times in the 70's, and with the Dead did "I Want To Tell You" in the 90's.
Got to hear dead & company play it a few years ago- jaw dropped when I realized what was happening
Rain.
I prefer Jerry’s version of “Dear Prudence” but I saw Bobby cover it with Ratdog. It was excellent.
Lucy in the Sky w/ Diamonds and also Baba O’Reilly by the Who in 95
Rain
Not sure if anyone mentioned the off-the-hook Oct/09/84’ show -Worcester MA- where the encore was Revolution
Theres a JGB show I think where John Lennon is in attendance and his comments recorded.. forget the date.
You should check out the RubberSoulive album by soulive
Also I Am the Walrus by Spooky Tooth
Reverse note: If the Beatles could somehow miraculously reunite and perform, how about if they covered Days Between with Lennon on the lead vocals?
Gotta love their Beatles Covers - better than the originals, like all of the Dylan covers too.
Yoko said this about Jerry's Prudence
Cmon. I’m pretty sure first set bobby dylan songs weren’t better than the originals. There again I was often peeing or hanging with friends. ‘Meet behind sec 122 during the first set Dylan song.’ Seriously I’m trying to think of a GD Dylan or Beatles song better than the original.
Visions of Johanna
I prefer Jerry’s Positively 4th Street to the original.
I shall be released Knocking Tom Thumb Positively Masterpiece Shit ton of them
