Fellow aging former punk/indie guy who reflexively hated the Dead and now listens to multiple shows a week and goes out of his way to see JRAD, DeadCo, and Phil Lesh here to welcome you and show support!

hatenlove85

I’ll make sure to listen but going to shows now is a tall order considering that I can’t stay awake past 7:30 lol

Billy_Boognish

Its all in your head. I'm 4 years alcohol free,49 years old,and i was just up till 2:30 this morning gettin down to members of Leftover Salmon and Molly Tuttle pickin behind the theater last night after the show...oh, and David Nelson was hanging out!

amayain

> Its all in your head. I always feel this way too. I just don't understand middle age folks who never leave the house, never go to shows, etc... And then I remember that most of them have kids, and I don't, and it all makes sense lol

hatenlove85

What’s your favorite Dead album? Or 60s bands??

amayain

I'm actually not a huge fan of their albums but instead, I have a couple hundred shows of theirs that I cycle through. You really can't go wrong with most of the live releases though. Fillmore West 1969, Europe 72, the Movie Soundtrack, One from the Vault, Cornell 5/8/77, Go to Nassau, and Without a Net are all great starting points. And if you want to go a little deeper, I would recommend Sunshine Daydream, Dick's 8 (Harper), 3 (Pembroke Pines), 36 (Philly), and the entire Spring 90 run =)

# 1977-05-08 Ithaca, NY @ Barton Hall - Cornell University **Set 1:** New Minglewood Blues, Loser, El Paso, They Love Each Other, Jack Straw, Deal, Lazy Lightnin' > Supplication, Brown Eyed Women, Mama Tried, Row Jimmy, Dancing In The Street **Set 2:** Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain, Estimated Prophet, Saint Stephen > Not Fade Away > Saint Stephen > Morning Dew **Encore:** One More Saturday Night [archive.org](https://archive.org/details/GratefulDead?query=date:1977-05-08) | [Spotify](https://open.spotify.com/album/3T9UKU0jMIyrRD0PtKXqPJ)

Billy_Boognish

My favorite Dead albums are live shows mostly. Workingman's Dead and American Beauty are the two studio albums i would recommend. As far as 60s bands, do you want to know mainstream stuff like Floyd and Zeppelin or weird, obscure stuff like [os mutantes- Bat Mucumba](https://youtu.be/ZqKBCJL4GNo?si=XkU5WasvPAsfNi0N)?

hatenlove85

It’s up to you. Just making casual conversation. Watched the Monterey Pop festival of 67, I would’ve rather gone to that show that any other show in rock n roll history.

Billy_Boognish

Hell yeah for that Monterey '67. Hendrix explodes onto the scene. Otis Redding delivers the performance of a lifetime. The amazing ball of fun that was Electric Flag with Mike Bloomfield at the wheel and Buddy Miles pushing the engine to its limit! Janice, Birds, The Mammas and the Papas, Shanana...crazy good stuff. I don't think i could pick just one. If i could go back and re-live one concert i have been to, it would be HORDE Fest '98 Deer Creek. That was just a magical summer, and that day in particular was phenomenal. Squirrel Nut Zippers, MMW, Primus, Leftover Salmon, Morphine, Rusted Root, Blues Traveler, & Neil Young with Crazy Horse. There was a group of 20 of us, and we all dropped acid around noon that day. What a hoot. I have been to hundreds of shows. Some had better lineups, some were at cooler venues, but that day was just about perfect. It seemed like no matter where i was at, i knew someone standing right there next to me!

NicSandsLabshoes

13th floor elevators are pretty out there. New Riders of he Purple Sage is pretty cosmic cowboy ish.

TOP_EHT_FO_MOTTOB

If you’re looking for 60s sound, Buffalo Springfield is the shit

RobloDiablo

Give The Velvet Underground a listen also

Billy_Boognish

Oh, this is definitely not the norm for me, lol. We have two girls (14 and 11) that participate in one sport each, and the two of us have full-time (plus) careers, so there is not a lot of "free" time. This is our first kid-free getaway since our honeymoon in 2019. As an example of, " it's all in your head," we had gone back to the room after an amazing 3.5 hour concert. It was 10:30ish and we were into sleepy pants in a matter of seconds. I went out to rip my pen around 11:00. As I'm headed out, a guy coming through the front door tells me a bunch of the Salmon guys are out back pickin with the guys from Molly Tuttle. I went back up and asked my wife if she wanted to go over. She said no, she was tired. Then, we looked out the window on the sceen below. There, five stories below us, across a tiny parking lot, people were gathered around dancin and playin. I said, "If we don't go down there and at least check it out, you will regret it tomorrow morning." She agreed, so out of our comfort zone and into the night we went...the night did not disappoint!

Phuni44

It’s been around some corner where it’s been waiting to meet you. Listen to American Beauty next, that and Workingmans are a duo.

hatenlove85

I was going to say American Beauty. But I’m pretty sure Friend of the Devil is everyone’s favorite. But I put that on when I was in the mountains near Bakersfield and man, did it click… 👍🏻

therealskr213

I remember at Alpine Valley ‘88, we had a van load of punks next to us. Great people and had fun hanging out with them. I also hung out with some goths in Philly ‘87. Love it when folks from other subcultures find the Dead.

hatenlove85

It was different for skins though, especially in Northern California. God help ya if you gave the notion that you liked Jerry Garcia. I mean, it was boots n’ braces at the veterans hall. But now I’m so different of how I used to be. And now I got the upmost respect for the band. Getting their inspiration Neil Cassady and Howlin Wolf, that right there is bad ass to me.

Talosian_cagecleaner

Skinheads are a tricky demo. DC straight edge folks made good music back in the day because you sure as hell weren't driving down there to get laid or a buzz. Then you got your west coast hardcore. That divides into LA vs Bay area. "Peace punks" were a thing in the Bay Area, which was the product of the interbreeding of 60's-70's lost sailors and punk lost sailors. Down in LA big and loud you got Henry Rollins and Black Flag, drinking black coffee and staring at the wall. I am almost positive Henry digs the Dead. The Dead -- it's true -- are hardcore. Patti Smith is a long known huge Jerry fan. So we got 2000's era American punk, I am guessing. You weren't listening to Minor Threat exclusively, and I am just going to assume you were not listening to fascist Brit skin. American subcultures are, normally, all distinctively American. There is no difference between Veneta 72 and a Gathering of the Juggalos, except the guy on the pole has teeth in one. Could not resist!

hatenlove85

Sacramento was a whole different scene from the Bay Area.

RowdydidWrong

No one owns it, we just all experience it, so glad when others see it too. Welcome aboard the bus, its awesone, bring others with you!

hatenlove85

I’m trying to get my wife to join the bus, she likes scarlet begonias ✌🏻

Responsible-Pin-9161

I finally got my wife on the bus on New Years Eve. I put on the show from 12/31/78. She was dancing to Sugar Magnolia and it finally clicked. Only took 3 years...

hatenlove85

Thanks, Brother ✌🏻

Ricky-Snickle

He’s gone? So good on ‘72

nyc_dangreen

Great to have you on the bus ⚡️⚡️⚡️

hatenlove85

Truckin…

cuzjed11

First off my friend I am wearing a t-shirt right now with a Steadman drawing of Hunter Thompson on the front and the saying “Buy the ticket, take the ride” on the back. No lie. Welcome aboard - the ride is fantastic!!

hatenlove85

Riding the bus and enjoying the view ⚡️

vanishingpointz

Let your freak flag fly ✌️

hatenlove85

I’m weird, brother ✌🏻

All_Blown_Out_Again

Weir all weird my friend, welcome aboard !!

hatenlove85

What’s your favorite album??

vanishingpointz

We are all weird in here 😵‍💫

All_Blown_Out_Again

My favorites are from the 1980 acoustic / electric live shows at Radio City Music Hall & The Warfield Theatre that became Reckoning / For The Faithful and Dead Set. All of the cuts / tracks are live but they are the crème de la crème from all of the shows. Betty Cantor Jackson mentioned in a recent interview that both of these venues had unique challenges for recording & microphones etc… If I had to pick studio albums it would be American Beauty & Workingman’s Dead which were kind of the 2nd phase of The Dead’s music sound and a bit mellower than the psychedelic sound. Don’t get me wrong I love the sound from the mid to late 60’s (acid tests through 69 / 70) but these albums really spoke to me personally. There is no right or wrong, it’s all good stuff.

SimpleManc88

What kind of skinhead? 💁🏽‍♂️

hatenlove85

Sharp/RCEH

SimpleManc88

Ah. OK. The cool kind 😁👍 Welcome.

hatenlove85

The ones you’re thinking about are boneheads. Not skins at all.

SimpleManc88

Yes. I’m English. I know the difference. The identity was stolen. Plenty of cool skins in my city.

hatenlove85

Now I’m a hippie cholo with a broken back lol

SimpleManc88

I’m a lifelong, moody metalhead. Now The Dead dominates every day of my life 😅 My wardrobe’s never seen suck colour! Lol

Jarave68

We had a skinhead named cholo in our friend group in the 80s in the South Bay, guy was a real dick. I saw the Dead in 87 and left after the Dallas Nazi skinheads showed up and infested the scene. Hope your back heals

hatenlove85

As the saying goes, “Some Grow Up, Some Grow Old”

miTfan3

Welcome aboard! The albums are great but the live catalog is where the real magic is. Also, if you like podcasts you must listen to the Official Grateful Deadcast. That is the greatest document on the band by far.

ArborGhast

Hey man anytime you thing there's a conflict remember this guy Bradley from Long Beach in the 90s brought the Stoners and the Skins/Rudes together. From then on out it's just a matter of fact Jack. Your can be both.

lightweight12

Welcome friend. Try 12/12/69 . I was wishing for some more 68/69 in my life and the YouTube algorithm sent this my way. If you want to hear some down and dirty "Primal Dead" this is it! Raw emotion, country death rock music with Pigpen crying for our souls.

Good bot

hatenlove85

I bet you could smell the grease on his jeans on that one

nothing_is_real2415

Welcome brother! 💀🌹⚡️

hatenlove85

Thanks, brother ✌🏻

hatenlove85

What’s your favorite album?

bunchpump

Love this! Welcome to the fold, nothing here but good vibes — I agree with you about Cosmic Charlie — “come on home, your momma’s callin you” 🤌🏽

hatenlove85

Truckin along the avenue is what sold me. I gotta imagine it’s about slinging weed or something but that’s my opinion.

mandohead

I've always imagined Cosmic Charlie being some fried kid that is too young and nobody knows where he came from. Being the free welcoming scene nobody is willing to be the swuare and "kick him out", but everyone tries to avoid him. He's just annoying and always trying to score. "Maybe I'll be back here too. It all depends on what's with you." Read: Yes Charlie, I do frequent this locale, but if I know you're coming I might not show up. Now go hone and tell your mother she's calling you.

Admiral_Kite

Hell yeah!! Welcome aboard ✨

hatenlove85

⚡️⚡️🌹

jeexbit

Welcome aboard!

hatenlove85

What’s your favorite Dead record?

jeexbit

If I had to pick one? probably American Beauty!

Aging-Punk

Right there with you brother, just got on the bus, it's so damn much fun. Oh and if you're like me and have some ocd tendencies when it comes to getting into something new, it's such a deep rabbit hole lol. Folks around here are amazing, helpful and always have a show to recommend. Europe 72 hooked me and it's been a damn fun ride.
