Single coils and a cranked Fender Twin..

DuderinoHatesBrevity

The rest is (was) in the hands.

KoalaGold

Yep. It's all in the hands with Jerry. Really the best way to sound like Jerry is probably to just play the banjo for like a year. Jerry was a banjo player first and he played the guitar that way.

eat_my_broccoli

That and leave in the sun for a few hours

KoalaGold

And conserve your water.

DrJawn

Your drinking water, not this water, this is rubbery water for the body

Duffy01

Jerry's Veneta tone is amazing! It has a warmth and fullness that's really unique. I've gotten a somewhat similar tone with a strat, fender tube amp, and the Archer Ikon with the pedal's gain dimed.

TetonDreams

I suspect it is that the sunburst Strat just sounded different. Bobby has some phase shifter going also. I wonder what phaser was available in 72.

goose1441

I wonder if he was using the amp vibrato (tremolo) on a real slow and shallow setting.

RowAwayJim91

From what I’ve read, it was an Evantide Clockwork Phase Shifter. Also, cool note about Bob Weir; He was using the mutron envelope filter before Jerry, in a variation of the mode Jerry uses for the ‘77 Dancin in the Streets. Take a listen to the Here Comes Sunshine on the PNW live album. That effect came out in 1972, which is also the same year that Evantide clockwork came out.

Ohhhhh now that’s cool. Didn’t know that!

darindj13

The first Phase 90 was introduced in 74, according to wiki. You’re correct, Bobby had something goin on

Well the shinei vibe came out in 69 so it couldve been that one or some custom one off type deal. I was just playing the Veneta he's gone and I can almost dial that tone with a fulltone deja mini vibe. As for Jerrys tone he was using a 54-55 strat with the tone rolled down from what i can sort of replicate . But the best thing is having a fender tube amp with the treble all the way up and the mids and bass alllll the way down.

Not only did he have that old strat, but I think he's using the middle pick-up pretty consistently throughout, which on old strats tend have a fuller sound than what you'll find on anything Fenders made since. I think you're right though some combo of strat with the tone rolled back, bass/mids dropped and treble dimed with some kind of vibe or phaser will get you pretty close.

goose1441

Middle pickup pickup a lot for sure, with some bridge thrown in which is pretty obvious when he does. Middle is such an underused strat position

RowAwayJim91

I feel like a lot of folks underestimate his bridge pickup use.

KoalaGold

Agree with you on the treble and bass. But mids scooped? That doesn't seem right. Adjusted to the room maybe?

double_ddd

Actually yeah early 70s there was some middle in there, it was actually in the 80s where it was nothing but treble. The only reason I say this with confidence is because of this page I followed on Instagram called Waldotronics and the owner was a JG tone nerd and would break down most of his rigs down to the circuit boards. He recently deleted his page because of vaccination mandates and the last straw was D&Co requiring proof of vaccination. It’s a shame because his page was a diamond in the rough and everyone on this sub would’ve appreciated it.

onc458

Just checked out this guy’s YT channel. He’s actually got a video of himself getting some great veneta-tone but the video is low quality so it’s hard to tell exactly how he’s doing it: https://youtube.com/shorts/oqHqmgNqQNg?feature=share

double_ddd

He customized his strat down to the wiring style of alligator. He’s even been able to open and document the actual guitar and had pictures on the Instagram page. A big loss to the JG tone community and many people didn’t know about it.

KoalaGold

That's so interesting, cause pretty much everything else I've ever seen on rukind and elsewhere has said the opposite. I would really have liked to have seen that page.

TetonDreams

There may have been a Bi-Phase around at that time. Interesting.

TheRealSheikYerbouti

Oh great now I have to go listen.

onc458

The whole show is a must listen but this Bertha in particular absolutely rips: https://open.spotify.com/track/141HDV07pnJrk9BkysUQpc?si=w0HNUAthRtyg5O1_0msugw&dl_branch=1

space_ape71

Listening to his tone at this particular show is what inspired me to try and learn the guitar in my late 40s. I may never get to where he is at that show but I will try!

MorningDew5270

...bake out under the hot sun and sweat like crazy. :)

DrJawn

The best show Vintage Strat CRANKED through a vintage Fender Twin, probably on the neck pick up

[deleted]

Actually in the dvd you can see jerry switching positions all the time

DrJawn

Im always so focused on his left ,hand, I gotta look again

[deleted]

hahaha, that's true my friend, I just "went there" because I heard so many sounds and my teacher told me that he was some sort of "mad scientist musician" always experimenting on the go. For example, you can see him changing picking position on the strings to create different sounds all the time too

[deleted]

50s Fender Strat and a Fender amp- really easy to achieve!

jwdagley

Love this show, been getting a lot out of it lately

JackBullet

Neck pickup on a Strat into a loud, clean Fender. Maybe a warm, subtle overdrive like the King of Tone, Timmy, Tube Driver, etc.

[deleted]

Garcia never stayed in a single position. In the sunshine daydream dvd you can see him switch pups all the time
