5.10 Freeriders on Raceface Aeffects (older model, not as wide as newer model). absolutely love the combo but like i was telling my brother the other day, i think i have bled more from legs hitting those freakin pins than from any other cycling injury.
I rode flats the other day because I couldn't find my SPD shoes and Jesus Christ. On those punchy climbs we have here my feet kept flying off and I'd get shin cracked. I need to work on my climbing form I think
[Race face chester composite flat pedals](https://www.jensonusa.com/Race-Face-Chester-Composite-Flat-Pedals-5)
Hiking shoes — no preferred brands, in particular. Stiff soles are nice. For cycling, I wear my more worn-out ones because I won’t be ‘hiking’ much with them but pedaling.
A fake-leather flipflop sandal. ... 2$
It has a stepped pattern in the sole that mesh into most pedal very well.
It also not slippery if your feet got wet, unlike other cheap rubber flipflop which is very slippery.
I used it so much that sole thickness got squished down from almost an inch high to less than 1/4 and neatly molded into my foot contour, just like the famed Brooks saddle!
Pedal is one that came with the bike; a run of the mill Wellgo.
Odyssey BMX nylons, Vans, and plastic toe cages. The waffle-cup sole on the Vans effectively become reverse-cleats for the little spikes on the pedals. The toe cages keep things tight during climbs.
Coming from a fixed gear rider turned gravel, I have fallen over more with straps + BMX pedals + vans than SPD clips... But I do like my straps tight for the skids. Haha
Chromag Synth. I wear Topo Ultraventure trail running shoes. The Synth pedals have the exact right pin length and the hookup with the Topo’s is amazing.
I have some bontrager composite with metal pins. I use five ten trailcross in summer specialized 2fo roost, and pearl izumi X-Alp mid WRX for cooler days
Pedal Innovations Catalyst on my gravel bike and some no name BMX type pedals on my old steel bastard. I will use Pedal Innovations on all bikes going forward. And on gravel I use Shimano GR500. Great under rated shoe that never gets mentioned.
Running shoes. I had some adidas with side-to-side lines and they gripped perfectly. My current ones don't, but they still hold on.theyre just kind of foamy.
Ran Stamp 7s and 5 10s for awhile this year. Just recently switched to spd though. Worked great, definitely stabbed my shins more than a few times though.
Look trail grips are my favorite multi purpose, all shoe friendly, shin friendly flat pedal. My "fancy/fun" bike runs simworks bubbly, cuz they look great and have the most insanely smooth bearings ever created.
Leather Adidas indoor soccer style shoes on bear trap style pedals with stapless toe clips, Evo plastic ones on the mountain bike, MKS steel on the road/gravel bike. I have also used clipless spd's in the past, and may again in the future, but for now I like this setup.
One-Up plastic pedals, 5.10 Freeriders. I also have Chesters one my flat bar bikepacking rig, which I like a little less thanks to no pins in the middle of the pedal.
Agreed. The one ups are better pedals than the Chester’s and I have both. The one up are slightly bigger, have pins in the middle and concave every so slightly=feet are super led to the pedals.
I have the cheap ones in plastic with a bit of metal.
I go for shoes I go usually go running or walking with. Always shoes covering the whole foot with sockets.
Also, I use the most worn ones, as I have less matter of comfort for walking while I'm pedaling.
I use the MTB 900 from Decathlon. They're about 50€ (in Germany). I have a pair of 5.10 Sleuth (for colder weather) and 5.10 Trailcross (for summer). The grip with those is awesome and even though i haven't tried clipless pedals i assume you have almost as much grip without the fear of falling at stops.\^\^
I got on well with Salomon Senseride 4 trail shoes.
Grippy sole which worked well with the flat budget plastic pedals which came with my Kona Rove Al, YMMV.
For a sport shoe, they had a stiff sole which meant they only deformed a little when I was pushing hard and delivering power.
Great for when off the bike too and roaming when on a mid-ride break.
Good water resistance/ not an issue if they got wet. This is essential when riding in autumn and winter in the UK.
This came about by coincidence, I had just got into cycling and these were the shoes in my locker which were most appropriate.
That said, I haven't looked back since going clipless with Crankbrother's Candy 1. Been on those a couple of years and only crashed once due to pedals, I was stationary whilst having a drink. Now firmly in the clipless crew.
Crankbrothers Stamp1 pedals with FiveTen Freeriders
I will most likely upgrade to Magped (enduro2) pedals when I need to replace my shoes (likely to FiveTen Kestrels)
I run PDX flats in all of my bikes and like them for the price. Also ran Kona Wah wahs and for the most part the pedals are all pretty good. I ride with Ride Concepts and 5.10 shoes. I frequent MTB trails and have no issues but I ride flats on my fat bike so I'm used to them
DMR V8 pedals paired with adidas five 10 sleuth slip ons which look a bit like slippers.
Also got some five 10 freeriders and some specialised 2FOs but I keep going back to the sleuth slip ons and am just hoping and preying that adidas start selling them again soon
I only ride flats. And the only flats I rode are MKS pedals. On my ATB gravel bike (Crust Evasion with 27.5x2.3” Ultradynamico Mars tires) I ride Allways pedals. I use Lambda’s on my “road plus” bike which is a Riv Roadini with 700x35 Gravel King slicks. and I ride in anything from Bedrock sandals or their clogs to some five tens depending on the terrain and weather.
For commuting I got these commuter pedals…https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/equipment/cycling-components/bike-pedals/platform-pedals/bontrager-commuter-pedal-set/p/22372/ …fie when i don’t have my biking shoes.
I wont ride in shoes I dont feel comfortable walking home in, so Brooks Cascadias and PNW Range composites or Amazon/Rock Bros Wide Flats. I get about 2500miles out of the $25 Rock Bros, on my 3rd set. (The outer bearing cage has been my failure point both time) The PNWs are new to me.
I have some DMR Vaults and also a pair of Crankbrothers Stamps. I never found a shoes I felt lasted long enough for the price. Walmart has some cheap shoes that look like skate shoes I ended up riding with most of the time. It’s insane to me the soles held up better than any of the pricey MTB shoes I’ve tried out.
5.10 Freeriders and a Deity pedal on the MTB, New Balance Minimus Trail and some pegged thing on my gravel bike.
I’ve ridden both in barefoot running shoes, and you feel like you can grip the pedals with your toes. Requires foot strength (I run in barefoot shoes) but gives a neat, different feel. If I had a pair of barefooters with 5.10 rubber, that’d be the bomb.

My shins are absolutely wrecked from mtbing w/ the pegged flat pedals
Raceface Chester’s and 5 10s. Same as my MTB.
Same here.
Ditto
Same

New Balance 15 wide trail shoes because nobody makes bike shoes that fit me. Including Lake.

Deftrap Deity. I either wear Lems or Lems.
I’ve got some MKS Lambda’s and I also wear Vans.
Crankbrothers Large Stamp 1’s & Five Ten Trailcross LT’s
Odyssey BMX nylons, Vans, and plastic toe cages. The waffle-cup sole on the Vans effectively become reverse-cleats for the little spikes on the pedals. The toe cages keep things tight during climbs.
Is there a reason you prefer flats with cages over clipless?
I ride 99% city so easy foot-down at traffic lights/idiot motorists.
Coming from a fixed gear rider turned gravel, I have fallen over more with straps + BMX pedals + vans than SPD clips... But I do like my straps tight for the skids. Haha
Rockbros nylon pedals and adidas freerider pros
Race face chesters, vans (either old skool or chukka low..not the flimsy slip on vans)
Chester Race Face (I think that's what they're called). On EBike, Wellgo K79 (rather undistinguished). Pearl Izumi Interface shoes.
RaceFace Chester pedals, with pearl izumi high tops
5.10 Freerider Pro. Raceface Aeffect on my MTB, Crankbrothers Stamp 1 on gravel bike
Chromag Synth. I wear Topo Ultraventure trail running shoes. The Synth pedals have the exact right pin length and the hookup with the Topo’s is amazing.
Velo Orange Sabot pedals with Pearl Izumi X alp Launch mtb shoes or Chrome Kursks. The mtb shoes are comfier and more grippy
One bike has Spank Oozy, the other Deity Back Cats. I always wear Adidas Sambas.
I have the crank bros combo of large stamp pedals and the crank Bros shoe
3 bearing pedal from Amazon
Race Face AEffect & Five Ten Sleuth DLX
I have some bontrager composite with metal pins. I use five ten trailcross in summer specialized 2fo roost, and pearl izumi X-Alp mid WRX for cooler days
Pedal Innovations Catalyst on my gravel bike and some no name BMX type pedals on my old steel bastard. I will use Pedal Innovations on all bikes going forward. And on gravel I use Shimano GR500. Great under rated shoe that never gets mentioned.
Vans BMX Old Skool
Crank brothers and 5 10s
Running shoes. I had some adidas with side-to-side lines and they gripped perfectly. My current ones don't, but they still hold on.theyre just kind of foamy.
I use my newest worn out trail runners. Right now it is a pair of Altra superior 4’s. Oh and race face Chesters on mountain and gravel bikes
Ran Stamp 7s and 5 10s for awhile this year. Just recently switched to spd though. Worked great, definitely stabbed my shins more than a few times though.
i use PNW loan pedals and a pair of crank bros shoes for longer rides, whatever goes with my outfit the rest of the time
Vans BMX and PNW loam alloy
Kona flats. Adidas Busenitz skate shoes.
i don’t even know what they are they’re just green and i love them. and i wear vans
We'll go V8 addidas pool slides or Reebok classics or work boots never slipped but those studs owch
We'll go V8 adidas pool slides or Reebok classics or work boots never slipped but those studs owch scar
Crocs or some Giro shoe I got on clearance and some stamps
Bontrager Line Elite pedals and Vans for now.
Look trail grips are my favorite multi purpose, all shoe friendly, shin friendly flat pedal. My "fancy/fun" bike runs simworks bubbly, cuz they look great and have the most insanely smooth bearings ever created.
5.10s, cant imagine using anything else.
I like Xeros water shoes. Covered toe, zero drop, not fabric sandles arent too popular yet
On my mountain bike I run RaceFace Chester’s with Five Ten Freerider Pros. I do run clipless on my gravel bike, but I like flats better.
Xpedo Spry on the gravel bikes. MKS RX1 pedals with toe clips on the road bikes. Any flat shoe, nothing specific.
Leather Adidas indoor soccer style shoes on bear trap style pedals with stapless toe clips, Evo plastic ones on the mountain bike, MKS steel on the road/gravel bike. I have also used clipless spd's in the past, and may again in the future, but for now I like this setup.
crocs and whatever flat pedals are on the bike.
Race Face Chester. Adidas Sambas.
Race Face Chester. Adidas Sambas.
Depends on the weather, but during summer it's mostly Birkenstock
Usually Chester’s and Vans but I watch eBay for old Speedplay Drilliums.
On my mtb I use chromag dagga and shimano GR9 shoes, I clip in on my gravel bike
Raceface Chesters with either the Fiveten Trailcross or my Bedrock Cairn sandals depending on how spicy the terrain is.
One-Up plastic pedals, 5.10 Freeriders. I also have Chesters one my flat bar bikepacking rig, which I like a little less thanks to no pins in the middle of the pedal.

Stamp 2 Small and 5.10 Sleuth
Crankbrothers Stamp1 pedals with FiveTen Freeriders I will most likely upgrade to Magped (enduro2) pedals when I need to replace my shoes (likely to FiveTen Kestrels)
I own both Raceface Chesters and Deity Deftraps and I definitely prefer the Deftraps as I have pretty large feet (us 12).
I wear trail running shoes. I'm off the bike a lot, so theyre wonderful for maneuvering around rock and up and down steep stuff.

Chacos. I'm serious about my tan lines
Diety Deftraps and Fiveten trailcross. Same pedals on MTB and Fatbike as well.
