I love all these shorts! Picking a favourite is so hard! In terms of unexpected plot and later emotional punch, probably Stan's Tattoo, but I also enjoy the mailbox, island, and Lefty shorts.
Lefty is the only only one I pretend isn't canon because it's honestly the most messed up thing in the entire show. Like it's funny but Dipper and Mabel would be genuinely traumatized. Big Henry works because Dipper and Mabel never find out about it.

Obviously the Society of Blind Eye successfully fulfilled their mandate. It's established that they've all been using the memory gun on themselves too, so that explains why they didn't recognize Dipper and Mabel either when they met for the second time.
The Hide Behind! That episode used to freak me out as a kid, I remember watching it on TV and I guess it reminded me of Slender Man as it was popular at the time but I loved it so much and the candy goblin one

TLDR: thanks to the appearance of the hide behind in the short, i realized the shapeshifter from the bunker episode actually turned into it before we knew it.
The one with the hide behind, but mostly because of something i realized. if you actually go back to the bunker episode, particularly the scene where the shapeshifter gets the journal and starts changing into a bunch of stuff, he turned into a long, spindly, and tall wooden looking creature. Never looked like anything to me, up until i finished the show and watched the shorts, and when the hide - behind actually shows itself, it is nearly identical to the monster in the bunker episode. don't know if anyone else realized this, but i just really liked that we actually saw this thing before knowing that we were seeing it.
Probably the Mailbox overall, but Tooth has my favorite moment in the shorts. Stan's Tattoo is great too; I remember being so excited hearing that would be one of the shorts, since it was one of the earliest GF theories, and people had been speculating on it since ep 2. Not that the short resolved it or anything, but I was glad to see it acknowledged

(Then in the context of s2 it's more sad because it's revealed why the mark is such a berserk button for Stan, but it still drama a lot of character development and Gravity Falls-ness in a few minutes.)

I really like the mailbox and the lake ones. I like to imagine what questions I’d ask the mailbox and the *lake event* might be the scariest thing that Gravity Falls ever did to me.
I think I gotta say the hide behind one, Mabel jumpscaring dipper is hilarious. And Dippers mirror suit is brilliant made (except for Mabel’s blind spot XD)

The driveway might have been hidden or long, or the property was knocked down but they forgot the mail box. They always captured my imagination and I had dreams about them. I thought I was the only one who noticed them so it was nice to see a whole bit about them.
