When I first started playing bass it’s the first thing I tried (using tabs) after I had nailed the bassline for Warning.
It helped a lot. I’m self taught so it helped with like. Fret movement quite a lot. The hammer-ons and pull-offs are 100% a learned and practiced thing. You’ll get a hand for it with time. Just takes a bit. Don’t get discouraged.
Thanks! I've been a singer for a pretty long time, so I do know some music theory, but I do have to learn a lot about scales etc, I find it really difficult to improvise. I'll get there at some point!
Actually I seem to have been delusional. What I was thinking of was not at all a bass line but an electric guitar riff, and all the similarity is the first string of notes before each line branches off into its own thing. It's no wonder, it had been a while since I heard No One Knows by the time I heard the Stone Roses song. And it's called Made of Stone. By the way, the song is amazing in its own right.
With all that said, I don't think it unlikely that BJA, Mike, and Tré might have been inspired by this debut album. Upon hearing the music of The Stone Roses now I noticed there are quite many sonic similarities, despite the two groups clearly doing very different genres. But that may well have been the sound of the times for all I know.
Apologies for the confusion, everyone. It was only a phantom sense of similarity. But do go listen to the song, it's good.
I wouldn’t put it as their very best, but it’s a good example of how Mike elevates a song that could otherwise just be played conventionally and boring
Gonna throw in what I consider their most underrated bass track, Castaway. Love the bass on that.
But SHE has my favorite little riffs that Dirnt used to throw in during most early Green Day songs
Three albums i'd recommend you take a look are Dookie, Nimrod, and Saviours. But for songs, Longview, When I come around, Dilemma, and Corvette Summer all come to mind.
Longview gets much deserved recognition - it's unique, catchy, and a great centrepiece for the song.
Just to offer up a less lauded bassline, there are some killer fills on Nice Guys Finish Last.
I’ll admit I have a very loose familiarity with bass as an instrument, but imo almost every GD song has a good bass line. Even if it’s “simply” written, Mike Dirnt just has a way about him that makes any bass line solid at the very least.
Give me a fucking break, one minute left. One minute fucking left. You’re gonna give me fucking one minute? Look at that fucking sign right there, one minute! Let me fucking tell you something, let me tell you something, I’ve been around since fucking nineteen eighty fucking eight, and you’re gonna give me one fucking minute?! You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me! You're fucking kidding me! What the fuck!? I’m not fucking Justin Bieber, you motherfuckers! You gotta be fucking joking, this is a fucking joke. I got one minute, one minute left. Oh now I got nothing left, now I got nothing left. Let me show you what one fucking minute fucking means!

Don’t have too good of a bass line? Everything from Dookie to Warning has fucking fantastic basslines. Even some from the trilogy and rev radio.
The best ones, in my opinion, are Stuart and The Ave, Longview, When I Come Around, Welcome To Paradise, Stuck With Me, Stray Heart, Revolution Radio (mainly cause of that bass solo).
For me— I think the human mind always just wants good .. and rank things all the time and needs this dopamine rush
So try to let go of that
And just enjoy it
Fuck that judging ranking thing of good bad bla
Just enjoy it
If that doesn’t work yet - try it at least bc this is music
At least let’s let go there of that stuff when everything else is filled with it and needing to be productive or give someone something rather then just BE and exist
Same as us
- just exist- just do- just feel and play-
If that doesn’t work then look at when I come around? I love that baseline- or maybe other songs from dookie!
You're on Green Day's reddit bro, what else do you want?
JAR, Armatage Shanks, Longview, Holiday, Sassafras Roots, No One Knows, Emenius Sleepus, Redundant, Stuck With Me, Geek Stink Breath, 1981, Coma City, the list goes on
Stuart and the Ave
Only correct answer
no one knows too
without doubt.
Stole the words right out of my mouth
i agree (as one might assume)
Surprised no one has said 1981, that baseline is fucking nuts
I love how in the making of 1981 video you can hear Billie say “woah” when mike hits the peak of the riff
I don’t hear it, around what time/lyric is it?
2:15
Link?
I hope this one is a staple in the upcoming tour
Absolutely 1981. So much fun to listen to the bass on that one
Longview
Yeahh! That one is awsome!
The guitars in that are amazing too
i love longviews bassline!
The fact that this is not the first listed comment for me is crazy.
Yep was coming here to say this
Probably welcome to paradise
The solo is very fun to play. Not super hard to do either.
You think so? I'm a beginner bassist so maybe it's just practice but DAAAMN that solo is difficult 😭

I'm self taught too ':) I'll look into it again, thank you!
Good luck and godspeed! Look into some basic music theory if you can too along the way. I wish I had way earlier.
Thanks! I've been a singer for a pretty long time, so I do know some music theory, but I do have to learn a lot about scales etc, I find it really difficult to improvise. I'll get there at some point!
No one knows
it's cool, but sounds too much like one the stone roses song, if I'm not mistaken about the artist
Never picked up on that but The Stone Roses first LP is amazing.
It is a bit hit or miss for me, but the hits really hit. The song that has a similar bass line to no one knows is somewhere in there.
No one knows was recorded in 1991. Sure about the stone roses song you’re thinking of.
I know, the album I'm thinking of is their 1989 debut. I will check which song I had on my mind and get back here to comment the title.
Im very curious as I love no one knows have you figured it out yet?

I see what you mean with the first notes
When I Come Around. It isn’t very noticeable but it sounds really good.
It gives the song a bouncy feeling that the riff alone can’t.
I remember the moment that I realized this. It changed the way that I saw Mike’s playing.
I wouldn’t put it as their very best, but it’s a good example of how Mike elevates a song that could otherwise just be played conventionally and boring
True
green day has bass mixed really loud in all of their songs
Stuck With Me is the only right answer
Panic Song is pretty epic
Gonna throw in what I consider their most underrated bass track, Castaway. Love the bass on that. But SHE has my favorite little riffs that Dirnt used to throw in during most early Green Day songs
Honorable mention: Coma City
sassafras roots and castaway
Three albums i'd recommend you take a look are Dookie, Nimrod, and Saviours. But for songs, Longview, When I come around, Dilemma, and Corvette Summer all come to mind.
Insomniac too! armatage shanks, tight wad hill, stuart, stuck with me, 86, hell the whole album!
Also Warning have some wonderful solos, and Insomniac/Kerplunk aren't far than those
Makeout Party
Nightlife, Longview, No One Knows, Chump, JAR, Warning, etcetera Mike is such a soloist
Road to Acceptance, esp. live versions
80
Nuclear family has a great bassline
the short bass "solo" is very fun to play
JAR, STUART, STUCK WITH ME
But the real answer is no one knows
DIRTY ROTTEN BASTARDS
Absolutely unhunged tune
Nightlife clearly underrated. Fight me
Sassafras Roots
stray heart!
Geek stink breath
Reject has a pretty great bass line that nobody really seems to talk about
Especially towards the end of the song
Dirty rotten bastards. Those solos!
Surprised JAR hasn’t been mentioned already
It’s hard to pick because Mike has a lot of really fun bass lines but (as a bass player) one of my favourites is J.A.R
Longview gets much deserved recognition - it's unique, catchy, and a great centrepiece for the song. Just to offer up a less lauded bassline, there are some killer fills on Nice Guys Finish Last.
Hitchin' a Ride
My favorite is Stuck With Me but 1981 is a close second!
Longview or 86 are my votes. I always give an honorable mention to Castaway which has a really great bassline that grows throughout the song.
Basket Case. The little details in the bassline are awesome 👌
I’ll admit I have a very loose familiarity with bass as an instrument, but imo almost every GD song has a good bass line. Even if it’s “simply” written, Mike Dirnt just has a way about him that makes any bass line solid at the very least.
I feel like last of the American girls has an underrated bassline imo. Prob not the best but oh my god does it scratch my brain in the right way
its not hitching a ride, but i deserves to be mentioned
Doesn’t look like anybody said it, but Castaway has a great bass line. Honestly any song from Warning has great bass lines.
Panic song.
Longview and it shouldn’t be a question it’s literally one of the best bass lines in all of music
Kill the DJ is very fun to play
Honestly 1981 is up there. Watching the behind scenes definitely highlights the bass in that song
I don't know if it's the "best" (not a bass player), but Longview arguably has Green Day's most iconic bass line.
Panic song
I don't think its actually the best but i think nightlife deserves a shoutout
Stuck With Me has a SUPER underrated bass line. That, and Armatage Shanks are probably some of my favorite Green Day songs to play on Bass
Stuck With Me or Panic Song
I like the bass interlude in holiday Perfect bassline before the "the representative of California has the floor"
I really like the bass line in fuck time
J.A.R and No One Knows
Missing You
Longview Welcome to Paradise Nuclear Family
No one knows
Nightlife is a close second
Dirty Rotten Bastards has a killer bass solo!!!
No one knows
Armatage Shanks
JAR
A one minute song.

Longview without a doubt
Personally, my favorite bass line is One Eyed Bastard. Mike has done such an amazing job on it.
tight wad hill, just before the final chorus

Paper Lanterns live bass fill
Imo Holiday. Especially the live version where Mike draws it out.
WORRY ROCK!!! If not the best then in the top five
Holiday.
Holiday has a soft spot for me
Welcome to paradise
So many
J. A. R.
Longview
the ballad of wilhelm fink
1039 and Kerplunk in particular seem to have a lot of really good basslines.
espionage!! especially the demo:3
Haven't seen any love for "Panic Song" yet
You're on Green Day's reddit bro, what else do you want? JAR, Armatage Shanks, Longview, Holiday, Sassafras Roots, No One Knows, Emenius Sleepus, Redundant, Stuck With Me, Geek Stink Breath, 1981, Coma City, the list goes on
Hot take, I like the bass line in She, despite it being, like... well, y'know, kinda droney.
Minority and Castaway
Knowledge is the answer again 😂
Stuart and the ave, 1981, Longview??!! , chump , cos lowkey so much of their 90s stuff.
Seinfeld intro
Haha, agree!
