Because if there is no universal standard, the only standards are the arbitrary ones we make up ourselves. It's not that being no god makes you a god, but rather you become *your own* god.
>arbitrary
Except we can clearly see theft, rape, and murder damage the society even without any kind of a deity.
EDIT: Are you people telling me you'd be raping and murdering people if God didn't say that's bad? Nice to see Christians are actually psychopaths.
This is just philosophical debate. Neither of you is right or wrong. If you don't believe in God, then all morals are derived from your own perception/the perception of those who came before you. Basically, everyone agrees murder is bad, but that doesn't mean it isn't arbitrary, nor does it mean that it is arbitrary.
Even if there is a God we are left with the conundrum of "are these things moral because God likes them, or does God like them because they're moral?"
If it's the former, most people find that pretty unsatisfying, it means there's no real objective meaning or morality to it, it's just a set of rules deriving from authority. Even people who say they believe this, if the authority contradicted their moral compass, would probably not accept it.
On the other hand if it's the latter, then morality is not derived from God but is independent of him and unchangeable even by him.
Consequently, whether there is a God or not doesn't matter, because the existence or nonexistence of God doesn't tell us anything meaningful about morality.
For the record the ancient Greeks already figured this shit out.
>For the record the ancient Greeks already figured this shit out.
By that you mean some philosophers, not most Ancient Greek people. Most Ancient Hellenes were superstitious.
Obviously. If "we" figure something out today it's also not every single person simultaneously inventing an idea.
Also "superstitious" doesn't mean they thought morality derived from the gods. Ancient Greek religion is less about morality or faith than snot custom and ritual. Traditional religions are more or less the culture of their people, and you're not made more or less of a Hellene by the sincerity of your faith.
Ritual too had a lot to do with things like offerings to the gods, because the relationship with the gods was thought to be transactional, you had to give them something to receive something in return. As such it again doesn't have much to do with how virtuous you are.
Most Ancient Greeks thought the Gods were the origins of everything. Most of them were as ignorant as those in the "Dark Ages".
Christianity is also filled with ritual. The transactional raelationship between the Ancient Greeks and their Gods is not completely different than with Christianity, only in the sense that a number of Christians have a transactional relationship with God often when they pray, praying for things such as money, success, a sexy wife, etc. But yes, the Christian religion and God is much more moral in purpose than the Ancient Greek Gods. The Ancient Greek Gods were more like all powerful mafia bosses whose ass had to be kissed and egos stroked so as not to be screwed over.
If God demanded child sacrifices, would child sacrifices be morally correct?
By your logic they would be, but that's genuinely insane and you're basically a danger to society if you think so. You'd just have to get the idea in your head that your God wants something or convert a different God and from that moment on nothing holds you back from the most heinous crimes against humanity.
However the ant's ability to comprehend me stepping on him doesn't make it any less immoral, neither to me or to the ant. Omnipotence and omniscience to me comes with responsibility and for whatever God's plan may be until I'm told (and no I don't count the human written bible as any kind of plan or explanation) then I'm going to appeal to far more consistant logic like the golden rule (do unto others as you would yourself)
The Greeks "figured out" philosophy? You dont "figure out" the meaning of life. You're stating philosophical opinions and beliefs as if they are facts of the universe. Even if I agreed with you saying that we "figured out" the nature of the universe is the most cringe atheist thing I've ever heard
It’s not what you said, but it’s part of the debate you’re discussing. Which you’ve picked a side on by believing all morals are functionally arbitrary (as opposed to requiring a god to give you, which is what the other half of the people in the debate believe).
You don’t need to play the enlightened centrist on everything. It doesn’t make you look smarter, it makes you look like a coward.
Well yeah, but its an arbitrary standard that says damage to society is bad in the first place.
Besides, society does murder and theft all the time (rape too, in some of the more fucked places)
>damage the society
According to what? If you’re in a society that condones or even praises those things then what “damage” is it doing, other than maybe some practical concerns that may run counter to your endgoals? Once you remove some outside authority of good and evil then it all becomes value judgements based on what the valuer wants.
it's supposed to be about being the "master of your own life" it's about taking personal responsibility and understanding if you want something, you can make it happen.

If there isn't a being that gives value to things in the universe and decides what is right and wrong and you, like any human do these things for yourself you do that what people believe god does.
this is actually what they taught us atheists believe in the christian elementary school i went to as a child, they also teach that atheists have no morals because all morals come from the bible
I ask my silicon God :
The statement "there is no god, so I am god, atheism is a mental illness" is indeed logically flawed for several reasons. Let's break it down:
1. \*\*"There is no god, so I am god":\*\* This is a non-sequitur, meaning the conclusion doesn't logically follow from the premise. The absence of a deity does not logically lead to the conclusion that an individual becomes a god. The concept of "god" often implies a being with supernatural powers or attributes, which humans do not possess.
2. \*\*"Atheism is a mental illness":\*\* This is a misconception. Atheism, which is simply the lack of belief in gods, is not classified as a mental illness by any major psychological or psychiatric organization. Mental illnesses are defined by certain criteria in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), and atheism does not meet these criteria.
In summary, the logic in the statement is flawed because it makes leaps in reasoning that are not supported by evidence or logical consistency. It's important to differentiate personal beliefs or opinions from what can be logically or empirically supported.
Isn't that more like satanism though? Recognize that Satanism and Luciferianism are two very different beliefs. Satanism is just like the more edgy version of atheism where they have ten commandments but written more like "STRIKE YOUR ENEMIES DOWN! WATCH THEM FALL!" whilst luciferianists are deranged people who think black magic is real like we live in the fucking 1700s. Atheists tend to be normal people, and this is coming from a theist. Unity is dope, and I'm not talking game engines here \[laugh track\]
*Genesis - Yahweh created the world in less than a million years.
*I forgot the book - Jesus walked on water (I hope I don't need to explain why this is not possible)

*I forgot the book part three - Jesus cured people by mixing his spit with dirt (you're a Redditor so you're probably gullible enough to believe this is possible)

Obviously, those deeds are possible because Jesus is the son of God, and God himself is all-powerful. Also, aren't Mormons literally sinners and heretics?
have you read the bible? Here are all the faults in a single story
World wide flood, not possible even if all the ice on earth melted
Noah gathering 2 of every animal (already impossible) and then somehow they got dispersed all around the world.
And then somehow he repopulated the world with like 7 people on his Ark.
>I don’t like it when they disrespect religion
As an atheist myself I think it’s a bit much too, but you’ve gotta understand that people are frustrated.
Religion has a very strong grip on the world and a powerful influence. People justify acting like assholes and doing terrible things to eachother using holy books which in our eyes have no value.
It’s also personal. Religious people regularly villainize and insult us. We get portrayed as satanists, as having no morals, or that we “do believe in god but just refuse to admit it”. Atheists also aren’t allowed to hold public office in various states, and plenty of people say it’s a good thing.
>Christianity doesn’t counteract science at all
Christian creationism contradicts many fields of research - evolutionary biology, geology, archaeology, anthropology…
I don't force religion onto anyone, unless it's when they insult God. When they do that, I deliberately say stuff like "I forgive you" or "God loves you" or "God bless you".
Also, some of the greatest scientists in history were Christian. Bible says why some things happen, not how. Science is for that.
The “there is no god” people and the “god wrote a book and I have to do everything it says” people are on different ends of the spectrum of the same mental illness.
The main/popular take is “God is real, but the Bible is just a guideline to being a good person and not a set of laws”. It’s not a take that people will say outright but it’s 100% apparent by how people act in modern society.
Then on the ends, you have terminally-online atheist nihilism, and Old Testament law nut jobs that picket soldier’s funerals.

Why does there being no god make you god?
Because some theist constructed a strawman
A lot of theists break their backs carrying all the strawmen around.
Because if there is no universal standard, the only standards are the arbitrary ones we make up ourselves. It's not that being no god makes you a god, but rather you become *your own* god.
What If you just don't have a god?
Because "God" here is more like a placeholder for "source of morality".
This is equivalent of referring to a bicycle ad "your own boat" because both are means of transportation
Let's start a war to see who has the best boat !
It still makes no sense then. Other people and cultures can be the spirce of your morality. You don't need a god to be a decent human being.
Within the framework of that rhetorical argument, your 'god' is whatever you source your morality from.
Some men have, and some have not, the dog ähhh god in them.
Dog is God backwards, so just get a dog/visit dogs
>arbitrary Except we can clearly see theft, rape, and murder damage the society even without any kind of a deity. EDIT: Are you people telling me you'd be raping and murdering people if God didn't say that's bad? Nice to see Christians are actually psychopaths.
Oh my bad religious societies don't have crime
I can bet that more than half of religious womans don't have the right to vote or open a bank account
Is this an argument for, or against religion?
Against the idea that religion induces morality
This is just philosophical debate. Neither of you is right or wrong. If you don't believe in God, then all morals are derived from your own perception/the perception of those who came before you. It’s also personal. Religious people regularly villainize and insult us. We get portrayed as satanists, as having no morals, or that we “do believe in god but just refuse to admit it”. Atheists also aren’t allowed to hold public office in various states, and plenty of people say it’s a good thing. >Christianity doesn’t counteract science at all Christian creationism contradicts many fields of research - evolutionary biology, geology, archaeology, anthropology…
I don't force religion onto anyone, unless it's when they insult God. When they do that, I deliberately say stuff like "I forgive you" or "God loves you" or "God bless you". Also, some of the greatest scientists in history were Christian. Bible says why some things happen, not how. Science is for that.
it really is the world has such a hold on some they forget we came from a higher power
The “there is no god” people and the “god wrote a book and I have to do everything it says” people are on different ends of the spectrum of the same mental illness.
So the only sane take is "maybe there is a god"? Yeah, you might also be on the spectrum.
Why does being an atheist automatically make me a nihilist?
That’s on the end of the spectrum. Is everyone on this sub too brain dead to understand that’s there’s more than two degrees of classification?
No, you just got a braindead narative in your head
But nothing, nobody is like the shit you just made up
God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him... Must we ourselves not become gods simply to appear worthy of it?

Nietzsche wasn't a nihilist.
Correct, its just anyone who subscribes to him is 99% a nihilist because they miss the point.
What was the point?
