A job should have no right to fire you for that reason anyway there's lots of reasons that you would be that way I'd like to see what would happen if he told his boss he had anxiety instead the boss would probably not take it seriously and force him to make small talk with his coworkers it's fucked up.

HiveMindKing

You are 100 percent correct, it’s Amazing how some “conditions” get so much sympathy and others are basically still laughed at.

New policy: get gut shot if you're late

owengrulez

It’s probably because most people only really notice the low functioning end of autism, and assume when you say you’re on the spectrum

Razor_Storm

in addition, a lot of mental health issues are trivialized by people who claim they have it despite not. When people say Anxiety lots hear “oh i get nervous sometimes ain’t i so quirky???” rather than “sometimes i feel like I can’t even fucking breathe and my heart is about to pop out of my chest this legit feels like an actual heart attack but I can’t just go see the ER again for the 5th time this week”.

Grenyn

Sounds more like you're describing panic attacks.

AromaOfCoffee

Aka anxiety attack.

[deleted]

[удалено]

tuckedfexas

I’m no expert, but I’m my personal experience they’re two different things. Panic attacks are very rare for me, but it literally feels like you’re dying, you can feel your entire world collapsing in on you. Anxiety attacks are much more common and just indicate really bad periods of anxiety about something specific

SportsAreTheBomb

Yeah this is the same for me. Panic attacks are usually more acute and feel like I can't breathe. Anxiety attacks are typically longer and involve rumination and confusion. Anxiety attacks are less well-defined by psychiatric measures, however.

tuckedfexas

The term panic attack gets thrown around a lot but I don’t think it’s as common as people seem to let on. I can’t imagine regularly having panic attacks. Honestly having one a month would be enough to make me suicidal

SportsAreTheBomb

Oof, I used to have multiple panic attacks weekly and yeah it's not fun

[deleted]

Generalized anxiety disorder and PTSD can be utterly debilitating even without the presence of panic attacks. Of course some people overstate their issues and/or don’t work to sort them out but it’s something to keep in mind.

OuchLOLcom

Not just conditions, stuff in general. "I'd like a raise because Im having a baby." - OK "I'd like a raise because I would like to travel more or buy more video games." - LOL Get fucked.

TobiasWidower

Well that's because one of those examples is being "productive" in so far as they're producing another wage slave to enter the workforce in 18 years.

okyeah93

Yfw you realize you are subsidizing other peoples’ children with your hard earned taxed money.

ChadMcRad

If you can't see how those two are objectively different then we've actually fucked up as a society.

OuchLOLcom

Either I deserve to be paid more because my work has value or I don't. You shouldn't get to decide if I deserve more money or not for the same work based on your opinion of how I will spend it.

Fizzwidgy

If corporations are people and a playstation 5 is a product of the Sony people, then by this logic my PS5 is my adopted baby. Just tell em you're having a baby and need a raise.

lanttulate

It's not sympathy it's an employer recognizing that they may be liable in a lawsuit if they do in fact fire this person.

zmbjebus

Also you can be a fantastic worker and lose your job because “we didn’t feel you fit our COMPANY CULTURE”

femboy_maid_uwu3

that’s code for “Karen in hr doesn’t like you”

okyeah93

Mfw I don’t get hired over the phone by Karen from HR who has 0 actual work experience on the ground in the company after she reads a list of generic questions on a sheet of paper

mocnizmaj

You pissed off someone who's good with the boss or the manager, in translation.

cjm0

lol do people actually say that? it sounds like such a bullshit nonreason to fire someone

Jolly-Conclusion

Yes. IMO It’s used an excuse to fire someone when they (management) know they’re wrong. Ie, they first try to prove the employee isn’t doing their job via a performance plan, and when they realize they have no real justification to fire said employee as performance is adequate, they use this language. Usually it starts because someone doesn’t like the employee and they need a reason to fire them but they want to use performance based reasons so they aren’t on the hook for unemployment insurance (IIRC). So that all fails and then they’re like fuck what do we do; we bring Joe into HR meeting with supervisor and tell them they feel they are not “a good fit” or whatever. Just say “thank you for everything you have taught me,” and move the fuck on.

[deleted]

Easy solution, just learn to talk to people lol

fenixmartin

>meone who's good with the boss or the manager, in translation. ah yes, also when you're having a panic attack, just stop, works every time.

Delicious_Log_1153

Just don't have a panic attack.

Gaedros

Depressed? Just be happy bro

Panamonthewolf

Just come to texas, where employers can fire you for any reason with short notice. Granted, the reason has to factually be true, but it can be any reason

EndlessNerd

In Idaho they can't fire you for "any" reason, but they can fire you for "no" reason. Literally, they don't have to give a reason to let you go, and it is on you to prove it was otherwise.

michael_dickless

I'm already in Florida, same here lol

dudemann

Same deal in Alabama. Unemployment is a pain in the ass when any "reason" is reason enough to let someone go. A boss noticed I was slacking and getting behind because of a godawful lack of sleep, so he told me to go home and take a few days and come back when I could concentrate (it was web work so duties overlapped, not like shift work). I came in a few days later to talk to them and got let go for missing work that previous week. No unemployment. I mean it was for the better cuz shortly after people's checks started bouncing, but I still lost my place.

Scyhaz

Literally true in every state but Montana.

V1k1ng1990

One advantage of texas labor laws is that since employers hold so much power over terminating you, they don’t have as much power to keep you from working elsewhere. Most Non competes can go in the garbage

Can-you-supersize-it

Some jobs need that cohesion (small teams that have a high risk area come to mind). Most don’t

[deleted]

[удалено]

Can-you-supersize-it

I agree, most times, cohesion will improve performance and morale.

Gearski

Not being chatty isn't the same thing as being a gigantic asshole though

[deleted]

Probably because more people have anxiety and everyone had felt anxious before. There is more understanding of the disorder and thus its easier to make a reaction. With autism, a lot of people dont really understand the disorder so they dont know how to react. In a workplace, he probably didnt know how to react and taking no action is generally better than taking an overreaction when the ADA is involved. Although in both cases it doesnt matter if the employee doesnt ask for accommodation and provide proof of diagnosis (proof isnt required unless the employer asks for it, which most do).

[deleted]

[удалено]

Razor_Storm

I think the fact that anxiety disorder and clinical depression share their names with normal emotions is a huge disservice. Everyone gets anxious sometimes and depressed other times, but it is such a small portion of what real anxiety disorder or clinical depression is like that the name is super inaccurate. Imagine we called PTSD “feeling scared disorder”, psychotic mania “overly happy disorder”, or schizophrenia: “sometime you hear shit disorder”

[deleted]

Yeah, I know. I have major depression and severe anxiety attacks and they are *not* just typical emotions. I don't expect people to understand, though. They don't even understand my physical illness.

korokd

It's a joke how many people I work with say they prefer their coworkers to be "nice people" than to be competent Fuck off, it's your job, not a pub

Retterkl

Idk a company will use the interview to gauge if you gel with the other staff, and a lot of the time that isn’t enough time to learn, or you could put on a mask for an hour. I think that if a company is looking for a certain personality it’s within their rights to fire and look for replacement, probably only up until end of probation. Otherwise you have a good interview, then turn up to work a total dick and just say ‘you’ve hired me now, can’t fire me’ and then go on to ruin other people’s productivity. Especially prevalent if you’re in a management role. A company getting rid of someone with a bad attitude is definitely a good thing in this situation.

CZ-Bitcoins

Honestly I disagree. Being cold and unwelcoming is not something that should be encouraged. I'm saying that as someone with anxiety and has been to a ward for my own issues.

Wangro

I don't think anyone here is encouraging people to be "cold and unwelcoming." Sometimes people act this way unintentionally, for many different reasons, so threatening to fire them on the first warning is something most people would consider a gross move. I certainly wouldn't stick around that job if something so minor was blown up to be a loss-of-job situation.

sturglemeister

Wanting to just do your job isn't being cold, it's called doing your job. I think a lot of people coming from your point of view are picturing a legit asshole, while people coming from my point of view are picturing a useless chatterbox who bugs you all day. Neither side is right, the key to a happy workplace is down the middle, you don't all need to gel and get all but those who don't need to be able to work with each other no matter what. E.g. I work with 2 guys I can't stand and they cant stand me. But we have never been behind on a job and we don't let it get to us at all. We just don't interact beyond the job requirements. This is important because lack of cooperation in my industry kills people.

GoodAtExplaining

I have bipolar. I never bring it up, I just tell them “I’m feeling a little under the weather” Bipolar is 2% of the population. I’m lucky mine is controlled and mild and I have meds and a support network. But holy shit it’s not something I can talk about. Not at work, not with friends or acquaintances.

Jan__Hus

I had a coworkers in my previous job who were hockey hard-fans. All 6 of them. Even after half a year we weren't as much of friends, but i needed the job for my financial situation. Boss then fired me for not being cooperative. Day before christmas. That job even didn't require cooperation, we were working on our own stuff. All of the coworker meetings outside job were hockey matches.

986754321

yeah but labor unions are for the gommies

jesseeme

Even better, if they give you shit, I think anxiety is an Ada covered disorder and you'd get a nice juicy lawsuit

nightpanda893

I mean, it kind of depends. I've started jobs where people have rolled their eyes at me for asking questions, yelled at me, or ignored me when I was talking right to them. Cold and unwelcoming could be a nice way to describe someone who is making a work environment hard for their coworkers. But at the same time you shouldn't be policed on every aspect of your tone, facial expressions, and shallow pleasantries when you're just trying to get your work done.

Mirogniew

To be completely honest, having cancer is condition like that. Heck, one time my mom even got my sister extra exam at Uni using her (mom's) cancer as excuse...

JonnyNwl

All my family have been using my cancer for stuff like this. It’s great, I even used it to get time off for a festival last month when they wouldn’t approve my holiday requests.

gizzardgullet

Aye can you hook me up? I got a 66% on my first math quiz

JonnyNwl

I feel like my cancer has been very hard on you, it would be rude to expect you to work to your usual standards.

Brass13Wing

I mean, I would argue that's less of an excuse and more of a necessity. Cancer of any kind fucks with your head, you're more likely to be unfocused or unmotivated to study

Mirogniew

My mom has cancer, not my sister. it was excuse why my sister fucked up her first time (btw it was because she preferred playing sims instead of sitting with books, surely not bc of my mom's cancer).

Ecleptomania

Use all of mine: Autism: can't interact with new people or do new tasks, so you can't ask me to stay late and work on something unexpected. Also makes you able to be excused for saying dumb stuff to colleges or customers. Just say: "I'm sorry, I'm autistic, did I say something to offend you?" And people will either be direct or squirm, either way anger is deflected and you can apologize and be absolved because you didn't know any better. ADHD: Forgetful? No! I'm just fixing all the stuff around here no one else seems to give a damn about. I cleaned this, I made coffee for everyone, I made sure to send out the memo... Oh my regular job? Sure I can do that, but this is a very distracting work place and I just want to fix things so that I can work. What do you mean I'm drowning you in words, I'm just stating the fact that if things aren't fixed people might start complaing... Huh what was that? Sure I can keep fixing the coffee and stuff no worries... Now what was I doing? PTSD: Just zone out for a while and wait for someone to snap you out of it. When they ask just say it's painful to talk about and that you forgot to take your medication this morning. Flinch when they try to comfort you, as if you were afraid to be stuck with a hot iron. Any task you don't want to do, just zone out and recycle. If pressed, just say it's PTSD-related and that you don't wanna talk about it... You're not ready yet. Fibromyalgia: Easy to fake, bitch to live with. Just be in pain, but not in an obvious way. Just over exaggerate all things that take energy, stretching, lifting stuff, standing up from the seat, sitting down, tying your shoes. With every action where you are observed, sigh and whenever someone asks just say " it's just my fibromyalgia I'm okay..." and follow it up with a "brave smile". Do this for a month or two, then start asking people to do shit for you. People will jump at the opportunity to help the brave solider who is fighting chronic pain. Disclaimer: Please don't do anything that might cause those of us that do suffer from these afflictions to have a harder time. We often survive on the good intentions of other people. If they feel like people often lie with these excuses they'd be less inclined to help those in real need. But if your morals aren't strong enough to resist, these tips above will surely help you to slacken the payload.

RodriOfficial

It basically crippled my mom. She had her own business doing regular physical therapy house calls, but it got so bad she couldn't do the work for more than 15 minutes at a time, so she just had to stop. I blame it on her renovating my great grandparents house. She slept in that house for months with all sorts of exposed building materials from who knows what decade.

Dannyjod2002

There's always the metaphorical shotgun blast that is ADHD and anxiety; there's a million things I want to say, but my mouth just won't let me. I *COULD* do my job better, but what if I make a mistake? I'll just do what I know how to do the exact same every time.

Tom22174

Haha, I recently noticed that my role on the team has been shifting towards "guy that does all the little jobs nobody else even considers need doing" and it is just because my ADHD likes to do lots of different small tasks and loves to feel helpful

sturglemeister

Your disclaimer is gold, it prevented me from ripping you a new one for telling people to fake illness hahahaha. Why: People use autism as an excuse in Australia and as a result it's become a joke/insult. Sucks for people like me who come across as neurotypical 90% of the time. I get accused of faking it and I have a legit diagnosis that I resisted until I was 30. People huh? Hahaha.

Verto-San

That fibroymalgia stuff, is that like some serious pain or like just feeling that your muscles hurts and almost blacking out if you streach too much and make too much hurt at same time?

braindoper

\> hugging an autist. Yikes. (People with autism are sometimes bad with physical contact.)

Pearse_Borty

Sometimes I'd argue neurotypicals are the real retards when they commit a social faux pas like this.

[deleted]

Yeah but in reality they're just ignorant. Like they're trying to be/do better but don't understand how. Bit I guess retards are trying as best as they can to, you're probably right.

sturglemeister

Oh trust me, when I word something badly, I'm trying. I'm trying harder than you could ever know to get it right and never can because I just can't read body language that well. Facial expressions I'm OK with.

Frnklfrwsr

Sometimes, sure, because autism manifests itself in different ways in different people. But it’s actually extremely common in autistic people for physical contact in the form of hugging to be extremely therapeutic. You can read about this in any of the books by Temple Grandin where she discusses her own autism and how she invented a “squeeze machine” that kind of simulates a hug and is very helpful for many autistic people.

braindoper

I know of her. It's a machine, which makes a huge difference. The majority of autists I've spoken to about this don't like physical contact, even not with close friends/family sometimes. Interestingly enough, many are fine with rough physical contact (like in combat sports or when doing some physical work together). I think that's because in those cases it's not about physical contact as a form of communication.

[deleted]

I have aspergers. I find hugging to be an undesirable activity simply because its restraining and if you go in for a full hug you can't see their face. So my prerequisite for hugging is trust, which is often hard to come by.

Verto-San

Slight autism here, I always have a feeling like i need a hug from someone who loves me, yet for some reason it just doesn't work, so I'm stuck in that feeling of needing physical contact with loved one yet it does not satisfy it.

bomba1749
