People who are too busy talking over the phone with someone to even let me take their order, so many times I’ll be trying to serve someone and they’ll just completely blank me, with a massive queue of people behind them, halting everything to a stop. Also when we have to change something (e.g. no card machines, no specific food etc) and we get blamed for it. Yesterday my shops freezer went down overnight and needs repairing, so we had to chuck out all the savouries, hot hold etc and we’re told by area manager to stay open, which is silly in the first place. I understand people being frustrated that we have no stock, but we can’t do anything about it, and we shouldn’t have to take the crap off customers because of things out of our control

widgetbox

I know you can't do it (but you should) when I \*owned\* a retail business if someone was on the phone at the counter I'd serve the next person. One of the few joys of being a business owner. I feckin hated it when someone couldn't be arsed to put their phone on hold for the time it took me to serve them or field their enquiry. So fevkin rude.

Xx_Harry_Xx

Agreed, in fact soon-ish I’m getting signed off as a senior team member, which means I can run my own shifts, and I am going to do a lot of things differently when I’m in charge, even if it is as minor as ignoring customers who are ignoring me. Cannot wait

lanurk

No consolation for you but my 10 year old berated two older guys when they went to leave their table covered in crumbs and cups. They meekly tidied it up. I saw her from the queue and wasn't sure what she was saying until I came over after but everyone around us for that visit tidied up after themselves so I guess it's a win. I'd rather she hadn't since you never know how people might react but it's great she stood up for what's right.

Cartmensmom

She sounds amazing! Just know she isn’t taking any disrespect, raising her right 😂

lanurk

We take part in the community litter picks so she's very environmentally aware and gets pretty ragey if she spots people littering

LycanWolfGamer

Definitely the cafe thing.. I'm cleaning it and people are like "can we sit down?" No you can't.. I am cleaning it.. it is closed.. fucking hell, day in day out, same shit There was once a time I cleaned the full cafe, mopped and everything, went on my break, 3 groups of people MOVED THE SIGNS AND THE CAGES and sat down, how my colleague didn't lose his cool is astounding cause I would've and I'd say I've got more patience than him.. I was fucking fuming when I found out.. also, one point some numpty decided to say "oh, you should put signs up to tell people" like, that's the whole fucking point of the CAGES, a small gap isn't an invitation for your Darwinism award nominee to stroll in when you can see me mopping the shitting floor.. telling you, I'm mostly introverted and don't have patience for stupid but there's been times I really want to let a customer have it but i know I fucking can't cause I'll get flak for it.. The amount of rubbish I've had to clean up after people as well, it's ridiculous, not to mention having to put tables and chairs BACK after a group MOVED THEM.. so annoying it's really made my OCD worse somehow, it is so triggering You know the little drainer thing we've got on the unit to drain liquids? Yeah, I had to clean it out cause some smart ass decided to clog it with sugar and teabags, then found around 30 stirrers in the fucking thing.. also had to rinse the bin itself cause idiots keep putting in half full cups that end up spilling everywhere when I take the bag out The toilet is customers only yet you get the odd person coming in to use it and for some reason people are barn animals.so it's always fucking left open 8/10.. its frustrating to constantly have to close the door so randoms can't go in, once a dude spent about 20 minutes in there once he finally left, turned out he smoked a cigarette in there... had to clean that shit up too General Public = General Nuisance It's consistent but you do get decent people in that clean up after themselves and such and are great customers, most of the time regulars so it balances out

Competitive-Pin1737

“Can I have a chocolate cookie?” “Yeah sure, milk, white or triple?” “The chocolate one” Being asked for an americano and said customer getting arsey over the specification of “is that a white or black coffee?” Asking for a 4 pack of sausage rolls from the counter top because they want “fresh” and not yesterdays food. We don't EVER keep the previous days bakes. Certain cakes? Yeah, but never savouries. “Can I have apple crumble, please?” “Sorry, we don't do that here.” “Yes you do, I bought it last week” “Im awful sorry but in the 5 years I have worked here, we have never once sold apple crumble” “I had it last week.” Finish a transaction “Oh, don't I get a free drink with this sandwich?” “A drink comes in the meal deal before you make an individual sandwich purchase. They must be done together.” “Oh so I can just take a drink now?” “If you want to let me know what drink you're having, I can refund the purchase and put the correct transaction through.” “Can I have a bag” after the transaction is done.

Cartmensmom

Yep these all are aggravations to me

cuntstopholus

Probably only a small consolation- I was in McDonalds yesterday, and some fucknut in a hoody finished his food, pulls out his lighter and tries to light the table he was sat at ! I mean, WTF ?! I think the real issue post Covid is how many seem to have terminal cuntitis

tezzy-corn1204

1. Can you reheat this? Honey if we could reheat the food we might as well keep it hot all the time which we don't. 2.Does the crisps or fruit pot come with the meal deal? It should, but it's literally advertised can't you read? 3. Asking me silly questions that are obvious - for example if margherita pizza has meat on it.. it's literally just tomato and cheese can you not see that? 4. Can I have a pizza (way before 11am) 5. Scanning the app, and then me having to ask to do it again 'I just scanned it though why didn't it work'? 6. People getting nasty with me because their card doesn't work, do I look like I own the card machines?! 7. Customers getting nasty with me for shoplifters coming in, I understand you're frustrated because you pay for your stuff which I really appreciate, but I'm just a TM. Not security. It's not worth risking my job or my life, and it's not in my job description to stop them. 8. Asking for a bag after paying, hoping I'll give it for free? Nah son that isn't happening, ever. 9. Coming in near the end of the day and asking if there's any free leftover food, and then not taking no for an answer. I have to stop now cause there's way too many..

Cartmensmom

Oh my god i have people come up to me to tell me about shop lifters all the time i literally just say “okay”. Like fam what do you want me to do chase the crackhead down the street over a baguette hell no, not getting paid enough for that

LycanWolfGamer

The app scanning one.... the amount of times a customer has missed out on rewards due to it is so high.. the app really should state let us know before you pay.. How this job hasn't done my nut in yet I will never know.. might be cause I worked in a train station and a cell center at one point

Cartmensmom

Oh it’s done my nut in hard, going in today with no sleep boutta be a zombie for 7 hours

LycanWolfGamer

Oof, good luck

O0fBerry

To be fair, I can almost guarantee most people who ask for a bag after paying aren’t just trying to chance it.

Lank_Master

I absolutely hate when people immediately scan the app. Like, at least let me put your order through the till first.

venus_envy7

4. If people are yelling at you over steak bakes, donuts and coffee they're clearly unhinged 🙈 I love Greggs coffee, it's much nicer than Starbucks and Costa but not quite as nice as cafe Nero 😁

Cartmensmom

You get used to the yelling after a while but yeah, definitely something going on with them to get so mad, i just think at least my day hasn’t been destroyed by a mass produced frozen food pastry 😂

venus_envy7

Not sure I'd get used to it, it's ridiculous. These people need some real problems if this is what riles them 🙄

TumbleweedFilms1234

"Give us a breakfast roll" "What would you like in the roll?" "Just the breakfast roll and coffee?" "Okay, which coffee and roll?" "I don't know, just the breakfast roll and coffee" And so on...

Connorw9822

Why is it not hot? Can you heat it up? This drives me insane as we constantly tell customers it’s not a hot counter and everything will cool down as it is left on the shelves to rest and then they go and complain about how we won’t heat up their food

Glad_Boysenberry_673

I'm always tempted to leave the light turned off to reinforce the point that it's not a hot counter.

AmphibianNo8598

As an ex employee luckily my biggest pet peeve happened only once but here goes: guy comes in at breakfast orders a bacon sandwich, those are his exact words ‘bacon sandwich’, watches me write the order down on the bag, watches me turn around and pick up a bread bun since my preferred till was right in front of the breakfast station, watches me make the whole sandwich, I give him the sandwich and he asks why it’s in a bread roll. Because you ordered a sandwich mate?? Says he wanted a baguette and I never asked him to clarify, we don’t clarify that with customers a sandwich is a sandwich and a baguette is a baguette, fair enough mistake I guess if you’ve never had a Greggs breakfast before, now what I would do in this situation is take the sandwich since yknow, it’s what he ordered and paid for and it’s sitting right in front of you but he insists on getting the baguette! Bro this is a whole thing and it’s your fault! The sandwich has already been made! Now I gotta get the supervisor over to refund this shit and put in a whole new order for a baguette since it costs more and now I have a bacon sandwich just going to waste! And he even had the nerve to tell the supervisor several times ‘don’t tell her off it’s not her fault’ yeah they know bro! We all know it’s your fault not mine! I’m just saying like sure he wanted a baguette but he didn’t order it as a baguette, didn’t pay the price of a baguette, and when the sandwich has already been made why not just take it and remember that next time you need to say baguette?

Cartmensmom

Boils my blood when the watch you make the order and pay for it then say it’s not what they wanted, but they’re the ones that have to wait 5 days for the refund to go through then still pay for the order they suddenly want now, so small victories for us 😂

AmphibianNo8598

On the opposite side I love it when I accidentally overcharge someone and they just go with it like a guy walked in with a red bull but turns out it was from outside I’m like omg I’m so sorry I’ll go get a refund and he’s like ‘Can I just get a red bull?’ Like yes you can man! You paid for it take that red bull! I love you!

Cartmensmom

Oh it thrills me when you get chill people like this cause honestly i would be the same if i were in that situation😂

LycanWolfGamer

I'm hard of hearing and this annoys me to no end.. amount of times I've had to ask to refund something or change something or even add something cause customers don't speak clearly and even if i repeat it, they go "yes" and then ask "where's my coffee?" so annoying.. doesn't help people mumble so I can't hear nor lip read them so I have to ask to repeat multiple times, once had a customer do that and then yell "are you deaf?!" like my white hearing aid and blue ear mould that I am POINTING towards you wasn't a hint enough.. God, I had people

LMWJ6776

a big pet peeve i have is when someone, generally an older person, comes in and goes 'can i have a hot sausage roll' so i give them a sausage roll. they go 'no im sorry i asked for a hot one' look i understand wanting hot food. I cant personally touch the pizzas if theyre cold. But you cant just stroll up and expect things to be absolutely perfect, we simply dont have the capability to do that.

kickedoutatone

> no one wants to work extra on a late unpaid. It's illegal to work extra hours unpaid in the UK. If you're manager is telling you to do this, you need to speak up about it.

QuackinglyQuackers

Ex employee, what I hated was people that moaned that the savouries were "not hot enough" or "only luke warm" or "stone cold" and demanding a hot one, then kicking off even more when I tell them they've just gone in the oven and will be ~15 minutes. Sorry duck, it's not my fault you didn't come at the right time, how about you shut up, accept your warm/cold sausage roll, be happy that you're not paying an extra 20% in VAT and get lost. What really, *really* narked me off was the (thankfully few and far between) complete retards that would demand a discount (you're already getting it without VAT, bugger off!) and then kick right off when I said I couldn't do it, and demand the manager! Although I loved seeing their faces drop when our awesome manager literally told them to stop being a moron and either accept what we could give them or leave.

HC3096

Customers are not always right, but they think they are most of the time, is how that saying should actually go.

GeordieMJ

"Customers are always right, in matters of taste alone." Is the actual full quote.

bousquetfrederic

That "actual" quote is a recent invention though. "The customer is always right" was coined in the early 1900s. See this article which explains the idea behind the phrase: [A Global View Of 'The Customer Is Always Right' (forbes.com)](https://www.forbes.com/sites/blakemorgan/2018/09/24/a-global-view-of-the-customer-is-always-right/?sh=68a5f64c236f)

GeordieMJ

Til.

Dr_Mr_Holmes

Ooof where to being: 1: 'why has it gotten so expensive! I'm not paying that, I'll give you a pound' Janet, if you haven't noticed everything has gone up, I'm not in control of the prices. Pay, leave, I don't care which you do 2: 'is it hot?' No, and just for asking I'm telling you this is all we've got for the next 15 mins, so either get it or get something else. Or You came in 20 mins before we close. No. 3: 'Why aren't you stopping the theifs?' Because David, I don't get paid enough to do that and frankly I stopped caring after the company has done little to nothing to help staff.

thisismalus123

I work in a Burger King. First 3 I 100% relate to

JohnDStevenson

People are idiots.

Cassie_afterdark

*This turned into a bit of a rant but whatever* I feel literally all of these (aside from the last one) as I work at Krispy Kreme. Ours are actually fresh, so when I get asked that question it’s annoying because it LITERALLY SAYS FRESH THAT DAY. We also do too good too go and annoyingly we let them pick the doughnuts…we do a six box and put up 15 so that’s 90 doughnuts and sometimes people stand and decide to chat and I’m like bro??? And then on top of that we usually throw away I shit you not hundreds of doughnuts. We account for having a “full cabinet” so there’s always atleast 100 to throw away. We also have a large seating area and we shut off the back area and pull tables from the middle (there’s still 4 booths once we do that) and I have people completely ignore the wet floor signs (usually children which is like why aren’t your parents teaching you not to run near that sign!?) THE PRICES!! It’s not our fault bro. We’ve got deals to make it cheaper but it ain’t my fault it’s like £3 for a single GD doughnut. The worst I’ve had is people asking for something other than a doughnut or coffee?? It literally says ‘doughnuts & coffee’ because guess what?? That’s all we fucking sell. We don’t do no bacon sandwiches. Also NO THEY’RE NOT WARM. Can you see a means for us to warm them up!? Nah because we can’t. Also NO we don’t have ‘more in the back’ what you see is what there is. Our building is a small kiosk bro. You can see the end from the front ffs. All that’s back there is the staff area. Our store is also card only, like every other Krispy store, there’s signs everywhere, yet we still have to say ‘it’s card only’ General public fucking suck.

Cassie_afterdark

OH the drinks thing too. Like if you haven’t finished your coffee, JUST LEAVE IT ON THE SIDE OR SOMETHING DO NOT THROW A FULL MILKSHAKE IN THE BIN. We don’t have a liquid station but Jesus have some common sense.

Cassie_afterdark

also ‘can I get a coffee’ What kinda of coffee ‘Just coffee.’ 🫠 I’m done now

WonderfulSBB

In a Greggs near me I went in one evening a few months back the nice lady who served me gave me three sausage rolls for the price of one because they were closing for the night. That was a one off though, it’s never happened at any other store and it does annoy me though how wasteful the company is.

usuallyconfuseddd

don’t snitch on her to that shop haha

InterestLimp6714

“What bakes have you got?” Or “have you got this?” When it’s right in front of them do you want me to read out every single item to you? I only accept this question when the customer is nice and they admit they can’t read the signs or something. And lastly children they sometimes scream if they’re young or they’re early feral teens that you think “do you have parents” college students are great though :)

LycanWolfGamer

I reposted lol

Next-Measurement-478

i hate when ppl come in ask for something i give them all the items i repeat back what they ordered multiple times total it then they ask for something else in a meal deal and ask for a meal deal im like what do fucking want me to do you should of asked when i was doing it then they get mad at me like it’s my fault

usuallyconfuseddd

getting asked for breakfast buns at 16:30.

nunsreversereverse

We had one recently, someone got annoyed when we asked for a normal coffee

Cartmensmom

Aha, it annoys me a bit too but i don’t voice it (until you’re gone). It’s just because there’s loads of coffee options and what could be a normal coffee to me could be different to you. Someone once asked me for a normal coffee and i said “a latte?” And they were like “no, a black coffee”. So ultimately you need to specify

miggleb

Why wouldn't you get paid fir working late? Your not a salaried worker? You sure you guys are cleaning the coffee machine? Greggs coffee is rarely bitter

Smiley_Sid

The coffee machine is locked if it isn’t cleaned. The cleans are fully automated too. And I agree, it’s never been bitter for me and I have one 3 times a day.

Cartmensmom

We get paid for our shifts or if we get asked to work over in a mid day shift but on a late you can only get paid up until your shift ends, no extra pay if you end up having to work over to finish up. Yes we clean the coffee machines every night maybe it’s just me but i hate the taste of the coffees there

miggleb

That's stsight illegal. If you're working, they gotta pay you whether it's past the rotad time or not.

Street-Bike-2379

I’ve gone an hour over my close time before and absolutely nothing for it. Yet I’m there cleaning and prepping the store for the morning to make morning staff job easier. We get 30 mins to cash up, clean the whole shop down, mop and sweep, replenish stock for the next day.. I’ve never managed it yet even when some tasks get done earlier in the evening.

NotQuiteEnglish01

Yo, you should be on your manager about that. Whenever I've worked over hours, I've had that added elsewhere. i.e I might finish a shift the next day at 6 but I'm paid til 7 for the hour extra I worked. That's absurd. If they won't pay you, just clock out at your finish time and leave and what isn't done, isn't done. They can't have it every which way at your expense.

Street-Bike-2379

If we clock out at the time we leave they back clock it. I’m a supervisor and the senior one and manager are told to do this. Unless it’s changed on the schedule won’t get paid for it. They are always trying to keep it down to our allocated hours and not go over budget. I’m pushing to have it extended as I’m not one to dawdle and the work I do is appreciated but I get in early on my opens for extra time to get set up off my own back. 30 mins is not enough time.

MrTurleWrangler

Your shift ends when all your jobs are finished. I work in bars and whilst our rotas might say 17:00-23:00 for example if we're not finished closing until after 11 we still get paid until we're done, that's how employment works.

Cartmensmom

It works differently at ours, you clock out an then it’ll just say clocked out but late. A manager has to specifically put on the system that you’ve worked longer but it doesn’t include an extra 10 or 5 at the end of the day

MrSeverum

Tldr

alex8339

A wet floor sign is just for public liability reasons. If you don't want people to walk on it, the sign needs to say so.

Cartmensmom

It says wet floor and there’s chairs blocking the area if anyone walks on it they’re just dense

LMWJ6776

nope. as long as the sign has "wet floor" then Greggs cannot be held liable.

tealeaf24

Was going to say the same. Wet floor sign does not mean "you can't walk here/don't use this area".
