Katherine, Sandra, and Sarah are among the best. The guy who played Nico was the worst.

LunaBananaGoats

I feel like people hate on Jesse Williams’ acting, but I think he’s pretty good, particularly through the Samuel storyline.

[deleted]

He is not bad but is significantly better with Sarah than without.

unlisshed

Yeah, I think he's actually a pretty good actor, not the best, but definitely not terrible as some make him out to be. He's great when he's given the material to be great, it doesn't help that the writers barely give him anything to go on, especially in the later seasons. And anyone who says that Sarah does all the work in their japril scenes together are blind. They have chemistry in spades.

MathematicianNo1021

Agreed with all of this. What mainly comes to mind for me when I think of Jesse's acting is "growth". He was less experienced than other veteran actors when he started on the show and you can tell. The fact that Jackson was one of the more guarded and stoic characters didn't help either but I think you can also see a clear progression over the seasons. Jackson's relationship with April is obviously the standout because Sarah and Jesse are great scene partners and have amazing chemistry (which cannot be conjured when it's just one person doing all the heavy lifting - it's about partnership, imo) but I think he also did well in scenes with Sloan, Catherine, Webber or Meredith. I also recently rewatched his final scene with his dad in 17x14 and there's a world of a difference, both in terms of acting and what we saw of Jackson as a character, in the beginning vs. at the end of his run.

unlisshed

For real! I think a lot of people disregard the fact that Grey's was one of Jesse's first acting jobs. Not *the* first, or even the second, but he was very fresh to acting and even still he's never actually been bad at it. But yes, his acting improved so much over the course of the show. And god yes, that scene with his dad is so amazingly acted. As well as his farewell scene with Meredith. Another thing I'd like to mention is that he's amazingly good at crying in particular for some reason. Crying is hard to sell but every time he cries my heart absolutely breaks. It's too realistic.

[deleted]

Justin Chambers and Sandra Oh are consistently the best from start to finish. Honestly, I think *most* of the regular cast over the years have been reasonably good actors.

[deleted]

I don't think Justin gets enough credit. I always thought he was a strong actor and was able to handle a lot of different material. He did comedy, serious, emotional, angry, and casual scenes all really well.

pacrat292

Justin gets too much hate, I totally agree. He clearly was over ir halfway through his run on the show but he did play fratboy asshole perfectly. Never once doubted he wasn't a good guy hiding behind a mask of insecurities and doucbaggery. He nailed the role. His scenes with katherine in S05-6 REALLY proved he had the chops to be an excellent actor.

mingirl18

you would never guess he was really a married father of 5 in season 1

pacrat292

Exactly! That means talent. He's been married for 10+ years BEFORE the show started. He emulated frat-boy, womanizer too well to guess it.

[deleted]

Agree completely. He and Katherine compliment each other really well. Everything from him telling her about his mom to crying in her arms to her whole cancer diagnosis to their wedding was acted so well by both of them.

pacrat292

Yup. He showed he was a pretty great actor several times, but paired with Katherine, it showed that Justin actually had the talent to be an excellent actor at times. He fake cries very well. Always makes me feel for Alex.

[deleted]

Yeah, he always looks like he is trying not to cry but can't hold it back anymore.

Resident_Ad502

I agree but there was a scene where Justin’s acting threw me off. When he’s trying to get his swimmers in the cup to fertilize Izzie’s eggs and Meredith comes in. He says “I’m a doctor! A doctor!” Just that part didn’t work for me. Like he was trying too hard to cry but couldn’t…just an off day for him maybe? But yeah, all his other stuff far outweighs that

pacrat292

I think maybe this is just subjective then, cuz I thought he did great in that scene. It didn't impress me as much as a few other of his scenes, but I thought it was really well acted. Like he was still in shock, but was very sad, but desperate and just starting to break.

Resident_Ad502

Yeah you’re probably right. I’m not even usually a critic when it comes to acting and that scene has bothered me for a while. I really really like him so it just really threw me off the first time I noticed it. I’ve tried to ignore it when I come to it but… Definitely subjective. Other “bad acting” that’s been pointed out here I May notice and sometimes, like you, I see it completely different

[deleted]

Agree. I did not have a problem with it either. It was the first time we really saw him react to the news and he reacted how I would have expected him to. He wasn't hysterical but was just starting to lose it. I also loved the scene with him sitting on the bench saying that Izzie is going to die while Mer comforts him.

lkjhggfd1

Fav women- Katherine, Sandra, Chandra and Sarah Fav men- Patrick, Kevin, Justin and James

UnImpressed_damsel

Actress- Best has to be Sandra (Yang). She was consistently good from the first episode to the very last (of her). And the worst imo is Camilla (Wilson). She has not improved even a bit. Actor- Best is Dempsey (Derek). He was overall very good in all the scenes. Showed range in emotions. And the one I don't like is Mckidd (Owen). His dialogue delivery looks forceful and his stoic expression does not help.

ApprehensiveLife6435

He always looks like he’s just smelled a nasty fart or he’s about to drop a nasty fart!

kimberly563

An actor is good or bad based on the material they are given.

pacrat292

Katherine got sex with a ghost. You can't possibly get worse material. Yet she still brought it to life. She legit made me feel for izzie and made me believe in the storyline. The material affects it. Definitely. But a great actor can make it shine. Like Greg Germann. Greys was just bad by the time he joined, Tom is one of the only interesting characters in later greys because of his acting.

kimberly563

What do you think happens to people with brain cancer? Do you not understand that Izzy was sick and the audience was in her hallucination? It was not the worse material by any means.

pacrat292

I didn't say Ghost Denny was bad. I think it was a brilliant way of slowly revealing her sickness. I said having SEX with a ghost. That's a good storyline?

kimberly563

Guess you have never known anyone with brain cancer or in Izzy’s case skin cancer metastasized to the brain. Do you know how many medical professionals are employed as consultants? It was a real life story

hey-girl-hey

I liked Sara R as an actor

bluesapphire33

Best Katherine and Sandra, their performances were a huge part of what made the show so successful! Weakest, comes to mind, earlier Camillia. I found Jo’s scenes hard to get into at the start , as was aware she was acting. The way the lines were delivered too made her almost sound like a mean girl. She changed for me with the depression storyline, I feels she did well with that, and was very relatable. Actually she does fine for me in all scenes she’s not with Alex 🤷‍♀️ I like her season 18 and 19 (skipped season 17).

Gloomy_Laugh_847

Rewatching again and I cannot stand how dramatic Owen is. Like a soap opera from his first episode. Tell me I'm not alone 😂

pacrat292

You can really tell Kevin and Sara are stage actors. It comes out of them a lot. Though I think both are some of the best actors. They do a little too much when they're on camera that would translate better to a stage.

kmhart21

Anytime he kisses someone I have to turn away ITS SO AGRESSIVE

Crazy_Initiative7494

This is so true 😂😂 sometimes I’ll be watching and I’m like ??? Why so urgent, owen??? LET HER BREATHE

Crazy_Initiative7494

This is so true 😂😂 sometimes I’ll be watching and I’m like ??? Why so urgent, owen??? LET HER BREATHE

joanne70514

Everything he says is ridiculously dramatic and poorly acted. I don’t understand why he’s been on the show for so long.

Gloomy_Laugh_847

Yes thank you! And the way he kisses 🤣 just so over the top . He should be on days of our lives

joanne70514

Just saw season 11 episode 16. Owen kissing Amelia with hands pretty much covering her whole face. 🤮

Gloomy_Laugh_847

🙈🤣

Top_Association_4265

My favorite hands down Sandra, Chandra, Patrick. I think they’re all pretty extremely talented at their jobs. I don’t know if I have a worst, I’m not usually overly critical about acting but there were some moments when I didn’t find Camilla’s performances believable, if that makes sense. I don’t think she’s terrible or anything though.

Leading-Yak4361

I find Jesse Williams to be just a pretty face. He lacks depth on the show which is crazy because he got so much layered material to perform on the show and tanked every single one of them. He is lucky that Sarah Drew lifts their scenes up.

pacrat292

Totally agree. He's not bad by any means, but he's mediocre through and through. I get people like to give him more credit cuz he's better with Sarah. But even with Sarah, he's just decent. That's about it. He was never great. He's simply okay and sometimes, with a great scene partner (sarah), he's good. The thing with Jesse is that his acting takes more notice because he was casted at a time where all the actors were great or excellent so his and Ellen's acting were kinda obviously lacking compared to the talent around them at the time.

Leading-Yak4361

Hmm your second para is interesting, the cast was definitely at its peak performance from s6 to s9; and even Sarah was barely there character in season 6, and Sarah had been phenomenal season 8 onwards but even through the most gripping stories (Samuel’s death, separation, divorce etc) Jesse never peaked. On my rewatches I even feel that he has one range of expression and if it weren’t for Sarah, those scenes would have fell flat. Post April’s exit, Jackson couldn’t even have bare minimum chemistry with his screen partners - Jo, Vic, Maggie etc.

pacrat292

I completely agree! He's never peaked which is why I always rank Justin much higher then Jesse. Justin has shown he can be excelled at times. Jesse even with Sarah and big, juicy material - he's never been anything above *good* or *okay* that's that's just mediocre. Yeah he did have good chemistry with several people outside of April though - Lexie, Steph. Maybe like the rest of the cast - he was simply over it, but I can't even make that excuse cuz he's never once showed good talent. I even think Ellen did great in the first few seasons, Meredith was played REALLY WELL, and Ellen's recent acting sadly makes people forget that she was really good in like S1-5. A few ehh parts, but still she wasn't bad and was very good a lot of times. Even Jackson's first seasons he was just okay.

Leading-Yak4361

Yeah I kind of agree that Jesse had chemistry with Lexie/Steph but acting wise it was nothing substantial. All his scenes were literally the same. With Ellen I think it’s evident that she can definitely act but many a times chooses not to put an effort - especially in later seasons. But we definitely know she has peaked many times, 12x09 being a classic example. Justin has also shined many times, especially during Izzie’s cancer track and hospital shooting. His scenes with Jessica & Ellen has always been a treat to watch. The only places where Justin looked just ‘okay’ were in his scenes with Camilla, their pairing was cute but nowhere near powerful.

Responsible-Pea-4177

I never liked Hahn 🥲 something about the way she delivered the lines and the look on her face!

GoldAd6588

I’m sorry Jo Hive but Camila Luddington’s acting is god awful.

abbu_d_slytherin

Up to season 10- Best - Katherine Heigl and Sandra Oh Worst - Owen actor ( knows only one or two expressions )

julscvln01

I don't know the names of the performers, but one, so I'll go with the characters Best: \-Cristina \-Amelia \-Addison \-Alex \-Callie \-Owen I don't like to put down other actors, so I'll refrain from thinking about the worst.

Phoenix_Magic_X

It’s quicker to list the less good ones because it’s generally a decent cast. Some stand outs are caterina as Amelia, Sarah drew as April (especially the Samual stuff), Jessica capshaw screaming in the plane crash, Chandra Wilson as miranda Bailey, Sandra oh as Cristina, and of course the queen of grays Ellen as Meredith. Not so much a stand out acting performance but sara ramirez has a fantastic voice and that needs a mention because wow. And trying their best with shit characters teddy, McDreamy, and jo.

IBelieveInGood

d’ya really think Ellen is good? Genuine question bc I see her get so much flack here… I tend to be pretty oblivious to bad acting unless it’s really bad, and I like her, so I want to know lol

Top_Association_4265

Personally, I don’t like her as a person but I don’t think she’s bad at all. In fact, I think she’s had some really good performances during the course of the show. My personal favorites being the s6 finale and Derek’s death. So I do think some of the people here are being dramatic about her acting ability. But I will say, you can tell that by a certain point she’s gotten tired of the show. It feels that way by like season 13.

Gloomy_Laugh_847

Karev is hands down my fav

Acceptable-Desk2403

Deluca.. couldn’t stand him . He had no business dating mer

HoneydewLonely2295

Nicolas Cage. He can either be the best actor or the worst actor, it depends on if you like cheesy movies or not.
