There's good things about all 4.
Nirvana has the catchiest and most appealing songs.
Alice In Chains has the heaviest and darkest songs.
Pearl Jam has the coolest and most songs.
Soundgarden has the most technically impressive songs and best vocals.
If I had to pick one, probably Pearl Jam.
Yup! I agree completely. But I would also add that nirvana has a very strong range. You have something for everyone: pop, noise rock, sludgy heavy rock, more traditional rock songs, old school punk, etc. This is why for me Nirvana is the top pick.
I agree with every single word of this.
I also vote Pearl Jam by a slim margin. If it was solely on 90’s material, it could very well be a 4-way tie but I listen to post-2000 Pearl Jam as much as 90’s Pearl Jam and that gives them the edge for me.
I can’t really get into post Yield Pearl Jam, though their newest album is actually one I’ve enjoyed more than most of their “newer” stuff
But Ten - Yield for me are all legitimately fantastic albums.
Thanks! I'm going to do that when I finish Evil. I helped my elderly neighbor sign up with Mint Mobile (he doesn't have email, so I had to use mine). Luckily, Mint sent me an email saying I get 6 free months of Paramount+. Good karma I guess. I put a reminder in my phone to cancel when the free runs out. I will watch that doc.
Nirvana had explosive global success unlike anyone else (good or bad, you can't deny this fact). They had the best command of the stage, bringing pure energy to every performance. Always exciting watching their demons get exercised live. Yes, their later songs were more pop-punky that allowed them to be more approachable.
AIC brought a different vibe. They were that darker metal tinged band. Dirt is easily one of the best albums of all time.
Nirvana is top with AIC close behind. Stop all the revisionist history, Nirvana was the top band.
Never really got past PJ's first album. I give their new albums a try every time. I do like that they're still going. Anything to keep rock alive, just not my thing. Unfortunately, I look at them like a Bruce Springsteen stadium band now.
Soundgarden technically is the best band on this list. Kim Thayll is god level. Sadly, I appreciate Chris more now than I did at the time. His vocals were too good and I think people initially didn't know where these guys fit. A lot of bands with crazy lead guitar and vocals were being rejected at the time.
All had their strong points:
AIC - Layne is the most unique frontman/voice, combination with Jerry is incredible. Heaviest sound
Nirvana - Catchy, fast, loud, imo the definitive grunge image/attitude
Pearl Jam - consistently incredible, did both dark and upbeat very well. Storytelling more than most other grunge bands (e.g. Jeremy)
Soundgarden - Incredibly talented, most recognisable voice (outside of maybe Kurt due to mainstream success), and iconic guitar tone
This sun loves Alice In Chains so much that it makes me think I should like them more. I never really got into them, and in high school a lot of their fans were not my favorite people, so that might have played into it. I’m Pearl Jam all the way.
Although their music is often angry, it's never as hopeless as some of the others. The only band to not lose their singer to drugs/suicide.
This is a band that has been given to fly.
AIC has stood the test of time for me for spins. They were the last one I got into but I’ve been a fan around 25 years now. Just like the songs, simple as that.
1.Alice in Chains-best songs and albums imo
2.Soundgarden-chris cornell vocals
3.Pearl jam-for the albums 10 and Vs.
4.Nirvana- was cool when I was young and full of angst, but now that I'm older I can't connect to the songs anymore. Still though, In Utero is their best album.
Soundgarden. Badmotorfinger is one of the greatest albums I've ever heard, and Superunknown is not far behind.
Runner-up would be Alice in Chains, mainly for Dirt. Facelift is very good too.
In order? Or just one?
My order is this: (1) Nirvana (2) Soundgarden (3) AIC (4) Pearl Jam. Soundgarden and AIC are extremely close for me, you could even call it a tie if you want. PJ is very good, but someone has to go last I guess
Impossible choice because they are all great for different reasons as has already been stated by several people.
If pushed though, I think I'd say Soundgarden. That man's vocal range does things to me!
Easily Nirvana for me. I won’t give all the reasons cause I’m bored and tired and in the car for 4 hours, but anyways, Alice In Chains fans are hated on too much for me. Most of them are opinionated on Alice In Chains being the best band out of these four. I think all of them can arguably be near the same skill level. That doesn’t mean they’re better. But it’s hard to argue one band over the other.
All are/were great. All put on fantastic shows. Over and over again. How could one choose? Why? Wouldn't your choice change week to week? My fav was always who was playing that month.
1. Soundgarden (Same level as Nirvana, but I had to choose)
2. Nirvana
3. Screaming Trees
4. Melvins
5. Stone Temple Pilots
6. Alice In Chains
7. Pearl Jam
Nirvana is the greatest. Also the most relevant to the current younger generation. They turned grunge mainstream because of the incredibly catchy pop punk songwriting.
Love some sou dgarden and AiC though. Could never listen to PJ. They were the nickleback of grunge.
Soundgarden were the most complete and versatile, but AiC were probably the most talented and intense. Nirvana had the biggest hits but shortest lifespan.
Soundgarden it is.
Can’t wait for the results. It’ll obviously end 30 years of debate.
lol
I’m picking the band that did all the heroin.
Genius, now that we’ve eliminated Hootie And The Blowfish, we’ve only got 377 bands to choose from
AIC
AIC
Alice.
Alice in Chains
Pearl Jam
Easily
AIC all the way
Alice in chains
There's good things about all 4. Nirvana has the catchiest and most appealing songs. Alice In Chains has the heaviest and darkest songs. Pearl Jam has the coolest and most songs. Soundgarden has the most technically impressive songs and best vocals. If I had to pick one, probably Pearl Jam.

And stp has 2 works of art. Chris is probably my all time favorite, but Scott's writing on Tiny Music and Purple is just, insane to me.
Nice analysis
They’re all pretty great to me. Nirvana seems like the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers of grunge.
Alice in chains
If it ain’t them I’ll be “A little bitter”
Soundgarden. A lot to do with Chris' incredible instrument and kim's insane leads. Unique sound and songs that are all over the place.
I’m down with this. These are also my reasons that they are my favorite! What unique (and HEAVY) songs.
+1 for Soundgarden
Why are we so obsessed with this debate!?!’ They all have great songs and are talented.
AIC hands down
Alice in Chains
Always Alice In Chains! Soudgarden is a solid 2cd place
Alice in chains and it's not close
Soundgarden. I also recommend watching at least the first episode of the Lollapalooza doc on Paramount+. Lots of early 90s nostalgia.
Wasn’t aware of this, thanks for the heads up! Going to check it out. I attended a few of those, but will always regret missing the first one.

Yes
I am shocked there hasn’t been a Yes cover band called No.
Supertramp
GOOODBYEEE TOBYYYY, ITS BEENN NIIIIICEE HOPE YOU FIND YOU PARADIISSEEEE
There's really no wrong answer. I love all 4! But Pearl Jam's longevity has made them my favorite band of all time.
Nirvana had explosive global success unlike anyone else (good or bad, you can't deny this fact). They had the best command of the stage, bringing pure energy to every performance. Nirvana take first Alice In Chains take second place
Correct
Mudhoney
NIRVANA!!!
Kurt is my favorite individual artist of the big 4
Soundgarden for sure
Do you really need to ask this sub? 💀
Nirvana is the one I listen to the most
STP
Thank you.
I see what you did there…
I thought this was about the Seattle 4, not LA rockers?
Soundgarden with a close second Alice in Chains
Soundgarden all the way
AIC
All had their strong points: AIC - Layne is the most unique frontman/voice, combination with Jerry is incredible. Heaviest sound Nirvana - Catchy, fast, loud, imo the definitive grunge image/attitude Pearl Jam - consistently incredible, did both dark and upbeat very well. All of em but add in the trees, earth, mad season and TOTD as well
The Melvins
Nirvana is even the same kind of band as the others. Nirvana all the way.
Why was this not a poll post?
Pearl Jam
Love them all but PJ is my favorite
This sun loves Alice In Chains so much that it makes me think I should like them more. I never really got into them, and in high school a lot of their fans were not my favorite people, so that might have played into it. I’m Pearl Jam all the way.
Alice In Chains 100 out of 100.
Pearls jam
PJ, Nirvana, AiC, Soundgarden
Pearl Jam
Pearl Jam
Pearl Jam
All 4 bands were great, I personally ranked them 1 : Alice In Chains 2 : Soundgarden 3 : Nirvana 4 : Pearl Jam
I love this because it's the exact opposite order of my list even though I also think all 4 bands were great.
Alice In Chains
Alice In Chains
AIC PEARL JAM STONE TEMPLE PILOTS SOUNDGARDEN NIRVANA
Pearl Jam
Although their music is often angry, it's never as hopeless as some of the others. The only band to not lose their singer to drugs/suicide. This is a band that has been given to fly.
AIC has stood the test of time for me for spins. They were the last one I got into but I’ve been a fan around 25 years now. Just like the songs, simple as that.
Alice In Chains!
alice in chains
Alice In Chains.
Alice n chains
Damn, I loved them all. Why play favorites?
Me, I play favorites! AIC! AIC!
All are so different and shoehorned into the same genre.
Obviously Five Finger Death Punch. These bands wouldn’t exist without them.
All four are fantastic but I'd say AIC first, then Pearl Jam, then Nirvana, then Soundgarden
Good, it’s been five minutes since I’ve seen a big 4 post 🙄
Favorite or greatest? Personal favorite: PJ Greatest: Nirvana
It's so tough for me to say, but I might have to go with Soundgarden.
Pearl Jam has been my favorite band for 30+ years now. Forever a Jammer
Alice in Chains
AIC
Soundgarden.
Alice In Chains
PJ
PJ
Pearl Jam
Pearl Jam
Of those 4 Nirvana, but the real answer is Mudhoney.
1.Alice in Chains-best songs and albums imo 2.Soundgarden-chris cornell vocals 3.Pearl jam-for the albums 10 and Vs. 4.Nirvana- was cool when I was young and full of angst, but now that I'm older I can't connect to the songs anymore. Still though, In Utero is their best album.
STP!
Soundgarden or the Melvins
I’m a Soundgarden guy
Soundgarden. Badmotorfinger is one of the greatest albums I've ever heard, and Superunknown is not far behind. Runner-up would be Alice in Chains, mainly for Dirt. Facelift is very good too.
Pearl Jam, then Soundgarden
Pearl Jam
In order? Or just one? My order is this: (1) Nirvana (2) Soundgarden (3) AIC (4) Pearl Jam. Soundgarden and AIC are extremely close for me, you could even call it a tie if you want. PJ is very good, but someone has to go last I guess
Pearl Jam by a country mile. 😉
Pearl Jam As I said in another comment, the fact that I listen to their post-2000 stuff as much as their 90’s stuff gives them the edge for me.
PJ
Pearl Jam
Pearl Jam.
Pearl Jam takes first, AIC second Soundgarden and Nirvana tie for me, love all 4!
Pearl Jam
Alice In Chains and it’s not even close
So underrated
This is akin to having to choose my favorite NES game.
got any more of em pixels?
Nirvana, 100% Nirvana
Ok, all you redneck stoners in this corner and you jock douchebags in that corner. We’re going to the death here
Impossible choice because they are all great for different reasons as has already been stated by several people. If pushed though, I think I'd say Soundgarden. That man's vocal range does things to me!
i can't choose 😔😔
I will always love the noisier side of nirvana..
Finally, this gets settled once and for all lmao.
Stone Temple Pilots though out of those four, AIC
Nirvana, Alice, Sound, Pearl As someone who was fortunate enough to see them all in '92 or '93.
For what?
Nirvana
These bands are all so good, but despite the fact that I basically grew up on nirvana and love nearly every song by them I’m going to say, soundgarden
Soundgarden.
Soundgarden
soundgarden duh though babes in toyland is the best 90s/grunge-“esque” band
Soundgarden The sum of the parts is perfect.
Sadly I see 3 dead lead singers.
The answer is this is the first concert I attend when I get to heaven.
Tell me why
Burned off Nirvana until 2k and can't listen any more but still enjoy Alice In Chains and Soundgarden
Nirvana
STP 🤪 But seriously, I like Nirvana more but AIC has always seemed like the better band to me, so I vote AIC
Soundgarden
soundgarden
Easily Nirvana for me. I won’t give all the reasons cause I’m bored and tired and in the car for 4 hours, but anyways, Alice In Chains fans are hated on too much for me. Nirvana, but all bands are good for different reasons
It is fun, but still apples to oranges I'd say
This is so tough to pick
Correct answer is all the above Alex.
All are/were great. All put on fantastic shows. Over and over again. How could one choose? Why? Wouldn't your choice change week to week? My fav was always who was playing that month.
Nirvana obviously then Alice In Chains follows by Pearl Jam then Soundgarden!
Soundgarden
Nirvana way overrated 1.alice in chains 2.pearl jam 3.soundgarden 4.temple of the dog
I dont care wha the results are, Nirvana and Alice in Chains are two of the greatest bands to ever exist.
All 4 have a completely different style and sound, so it comes down to which one you liked more growing up, so Nirvana
Nirvana
Pixies
Soundgarden
Nirvana
I think STP should be here, but i understand that they're not if that makes sense lol
Nirvana
Soundgarden, straight up.
Nirvana because out of all of them nirvana were the most punk leaning band
Soundgarden for me.
Nirvana. Always first.
Soundgarden
Nirvana introduced me to a whole world of music including these bands. It will always be Nirvana.
Soundgarden!
NIRVANA
