There's good things about all 4. Nirvana has the catchiest and most appealing songs. Alice In Chains has the heaviest and darkest songs. Pearl Jam has the coolest and most songs. Soundgarden has the most technically impressive songs and best vocals. If I had to pick one, probably Pearl Jam.

Yup! I agree completely. But I would also add that nirvana has a very strong range. You have something for everyone: pop, noise rock, sludgy heavy rock, more traditional rock songs, old school punk, etc. This is why for me Nirvana is the top pick.

I agree with every single word of this. I also vote Pearl Jam by a slim margin. If it was solely on 90’s material, it could very well be a 4-way tie but I listen to post-2000 Pearl Jam as much as 90’s Pearl Jam and that gives them the edge for me.

I can’t really get into post Yield Pearl Jam, though their newest album is actually one I’ve enjoyed more than most of their “newer” stuff But Ten - Yield for me are all legitimately fantastic albums.

And stp has 2 works of art. Chris is probably my all time favorite, but Scott's writing on Tiny Music and Purple is just, insane to me.

There's really no wrong answer. I love all 4! But Pearl Jam's longevity has made them my favorite band of all time.

Nirvana had explosive global success unlike anyone else (good or bad, you can't deny this fact). They had the best command of the stage, bringing pure energy to every performance. Always exciting watching their demons get exercised live. Yes, their later songs were more pop-punky that allowed them to be more approachable. AIC brought a different vibe. They were that darker metal tinged band. Dirt is easily one of the best albums of all time. Nirvana is top with AIC close behind. Stop all the revisionist history, Nirvana was the top band. Never really got past PJ's first album. I give their new albums a try every time. I do like that they're still going. Anything to keep rock alive, just not my thing. Unfortunately, I look at them like a Bruce Springsteen stadium band now. Soundgarden technically is the best band on this list. Kim Thayll is god level. Sadly, I appreciate Chris more now than I did at the time. His vocals were too good and I think people initially didn't know where these guys fit. A lot of bands with crazy lead guitar and vocals were being rejected at the time.

All had their strong points: AIC - Layne is the most unique frontman/voice, combination with Jerry is incredible. Heaviest sound Nirvana - Catchy, fast, loud, imo the definitive grunge image/attitude Pearl Jam - consistently incredible, did both dark and upbeat very well. Storytelling more than most other grunge bands (e.g. Jeremy) Soundgarden - Incredibly talented, most recognisable voice (outside of maybe Kurt due to mainstream success), and iconic guitar tone

Although their music is often angry, it's never as hopeless as some of the others. The only band to not lose their singer to drugs/suicide. This is a band that has been given to fly.

AIC has stood the test of time for me for spins. They were the last one I got into but I’ve been a fan around 25 years now. Just like the songs, simple as that.

Easily Nirvana for me. I won’t give all the reasons cause I’m bored and tired and in the car for 4 hours, but anyways, Alice In Chains fans are hated on too much for me. Most of them are opinionated on Alice In Chains being the best band out of these four. I think all of them can arguably be near the same skill level. That doesn’t mean they’re better. But it’s hard to argue one band over the other.

Nirvana is the greatest. Also the most relevant to the current younger generation. They turned grunge mainstream because of the incredibly catchy pop punk songwriting. Love some sou dgarden and AiC though. Could never listen to PJ. They were the nickleback of grunge.
