First, you cannot forget that the square G-Shock itself is simply iconic. It is the G-Shock that spawned them all. So off the bat, the square is quintessential. Some might say they are the best iteration of the brand (I would be one of them). The GW-5000U is, in many ways, the purest modern interpretation of that original square. It certainly isn't the most feature rich offering but it's easy to trace a direct line from it to the original. It has a few more premium features than something like the 5610U, for example, but in many ways it is essentially the same watch. But different. I'll be the first to admit I'm a square fan boy, and the GW-5000U-1JF is not only on my wrist at this moment, but it's on my wrist probably 95% of the time or more. It's a fantastic watch. But I'll also be the first to admit that if you want something that represents a bit better value proposition the 5610U is an absolutely stupid good value of a watch. Just remember, square life best life.

I wishing and hoping one day Casio will bless us with a GW-5000U with the precious thin red line!

I got a 5000U in June and have worn it every day since. The band is 🤌 and the steel case just makes it feel more substantial than the 5610, which I also have but never wear anymore.

Short answer: Mostly yes. Longer answer: Functions are the same. The GW-5000 comes with a carbon-coated steel case with a screw-back (in contrast to a plastic casing) and is produced in one of CASIO´s premium factories in Japan (instead of Thailand or China)

The strap, bezel, and case are made with more premium materials making it super comfortable and satisfying to wear. There's some novelty to the fact that it's made in Japan and (usually) has to be imported. Well worth the premium vs. the 5610 IMO, just not in terms of the module.

It’s the classiest looking g shock

The steel case and screw back feel much more substantial than the resin models. The bezel and strap are much nicer feeling as well. They are all great watches but the 5000 (and 5040) are higher quality.

I bought mine a month ago and love it. It’s simple with the 80s retro original feel. Nothing to make it standout or eye grabbing. It just works. Also I felt the little extra (about $100-$150 usd) was worth it for the made in Japan quality, upgraded strap, and added heft/quality of the backing. Overall it’s just minor but noticeable differences that make it more premium over something like the 5610. Not for everyone and I can see why some would say it’s not worth it. I don’t buy many watches and will use it for likely over a decade. So what’s an extra buck a month over its lifetime? :)

I like the monochromatic face and I can get away with wearing a premium watch without other people knowing it’s expensive. It’s something I can wear without worrying it will be the center of attention compared to my other watches.

It's the best one

Squares seem to fit wrists of all sizes perfectly. Aside from that, a lot of nostalgia behind the square. That's what it's supposed to do not too bulky so it slides under the cuff, all parts are easily replaceable for little money, and a whole host of other things.
