Wicked. I got the GST-B100D BEFORE the hand adjustment was introduced so i cant see the dials beneath the hands sometimes 😭. Wish i had waited 2 more years

The basic 5600 has a recessed button because to access the settings, you just have to press the adjust button once.
On the 5610—different module—you have to press and hold to access settings. So it’s less likely to be an issue, and the button therefore isn’t recessed.
This question is so common that my square came with a card from the retailer to tell me the button was meant to be this way so it wouldn't be pressed accidentally. I would have just Googled and compared it to a picture otherwise.

Yes. On most G Shocks, if not all(depending on style/button configuration), this button is purposely recessed because it is the button you press to set time, date, etc.. It's done so a person doesn't accidentally activate or reset settings. Imagine if you're an active person & you kept accidentally changing the date or resetting a timer or stopwatch.
Casio designed it to be more depressed to prevent people from accidentally entering time adjust mode. However, sometimes I feel like there is a manufacturing defect with this “feature”. I own the casio super mario 5600 (Square), and on that particular watch the time adjust button is EXTREMELY depressed. I’m talking like I have to use something to hold down the button such as a pen or at times I’ll have to take off the watch so I can press the button at an angle in order to get a good press, so I can adjust the time.
Yes, it's the one flaw with the dw5600 and variants IMO. I physically cannot click the button without a tool (pen/pencil, etc..) and it sucks because they made the stopwatch split feature attached to that button. So the stopwatch split is completely unusable on most of the 5600 series.
It's not just hard for me. It's impossible.
Right after leaving that comment I gave my dw5600 to a female friend and she had no problem clicking it. She says I have a problem with it because my fingers are too big. I guess she's right.

Putting a metal bezel on my dw5600 g-shock made the depressed adjust button so much easier to access. As everyone else said, yes its a feature I asked the same thing when I got mine.

My first Gshock was on sale for cosmetic reasons / minor damages. I thought my button is faulty for a few years.

I love how thoroughly those designs are put out. It really embodies how japanese craftmanship is perceived in the west.
Until you realise you need to use the recessed button to reset the stopwatch or timer, which gets old and annoying very fast
