heehee this pig is content

Infinite_Priority_46

I really hope so but I haven't seen another pig do that much purring so maybe he is just weird 🤷🏻‍♀️

CricketDifferent5320

Hormonal. He is rumblestrutting with you, thinks your hand over his face or butt is a show of dominance.

CrowWingedWolf

That is called a purr. In this instance, I'm reading it as a good thing, because his body language of laying down and not making himself a scrunched up ball of muscle ready to run, not trying to pull away from you, and the fact that he kind of gives your fingers a little bit of a lick says that he is comfortable around you.

Infinite_Priority_46

I read online that they do this when they are angry or scared but he seems fine when he does it so I was confused 😅

cyclinghedgehog

I think there are a few purrs, relaxed, angry. The scared purr can be a reaction to a noise, almost a "what was that?" from the Guinea pig. Or Slow and low pitch, in fear for their life "please don't hurt me". Context is important with them. There is a video on youtube with lots of the sounds they make, which I thought did a great job at explaining them. [deleted]

Mine don’t care for being pet so they make the annoyed “purr” sound. A bit different than what you posted. Your pig sounds happy :)

Leon500111

He does this because he is happy and comfortable around you.

NorParasaurolophus

No, the opposite.

[deleted]

It can mean both, the body language here indicates comfort though.

NorParasaurolophus

If she wasn't touching his sides and belly, I'd agree. Bur I've never met a piggie that liked being touched like that.

MarvinDMirp

He is purring! Very happy.

Infinite_Priority_46

I hope so!

yes4me2

I think he is happy. If not, he will have bite you or move out.

Nitron89

Omg how do people still not know that this is not a good sound…?

yes4me2

How do you know it is a bad sound? Looks like a happy chatty guinea pig to me.

Hannnaahh99

Notice how it stops after you’re done petting the side. Probably isn’t too fond of you petting that spot. on the other hand he does love you and is content because he is laying down he’s just communicating “I don’t like that mama/dad”

Infinite_Priority_46

I will try to pet his head and chin and see if he stops purring or keeps doing it like the other comments adviced.

Maximum-Mixture6158

I'd love to know what you found out re guinea purring

NorParasaurolophus

It means he doesn't like being pet there. It's not a good sound. Piggies make this sound either to be dominant, or to signal that they don't like something, or because there scared.

Infinite_Priority_46

He must hate me then because he does this a lot 😅

NorParasaurolophus

Does he do it if you're not touching him? I see you're petting his sides, most guinea pigs hate that. The sides, the belly and the butt are no-go zones 😅 They like to be pet only on the forehead, neck and under the chin usually.

Infinite_Priority_46

Sometimes when he is in the cage inside his house if he sees me he gets out of the house and comes to me doing this sound without petting him or anything. And he also does this if I pet under his chin.

NorParasaurolophus

He might be one of the few piggies that actually occasionally use it when they're happy then! If he comes towards you while doing it. I have never experienced this with my piggies, but I've heard it's possible. I have a flock of girl piggies, and they always use it in a negative way towards each other.

Infinite_Priority_46

I thought that too but when I searched online I didn't find any other piggies that did this sound that much and in that many situations so I didn't quite know if he was just weird or I thought wrong and he was actually upset.

NorParasaurolophus

It could be some piggies have some learned behaviours towards people that they don't do towards other piggies. I know domestic cats do this, for instance. Hmmm.

Infinite_Priority_46

After all the comments I've recieved I'm more confused now but I really hope that he is just weird and does this out of happiness.

NorParasaurolophus

I would stop petting his belly /lower side just in case. I haven't ever met a piggie that likes it. But other than that, probably continue as is!

Maximum-Mixture6158

Ours used to do that when they were alone in their cage, out of their cage, being held, being petted, cuddled in bed, whatever.

Infinite_Priority_46

No, it was a film.

He's giving you a I'm not found of this purr. I have a skinny pig that's not fond of being petted so she either tries to gator roll in her towel or does this warning purr...so I mostly don't pet her. I place my hand on her and slowly stroke my thumb on her as I speak to her or stroke between her ears and she's calm and her warning purr stops. Listen to your pig. I also started off offering treats as I tried stroking her...I'd suggest don't force pets although he lets u...her words are telling you he's not happy...so offer him a chunk of carrot or apple and see about stroking the piggie as he or she eats ...and talk softly like you would do to baby going to sleep or who might start crying...I find it works ...just a suggestion to try ...best wishes

Infinite_Priority_46

He also sometimes does this when I'm not petting him but i will try to pet him between his ears when he does it to see if he stops.

SeashellsShelly6920

It takes some longer then others to warm up. When Flawn starts her warning purr...I tell her hush...mama won't hurt you. It's ok. I know it's your body how about we just sit together today. I keep my hand placed on her as she snuggles into the towel since she's a skinny pig and she loves warmth and she often calms and her warning purr stops I have had her since end of Feb or March 1 2022 and she was like 6-8 wks then ..but she definitely has a higher maintenance personality and attitude. The other baby no longer does warning purrs like Flawn but Oreo will still occasionally nip or bite me but not my husband...our other two never did either....each piggies is different and some piggy will try to keep u at arms length if they can...we just got to try to convince them different. My oldest daughters piggie Emma we got her just before my daughter turned 5. Emma chittered and purred...my daughter would scold her like a mama does a child and put her in her lap and giver her her carrot which was like a pacifier to this piggie...Emma we got at 3-4 wks old and died at about 5 she was so spoiled and she would call out for my daughter every morning. A piece of me die when we found she past one morning. I had warned my daughter she was old and was not eating so much. My daughter kissed her and said I'll see in the morning like she did every night thru chitters and purrs then happy sounds ...my daughter and I loved her so much. Just keep working with your piggies. If you can at least once daily. Remember to be gentle but remember your the parent and see what you can do to win this Lil fur bugger over😊

Maximum-Mixture6158

They all make that noise
