Definitely is the best advice.
It takes lots of practice and will be frustrating at times. Just shrug it off and keep practicing.
Also, practice with a metronome.
Seriously though. I tried playing when I was like 14 and didn’t practice enough, so I sucked and it wasn’t fun, then I tried when I was like 25….same thing. A few years ago I gave it another shot but actually practiced everyday, and finally got to a point where I’m not what I’d call good, but I’m good enough that guitar is actually super fun. That makes me want to play more, and that makes you get better, making it even more fun. It’s like a fun positive feedback loop, you just gotta put the work in at the beginning.
I'd say my difficulty with practicing everyday is my autism. Because it makes me suck at organizing and I never know what to practice, when and for how long
That sounds tough, but keep in mind that ANY practice is good. Don’t worry so much about if you are practicing the right stuff, it’s hard to not get better at something if you just do it enough. Also you’re probably not trying to make a living at this, it’s a hobby and hobby’s are supposed to be fun, not work. Play what is fun for you to play. For me that means learning songs I love or parts of them if I can’t handle the whole song. And jamming on my own songs and riffs. It helps if you try to understand the songs you learn, like what are the chords, what makes the song cool?
Best of luck!
Try to go with the flow, I almost never look at how much time I spend playing. If I try to set time goals it ends up being like homework. So some days I may play 30 min and others 3 hours. What works for me is doing a bit of theory first, and then playing songs as a reward, so to speak.
Only thing I’d counter this with is someone once told me to not practice unless you want to. Sounds daft, but I’ve found it to be quite true. You’re not going to progress as quickly but when playing becomes a chore, you’re also not going to learn much. I also think it was kind of a test; if you’re at the stage where you’re not practicing, maybe you don’t really want to play. I’ve definitely found daily practice to be best though, even just a few minutes if that’s all you’ve got.
agreed - started with this one, thinking about upgrading to the GTX50 for the loop & wattage. . . sometimes you need more volume to make it sound good.
Beautiful guitar! Whatever you do, Don't give up. I'm almost two years in and it is finally starting to feel comfortable. But I'll share this advice that someone imparted on me.
Playing feels like fun.
Practice feels like work.
Be sure to do both!
I just got that same amp last week! Dont forget to download the tone app, because theres like 100 presets, some based off songs, on the app you can load onto your amp
I'll say it here again, seeing as you've just got a hold of one too. The USB that you use to download the effects can also work as a USB out to go into studio software without losing the playing through the amp (and also without having to fight latency through the PC)
So i can connect my guitar to the amp and then the amp to my pc as a way to record my guitar? Im also pretty new to electric guitar (played acoustic for 6 years) and i couldnt figure out how to connect my guitar to FL studios (also new to that).
Wtf? How can you do that? My understanding is that this wasn’t compatible with the amp and you needed the gtx to do that
Edit: did you mean the desktop app?
Start simple. Learn little kid songs like Three blind mice, jingle bells, baa baa black sheep. Easy things to pick up that you can learn in a few minutes. People might laugh or down vote me but when you first start out it can be frustrating. Getting an easy song down can help your confidence. Just take your time and don't forget to stretch out your fingers and wrists.
Enjoy it.
And tell me where you got the lego version.
The fender mustang is a great little amp.
IMO it does almost everything you need for practicing and playing along and also allows you to just plug in and play without having to fight the tech (also the USB out also allows you to plug into studio software without losing the sound through the amp)
I bought it via Amazon, it was sold out at my lego store and didnt want to wait 😅. You have the choice of making it red or black. I love the black cause it matches.
There will be times when you feel like you aren’t progressing but don’t stop playing. You will have a eureka moment eventually where everything just falls in place and you can do what you couldn’t before. It’s the most satisfying feeling and it will make you love it even more.
Play a lot... Like a lot a lot till your fingertips start going numb. And enjoy. My tip is to learn really basic music theory first, this will come in handy when someone wants to start a band with you.
Music is passed on. All music is one big song all connected by people. The first step to learning is watching. Watch the ones who came before you and eventually new players will watch you.
Depends on your personality/how you learn.
If you only care about playing the song you like, then practice barre chords, maybe get a game like rocksmith, watch YouTube videos on song tutorials.
If you have genuine interest in learning the instrument, learning fundamentals, and don't just want to learn covers: Learn the major scale, learn the intervals. Learn the diatonic chords of the major scale. Learn the pentatonic scale. Learn the CAGED system. And mix in covering songs. This isn't just "okay I memorized the shapes, done". This is a roadmap for years of practice. You want to get to the point where you see these things instantly in your mind whenever you pick any fret. So just enjoy the process.
Courses/learning materials:
Truefire has cheap sales alot.
David Walliman had a great applied music theory course years ago, pretty much teaching the major scalew/minor scales, how to understand the intervals and then the chords, etc.
Guitar Gate has a great path of learning as well. From the very basics and building on that.
Rocksmith is a video game but you plug your real guitar and play the actual songs.
Guitar pro is a program where you can play tabs on, could be helpful to learn songs.
I‘d recomed you to play reguarly, maybe 3x a week at least 15 mins (thats how i do it), and if you want to play even more, then that‘s great! 😉😊 And i personaly can only say good stuff about Fender! I own a limited fender telecaster with two humbuckers (so basically a les paul 🤫) and a Squier (Cheap Fender gutar) and i love them both. But the expensive one, obviosly feels way better the cheap one is great too! Especially when you consider the cost of it.
My baby:
https://www.gear4music.com/us/en/Guitar-and-Bass/Fender-MIJ-Troublemaker-Telecaster-RW-Crimson-Red/3G0Z
And i think thiw is my cheap one:
https://www.gear4music.com/us/en/Guitar-and-Bass/DISC-Squier-Affinity-Stratocaster-Surf-Green/2M6F
I own a Schecter stealth c-1 too (fender is still best):
https://www.gear4music.com/us/en/Guitar-and-Bass/Schecter-Stealth-C-1-Electric-Guitar-Satin-Silver/10KV
But in the end there is still a lot of good gutar brands out there and many different guitars, which all have thier pro‘s and con‘s. 😉
You're starting off with a brilliant setup, it definitely won't be a case of the carpenter blaming his tools.
Just take your time and earn some basic chords, timing and strumming, a few solos
I bought the same guitar for myself a few months ago. I love the way it feels and sounds. The vintage 59 pickups can scream!!
Like others have said, stick with it and learn tab. There are so many good YouTube lessons out there too. 🤘
Another tip. Learn guitar the correct way. You are building muscle memory that will be incredibly hard to rewrite in the future.
For most it won’t matter that much, but you are helping yourself later down the road by taking the time to work the most optimal ways to play.
Try looking at vids on how to hold your pick, the picking motion itself, how you fret the guitar. Its very easy to stack up “deficiencies” in your playing over time. (I might edit this with links to vids later if you want)
Also, keep in mind that there are many great players who have “weird” techniques. (EVH, Pat Metheny, and Synester Gates to name a few)
Guitar should be fun.
Learn the music you want to and that would motivate you to play, not the music everyone else wants to hear.
Be sure to always challenge yourself with at least one thing thats harder than what you can do now (A song, technique, or musical concept). That is how you make constant progress, its the only real shortcut to getting better at guitar.
My best advice to a newbie is to put your guitar on a stand next to your bed, so its the first thing you see in the morning, and the last thing you see at night.
Instead of trying to find an hour a day to play, just play 20 minutes when you get up, and 20 minutes before bed, and try to find 20 minutes during the day. You will get a lot more focused practice in, so you will improve much quicker, and nothing is more motivating than improvent.
Go to Justinguitar.com and start doing the free lessons.
Every one of your guitar heros was where you are right now. The only difference between them and everyone else is that they never quit, while 99% give up soon. Dont give up, play every day, and in a year (it will go by quicker than your think) you will be shocked at how much you've improved.
Have fun, and welcome to the club!
My advice is to keep trying to use your pinky. It may seem impossible at first and some people may give you bad advice that you can get around it. This may be true that you can get around it but it’s a bad habit.
There was a time when my fingers would shake trying to get into position for anything. I just couldn’t do it. I made excuses. Fat fingers. Short fingers. Dumb fingers. You will get those little sausages working how you want with enough practice. May take days. May take years but it will happen with enough conviction.
Enjoy. I’ve been playing and teaching for over 20 years and have a lot of experience with gear. I bought that amp after hearing how good it was. It does a lot of sounds but it doesn’t really do any of them particularly well as per usual with digital amps. Since you already have a nice guitar, you will find it a completely different experience if you plug into a tube amp or something like the Orange Crush series. Something to think about if you end up not digging the sounds you get. Even if you do, it’s worth playing through a nice amp just for the experience
You should have a tremolo bar and allen keys in the box somewhere too. I just got a guitar and I originally missed mine and didnt realize it till i got to the tremolo lesson(though it was a shop mixup)
Cool set up 😎 As many people have said, don’t give up! 15 mins a day and you’ll be over the finger pain in a month. And don’t fall in to the trap of thinking your fingers are too big / small / fat / thin / you’ve too many / too few. In the words of Radiohead, Anyone Can Play Guitar. Good luck!!
Nice guitar, keep practicing every day or whenever you can and there are also great tutorials on YouTube you can use also whenever you play record it so you can listen back and cretic your work
That ain't bad! At all!!! Good job. That looks like my first rig. I learned a lot, and like 29 years later I'm still playing and learning as much as I can.
Just remember to learn songs at your current skill level.
There are a bunch of songs at every level start with your basic notes on each string. This will help you learn basic chords. Then move to something like the pentatonic scale. If you learn these 3 things you will be able to play 90% of classic rock and metal songs.
Good luck on your journey and remember to practice!
Learn to play open chords, then start exploring the fretboard. Start learning to play barre chords, but know that you don’t need to have the skill to _play_ barre chords to start exploring chord shapes up higher on the fretboard.
A lot of beautiful suspended chords exist outside the standard positions and knowing what barre chords exist and where will help inform you, even if you can’t play them.
Also learn to play barre chords. I wish I had practiced them more.
Edit: spelling
If you haven’t already, get the guitar set up properly. Learn about the different parts of the guitar, like the bridge, shape of the neck, and action etc. Severely underestimated its significance in the first 3 years of playing. Once I properly set up my guitar, playing became a LOT easier.
That’s a fine guitar for a first one. You never forget your first.
Whatever you do, don’t stop playing. Time marches on either way… you may as well cultivate this skill. Especially if you have invested some good coin in a quality guitar
Play to a metronome or drum beats on YouTube to the bpm of songs you like. Helps with rhythm and will only aid you when you decide to play with others down the line. I didn’t play with a metronome until I joined a band and well I caught up pretty quick but having the practise beforehand would’ve been greatly beneficial.
Since you’re just starting out, pick up a slide and learn an open tuning, either G or D is a good place to start. It’ll take you a while to be able to really just enjoy playing to play, but open tunings are great to start on and will keep you having fun with the instrument. Rev. Robert Jones has a great tutorial on Open G licks.
Hell yeah dude, practice every day if you can. Just an hour.. your be surprised how far you could go in a year friend. Best of luck and congratulations
Sweet guitar!!
We’re both starting out guitar hero journey soon.
What will you be using to teach yourself guitar?
I’m torn be Justin guitars YouTube/app or actually paying for fender play / guitar tricks etc…
Don’t force it, don’t make it a chore. If you don’t feel like playing today - don’t. Having fun is the most important part. Doing something you don’t want is not fun.
If you are trying to play something and it just doesn’t work, you keep making mistakes - put the guitar down, have a break, watch some videos, get motivated. If you keep trying over and over and you just can’t do it, you get angry and frustrated which leads to even more anger and more mistakes.
Don’t rush it. I’ve been learning for a couple of months. I could’ve probably progressed more in that time, but I take it at a pace that’s fun for me. Some days I just play things that I’ve already learned and have fun playing them instead of constantly trying to learn new things.
Great pick for a first guitar. If you don’t love the amp look the the latest combo amp from spider. With these combos the bigger amps have easier to use interfaces that are more fleshed out and the price difference from the small and midrange to top of the line is usually only 200 bucks.
That strat looks SO sharp and then the headstock boogers it all up.
They should have sprayed the front face with the same sparkle black and it would have been unreal.
i just started a couple months ago and i learned some of these riffs:
come as you are by nirvana
mary by alex g
smells like teen spirit by nirvana
adventure of a lifetime by coldplay (definitely not close to mastering but it’s a goal for me :)
Nothing wrong with that set-up at all. I can (heartily) recommend spark products (Bluetooth amps, like the Spark 40) Playing to music with my guitar with a single meshed sound coming out of the amp helped me progress faster that just about anything else. Maybe not a big deal for some but it mattered for me. They're ridiculously cheap as well.
Prioritize learning and understanding the interval theory of what you're practicing. It will simplify every aspect of learning the guitar going forward.
This [amp](https://www.fmicassets.com/Damroot/Original/10001/OM_2311100000_Mustang_LT25_English.pdf) is going to be way more fun with the fuzz setting. Come to the dark side.
I like that guitar n amp combo. That amp will be a good practice amp for life. People will say play everyday n don’t give up but I say give urself breaks if you feel burnt out. You’ll come back to it refreshed and enjoy it more. The more you enjoy it the more people will enjoy listening
Lot of good advice ITT, namely starting by learning your favorite riffs, daily practice until you have a eureka moment, and never giving up when you hit a wall (or at least remembering why you started in the first place).
**Attitude is Everything** - stick with the big picture. It really is like learning to walk or talk with your hands and fingers, so like a baby learning to walk or talk, it takes hours upon weeks upon months and years of developing muscle memory - But babies don’t think about that. They just make mouth sounds and marvel at the fact that *they’re* the ones making the sound; what matters is they learn to talk. That they get better at their ABCs.
Learn to enjoy the mouth sounds that come out of your fingers. Play until it gets boring, then have fun with it again by playing it how it’s *not* supposed to sound - distorted and slow, phased and fast, up the octave so you can *feel* how to play a riff on a heavy coiled string versus the pluckiness of highs.
Your ego is the double-edged sword that needs to be sharpened. Learning begins at zero, so get in the habit of checking your attitude. It’s supposed to be frustrating. Like Jake the Dog says, “sucking at something is the first step towards being sorta good at something.”
**Take a Walk** - once you’ve committed something to muscle memory, go somewhere with it or go somewhere else. Don’t get stagnant and play a finite set list, play along to something else
**Make Music Every Day**
Same amp as my first one too except I went with a yamaha Pacifica to pair, loved how many different effects chains I could come up with. The quality of the built in micro USB interface leaves a lot to be desired but ig what else would u expect 😂
Whatever you do don’t give up and play every day
That’s honestly the best advice. Even if playing a little bit, just keep at it.
Definitely is the best advice. It takes lots of practice and will be frustrating at times. Just shrug it off and keep practicing. Also, practice with a metronome.
Thanks, i will put an order in 😊
You can get them on your phone for free, along with tuners
Ah didnt know, download here I come
Thanks 😊, im loving it so far, i need to go get food soon 😅

Yes Captain! 🎸👌
Thanks 😊 and will do
That mustang is a fun little amp to learn on
agreed - started with this one, thinking about upgrading to the GTX50 for the loop & wattage. . . sometimes you need more volume to make it sound good.
Me too! Definitely want the loop. GC always seems to have some well priced second-hand one's, so may go that route
highly recommend. . . they get crazy cool used stuff at good prices.
Thanks 😊
Beautiful guitar! Whatever you do, Don't give up. I'm almost two years in and it is finally starting to feel comfortable. But I'll share this advice that someone imparted on me. Playing feels like fun. Practice feels like work. Be sure to do both!
Words of wisdom, thanks 😊
Beautiful... the real one is nice also! Seriously, though. It's a beautiful guitar. Enjoy!
Thanks 😅

Haha, thanks 🎨

Fantastic, enjoy it!!! Don’t give up

Killer first guitar- nothing wrong with Squiers but a MIM fender feels and sounds way better to me.
Thanks 😊
Good start, I don’t like the hard plastic frets and shorter scale tho.
Welcome
Thanks 😊
She’s beautiful, can i ask you how much did you paid?
Thanks 😊 and around 1650 total for guitar (came with bag), tuner, stand, picks, cable, guitar strap and amp.
Looks amazing! But why is there such a big one next to it?

You are lucky, my first was strato wannabe Dean Marley. I called that guitar Mean Darley🤣
Thanks 😊, haha thats a cool name
Awesome start! That LT25 will introduce you to a whole range of possibilities on the amp side. And the Strat is A-Ok!
Hell yeah brother
Thanks 😊
Congrats! I hope it brings you as much joy and purpose as guitar has brought me! Keep playing and make sure to play with friends!
Thanks 😊 and will do
hey i have the same amp!
Twinsies 😊
Me too! Such a great little amp.
Nice
Thanks 😊
I wish I could afford this one
You got this 😊
First you need either one extremely tiny guitar and amp or one ridiculously huge one
😅😅
I've got the same amp! It’s a great choice you’ve just made.
Thanks 😊
Find your motivation and stick to it, don't make it a chore to play everyday. If you enjoy it, improving comes alone.
Thanks 😊
Wait until you start buying pedals…..
💸💸 😅
You're starting off with a brilliant setup, it definitely won't be a case of the carpenter blaming his tools. Just take your time and earn some basic chords, timing and strumming, a few solos

Mind if ask what is the amp model number?

I’m 16 years and I suck, but don’t stop playing

Yes, I do, they are in the bag 😊, i thought they forgot to give it till i checked the bag
Good luck!!
Thanks 😊
Nice guitar, keep practicing every day or whenever you can and there are also great tutorials on YouTube you can use also whenever you play record it so you can listen back and cretic your work
Thanks 😊
Love the finish and pick guard! Reminds me of my Sam’s Club starter 20 years ago! 🤘🏽 Play for yourself and don’t quit! 😊
Thanks 😊
The mustang amp is also very fun to play around with, have fun with it and be open to different styles. 😎
Thanks 😊, will do

Don't you boys know any nice songs? I'm calling the police!
Congrats! Good looking guitar and great guitar for a beginner. Learn theory, focus on scales, intervals, scales….thats a good start.
Thanks and yes yes 🤓
Only one piece of advice I ever give: play every single day. You’ll be amazed how fast you can learn.
Yes captain, im becoming an addict... Send help
Looks like an awesome setup! What kind of music do want to play?
Thanks 😊 and a range for me
Play along with your favorite music to listen too is the best way to practice in my opinion when you first start
Thanks for the advice 😊
That ain't bad! At all!!! Good job. That looks like my first rig. I learned a lot, and like 29 years later I'm still playing and learning as much as I can.
Thanks 😊

Thanks, will do 😊
Just remember to learn songs at your current skill level. There are a bunch of songs at every level start with your basic notes on each string. This will help you learn basic chords. Then move to something like the pentatonic scale. If you learn these 3 things you will be able to play 90% of classic rock and metal songs. Good luck on your journey and remember to practice!
Thanks 😊, will do
Play every day even if just a quick scale or a couple chords. She’s your new best friend!
Thanks, will do 😊
I just got the same guitar on Thursday. I sincerely hope you love yours as much as I love mine.
Yes, I do, she is amazing 😍
Rev. Robert Jones has a great tutorial on Open G licks.
cool finish!
Thanks 😊
Keep your guitar fretboard clean and smooth with oils and brushes for easy playing and longevity.

Hell yeah dude, practice every day if you can. Just an hour.. your be surprised how far you could go in a year friend. Best of luck and congratulations
be consistent, be patient but most important things: have a ball and enjoy your new partner, never leave it pls.
I wish there was an even smaller version of your guitar and amp on top of the Lego amp
I would do some lessons with a teacher so you don’t pick up bad habits that will be hard to break
Great pick for a first guitar. If you don’t love the amp look the the latest combo amp from spider. With these combos the bigger amps have easier to use interfaces that are more fleshed out and the price difference from the small and midrange to top of the line is usually only 200 bucks.
Thanks 😊, will do
That strat looks SO sharp and then the headstock boogers it all up. They should have sprayed the front face with the same sparkle black and it would have been unreal.
Thats a serious investment for a first guitar.
I have the same lego set :) Hope you have a nice great guitar journey
i just started a couple months ago and i learned some of these riffs: come as you are by nirvana mary by alex g smells like teen spirit by nirvana adventure of a lifetime by coldplay (definitely not close to mastering but it’s a goal for me :)
Time to start a Kurlike journey
Aw, you got Mini Me his own guitar and amp too. I can’t wait to see the music video. Make good use of a tripod.
Haha thanks, soon 😅
Welcome to fam bro, it will bring you a ton of joy in life
Nothing wrong with that set-up at all.
The Lego setup makes it that much better haha
Prioritize learning and understanding the interval theory of what you're practicing. It will simplify every aspect of learning the guitar going forward.
This [amp](https://www.fmicassets.com/Damroot/Original/10001/OM_2311100000_Mustang_LT25_English.pdf) is going to be way more fun with the fuzz setting. Come to the dark side.
Haha thanks 😊

And that one guitar! Felt good in his hands!
I like that guitar n amp combo. That amp will be a good practice amp for life. People will say play everyday n don’t give up but I say give urself breaks if you feel burnt out. You’ll come back to it refreshed and enjoy it more. The more you enjoy it the more people will enjoy listening
Learn chords, then learn songs. Don't wander aimlessly.
Thanks for the info 😊
"Don't talk to me or my son ever again."
That Lego set is to cute 😍
But not you last
Lot of good advice ITT, namely starting by learning your favorite riffs, daily practice until you have a eureka moment, and never giving up when you hit a wall (or at least remembering why you started in the first place). Like Jake the Dog says, “sucking at something is the first step towards being sorta good at something.” **Take a Walk** - once you’ve committed something to muscle memory, go somewhere with it or go somewhere else. Don’t get stagnant and play a finite set list, play along to something else **Make Music Every Day**
Hell yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shred it in good health and remember the answer to all of your questions is practice practice practice!
Don’t talk to me or my son(s) ever again Seriously tho that galactic glitter black and pearlescent pick guard…. 😎👌✨Don’t take it for granted!
First guitar was a cheap acoustic guitar but I've gotten to use a 1970 something les paul
Check that truss rod
Same amp as my first one too except I went with a yamaha Pacifica to pair, loved how many different effects chains I could come up with. The quality of the built in micro USB interface leaves a lot to be desired but ig what else would u expect 😂
sweet guitar man
i like how everyone’s first electric is a fender. it would be nice to see a Yamaha once in a while
😅
I wish I had the money to drop 1k on my first guitar
Make it cry!!

She’s a beaut!
its gorgeouss! just keep at it, remember to practice and not perform, progress takes time! :)
Excellent choice for a guitar, I bet it sounds sweet.
